Tony Stewart won his first race of the 2013 season after passing Juan Pablo Montoya with 3 laps to go. Jeff Gordon might have been able to run down the top-2 with a few extra laps, but came in 3rd after a pit gamble paid off. It was Gordon’s second consecutive top-5 finish and the 301st of his career — tying him with David Pearson in career top-5’s. The finish propelled Gordon up to 11th in the series standings.

Gordon started 20th and gained 4 spots in the first 20 laps. He moved to 15th on lap 30 while complaining about handling issues. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 73. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 79 with Gordon in 14th place. He pitted for tires and restarted in 13th place on lap 85. However, Gordon faded on the restart and ran 17th on lap 90. As the air pressures came up in the tires, Gordon gained back spots and ran 15th at the 100-lap mark. The handling fell off on the longer run and Gordon fell to 17th on lap 120. The second debris caution brought pit stops on lap 127. He gained 2 spots on pit road and another 2 on the track to run 13th on lap 150. The next caution waved for Matt Kenseth’s blown engine on lap 160. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 12th place.

Gordon moved to 11th after the halfway mark, but dropped to 12th when Tony Stewart went by on lap 220. Following a green flag pit stop on lap 238, Gordon ran in 15th place in danger of going a lap down. He moved to 14th prior to a caution on lap 280 for Martin Truex’s engine. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 13th place. Gordon ran 14th at lap 300 when the caution waved for Ryan Newman and David Gilliland’s wreck on the backstretch. Gordon restarted 14th on lap 306 and dropped to 15th by lap 310. Kasey Kahne’s spin and subsequent wall contact brought out the caution on lap 317. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 2nd place — the high water mark of his day.

On the restart, Gordon fell to 4th within one lap. However, on the long green flag run, Gordon needed to stop one more time for fuel. He received a much-needed break with 24 laps to go when Denny Hamlin cut a tire and hit the wall. The crew changed four tires and Gordon restarted 7th with 20 to go. He took 6th from Brad Keselowski with 17 to go and entered the top-5 when Jimmie Johnson was penalized for jumping the restart. Gordon took 3rd from Kyle Busch with 13 to go and posted his second straight top-5 finish at Dover.

Turning point
Crew chief Alan Gustafson kept Gordon on the track during a caution period on lap 317. That allowed him to move from 14th to 2nd. A well-timed caution flag with 24 laps to go clinched a top-5 finish.

JG’s comments
“We needed some things to go our way and that’s something that’s been hit or miss for us this year. Finally things went our way. We made a call to stay out, which obviously paid off and gave us some good track position. The car drove pretty good up front there. We needed a caution. You hate to see what happened to Denny, but it certainly paid off for us. Then we had a car with 4 tires that really took off. I was able to get by Kyle, but it started getting really loose on me as I caught the other two. All I could do was watch at that point. We almost got Montoya on the last lap, but it almost cost us another position. It’s a great top-3.”

“It was a fantastic finish for us. We battled hard all day long in 13th/14th — I think we got up to maybe 10th at one time. It’s frustrating when you think that you have a better car than that. You’re trying to make adjustments on the pit stops and play the right tire strategy, but you’re just not making any ground up. We just got fortunate there where we only had a few laps on the tires and we decided to stay out. Right away on the restart I knew that clean air made a huge difference. We were able to stay up there in 3rd or 4th for that entire run. We knew we needed the caution to come out. You hate to see it happen the way it did. But it paid off for us to be able to come in and get four tires and have a good restart there to get 3rd.”

IS THIS A TURNING POINT FOR YOUR SEASON?

“It’s certainly a great feeling. We’ve been running good. We just have had some things happen to us. Kind of like last year some were self-inflicted and some things were out of our hands. We just have to fight. We fought hard today. This is a tough place because it’s hot and slick. It wasn’t an easy race and this team just never gave up. That’s what got us in the Chase last year. That’s what’s going to get us in there this year. It’s so hard. Everytime we have a finish like we did at Darlington or a finish like today or even a good run at Charlotte, it’s just never over until it’s over. We just can’t ever seem to get momentum. All I can tell you is that our pit crew has definitely improved. We made a little change there and it’s paying off for us. Our cars have improved so that always makes life a little easier. Now I just have to make sure I don’t make any mistakes. I think Alan will probably second that. We just have to be really solid and get the results that we’re capable of getting. Today was a great race for us just because we were sitting there 12th, 13th, 14th. We stay out and all of a sudden here we are 3rd. So that’s a great lesson for us somewhere when we go to other tracks as well.”

May 11, 2013 by admin 58271 Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2013%2F05%2F11%2Fjeff-gordon-bojangles-southern-500-darlington-in-car-audio-2013%2FDarlington+In-Car+Audio2013-05-12+03%3A35%3A42adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5827

Jeff Gordon scored the 300th top-5 finish in his 700th career start. Gordon led 16 laps in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, but was unable to gain track position late in the event to challenge for the win.

Gordon started 8th and moved to 6th by the end of lap 4. He dropped to 7th on lap 14 when Matt Kenseth went by. Gordon battled a tight handling condition and fell back to 8th on lap 20. Gordon moved back into 7th place after getting around Martin Truex on lap 45. Gordon came in for a green flag pit stop on lap 53 and returned to the race in 9th place. He moved to 8th prior to the next green flag stop on lap 103. Gordon ran 9th when a debris caution slowed the field on lap 124. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting 8th on lap 129. He advanced two spots shortly after the restart and ran 6th on lap 140. Gordon took 5th from Kurt Busch on lap 151. Following a pit stop, Gordon assumed the lead for 15 laps before Kyle Busch took the top spot on lap 205.

Gordon dropped to 5th prior to a round of green flag pit stops. The second caution waved with 66 laps to go when Regan Smith spun. Gordon restarted 6th with 59 to go and moved to 5th prior to Casey Mears’ crash two laps later. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 4th place. On the restart, Gordon fell to 7th after Matt Kenseth spun his tires in front of him. A caution for Josh Wise’s crash slowed the field with 39 to go. Pit stops ensued and Gordon restarted 6th with 35 to go. The next caution waved when Kasey Kahne crashed in turn 1. Gordon moved up to 4th for the restart with 30 to go. He closed in on Denny Hamlin for 3rd but was unable to make headway and finished 4th.

The 4th place effort was Gordon’s 300th career top-5 finish. He became the 2nd youngest driver in NASCAR history to reach the milestone.

Turning point
Track position hindered Gordon’s shot at a victory, but he scored a much-needed top-5 finish — just his second top-5 of the season.

JG’s comments
“I was excited that Darlington was going to be the 700th start. This team was ready to go out there and do battle. That’s what it takes at this tough race track. I’m really proud of this team. I thought Alan called a great race. We made the right adjustments at the right time and got good track position with tires at the end. So, we needed track position. I thought our car was actually pretty fast there at the end. We just couldn’t quite get it. We were always balancing between tight and loose. Right there at the end was about the best the car had been. It took off really good, but it started getting tight on me. Then Jimmie started catching us. I think that’s about the best we could have asked for, but you always want to get out there in clean traffic and see what it will do.”

Jeff Gordon scored his 87th career win as he played fuel mileage strategy to perfection at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The win allowed Gordon to finish in the top-10 for the 18th time in 20 NASCAR Cup series seasons.

Gordon started 11th and fell to 13th by lap 3. He moved back up to run 11th by lap 20 while battling a tight handling condition. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 25 with a pass on Mark Martin. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 47 and cycled through in 9th place. He soon lost a spot to Brad Keselowski on lap 51. However, he made steady progress as the run continued and ran 8th on lap 70. The first caution waved on lap 78 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 7th place. He took 6th from Carl Edwards and entered the top-5 with a pass on Jimmie Johnson by the 100-lap mark. Gordon passed Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth in the next 10 laps to run 3rd on lap 110. Green flag pit stops came on lap 131. A caution for debris slowed the field 10 laps later. Gordon opted for 4 tires on the pit stop and restarted in 11th place.

Ricky Stenouse’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 156. Gordon took fuel only on the pit stop and restarted 10th. On fresher tires than most drivers ahead of him, Gordon moved to 5th place with 85 to go. Gordon stayed on the track during a green flag pit stop sequence and led a lap before coming to pit road. He returned to the race in 8th position and quickly moved to 6th. With 40 laps to go. Gordon moved to 4th as Brad Keselowski clinched the 2012 Sprint Cup championship after Jimmie Johnson dropped out of the race.

Gordon took 3rd from Carl Edwards with 36 to go. Since he didn’t need to make another stop, Gordon took the lead after Kyle Busch and Martin Truex pitted. He led Clint Bowyer by more than 2 seconds in the closing laps and scored his second victory of 2012. Gordon has visited Victory Lane at every track he’s ever competed on in the NASCAR Cup series — except Kentucky.

Turning point
Gordon stretched his fuel to the final pit stop and didn’t need to come in when race leaders Kyle Busch and Martin Truex came to pit road with under 15 laps to go.

It wasn’t a victory for Jeff Gordon, but a solid 3rd place effort in the Sylvania 300 kept him from falling further behind in the NASCAR standings. It was Gordon’s fourth top-3 finish in the last 5 races. Gordon entered the event trailing by 47 points, and is now 45 points behind. Unfortunately, there are 11 drivers to overcome.

Gordon started on the pole and led the first 3 laps until Tony Stewart took the top spot. Kyle Busch moved past Gordon on lap 11. He held the 3rd spot until the competition caution on lap 40. Gordon re-assumed the lead following pit stops as he accelerated from the first pit stall. Busch took the lead from Gordon just one lap after the restart. He dropped to 3rd on lap 70 after Kasey Kahne passed, and fell to 4th when Denny Hamlin went by on lap 76. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 109 and held 4th place through the cycle of stops. A debris caution on lap 129 slowed the field and brought most of the leaders to pit road. Gordon restarted in 11th and moved into the top-10 on lap 135. At the halfway point of the event, Gordon moved to 8th but was complaining of a lack of rear grip in the car.

Gordon’s forward progress continued as he passed Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch to take 6th place on lap 175. A debris caution on lap 178 brought pit stops. Gordon held 6th place through the stops. As Hamlin pulled away with a comfortable lead, Gordon took 5th from Tony Stewart on lap 231. He took 4th from Brian Vickers with 60 to go. Gordon’s final pit stop came under green with 53 to go. He cycled through in 5th after Brad Keselowski took 2 tires. After moving to 4th, the caution waved with 30 laps to go for debris. On the restart, Gordon jumped to the inside to take 3rd from Clint Bowyer.

Turning point
A debris caution with 30 laps to go gave Gordon the restart he needed to get past Clint Bowyer for his fourth top-3 finish in the last 5 races.

Bristol In-Car Audio

August 26, 2012 by admin 5143Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2012%2F08%2F26%2Fjeff-gordon-bristol-irwin-tools-night-race-in-car-audio-nascar%2FBristol+In-Car+Audio2012-08-26+16%3A51%3A36adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5143

It wasn’t a victory, but Jeff Gordon’s 3rd place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway moved him closer to Kyle Busch for the final NASCAR Chase wildcard spot. It was Gordon’s 7th top-6 finish in the last 10 races.

Gordon started 11th and moved to 8th by the end of lap 5. The first caution waved on lap 10 for Ken Schrader’s crash following contact from Jason Leffler. Gordon moved up to 6th shortly after the restart and held the position for the next 30 laps. He moved into the top-5 with a pass on Casey Mears on lap 49. He fell to 6th when Kasey Kahne passed on lap 55, and slipped to 8th by lap 75. A debris caution on lap 82 slowed the field and brought pit stops with Gordon back in 10th place. Gordon took four tires and restarted in 15th place. He dropped to 17th before the next caution for Sam Hornish’s wall contact on lap 122. Adjustments followed with Gordon restarting in 18th. He moved to 15th by lap 140, and ran in 13th when the caution waved for David Ragan’s spin on lap 149. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 4th place. He moved to 2nd on the restart, but dropped to 3rd when Brian Vickers passed on lap 176.

Ryan Newman’s wreck on lap 190 brought out the caution. Gordon came to pit road and restarted in 15th place. He was unable to move forward before the next caution for Aric Almirola’s wall contact on lap 223. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 8th place. At the halfway point, he ran in 5th place. Gordon took 4th on lap 255 before a caution for Brad Keselowski’s spin on lap 270. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 2nd place alongside Jimmie Johnson. A caution on lap 322 brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon beat Johnson off pit road and restarted in 8th place — behind the cars that stayed on the track. He moved up to 3rd when Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart crashed while racing for the lead.

However, Gordon fell to 10th on lap 346 after getting into oil from Dave Blaney’s car before a caution flag. Gordon opted for fuel only to ensure he could make it to the finish. He dropped to 14th on lap 360 and moved to 12th before a caution for Casey Mears on lap 412. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 5th place with 80 laps to go. He slipped to 8th before the next caution with 76 laps to go. Gordon moved to 6th with 67 laps to go before the next caution for Danica Patrick’s crash following contact from Regan Smith. With 45 laps to go, he took 4th when Brian Vickers slid backwards while trying to take the race lead from Carl Edwards. Gordon moved to 3rd with 33 laps to go and trailed Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson for the lead. He came across the line in 3rd — distantly behind race winner Hamlin.

Turning point
Gordon never led the event but used pit strategy and caution laps to ensure he had enough fuel to make it to the finish with a solid effort

Brickyard 400 In-Car Audio

July 30, 2012 by admin 5043Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2012%2F07%2F30%2Fjeff-gordon-brickyard-400-in-car-audio-indianapolis-2012-nascar%2FBrickyard+400+In-Car+Audio2012-07-31+00%3A06%3A24adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5043

Jeff Gordon posted his fifth top-6 finish in the last six races with a 5th place effort in the Brickyard 400. However, after running 2nd to eventual race winner Jimmie Johnson during the mid-stages, Gordon fell to 7th following the final pit stop. He’ll need at least two victories in the next 6 races to qualify for the Chase for the Championship.

Gordon started 9th and moved to 7th by the end of the second lap. He moved to 6th with a pass on Joey Logano on lap 5. However, he complained of a tight handling condition entering the turns and dropped 5 seconds behind race leader Denny Hamlin. He moved to 5th on lap 12 when Carl Edwards slowed with an engine problem, and took 4th from Greg Biffle on lap 19. Gordon came to pit road for a four-tire change on lap 29 and returned to the race in 4th. The first caution waved on lap 40 when Travis Kvapil cut a tire and hit the wall. Gordon opted for two tires, but lost three positions on pit road and restarted 7th on lap 44. Gordon moved up to 5th before the next caution on lap 47 for Clint Bowyer’s spin into the infield grass. He took 4th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 60, and moved to 3rd when Brad Keselowski came to pit road. Three laps later he took the runner-up spot from Greg Biffle.

Gordon closed in on race leader Jimmie Johnson and led 1 lap during a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 74. Following stops, he ran 3rd behind Keselowski and Johnson. Gordon again moved to 2nd on lap 90 following Keselowski’s pit stop. A caution for Casey Mears’ wall contact slowed the field on lap 94. Following pit stops, Gordon restarted in 5th on lap 99. He moved to 3rd shortly after the restart by passing Keselowski and Regan Smith. Gordon took 2nd from Kyle Busch on lap 110, but was more than 3 seconds behind Johnson for the race lead. A caution on lap 124 for Jeff Burton’s tire issue brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon lost four spots on pit road and restarted in 6th place. He dropped to 7th before getting around Ryan Newman with 29 to go. A caution with 28 laps to go slowed the field when Joey Logano spun and collected Matt Kenseth. On the restart with 20 laps to go, Gordon dropped to 8th as Newman and Martin Truex went by. However, he rebounded to pass Truex and Newman in the closing stages to take 5th place.

Turning point
Gordon was running in 2nd when the caution waved on lap 124. A brief problem on the right front caused Gordon to leave pit road in 6th place, thus removing any chance at a possible victory.

JG’s comments
“We had a car that could compete for the win. I think we were one of the only ones who could compete with the 48. Congratulations to Jimmie and Chad, and the whole Lowe’s team and Rick Hendrick. They’re that good and they deserved to be in Victory Lane today. They were the best team and they had a fast race car. We had as good of a race car if not better. We just could never get the track position, and when we did it was so hard to pass. Our car was awesome. We lost some track position and then the restarts I was starting on the outside both times — that definitely didn’t do us any favors. It was hard to pass. I can’t complain about it too much, just would’ve liked to have been up there battling with Jimmie, at least make it a little harder on him. My gosh, he had it pretty easy there at the end.”

ON HIS RACE:
“I don’t think we could have passed him (Jimmie Johnson). Those guys were definitely the class of the field today and had the track position. They’re a strong team. They deserve that win today. They did everything. Jimmie did his job on the track and the team did their job in the pits. And they had a good car.”

YOU CAME HERE TO WIN, BUT IS THERE ANY SATISFACTION IN FINISHING 5TH?

“I’m pretty disappointed really. It’s always nice to finish in the top five but at this point in the season, the way our season has gone with so many missed opportunities that we’ve had, I feel like it was a little bit of a missed opportunity today. We needed track position there at the end and we didn’t get it when it counted most and it cost us.”

TALK ABOUT THAT LAST PIT STOP. WAS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY THAT HAPPENED OR WAS IT JUST SLOW?

“I have no idea. I have to review it. The one thing about this pit road is that if you get a little bit behind, once you get up here, you’re way behind because they pull out in front of you and the next one pulls out in front of you and that’s what happened. We lost more than we should have but that wasn’t so bad. The worst thing was when you start on the outside lane; my car would just not go on that outside lane. And then they got all jumbled up and we lost even more spots. And then we had another caution on the outside lane again, so it just wasn’t our day.”

YOUR TEAMMATE DALE EARNHARDT JR. TOOK OVER THE POINT LEAD TODAY.

“I give them a lot of credit. It’s really awesome that they’re out front. They’ve been consistent and if they can keep that consistency up and maybe even take it up a notch when the Chase starts, they’re going to be a real threat for the championship. So, they’re running good. It’s good to see it. I’m happy to see it for Junior. I’m really happy to see it for (crew chief) Stevie (Letarte) and that whole team. They’ve put a lot of effort into it.”

WHERE DO YOU RANK YOUR CAR?

“I thought we were as good as or better than Jimmie (Johnson). We just never could get in front of him. That’s what it takes to win. You’ve got to get out front. Track position is very important here. We showed that we could run their pace, but we were always coming from behind.”

WHEN YOU FIRST MET JIMMIE JOHNSON, DID YOU THINK HE WOULD BE THIS GOOD?

“I knew he was special and talented. The type of equipment he was in [Herzog Motorsports] was not the best equipment out there. It was good equipment, but not the best. I knew if you took a guy who had worked that hard and has raced that long with his talents, and put him with a good team, that he’d be able to do something special. I had no idea he was going to do what he has done, that’s way beyond any of our imagination, including his. He’s a great guy and a great driver. He has a great team. They deserve it.”

YOU MADE UP A LOT OF SPOTS IN THE LAST HANDFUL OF LAPS. DO YOU THINK IF YOU HAD A RESTART A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE FRONT, THAT YOU WOULD HAVE AT LEAST FINISHED 2ND?

“I think we were a second-place car really, all day. We could pass everybody but Jimmie. That clean are is really important. So, yeah I think we were good enough to be second, but we weren’t going to pass Jimmie under green flag conditions.”

THE FANS CHEERED REALLY LOUD FOR YOU AT THE END OF THE RACE. WERE YOU HAPPY WITH THE CAR AT THE END OF THE RACE?

“I happy with the car. Other than the first run, I was happy with the car all day. Or, maybe the second run. We were a little bit too tight. We freed it up and from that point on, I thought we had the car to beat. We just never could never quite get that track position and get close enough to that No. 48 to try to make a pass on him. But it was a good solid day for us. You know I love this place.”

Jeff Gordon posted a 5th place finish in the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway. It was Gordon’s third consecutive top-10 effort — the first time he’s posted three straight top-10’s since October/November 2011.

Gordon started 9th and dropped to 17th by lap 10. However, he began gaining ground later in the run and moved up to 14th on lap 17. The first caution waved on lap 40 for Scott Riggs’ slow car with Gordon up to the 11th position. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 10th place. He dropped back to 12th within 5 laps of the restart before moving forward. He re-entered the top-10 by lap 65. Green flag pit stops came just before the 100-lap mark with Gordon cycling through in 11th place. He once again entered the top-10 on lap 116 with a pass on Greg Biffle. The second caution waved on lap 126 for debris. Gordon came to pit road for a four tire change and exited in 13th place. On the restart, Gordon moved through traffic and ran 7th at the halfway point.

A caution for Dave Blaney’s engine on lap 150 slowed the field and brought pit stops. Gordon changed two tires and departed in 6th place. He moved into the top-5 on lap 157 and took 4th from Kyle Busch on lap 162. Dale Earnhardt Jr took 4th from Gordon on lap 195. Green flag pit stops came on lap 202 with Gordon cycling through in 5th place. Ryan Newman’s wall contact on lap 210 brought out the caution flag. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 8th place. Gordon moved up to 6th on lap 224, but dropped a spot to Martin Truex on lap 225. Kasey Kahne passed on lap 230 to drop Gordon back to 8th. As the laps wound down, Gordon made up spots and finished 5th. It was his second best finish of 2012.

Turning point
Gordon’s second best finish of the year was a solid night for the #24 team. Pit calls were mostly conservative except for a two-tire change on lap 150.

JG’s comments

DID THE CAR GO AWAY NEAR THE END OF THAT LAST RUN?

At the very last run it did, but we still actually were able to hold onto the guys. I think two tires were better for us than four. When we took four, prior to that, we just needed to make a little bit bigger adjustment. The car got really loose getting in the corner and it was pretty tough to hang onto at that point. But the track cooled down and it seemed like everybody got a little bit loose, especially getting into the corner. But we fought our way through. It was a pretty flawless night and I was excited that we came home with a fifth place finish, battling up front like we did.”

ON THE NEXT THREE TRACKS, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN REEL OFF SOME WINS?

“Yeah, we’ve just got to keep going to the race track and putting the effort out that we’ve been putting out. This team has been awesome. The cars have definitely shown that; and lately we’ve been getting the results. So you can definitely put some momentum on that and we’ve got some great tracks that are coming. To get a top-five here at Kentucky, which is definitely one of my worst race tracks, I feel like; to come home with a top five tells you just how strong our cars are and our team is and what we’re capable of doing. So, Daytona is going to be its own beast, but from that point on I think we’ve got the opportunity to not only put top-five’s together, but also get some wins.”

Jeff Gordon didn’t win the Samsung 500, but he scored a much-needed 4th place finish — his first top-5 of the 2012 season. Gordon started 34th and moved to 26th by the end of lap 3. However, his forward progress became more arduous as he gained just three more spots in the next 25 laps. Gordon entered the top-20 with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 36. Gordon came to pit road under green on lap 45 and cycled through in 16th place. He gained two spots over the next 20 laps and ran 14th on lap 65. The first caution waved for debris on lap 67, which brought the lead lap cars to pit road. After the restart, Gordon took 12th from Tony Stewart on lap 76, and entered the top-10 on lap 85 with a pass on Kevin Harvick. He moved up to 9th before the second caution flag on lap 95 for Trevor Bayne’s wall contact.

Gordon ran in the lower half of the top-10 over the next 50 laps before a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 145. He moved to 7th on lap 157 and took 6th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 175. Following a cycle of pit stops, Gordon ran in 8th place on lap 200. He quickly moved to 6th by passing Earnhardt Jr and Harvick. Gordon entered the top-5 and then took 4th from Matt Kenseth on lap 264. Following a round of green flag stops with 50 to go, Gordon ran in 5th place. He re-took 4th from Kenseth with 37 laps to go. He crossed the line in 4th, distantly behind race winner Greg Biffle. Gordon scored his first top-5 finish of the season and his best finish in the last 11 races dating back to October 2011.

*Gordon has led at least 1 lap in each of the first 7 races of the season for the first time since 1995.
*He moved up 4 spots in the series standings to 17th.

Turning point
Gordon’s car was hooked up from the outset as he drove the final 200+ laps without a caution. The turning point, ultimately, came on Friday afternoon during his qualifying run. By starting 34th, his chances of a victory were essentially eliminated due to the long green flag run nature of the race.

JG’s comments
“I don’t feel like I’ve had bad luck. A couple of things were self-induced, a couple of things were out of our control, but we’ve been running so well. It’s nice to have everything come together tonight. Starting 34th, we had our work cut out for us, but this team did an amazing job. I’m so proud of everyone on this team. What a race car we had. I mean to drive up through there with only two cautions in the top five. I could almost get to Mark (Martin) there at the end but we had a great night, a great car and we had this many times this year. We just haven’t been able to get it all the way to the finish. So, tonight we finally did. This is something we can build on. I’m so proud of this team and I can’t wait to go to Kansas.”

Tony Stewart claimed his third NASCAR championship by winning at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Stewart’s victory thrust him into a points tie with Carl Edwards, who finished second. However, Stewart won the championship due to the first tiebreaker — victories. It was the sixth consecutive season that Hendrick Motorsports’ chassis and engines won the series title. Stewart won 3 out of the last 4 races in the season to claim the championship.

Gordon started 7th and moved to 4th by the conclusion on lap 8. Rain on lap 12 brought out the first caution flag. Gordon came to pit road and exited in 13th place after taking four tires. He re-entered the top-10 on lap 23 and moved up to 5th by lap 30. He passed Ryan Newman for 4th place before a caution on lap 34 for Dave Blaney’s spin. After racing resumed, he took 3rd from Kevin Harvick on lap 46 and moved into the runner-up spot on lap 50. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 80. The field cycled through before David Ragan’s blown engine on lap 83. A caution for rain on lap 108 brought the leaders to pit road for a red flag period.

The race resumed after nearly a 90-minute delay at 6pm. Gordon came to pit road for tires and exited in second place behind Kevin Harvick, who opted for two tires. Gordon took the lead after the restart, but lost the top spot to Tony Stewart after pacing the field for 6 laps. Edwards took the 2nd spot from Gordon on lap 130. A caution for Trevor Bayne’s wall contact brought the field to pit road. Gordon restarted in 5th place on lap 140. However, he slipped to 10th before a caution for Jimmie Johnson’s spin on lap 145. Gordon steadily moved back up to 7th on lap 153. A caution for a multi-car wreck involving Landon Cassill, Trevor Bayne, and Cole Whitt slowed the field on lap 155. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 5th place. He fell to 9th on the restart, but regrouped to take 8th from Newman with 100 laps to go. With 85 to go, Gordon moved into 6th place as championship contenders Edwards and Stewart battled at the front of the field.

Gordon came in for a green flag pit stops with 68 laps to go and cycled through in 6th place. A caution flag for rain with 55 laps to go slowed the field. After a lengthy caution period, Gordon ran 10th with 35 to go while Stewart and Edwards battled 1-2 at the front for the Sprint Cup title. With 20 to go, Gordon moved up to 7th place as Stewart led Edwards by more than a second for the Cup series championship. With 10 to go, Gordon advanced to 5th place.

For the first time, Gordon scored more victories in a season than Johnson. In addition, he led more than 920 laps in a season for the first time since 2007.

Road Ahead: After some down time over the Thanksgiving holiday, Jeff Gordon will head to Las Vegas for the NASCAR banquet on December 2. Following that, he’ll visit Rwanda with his family to view the health situation as the pediatric cancer care center is built.
