Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Brad Keselowski with 14 laps to go and held off Kyle Busch after a late race restart to score the victory in the Tums 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson’s victory — coupled with Keselowski’s 6th place finish — moved Johnson into the points lead. Jeff Gordon led 91 laps in the race and finished in 7th place.

Gordon started 11th and moved up to 8th by the end of lap 6. He took 7th fron Tony Stewart on lap 11 and entered the top-5 on lap 17. He passed Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch to take 3rd place on lap 25. Gordon moved into the runner-up spot with a pass on Brian Vickers on lap 33. The first caution waved on lap 46 for David Stremme’s cut tire. Gordon held the 2nd spot thru a round of pit stops, but dropped to 3rd when Kyle Busch went by after the restart. Gordon re-assumed the 2nd position after passing Busch on lap 62. Gordon took the race lead from Jimmie Johnson on lap 68. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire slowed the field on lap 98. Gordon dropped to 3rd following a round of pit stops. He moved to 2nd on lap 106 and moved back into the race lead on lap 107. The next caution waved for Travil Kvapil’s spin on lap 127. Gordon stayed on the track and lost the lead to Brian Vickers on lap 147. Denny Hamlin sent Gordon back to 3rd on lap 148. A caution for Kyle Busch’s spin slowed the field on lap 150. Gordon came in for a four-tire change and restarted in 18th place.

Gordon moved through race traffic into the top-10 by lap 174. His forward march continued as he took 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 180, and moved around Kurt Busch for 6th on lap 185. He ran 4th when the caution waved on lap 199 for Marcos Ambrose’s spin. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 2nd place. He took the lead from Johnson on the restart. After leading lap 215, Gordon passed Darrell Waltrip for the 6th most laps led in NASCAR history. However, Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 226 and sent Gordon back to 3rd place. He regrouped and took 2nd from Johnson just before the halfway mark. Kasey Kahne took 2nd from Gordon on lap 318 and Hamlin sent him to 4th on lap 324. Brian Vickers passed on lap 326 to push Gordon back to 5th, and Johnson sent him to 6th on lap 331. He fell to 7th when Kyle Busch went by. Gordon came to pit road on lap 337 for a green flag pit stop. Gordon ran 4th following the pit stop cycle. He moved to 3rd on lap 373 when Hamlin slowed on the track.

Johnson and Busch sent Gordon back to 5th on lap 391 prior to a caution for Hamlin whose car (and Chase hopes) died on the track. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 5th. He moved around Kahne to take 4th with 100 laps to go. He took 3rd from Busch with 83 to go and set his sights on Johnson and Bowyer at the front of the field. Gordon took 2nd from Bowyer with 70 to go. A caution for Juan Pablo Montoya’s spin after contact with Johnson slowed the field with 62 to go. Gordon ran 2nd to Johnson before a caution for Kevin Harvick’s engine with 25 laps to go. Brad Keselowski and Earnhardt Jr stayed on the track during the caution. Johnson and Gordon restarted 3rd and 4th with 19 to go. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 6th on the outside line before regrouping to take 5th from Earnhardt Jr with 16 to go. He took 4th from Keselowski with 12 to go. Two laps later, the caution waved for Earnhardt Jr’s spin in turn 2 after contact from Carl Edwards. On the restart, Gordon faded on the outside line. He dropped to 5th with 5 to go in a door-banging duel with Bowyer and lost 6th place on the final lap to Keselowski. The 7th place finish was Gordon’s 8th top-10 in the last 10 races. However, he trails points leader Johnson by 54 points with just 3 races to go.

Turning point
Gordon seemed to be tracking down Johnson for the race lead in the closing stages when a caution with 25 laps to go bunched the field. Gordon was unable to get close to the lead after that.

JG’s comments
“It was strong, especially the first half — that meant a lot to me and this team. This team made an amazing effort. The pit stops were great and the car was dominant. I think we wore the left rear tire out or something on the long run. But the last thing we wanted was to be on the outside of those last two restarts. We were and it cost us.”

Matt Kenseth might be leaving Roush Racing at the end of the 2012 season, but he’s creating quite a final act with his second victory in the Chase. Kenseth scored the win at Kansas Speedway in an event that featured 14 caution flags because of the repaved track surface. Jeff Gordon struggled with handling on the final run of the day and finished 10th. He trails points leader Brad Keselowski by 51 points with just 4 races to go.

Gordon started 19th and moved up to 15th by the end of lap 5. He was running 14th when the first caution waved on lap 31 for Casey Mears’ wall contact. Gordon pitted for tires and restarted in 20th place. He moved to 17th but was unable to make significant headway before the next caution on lap 70 for AJ Allemdinger’s cut tire. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted in 7th place. He moved to 6th before a caution for Jeff Burton’s wall contact on lap 83. Gordon slipped to 9th after the restart, but eventually worked his way around Regan Smith to take 8th place on lap 110. Aric Almirola’s cut tire on lap 123 slowed the field. Gordon came in for tires and restarted in 4th place. Jimmie Johnson crashed on lap 136 to bring out the caution. Johnson got loose exiting turn 4 and backed the Lowes Chevrolet into the wall. Repairs were made on pit road which allowed Johnson to stay on the lead lap.

On the restart, Gordon moved to the runner-up position behind race leader Matt Kenseth. One lap later, Bobby Labonte’s wall contact slowed the field. Gordon dropped to 3rd on the restart before Danica Patrick’s crash brought out the caution on lap 156. He came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted 7th because of some drivers opting not to pit. Gordon dropped to 9th before a caution on lap 165 for Tony Stewart’s spin. A caution for Greg Biffle’s crash with 92 to go slowed the field with Gordon in 10th place. With 85 to go, Ryan Newman hit Kyle Busch and created a wreck in turn 4. With 54 laps to go, Almirola’s crash brought out the caution and the final round of pit stops ensued. Gordon restarted in 9th place after opting for 4 tires. He moved to 8th before a caution for Sam Hornish’s cut tire with 33 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 9th with 14 to go when Brad Keselowski went by. Two laps later Johnson went by Gordon to drop him to 10th place where he finished the event. It was Gordon’s 7th top-10 in the last 9 races.

Turning point
A four-tire change during the final round of pit stops didn’t work out to Gordon’s advantage. He battled handling issues in the late stages of the event and dropped to 10th place.

JG’s comments
“It wasn’t that bad. It was hard to pass you just couldn’t reach the edge of the grip level really easy. My car stuck pretty good so I had pretty decent grip on the restarts and we were able to make up some spots. We did pretty good strategy so all in all it was a decent day for us. I thought we could pull off a top five at one point, but we just didn’t.”

Charlotte In-Car Audio

October 14, 2012 by admin 5323Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2012%2F10%2F14%2Fjeff-gordon-charlotte-bank-of-america-in-car-audio-nascar%2FCharlotte+In-Car+Audio2012-10-14+22%3A49%3A29adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5323

Clint Bowyer held off Denny Hamlin in a fuel mileage battle to win the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Points leader Brad Keselowski dominated the event, but needed a late stop for gas and finished 11th. Jeff Gordon struggled with handling for the balance of the night. He added to his own problems by receiving a costly pit road speeding penalty and finished 18th. Gordon is now tied for 8th in the points standings, 50 points behind Keselowski with 5 races to go.

Gordon started 11th and moved into the top-10 within 2 laps. By lap 10 he had advanced to 8th place. The first caution waved on lap 11 for Matt Kenseth’s cut tire and spin in turn four. Another caution just after the restart on lap 16 collected Jeff Burton and David Ragan. Gordon dropped to 10th on the restart on lap 23. He was in 11th when the third caution waved on lap 36 for Paul Menard’s wall contact. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 18th place. He moved back into the top-15 on lap 52 and ran 12th before a cycle of green flag pit stops. Gordon stayed on the track to lead a lap before coming to pit road on lap 86. He fell to 14th after pit stops. Gordon ran 13th at the 100-lap mark of the event.

Gordon ran 15th before a green flag pit stop at lap 214. Gordon received a very costly pit road speeding penalty and lost a lap. He put himself into position to get back on the lead lap — as the first car one lap down. However, the race went into a long green flag run. With 30 laps to go, he ran in 16th place, one lap down. He made his final pit stop under green with 18 to go. Following the stop, Gordon ran in 20th place with 10 laps to go — hopelessly trapped off the lead lap. He finished the event 18th. It was his fourth finish of 18th or worse in his last 5 races at Charlotte.

Turning point
A pit road speeding penalty took Gordon off the lead lap and effectively put a major wall between him and a possible fifth championship in 2012.

Talladega In-Car Audio

October 7, 2012 by admin 5301Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2012%2F10%2F07%2Fjeff-gordon-talladega-in-car-audio-nascar-good-sam-roadside-assistance-500%2FTalladega+In-Car+Audio2012-10-07+22%3A58%3A45adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5301

Jeff Gordon’s runner-up effort at Talladega Superspeedway came after a wild final lap that saw a multiple-car wreck in turn four that eliminated nearly 15 cars. It was Gordon’s 6th top-5 finish in the last 7 races.

Gordon started 6th and moved into the top-5 by the end of the first lap. He stayed in the draft on the low line behind Kasey Kahne and moved up to 3rd place by lap 4. He dropped to 7th before the first caution on lap 18 for a crash involving Carl Edwards and Cole Whitt. Gordon came in for a fuel-only stop and restarted in 10th place. He moved to the outside line on lap 35 and ran behind Casey Mears. Gordon briefly pushed Mears into the lead on lap 50 before the outside line went by. Gordon again pushed Mears into the lead on lap 57 before a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 61.

Gordon moved to the outside line and drafted with Matt Kenseth who pushed the #24 car into the lead on lap 73. He led for 5 laps before Jamie McMurray drafted by. Kasey Kahne picked up Gordon on the outside line and briefly pushed him into the lead on lap 83 before the field went by and dropped the pair outside the top-10. The second caution waved on lap 99 when Kurt Busch ran out of gas and was wrecked on the backstretch. Gordon came in for 4 tires and restarted in 4th place. However, he fell back on the restart without a drafting partner on the outside line. Gordon settled into the lower half of the top-20 with 60 laps to go. He moved to the middle line and moved into the top-10 with 55 to go. A debris caution slowed the field 5 laps later with Gordon in 11th place. He came in to top off the fuel tank under caution with 46 to go. After nearly wrecking behind Kenseth, Gordon dropped to the lower part of the top-20 with 35 to go.

With 20 to go, Gordon ran in 18th place and was biding his time looking for a drafting partner. With 15 to go, Gordon pushed Jamie McMurray into the top-5 on the outside line. Five laps later, Gordon pushed McMurray into the lead. With a drafting push from Dale Earnhardt Jr, Gordon pulled even with McMurray, but was unable to take the lead. Gordon then wound up on the outside line and drifted back to 8th place with Earnhardt Jr in tow. With 8 to go, Gordon and Earnhardt Jr had slipped to 11th and 12th. The Hendrick teammates drafted back into the top-5 with 6 laps to go on the outside line. Jamie McMurray’s spin with 5 laps to go brought out the caution flag. Gordon came to pit road for a splash of fuel to make it to the finish. He restarted in 11th place — directly behind Kasey Kahne — with 2 laps to go. On the final lap, Tony Stewart cut down on Michael Waltrip setting off a multiple-car melee in turn 4. Gordon drilled the rear of Kahne’s car, sending him up the track. Kyle Busch hit Gordon and the #24 car went to the apron. Gordon kept the car straight and was just one of three cars to cross the finish line within 5 seconds of race winner Matt Kenseth. Gordon’s 2nd place effort was his 6th top-5 finish in the last 7 races. He moved up to 6th in the series standings, 42 behind Brad Keselowski.

Turning point
Gordon stayed on the low line and was able to avoid the last lap melee after getting shoved to the apron.

Dover In-Car Audio

October 1, 2012 by admin 5287Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2012%2F10%2F01%2Fjeff-gordon-dover-in-car-audio-aaa-400-2012-nascar%2FDover+In-Car+Audio2012-10-01+21%3A44%3A31adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5287

Jeff Gordon’s late summer/early fall streak continued as he posted his fifth top-3 finish in the last six races with a runner-up finish in the AAA 400 at Dover Speedway. Gordon ran in the top-10 for the balance of the day, but relied on a splash of gas during the last caution period to make it to the finish. By doing so, he improved his finishing position by at least 5 spots. He moved up to 10th in the points standings, but trails leader (and Dover winner) Brad Keselowski by 48 points.

Gordon started 7th and moved into the top-5 within 10 laps. His forward march continued as he took 4th on lap 15, but was unable to make further headway before a debris caution on lap 70. Gordon dropped a spot on pit stops and restarted in 5th place on lap 78. He took 4th from Clint Bowyer after the 100-lap mark but ran distantly behind the top-3 of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Jimmie Johnson. Gordon stayed out to lead a lap during a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 148. A debris caution on lap 178 brought the leaders to pit road. Brad Keselowski tracked down Gordon and dropped him to 5th on lap 214. Another debris caution brought the leaders to pit road on lap 247. Gordon held the 5th spot through the pit stop sequence. On the restart, Gordon fell to 7th after Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards went by.

With just over 100 laps to go, Gordon passed Edwards. A caution with 90 laps to go for Matt Kenseth’s suspension issues brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon gained a position on pit road and restarted in 5th place. He lost a spot to Bowyer before Kenseth brought out another caution after a spin in turn 4. Gordon came to pit road to top off the fuel tank. He restarted in 7th place with 78 laps to go. As the laps wound down, Gordon took 6th from Bowyer and moved back into the top-5 with a pass on Kasey Kahne with 48 to go. After Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin pitted for fuel, Gordon moved to 3rd. He took 2nd from Jimmie Johnson with 6 laps to go while the #48 was trying to conserve fuel to the finish.

Turning point
Gordon topped off on fuel during the last caution and was able to make it to the finish — salvaging a better finish than his car was during the event.

 JG’s commments
“We struggled a little bit on the shorter runs, but when we got going the car was a good top-3 or top-4 car. I’m proud of this team. We’re just taking a few steps in the points every week. We’ve got 7 more weeks to get it done… “We’re not going to win this championship against those guys up front if they keep running where they’re running. Our focus is top-5’s, try to win and if we keep running like this, we’ll get wins. We can’t control what others guys do.”

“Today was a good day; a solid day. The car was good. We were better on the long runs than we were on the short runs. We just couldn’t get going on the restarts. The front tires would just not work. I don’t know; maybe the splitter was hitting or something. So we had issues with that. We were trying to resolve those and it actually worked to our favor because we had to come in and top-off and make a couple of adjustments and then we didn’t have to save fuel there at the end and the car was really good. I thought me and Mark Martin were going to battle it out for the win. He was chasing me down there and those other guys were saving fuel; all but the No. 2 (Keselowski) car and we just came up a little bit short. All in all, it was a great day.”

AS YOU WERE CHASING DOWN BRAD KESELOWSKI THERE AT THE END, DID YOU THINK YOU WERE GOING TO GET HIM?
“The car was really working well through the middle part of that run. The race kind of fell in our lap. We fell back on our restart and had some issues just getting going and then that caution came out and we decided to top-off, so it kind of played to our favor, where we didn’t have to save fuel. The car was just really good on that run. But right there with about 15 (laps) to go, I started getting really, really tight. So I saw I was catching those guys, I was just hoping that they were going to have to save fuel. And everybody did but the No. 2. We knew coming into the Chase that the fuel mileage would be a factor and we’ve known that we’ve been behind on that. The No. 2 car, they’ve got something figured out on fuel mileage. Credit to them. They’ve done their homework and it’s gotten them some wins and it got them one today. But it was a great run for this team.”
