Jeff Gordon concluded his NASCAR driving career with a 6th place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the Ford Ecoboost 400. Gordon finished 3rd in the final points standings. Kyle Busch won the race and claimed his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship by finishing a spot ahead of Kevin Harvick.

Gordon started 5th and moved to 4th by lap 2. The first caution waved on lap 13 for pole sitter Denny Hamlin’s gear problem, which forced him to pit for repairs. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 7th place. He quickly moved into the top-5, and took 4th from Martin Truex on lap 21. One lap later he moved to 3rd with a move around Joey Logano. Kevin Harvick took a spot from Gordon on lap 25 to drop him to 4th. A competition caution slowed the field on lap 31. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 3rd place. On the restart, Gordon dove low in turn 1 to take the race lead from Kyle Busch. A caution for Kasey Kahne’s wall contact brought out the caution on lap 42. On the restart, Harvick used the outside line to his advantage to take the lead from Gordon. Busch took the runner-up spot from Gordon on lap 47. A caution for a wreck involving Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Aric Almirola, and Casey Mears slowed the field on lap 48. On the restart, Gordon struggled on the inside line and dropped to 8th on lap 55. He battled handling and slipped to 12th on lap 65, before taking 11th from Jamie McMurray on lap 70. Denny Hamlin, who regrouped from earlier issues, took a spot from Gordon on lap 85. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 92. A spring rubber was pulled from the left rear to improve the handling. He cycled through in 13th place on lap 95. He gained one spot over the next 25 laps and ran 12th on lap 120. Gordon took 11th from Ryan Newman on lap 126.

Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 140 and cycled through in 12th. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 148. The lead laps cars pitted with Gordon restarting in 12th place. He used the outside line to his advantage and moved up to 9th on lap 156. However, he dropped a spot to Jimmie Johnson on lap 159. The next caution came on lap 167 for Josh Wise’s wall contact. The leaders came to pit road with Gordon restarting 11th. He re-entered the top-10 with a pass on Ryan Blaney on lap 175. Gordon took 9th from Martin Truex on lap 186. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 217 and inserted a spring rubber in the right rear. He cycled through in 11th place on lap 219. Gordon moved to 10th but ran distantly behind the leaders. A debris caution with 10 laps to go brought pit stops. Gordon restarted in 10th place with 7 laps to go. He got a great restart on the outside line and moved to 6th place with 6 to go where he finished the race.

JG’s comments
“Who would have ever thought coming from Indiana as a sprint car driver that I could come south to North Carolina and race for people like Bill Davis and then get the opportunity to work with the greatest owner in the Cup Series that there’s ever been, and that’s Rick Hendrick. He’s way more than a car owner to me. I’m so appreciative, it’s been the most amazing experience. I’m a little disappointed, I’ll be honest. I thought going into this race that we had something for them. When the sun went down, we missed a little something. We didn’t quite have it when the track cooled down. We had to work on it. But I loved the effort and we showed what we’re made of there at the end by climbing our way back to 6th. I’m proud of that. It’s a happy day. I wanted that win, but we’re still going to celebrate.”

Jimmie Johnson claimed his 6th NASCAR championship in the last 8 years with an 8th place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon posted his best points finish since 2009 by finishing 9th. That earns Gordon a stage invitation at the NASCAR banquet for the 19th time in the last 20 years. Gordon concluded his season with an 11th place effort at Homestead. At the front of the field, Denny Hamlin capped an arduous and injury-plagued season with a victory in the season-finale.

Gordon started 26th and moved into the top-20 within 7 laps. He ran 19th when the first caution waved on lap 10 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 24th place. He re-entered the top-20 on lap 19 and advanced to 16th on lap 23. The next caution came on lap 24 for Travis Kvapil’s spin. Gordon pitted and restarted in 20th place. He quickly moved up to 17th within a lap of the restart. Gordon entered the top-10 with a move around Ryan Newman on lap 34. Eight laps later he entered the top-5. At the 50-lap mark, Gordon took 4th from Brad Keselowski. The third caution came at lap 68 for debris. Gordon held 4th place through the cycle of pit stops. He dropped to 6th shortly after the restart and was in 7th when the next caution waved on lap 90 for Dave Blaney’s spin. Gordon restarted in 8th place on lap 94. He fell to 9th by lap 100, but rebounded as the run progressed to take 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 105. Fifteen laps later he re-entered the top-5. However, Earnhardt Jr went by on lap 123 to send Gordon back to 6th place. Just after the halfway point, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop.

A debris caution on lap 152 brought pit stops with Gordon holding the 6th spot. As the sun began setting, Gordon moved closer to the front by taking 3rd place from Brad Keselowski on lap 170. The next caution came on lap 193 for debris. Gordon came to pit road and restarted in 2nd place. However, he spun the tires on the restart and dropped to 8th place. He eventually regrouped and moved up to 6th with 64 laps to go. A caution on lap 206 for Paul Menard’s cut tire slowed the field. Gordon exited pit road in 8th place after opting for four tires. He made his way back into the top-5 with a move around Kevin Harvick with 50 laps to go. Paul Menard’s inferno on pit road brought out a caution with 36 to go. Gordon held 5th place through the final round of pit stops. He struggled on the inside line and fell to 9th within a lap of the restart. With 20 to go, he dropped to 10th as Jimmie Johnson went by. Gordon finished the season with a 11th place finish.

Turning point
Gordon restarted in 5th place on the final restart with 21 laps to go, but struggled on the inside line and dropped back in the field.

Jeff Gordon scored his 87th career win as he played fuel mileage strategy to perfection at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The win allowed Gordon to finish in the top-10 for the 18th time in 20 NASCAR Cup series seasons.

Gordon started 11th and fell to 13th by lap 3. He moved back up to run 11th by lap 20 while battling a tight handling condition. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 25 with a pass on Mark Martin. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 47 and cycled through in 9th place. He soon lost a spot to Brad Keselowski on lap 51. However, he made steady progress as the run continued and ran 8th on lap 70. The first caution waved on lap 78 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 7th place. He took 6th from Carl Edwards and entered the top-5 with a pass on Jimmie Johnson by the 100-lap mark. Gordon passed Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth in the next 10 laps to run 3rd on lap 110. Green flag pit stops came on lap 131. A caution for debris slowed the field 10 laps later. Gordon opted for 4 tires on the pit stop and restarted in 11th place.

Ricky Stenouse’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 156. Gordon took fuel only on the pit stop and restarted 10th. On fresher tires than most drivers ahead of him, Gordon moved to 5th place with 85 to go. Gordon stayed on the track during a green flag pit stop sequence and led a lap before coming to pit road. He returned to the race in 8th position and quickly moved to 6th. With 40 laps to go. Gordon moved to 4th as Brad Keselowski clinched the 2012 Sprint Cup championship after Jimmie Johnson dropped out of the race.

Gordon took 3rd from Carl Edwards with 36 to go. Since he didn’t need to make another stop, Gordon took the lead after Kyle Busch and Martin Truex pitted. He led Clint Bowyer by more than 2 seconds in the closing laps and scored his second victory of 2012. Gordon has visited Victory Lane at every track he’s ever competed on in the NASCAR Cup series — except Kentucky.

Turning point
Gordon stretched his fuel to the final pit stop and didn’t need to come in when race leaders Kyle Busch and Martin Truex came to pit road with under 15 laps to go.

Tony Stewart claimed his third NASCAR championship by winning at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Stewart’s victory thrust him into a points tie with Carl Edwards, who finished second. However, Stewart won the championship due to the first tiebreaker — victories. It was the sixth consecutive season that Hendrick Motorsports’ chassis and engines won the series title. Stewart won 3 out of the last 4 races in the season to claim the championship.

Gordon started 7th and moved to 4th by the conclusion on lap 8. Rain on lap 12 brought out the first caution flag. Gordon came to pit road and exited in 13th place after taking four tires. He re-entered the top-10 on lap 23 and moved up to 5th by lap 30. He passed Ryan Newman for 4th place before a caution on lap 34 for Dave Blaney’s spin. After racing resumed, he took 3rd from Kevin Harvick on lap 46 and moved into the runner-up spot on lap 50. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 80. The field cycled through before David Ragan’s blown engine on lap 83. A caution for rain on lap 108 brought the leaders to pit road for a red flag period.

The race resumed after nearly a 90-minute delay at 6pm. Gordon came to pit road for tires and exited in second place behind Kevin Harvick, who opted for two tires. Gordon took the lead after the restart, but lost the top spot to Tony Stewart after pacing the field for 6 laps. Edwards took the 2nd spot from Gordon on lap 130. A caution for Trevor Bayne’s wall contact brought the field to pit road. Gordon restarted in 5th place on lap 140. However, he slipped to 10th before a caution for Jimmie Johnson’s spin on lap 145. Gordon steadily moved back up to 7th on lap 153. A caution for a multi-car wreck involving Landon Cassill, Trevor Bayne, and Cole Whitt slowed the field on lap 155. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 5th place. He fell to 9th on the restart, but regrouped to take 8th from Newman with 100 laps to go. With 85 to go, Gordon moved into 6th place as championship contenders Edwards and Stewart battled at the front of the field.

Gordon came in for a green flag pit stops with 68 laps to go and cycled through in 6th place. A caution flag for rain with 55 laps to go slowed the field. After a lengthy caution period, Gordon ran 10th with 35 to go while Stewart and Edwards battled 1-2 at the front for the Sprint Cup title. With 20 to go, Gordon moved up to 7th place as Stewart led Edwards by more than a second for the Cup series championship. With 10 to go, Gordon advanced to 5th place.

For the first time, Gordon scored more victories in a season than Johnson. In addition, he led more than 920 laps in a season for the first time since 2007.

Road Ahead: After some down time over the Thanksgiving holiday, Jeff Gordon will head to Las Vegas for the NASCAR banquet on December 2. Following that, he’ll visit Rwanda with his family to view the health situation as the pediatric cancer care center is built.

November 21 – – Jeff Gordon closed out his 2nd winless season in the last 3 years with a 37th place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway following a blown engine. In the championship battle, Jimmie Johnson finished 2nd and clinched his 5th consecutive title after Denny Hamlin struggled with handling issues following an early race spin.

Gordon started 11th and moved into the top-10 within 5 laps. He ran 7th when the caution waved on lap 16 for tire debris. Gordon lost two spots on pit road and restarted in 9th place. He lost two more spots on the lap 24 before Denny Hamlin spun on the backstretch after contact with Greg Biffle. Gordon fell back to 14th by lap 40 battling handling issues. He dropped two more spots over the next 20 laps and ran 16th on lap 60. On lap 90, he pulled to the inside of the track and lost positions after an engine issue surfaced.

Gordon lost two laps and ran 36th. He moved up to 34th with 100 laps to go but was distantly off the pace. With 67 laps to go, Gordon’s engine blew on the frontstretch. He pulled into the garage area with his 4th DNF of the season — and 2nd DNF in the last 3 races.

November 23- – Jimmie Johnson captured an unprecedented fourth consecutive NASCAR Cup series title with a 5th place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway.  Hendrick Motorsports took the top three spots in the points standings as Mark Martin finished 2nd in points, followed by Jeff Gordon.

Gordon started 20th at Homestead and gained five spots in the opening five laps of the race.  He entered the top-10 on lap 15 due to Marcos Abrose’s unscheduled pit stop.  Gordon ran as high as 9th before Dale Earnhardt Jr. passed to send him back to 10th on lap 39.  Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 54. After pit stops, Gordon ran in the 8th position.

The adjustments made by crew chief Steve Letarte helped Gordon through the corners and he moved up to 6th on lap 60.  The first caution waved on lap 81 for Marcos Ambrose’s spin.  Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 7th place.  However, on the restart he slipped back while complaining of a possible tire issue.   He fell to 17th by lap 90, but regrouped to 15th ten laps later. A caution for John Andretti’s cut tire on lap 102 brought out the caution flag.  Gordon ran in 15th over the next 15 laps before a caution for Juan Pablo Montoya’s cut tire on lap 120 following an ego clash with Tony Stewart.  Gordon stayed on the track during the caution flag and moved up to 7th for the restart.

On lap 156, Montoya exacted a dose of revenge by spinning Stewart coming off turn four.  After the caution flag, Gordon made it 3-wide coming down the frontstretch and took the 5th position from Kevin Harvick on lap 165.  Ten laps later, Harvick and Jimmie Johnson passed to put Gordon back to 7th spot.  Gordon complained of a lack of grip and slipped back to 9th on lap 180.  Robby Gordon’s spin on lap 194 brought out the caution and the lead lap cars came to pit road.  Gordon’s pit crew sent him out in 6th place.

In the closing stages he ran within striking distance of Kurt Busch in the battle for third in the Cup series points standings.  Johnson took a position with 18 laps to go as Gordon ran in 7th place.  He moved up to 6th at the checkered flag and finished the season 3rd in the points standings.

Post Race Comments

A DIFFICULT NIGHT, BUT A GOOD ONE JUST THE SAME FOR HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS
“No, it was. Our thoughts certainly are going out to Rick (Hendrick) and his family right now.  I know how much he’d like to be here.  I know how much family means to him.  So we just want to let him know, congratulations, and that we’re certainly thinking of him.  I know how proud he is to be one-two-three.  I know how much it meant to him.  He kept sending me texts and calling me and everything all week long going, ‘We really need that one-two-three!’ (laughs).   So he put a little pressure on me and this team that I don’t think we were really thinking about other than just trying to come here and win. And so that did put a little extra pressure on us.  And then what can you say about Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus and all the guys at the Lowe’s Chevrolet team.  I never thought I’d see anybody win four in a row.  And who’s to say they won’t go win five in a row next season?   We’re really proud of them.  I know as a member of Hendrick Motorsports it’s an honor to see our organization excel like that.   And it takes all the people; everybody out there to make it happen.  And I’ve got to say thanks to the fans.  It’s been a great year.  We really appreciate everything that the fans have done for the sport this year.”

HOW SPECIAL IS THE FEAT THE NO. 48 TEAM PULLED OFF?
“Man, you know, they’re just good.  As a group, as a total group, they’re just good.   And that’s what you see when you see championship caliber teams. You see them come together as one and all working in the same direction with a lot of confidence in each other.  And you can say oh, well, things went their way.  Well things go your way when you’ve got a good race car and when you have good pit stops and when the driver and the crew chief are communicating and doing their jobs well.  It just trickles on down.  And those guys have done it better than anybody else.  I think more than four years, to be honest with you, because I think they’ve been the best team probably the last six years.  It just took them a couple of years to figure out how to win that championship.  Once they figured that out, whew, man, watch out.  And as a competitor it’s a little bit frustrating as well as inspiring for us to try to figure out how we could go out there and win a championship for ourselves.  But right now we’re just going to enjoy this moment being one-two-three and those guys winning four in a row and go into the off-season with something to smile about and a lot of work left ahead of us.”

ON JIMMIE JOHNSON WINNING FOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS IN A ROW
“I never ever thought I’d see it done, to be honest with you.  I think it’s absolutely incredible and I think it’s something that I don’t know if I’ll see in my lifetime ever happening again.   But they’ve shown that it’s possible and they’ve also shown just how good they are and that’s why they’re where they’re at. It’s quite a feat.”

YOU AND RICK HENDRICK ARE NOW CAR OWNERS WITH FOUR IN A ROW, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?
“Yeah, I just don’t look at it that way because I’m still so focused on driving . And I’m still biased to the No. 24 team as a driver.  But I’m very fortunate that Rick (Hendrick) has made me a part of the organization the way he has and I’m thankful for that.  And I’m happy to share in that success.”

AS A CAR OWNER, HOW CONCERNED WERE YOU THAT JIMMIE JOHNSON MIGHT BE TAKEN OUT WHEN JUAN PABLO MONTOYA AND TONY STEWART WERE MESSING IT UP?
“I had no idea what was going on around those guys or how close it was.  I was so focused on our own race.”

YOU’VE MESSED IT UP WITH JUAN YOURSELF A LITTLE BIT. WAS HE JUST AGGRESSIVE?
“Juan is aggressive.   He’s a great driver and I think that sometimes he tries to show a little bit too much to people that he’s not going to get pushed around or taken advantage of.   In this series, sometimes you’ve got to know when to back off and when to push somebody’s buttons and when not to; and who.  I think he found out tonight.”

TONY STEWART IS OBVIOUSLY THE SAME WAY
“That’s my point.  You’ve got to recognize who you can get into those battles with.   And sometimes some guys are going to surprise you and other times it’s just guys you don’t do that with.  If you want to get the best finish you can possibly get, not getting into it with somebody is the way to do it.  Sometimes you might look a little nonaggressive by doing it that way, but in the long run, that’s what gets you to the end of the race and get’s you maximum points by the end of the day.  I think Mark Martin is a perfect example of it.  You don’t see him pushing and shoving and causing controversy and he’s one of the best drivers out there.  And I think that Mark is the kind of guy when somebody runs him down and is better than him, he lets them go.   But when his car is good, he expects the same from you.”

YOUR CAR WAS GOOD EARLY ON AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED?
“When the sun went down we just really struggled.   We were really loose.  And we tried to fix it but all we did was make the middle tight.  We finished sixth.  We finished third in the points.  We did what we had to so, but it wasn’t real pretty.”

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THIRD IN THE POINTS OR ARE YOU HAPPY THAT HENDRICK WAS ONE-TWO-THREE?
“I’m happy that we’re one-two-three, but I want to be No. 1.  My team wants to be number one.   We’ve got to try to figure out how to get that.”
