September 20 – – Jeff Gordon battled to a 6th place finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and moved up to 5th in the Chase points standings. Gordon took no chances as the laps wound down, electing to pit for fuel to ensure the finish instead of staying out for track position. After Jeff Burton and Tony Stewart ran out of fuel on the white flag lap, Gordon’s decision proved to be the right one.

Gordon started 17th and moved up to 15th within 5 laps. However, the handling became looser and Gordon dropped back to 19th on lap 17 when Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin passed. He re-assumed the 18th position from Hamlin on lap 20. The first caution waved on lap 26 for Scott Speed’s wreck on the frontstretch. The lead lap cars came to pit road with Gordon dropping to 22nd after a four tire change. Within five laps of the restart, he moved back up to 17th. Lap 39 brought out the caution for a spin involving Marcos Ambrose and Paul Menard. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for 2 tires which dropped him out of the top-20. On the restart, Gordon moved up to 16th within four laps by taking a spot on the outside of Denny Hamlin. On lap 70 he passed Ryan Newman for the 14th position. Gordon stayed out during a pit stop cycle to lead lap 111 before coming to pit road.

Gordon moved up to 10th before a debris caution at the halfway point. The lead lap cars came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 9th place. He ran in 9th for the balance of the fuel run before taking 8th from Kurt Busch on lap 190. A caution for Mark Martin’s cut tire with 94 laps to go brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon picked up two spots and departed in 5th place. He moved to 4th when Carl Edwards spun Denny Hamlin in turn four with 86 laps to go. Gordon pushed Tony Stewart into the lead on the restart and settled into 3rd behind Stewart and Clint Bowyer. Gordon took the runner-up spot from Bowyer with 80 to go. Two laps later Kurt Busch spun in turn two. That set off a chain reaction of spinning that collected Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson. Gordon came to pit road to top off the fuel to ensure he could make it to the finish. He restarted in 8th with 71 laps to go.

Matt Kenseth’s wall contact with 66 to go brought out the caution — which Gordon needed to see to be safe to the end on fuel. Gordon moved up to 4th place for the restart with 63 laps to go. Three laps later, Bowyer took the spot from Gordon. A caution for Joey Logano’s spin with 59 to go slowed the field. On the restart, Dale Earnhardt Jr took 5th. Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin passed Gordon for position with 46 laps to go, sending Gordon back to 8th. On the final lap, Gordon picked up two spots after Stewart and Jeff Burton ran out of gas. He finished 6th and moved up three spots in the series standings to 5th. However, his gap to the leader increased from 60 to 75 points

June 28 – – Jimmie Johnson paced the field in both practice sessions on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. That turned out to be foreboding as Johnson made a late pass on Kurt Busch to win his 52nd career race on the 1-mile oval. Since New Hampshire in the first race in the Chase, make no mistake that Johnson will be the driver to beat — both at Loudon and for the title.

For Jeff Gordon, a solid 4th place finish should serve him well when the series returns to New Hampshire Motor Speedway in mid-September. Gordon started 16th and lost three spots before the tire pressures came up. Gordon then moved back into the 16th position on lap 7. One lap later he took 15th from David Ragan. On lap 14, he passed Paul Menard and Marcos Ambrose to move into the 13th spot. Gordon gained two more spots on lap 18 with passes on Jeff Burton and Brad Keselowski. He entered the top-10 on lap 22 by taking the low line in the corner to pass Joey Logano. Three laps later he took 9th from Sam Hornish. The caution flag waved on lap 35 for debris on the track. Gordon came to pit road for four tires and departed in 12th place due to several drivers opting for two tires. Gordon re-entered the top-10 on lap 40, and took 8th from Joey Logano on lap 43. However, his forward march stalled as Burton took 8th on lap 50. Ten laps later, Mark Martin pulled to the inside on the backstretch and allowed Gordon to move into 7th place. On lap 85, he got a strong run off turn two and took 6th from Kyle Busch. Gordon came in for a green flag pit stop on lap 108 and cycled through in 6th. On lap 121, he took 5th place from Tony Stewart.

At the halfpoint point, Gordon passed Juan Pablo Montoya for the 4th position. Gordon came to pit road for tires under green on lap 179 complaining of a loose handling condition. Following the cycle of stops, Gordon ran in 6th place. On lap 208, he took 5th from Kasey Kahne who was experiencing engine problems. Gordon fell back to 6th on lap 230 when Jimmie Johnson went by. However, he moved back into 5th when Tony Stewart pitted under green on lap 235. The caution waved on lap 236 when Kahne’s engine blew. Gordon came to pit road for tires and departed in 4th place. On lap 248, Montoya slid into Gordon in turn three and pushed him up the track — putting him back to 6th place. Gordon muscled his way around Montoya into 5th on lap 250. Kurt Busch eventually passed to put Gordon back in 6th. With 20 to go, Montoya wrecked in turn three after Reed Sorensen moved up the track. Gordon came to pit road and opted for two tires. He restarted in 4th with 13 to go. Johnson took the race lead from Burton and pulled away, while Gordon fell back to 5th. Two laps later he moved back to 4th when Burton and Kyle Busch spun in turn four to bring out a caution. Gordon moved to 3rd on the restart just before Kurt Busch nudged Johnson out of the lead. Stewart took the 3rd spot from Gordon with 6 to go with a strong move in turn two. With 2 to go, Johnson re-took the lead from Busch en route to the win.

September 20 – – A 15th place effort was not the way that Jeff Gordon wanted to begin the Chase for the Championship.  He’ll have to climb out of a 100+ point deficit due to the substandard finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Gordon started 10th and moved to 7th on lap 3 by using the outside line.  He took the 6th position from Martin Truex Jr on lap 10, and moved into the top-5 on lap 14.  Gordon patiently worked through lapped traffic and took 4th from Denny Hamlin on lap 52.  Twelve laps later, he dove to the inside of Kurt Busch on the backstretch and moved to 3rd.  The first caution waved on lap 66 for Kasey Kahne’s blown engine.  Pit stops ensued with Gordon departing pit road in 5th position after overshooting his stall coming in.

On the restart, Gordon dropped to 7th as the outside line had the momentum, and Jimmie Johnson zoomed past on the inside.  Gordon held 7th as the air pressures stabilized, before a debris caution on lap 85.  The leaders elected to stay on the track.  Gordon faded to 12th within two laps of the restart.  On lap 115, he took 11th from Brian Vickers, and re-entered the top-10 on lap 119.  Gordon moved up to 9th on lap 125 from Ryan Newman.  A debris caution brought the leaders to pit road on lap 135, with Gordon departing in the 8th position.  He held 8th on the restart and ran there for 20 laps before Erik Darnell brought out the caution.  Gordon opted for fuel only and was the 2nd car off of pit road.  He restarted in 9th due to drivers staying on the track.  A multi-car incident on lap 169 collected Paul Menard, Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip, John Andretti, and Robby Gordon.

Gordon restarted 10th and moved to 9th before Jeff Burton’s spin on lap 176.  David Stremme’s wall contact brought the caution and the leaders to pit road with just over 100 laps to go.  Gordon opted for right side tires and restarted in 14th place.  He struggled with the handling and opted for wholesale changed during the next pit stop on lap 250.  He dropped to 18th before a debris caution with 23 laps to go.  Gordon opted to come to pit road for fresh tires in the hopes of making a final charge.  Gordon restarted 19th with 18 laps to go.   He moved up to 15th at the finish.   At the front of the field, points leader Mark Martin held off Denny Hamlin and Juan Pablo Montoya to win his 5th race of the season.

New Hampshire – In Car Audio

June 28, 2009 by admin 18431 Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F06%2F28%2Fnew-hampshire-in-car-audio%2FNew+Hampshire+-+In+Car+Audio2009-06-28+23%3A14%3A07adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1843

June 29 – – Although Jeff Gordon didn’t come away with a victory in the rain-shortened Lenox 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a strong 2nd place effort showed that Gordon had made significant improvement on the flat tracks. Since New Hampshire is the first race in the ‘chase for the championship,’ the strong effort in June should pay dividends in mid-September.

Gordon started on the outside of the front row and immediately jumped into the lead. However, he lost the top spot to Kurt Busch on lap 7. A caution for Patrick Carpentier’s brush with the wall slowed the field on lap 15. Gordon, and most of the top-10, elected to stay on the track. On the restart, he powered ahead of Busch on the outside line to take the lead. Jamie McMurray’s wreck on lap 22 slowed the field. Gordon chose the inside line for the restart and jumped to the outside to hold onto the lead heading into the first turn. Once again, the green flag run was short-lived as A.J. Allmendinger’s spin brought the caution out on lap 28. On the next restart, Busch jumped to the lead on the outside line.

A competition caution on lap 45 brought the field to pit road. Gordon departed pit road with the lead. He chose the outside line for the restart, and subsequently lost the lead to Jimmie Johnson.

Gordon settled in behind Johnson until green flag pit stops on lap 124. Gordon trailed his Hendrick Motorsports teammate by about one second on the track. A debris caution on lap 155 brought the field to pit road. Gordon opted for two tires and exited pit road with the lead. Gordon took the outside line on the restart and held onto the lead. The caution waved on lap 172 after Paul Menard hit the wall. Gordon once again chose the outside line for the restart. Gordon got a jump on the restart, which allowed him to stay in front of the day’s major incident. Martin Truex was turned sideways by Kyle Busch on the fronstretch while coming up to speed. Truex spun toward the outside wall and collected Casey Mears, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, David Ragan, and Brian Vickers. The race was red-flagged for track clean-up.

Gordon got the jump on the restart on lap 180, but the field only ran three laps before a caution for Joey Logano’s cut tire. Gordon raced to the lead on the restart and battled side-by-side with Tony Stewart for a few laps before Scott Speed’s spin brought out the caution flag on lap 190. On the restart, Stewart battled alongside Gordon and took the lead on the backstretch. Gordon ran 2nd to Stewart before green flag pit stops on lap 235. Gordon beat Stewart off pit road and was in position to take the race lead once the stops cycled through the field. However, with rain showers on the horizon, Ryan Newman and Joey Logano stayed on the track in an effort to win a rain-shortened race. Gordon’s fresh tires cut Newman’s 15 second lead in half with 40 laps to go. Newman came to pit road with 38 laps to go after running out of fuel. Joey Logano inherited the lead as steady rain began falling, thus necessitating a caution flag. Gordon held off Busch for the runner-up position just before the caution flag. The race was red flagged with 27 laps to go. The victory was Logano’s first in the Cup series.

Weighing Risk Versus Reward – New Hampshire Lenox 301

June 24, 2009 by admin 1836Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F06%2F24%2Fweighing-risk-versus-reward-new-hampshire-lenox-301%2FWeighing+Risk+Versus+Reward+-+New+Hampshire+Lenox+3012009-06-24+22%3A02%3A02adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1836

nhfeat-wide

June 24 – – Jeff Gordon has built nearly a 400-point cushion between himself and the cutoff position in the chase for the championship. With 10 events before the chase begins, it’s a near certainty that Gordon will be one of the 12 drivers to qualify. As such, he knows that victories in the next 10 weeks are critical to close the bonus point gap in the chase standings. He trails Kyle Busch and Mark Martin by 20 points, and Jimmie Johnson by 10 points in the chase standings. Gordon hasn’t visited victory lane at New Hampshire Motor Speedway since the infamous tiregate scandal of August 1998. There’s no better time to snap the New England winless drought than Sunday afternoon.
