Rewind: Finally — Jeff Gordon tied Cale Yarborough on NASCAR’s all-time wins list with his 83rd victory in the Subway 500k at Phoenix Raceway. Gordon dominated the event leading 138 of the 312 laps. Gordon started 20th and worked his way into the top-5 by lap 50. However, on lap 59 he was in the wrong place at the wrong time when Carl Edwards got into the grass on the backstretch and slid up the track. Gordon made contact with Edwards’ car and pancaked the retaining wall with the right side of the Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet. Gordon came to pit road to repair the damage and restarted in 34th place. Restarting in the rear proved advantageous when Brian Vickers wrecked and started a chain reaction crash on the backstretch. Gordon was able to stop on the track and avoided getting caught up in the 12-car melee. He stayed out under the caution and took the lead from Ryan Newman on lap 77. Gordon went back to the top spot on lap 124 before a caution for David Ragan’s wall contact. In the closing stages, Gordon flexed his muscle by passing Tony Stewart for 2nd with 20 laps to go, and Kyle Busch for the victory with 8 to go. It was Gordon’s second win at Phoenix and moved him within one victory of Darrell Waltrip’s career total.

Road ahead: The 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway is next on the schedule. Gordon dominated the race in 2010 only to see his victory hopes come unhinged in the final 25 laps following a two-tire pit stop. It’s early in the season, but it’s clear that Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson have jelled very quickly.

Jeff Gordon finished 11th in the Kobalt Tools 500 on a day when he struggled with handling and traffic issues for the balance of the day. Gordon ran betwen 14th-16th for most of the day and salvaged 11th due to fuel mileage. Denny Hamlin dominated the race but needed a late race for fuel, thus handing the victory to Carl Edwards. Hamlin will take a 15 point lead over Jimmie Johnson to Homestead in the hopes of capturing his first NASCAR championship.

Gordon started 22nd and fell back on the outside line. He ran 26th when the first caution waved on lap 2 for Brendan Gaughan’s contact with the wall. He entered the top-20 with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 30. His lap times improved later in the run as he moved to 18th by lap 45. A caution for Brad Keselowski’s wall contact on lap 60 brought the field to pit road for the frist time. Gordon’s “new” pit crew made their first stop ever for the driver after coming over from the 48 team earlier in the week. Gordon gained a spot on pit road and restarted 16th on lap 65. Gordon gained positions in the first 10 laps of the green flag and ran 12th on lap 75. He took 11th from Matt Kenseth on lap 95 before a debris caution caused by Jamie McMurray throwing a water bottle on the track on lap 101. Gordon lost 5 spots on pit road and restarted 16th.

He made his way to 13th before tight handling caused him to fall back. He dropped to 16th on lap 126 when Mark Martin passed. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 171. A slow stop was hindered by the right front, and Gordon ran 16th after stops cycled through the field. He moved up two spots to 14th by lap 200 as the handling seemed to improve on the longer run. Robby Gordon’s spin with 90 laps to go brought out the caution and a round of pit stops. Gordon restarted in 14th place on lap 230, but lost two spots within a lap of the restart. Travis Kvapil’s spin on lap 233 brought out the fifth caution of the race. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in the 15th position. He fell to 17th after Kevin Harvick shoved him up the track in turn 4. He ran 15th for the balance of the last 60 laps before late race pit stops for fuel began. Gordon had enough fuel to make it to the end and posted an 11th place finish — the high water mark of his day in the desert.

April 11 – – For the second consecutive race, Jeff Gordon had victory within his sights while lining up with the lead on a final green/white/checkered flag restart.  Unfortunately for Gordon, the ending at Phoenix International Raceway mirrored the disappointment of Martinsville Speedway.  However, this time around, there was no contact from behind. Rather, it was the driver’s error that opened the door for Ryan Newman to take the lead (and the victory) away with 2 laps to go.  Nevertheless, Gordon posted a runner-up finish and moved to 5th in the series points standings.

Gordon started 10th and moved around Carl Edwards on the opening lap to take a spot.  On lap 2, he passed Martin Truex and Marcos Ambrose to take 7th place.  Ten laps later he took over 6th from Dale Earnhardt Jr.  The first caution waved on lap 15 after Kurt Busch got loose entering turn one and took out Kasey Kahne on the outside.  Pit stops ensued with Gordon losing a spot and exiting in 7th place.   A lap after the restart, Jamie McMurray spun in turn three off the front bumper of Clint Bowyer.  Gordon restarted in 8th on lap 30 on the outside of Matt Kenseth.  He moved to 6th on lap 31 before AJ Allmendinger took a position.  On lap 39, Jimmie Johnson went by sending Gordon back to 8th before he regrouped and took 7th from Ryan Newman.  The third caution came on lap 56 after Brian Vickers wrecked in turn three. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 6th place.

When racing resumed, Gordon bided his time in 7th place behind Sam Hornish and AJ Allmendinger.  On lap 82, Gordon moved to the outside of Allmendinger and raced side by side with Dr. Lynne’s husband for a lap before taking 6th place.  Kenseth passed Gordon on lap 88 to take over 6th and send Gordon back to the 7th position.  He moved back into 6th on lap 110 after getting around Hornish.  On lap 133, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop just before Kurt Busch cut a tire.   The caution waved three laps later as the pit sequence fully cycled through.  Gordon fell to 8th due to the tight conditions on pit road and coming in slightly sideways to his stall.  He gained two spots on the restart and closed in on Kenseth for 5th on lap 155.  However, Gordon’s car tightened up and Kyle Busch took a spot on lap 161.  He moved into the top-5 on lap 188 after getting around Joey Logano.  A caution for Dave Blaney’s blown engine brought the lead lap cars to pit road.  Gordon lost six spots and restarted in 11th.  He dropped to 12th before rallying back into the top-10 with 165 laps to go.

With 107 to go, Gordon took 8th from Logano, and then passed Kenseth for 7th with 94 to go.  As the green flag run continued, he tracked down and passed Kevin Harvick for 6th.   A caution flag brought the leaders to pit road with 59 laps to go.  Gordon gained two positions and departed in 4th place.  On the restart, Gordon used the outside line to move up to 3rd but ran distantly behind Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson for the race lead.  As the laps wound down, he made some headway on catching Johnson for 2nd.  With four laps to go, Scott Riggs hit the wall to bring out the caution and set up a green/white/checkered finish.  The leaders came to pit road with Gordon opting for a two-tire change and departed pit road with the race lead.  On the restart, Newman powered on the inside past Gordon for the race lead after the leader spun the tires.

November 16 – – Jeff Gordon’s championship hopes will be put on the shelf for another season once the green flag waves on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.  Gordon struggled with handling during the Checker 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and finished a distant 9th.   At the front of the field, Jimmie Johnson led the most laps en route to his 7th victory of the season to all but clinch his fourth consecutive Cup series championship.  Gordon expressed frustration with the setup on his car throughout the Phoenix race as he posted his 24th top-10 finish of the season.   He’ll conclude a consistent — albeit unsatisfying — season next weekend in South Florida.

April 19 – – Jeff Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the Subway 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. However, what looked like a solid top-10 finish became a 25th place effort due to a late mistake by the pit crew. At the front of the field, Mark Martin scored the third consecutive victory for Hendrick Motorsports. It was Martin’s 36th career win and first as a member of HMS. Gordon still holds the points lead heading to next Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

April 18 — Hendrick Motorsports drivers have won four straight races at Phoenix International Raceway, with #48-Jimmie Johnson visiting Victory Lane during the last three events. #24-Jeff Gordon won the April 21, 2007, contest after starting from the pole position.  During the last eight races at the track, Hendrick Motorsports drivers have claimed five victories and five pole positions.  Last November, Jimmie Johnson made track history by becoming the first driver to win three consecutive races at Phoenix International Raceway.  On Saturday, the three-time and defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion will attempt to extend that history with a fourth consecutive Phoenix victory – this time in the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500.  Gordon, who ended a 47-race winless streak on April 5 with his first victory at Texas Motor Speedway, now has 82 in his career.  He stands one behind fifth-place Cale Yarborough on the all-time victories list and only two away from tying Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip for third.  Jeff will start 4th in tonight’s race.

Other Hendrick Drivers Starting Positions:

Mark Martin – 1st
Jimmie Johnson – 10th
Dale Jr. – 15th

Gordon Has Sights Set on Fifth Place at PIR

April 16, 2009 by admin 1000Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F04%2F16%2Fgordon-has-sights-set-on-fifth-place-at-pir%2FGordon+Has+Sights+Set+on+Fifth+Place+at+PIR2009-04-16+17%3A05%3A33adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1000

AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 14, 2009) – Fifth place is Jeff Gordon’s goal at Phoenix International Raceway – in career NASCAR Sprint Cup wins.

While Team DuPont’s win at Texas was their first in more than a year, they may not have to wait long for their next celebration if history is any indication. In 2002, Gordon ended a 31-race winless streak with a victory at Bristol. One race later, the team was celebrating again after a victory in Darlington.

During the 2003 campaign, Gordon snapped a 22-race winless streak at Martinsville. He won the next race at Atlanta. And in 2007, Gordon entered this event without a victory in 25 races. He collected win No. 76 that night, tying Dale Earnhardt for sixth in all-time victories. You guessed it – he won the following event at Talladega. Overall, the driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet has won consecutive events 22 times.

“It was nice to get that win at Texas,” said Gordon, who is leading the standings by 162 over teammate Jimmie Johnson. “The victory there had eluded us for so long.

“But it’s also good to get that first win of the season out of the way. Every season, you’re looking to get that first win. When you get that one off your back, you can breathe and relax.

“Every win confirms you have what it takes, and it gives you confidence.” Confidence heading to a track where the No. 24 team has performed well in the past. Along with his 2007 victory at the Arizona track, Gordon has three poles, eight top- fives and 15 top-10’s in 20 starts. Another win would be another milestone in his 17-year career.

“I’ve accomplished more than I ever thought I would in this sport,” said Gordon. “To be in the same neighborhood as some of the all-time greats of NASCAR just blows me away.

“I’m sure they had the same feeling when winning a race. Once you’ve accomplished that, you want to win again.”

And again. And again.
