Matt Kenseth dominated the Pure Michigan 400 by leading 146 of the 200 laps en route to the victory. Jeff Gordon’s final race in Michigan was one to forget as he battled track position and handling to a less than stellar 17th place finish. Gordon dropped to 15th in the NASCAR Chase standings, and has a 55 point cushion over the Chase cutoff with 3 races remaining. It was Gordon’s 3rd finish outside the top-15 in the last 4 races.

Gordon started 21st and dropped to 24th on the opening lap prior to David Ragan’s spin to bring out a caution. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 26th before a debris caution on lap 11. He advanced to 20th at the competition caution on lap 21. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 20th place. Within three laps, he worked his way to 16th. He stayed out to lead a lap during a green flag pit sequence before coming to pit road on lap 61. Gordon ran 15th when a debris caution slowed the field on lap 72. He stayed out and restarted in 8th on lap 76. However, he struggled on the restart and dropped to 17th by lap 80. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 15th place.

Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 103. He cycled through in 14th place. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 121. After pit stops, Gordon restarted in 13th. He moved up to 12th when Clint Bowyer spun on the backstretch to bring out a caution on lap 126. Another caution for Tony Stewart’s spin moved Gordon up to 10th when Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski came to pit road for fuel. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 168 to ensure he could make it to the finish. Gordon cycled through in 12th place. Jimmie Johnson’s spin brought out the caution with 17 to go. Gordon restarted in 10th place with 14 to go. However, he lost spots after being caught in the middle line and dropped to 17th with 10 to go.

After replacing two members of the pit crew on the #24 team this week, it was a miscue on pit road that cost Jeff Gordon at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon was running in the top-15 when he pitted on lap 88. However, the jack came down before the left front lug nuts were tightened. A second pit stop put Gordon a lap down. Heavy rain came on lap 138 which shortened the race.

Under overcast skies, Gordon started 6th and used the outside line to his advantage to move up to 4th on the opening lap. The first caution came on lap 11 for rain, which resulted in a red flag. After a one-hour track drying delay, the field rolled off pit road shortly before 2:30pm/eastern. However, as the field circled the track under caution, the rain once again picked up and brought a second red flag condition. After 45 minutes of track drying, the cars rolled off pit road. The green flag waved on lap 28. Gordon held the 4th spot on the restart and ran there at the lap 40 competition caution. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires. However, with the first stall entering pit road, Gordon was held up by traffic and exited pit road in 13th place. Rain once again picked up and the red flag was displayed for the third time. The restart came at lap 49 and the field ran just 3 laps before a caution for Kyle Busch’s crash coming off turn 4. Gordon slipped to 15th on the inside line. He dropped to 18th after the restart, but worked his way up to 16th by lap 70. He entered the top-15 on lap 75 with a move around Clint Bowyer. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 88. However, Gordon needed to come back to pit road just a lap later to tighten lug nuts on the left front. He cycled through in 38th place, one lap down.

At the halfway point, he ran in 31st place, one lap down. Gordon passed drivers who were a lap down and ran 28th on lap 115. A caution for debris slowed the field on lap 125 with Gordon in 18th place, one lap down. He came to pit road for tires and restarted in 26th place. He moved into the free pass position on lap 131 in 19th place. However, one lap later Ryan Newman went by to put Gordon in 20th place. Rain on lap 137 resulted in a red flag with Gordon in 21st place.

JG’s comments
“We have not had the best of days. Our car was pretty good, but we had an issue on that green flag stop and went down a lap. Things didn’t go very well on that restart. We needed this thing to go all the way.”

For the second time in four weeks, Jeff Gordon scored an impressive victory in the NASCAR Cup series. Gordon pulled away from Joey Logano on the final restart with 17 laps to go en route to his 3rd victory of the season and 91st of his career. Gordon’s 447th top-10 finish moved him past Bobby Allison into sole possession of 3rd all-time in NASCAR history. Gordon started on the pole and opted for the outside line. Joey Logano took the race lead on the inside after exiting turn 2 on the opening lap. The first caution came on lap 4 after Kyle Busch made contact with the wall. Gordon ran 2nd to Logano until the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted in 5th place on lap 24. The next caution came just after the restart when Danica Patrick spun in turn 2. The melee collected Matt Kenseth, Martin Truex, Justin Allagaier, Trevor Bayne, and Michael Annett. Gordon struggled on the restart on lap 30 and dropped to 7th place. He regrouped to take 6th from Jamie McMurray on lap 34 prior to a debris caution on lap 36. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 4th on lap 39. He quickly moved to 2nd on the outside line behind Logano. He tracked down Logano and took the race lead on lap 59 before coming to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 64.

Gordon lost a spot to Logano during the pit sequence as the crew removed a spring rubber. Gordon passed Logano for position as the pit sequence ended, thus giving Gordon the race lead once again. The next caution came on lap 96 for Kyle Larson’s hard crash in turn 3. Gordon came to pit road for 4 tires and restarted in 5th place. He slipped to 7th on the inside line before taking 6th from Greg Biffle on lap 110. Five laps later, he re-entered the top-5 with a move around McMurray. Gordon advanced to 3rd on lap 125 with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr, and took the runner-up spot from Kevin Harvick on lap 133. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 139. When the sequence cycled through, Gordon had the race lead. He extended his lead to 2 seconds before a green flag stop for two tires on lap 166. Logano cycled through with the race lead just ahead of Gordon after the round of stops.

A caution for Brad Keselowski’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 168. Gordon lined up alongside Logano for the restart with 28 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 3rd on the inside line after the restart. A caution for Brian Vickers’ spin with 26 laps to go brought another restart. He took 2nd when Kurt Busch slammed the wall with 23 laps to go, which brought out the caution. On the restart with 17 to go, Gordon shot into the lead heading into turn 1. He pulled away for his 3rd win of the season and 91st of his career.

Turning point
Gordon got a strong restart on the inside of Logano with 17 laps to go. He shot into the lead and never looked back.

JG’s comments
“It wasn’t easy. It’s never easy to win at any of these tracks, especially when aerodynamics and track position mean so much. I thought we learned a lot the last time we were here on track position. Alan just called a perfect race. I kept getting on that inside lane and just not getting very good restarts. I knew it was going to get exciting with Kurt (Busch) and Joey (Logano). Those two are very, very aggressive; and of course Kurt got loose. That last restart was it. We had the car to win. Our car was amazing. But whoever got out in front had such a huge advantage. I got a good restart and Kevin (Harvick) for some reason, wasn’t getting good restarts, so Joey was sort of out there by himself and I was able to get to his quarter. When I got to his quarter, I dragged him back and I was able to shoot to the bottom and get by. But he made a heck of an effort. I thought he was going to get back by me; he almost did. And I just needed a couple of laps for my tires to come in and all of a sudden we were out front and setting sail and the checkered flag was waving. This is just unbelievably awesome. I’ve got to say hi to Ingrid and Ella and Leo back home. They couldn’t come today. But we’re celebrating your honor here and this is just amazing. This is fantastic.”

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS CAR AND THE RULES PACKAGE THAT IS PLAYING INTO YOUR HANDS THIS YEAR?
“It’s everything. It’s Hendrick Motorsports and the job that they do, collectively, with all of our teammates and the engineers. Everybody who is building the chassis and the bodies and the cars back at the shop; the engines are amazing. And then, I’ve got to give so much credit to Alan Gustafson and his crew. This guy is a great leader. I knew that he had this in him and he’s just been showing it by bringing great race cars every weekend. Today it was more than just a great race car, it took the whole team effort and making great calls and of course, I had a good restart again. That was fun. And these guys; they’re just awesome. Rick Hendrick is here and I love celebrating wins with him.”

TALK ABOUT THAT LAST RESTART AND HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO GET BY JOEY LOGANO
“I had a couple of different ones that didn’t go so well today. On that inside lane it was tough. Joey was so aggressive and good on the restarts. His car could really take off. But Kevin (Harvick) behind him was having a little bit of trouble on the restarts so he kind of got out there on his own and I got a really good start and I just got to his quarter just before we got to turn one, his left-rear. I was able to drag him back a little bit and when that happened it just gave me the momentum and allowed me to get ahead of him. I just didn’t lift. Went to the bottom, didn’t lift. I was on the inside of him on a previous restart and I kind of learned what not to do on that one. I knew my car was good enough, but even when we got out front with this car, Joey had a good run at us. His car was just turning so good at the beginning of a run that he got back to my bumper got me loose and I thought it was over at that point. Luckily I was able to stay on the outside of him and had a little push from Kevin (Harvick) that time to get by him.”

TAKE US THROUGH THAT MOVE
“He could just attack the entry of the corner. Those Penske cars all year long have been able to drive in the corner so deep and get the car to turn for whatever reason we seem to be better than them on the long runs. I knew getting out front was going to be a huge advantage. I tried to hedge toward the bottom. I knew that was the way it was going. I just had to lift early to keep the front-end cutting. When I did he got to me and it started loosening up the back end. I tried to stay in the gas as much as I could and keep as much momentum because I knew he was going to get inside of me and I was just hoping I could stay with him and I was able to. When I was able to stay on his quarter panel and when Kevin got behind me it just gave me a big shove and push into turn three. Those guys got side-by-side and at that point I knew it was over if we just could get to the checkered flag.”

IT’S BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE YOU WON HERE. IT’S ALSO BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE A CHAMPIONSHIP YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE DRIVE FOR FIVE NOW AS YOU HAVE WON A THIRD TIME THIS YEAR AS YOU ARE BACK IN THE POINTS LEAD?
“As I told you before the race started our Chase has already started. This team is championship caliber, but we have a lot of work to do. It’s going to be tough and we want to put ourselves in the mindset of right now we are in it. We don’t want anything to change and do anything different when we get to Chicago. Other than keep going and charging for those wins. That is what we did today. I’m just so proud. Thanks to all the fans. We had an awesome Michigan crowd here today. To win here in Michigan in the backyard of Chevrolet driving this car is always special.”

Jimmie Johnson claimed his 3rd win in the last 4 races with a victory at Michigan International Speedway. It was the 5th consecutive victory in NASCAR competition for Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Gordon finished 6th and remains the NASCAR points leader by 15 over Johnson.

Gordon started 2nd and fell in line behind polesitter Kevin Harvick on the opening lap. The first caution waved on lap 2 for Brian Vickers spin which collected Travis Kvapil. After the restart on lap 6, Gordon again fell in single file behind Harvick before a caution for Kyle Larson spinning off turn 2. On the next restart, Gordon dropped to 3rd as Aric Almirola followed Harvick. Gordon moved back to 2nd by passing Almirola on lap 13. He took the race lead from Harvick on lap 19 and pulled out to a comfortable lead. The first round of green flag pit stops came on lap 43. Harvick passed Gordon for the race lead on lap 57. A debris caution on lap 73 slowed the field and brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon opted for two tires and restarted in 4th place. He took 3rd from Harvick on lap 85 and passed Joey Logano to take the runner-up spot on lap 101.

The next caution waved on lap 103 for David Ragan’s spin. Gordon opted for four tires during the pit sequence and restarted in 13th place. He slipped to 14th prior to a caution for Alex Bowman’s wall contact on lap 110. One lap after the next restart, Brett Moffitt spun to bring out a caution. The seventh caution came on lap 123 when Denny Hamlin and Aric Almirola got together in turn 3. Gordon came to pit road for a 2-tire change and restarted in 15th place. He dropped to 19th shortly after the restart. A debris caution on lap 147 brought some of the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 5th place. He struggled on the inside line on the restart and dropped to 7th on lap 153.

Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 166. He opted for 2 tires and a track bar adjustment during the stop. He ran 7th when the field cycled through stops. Gordon took 6th from Dale Earnhardt Jr with 2 laps to go where he finished the race.

Turning point
After losing track position because of a 4-tire change at the halfway point, Gordon stayed out on lap 147 and got off sequence from most of the field. After a 2-tire stop on the final green flag stop, Gordon was able to post a solid top-10 finish.

JG’s comments
“The car was exceptional. In my opinion, that [car] belongs in Victory Lane. We lost some track position and when we lost track position we knew it wasn’t going to handle good. But we were just super loose even when we got clean air. So that probably hurt us more than anything. We just never could move forward. At the end, we came in and took 2 tires. And boom, the thing was gone and flying again. So, 6th not really indicative of the racecar or what I felt like we were capable of, but we’ll certainly take it.”

Jeff Gordon struggled with handling from the outset in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon finished a disappointing 17th and dropped to 14th in the NASCAR standings. He is 26 points behind 10th place — the final Chase cutoff. Gordon will likely need at least 1 win in the next 3 weeks to qualify for the 10-race playoff.

Gordon started 13th and ran 12th when the first caution waved at the end of the opening lap for Clint Bowyer’s spin. He advanced to 11th prior to a caution on lap 8 for David Reutimann’s wall contact. Gordon fell to 13th on the lap 12 restart as the field was slowed two laps later when Austin Dillon lost control and hit JJ Yeley. As the run progressed he slipped back two spots behind Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson on lap 37. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 41 and cycled through in 14th place. Gordon’s progress was hindered by loose handling issues in the corners. He took 13th from Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 65. A caution for Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact on lap 72 brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. Following a two-tire change, Gordon restarted in 14th place. He dropped to 17th within two laps of the restart, and feel back to 18th when Clint Bowyer passed on lap 85. Gordon gained two spots by lap 93 to run in 16th place. He moved to 15th prior to the next caution on lap 105.

Following a four-tire change, Gordon restarted 17th on lap 110. However, he struggled on the restart and dropped as low as 23rd on lap 113. He rallied back to 20th by lap 117 and took 19th from Trevor Bayne on lap 129. A caution for Dale Earnhardt Jr’s cut tire and subsequent wall contact slowed the field on lap 135. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 14th place. He quickly gained two spots and closed in on Kurt Busch for 11th on lap 143. However, Gordon lost ground on the inside line and settled into 12th place. The next caution waved on lap 149 for Bobby Labonte’s spin. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 10th on lap 153. He struggled on the restart and dropped out of the top-20 by lap 155. Kyle Busch’s spin on lap 156 brought out the caution and allowed Gordon to come to pit road for adjustments within the fuel window to make it to the finish. After a four-tire change, Gordon restarted in 26th place. His low water mark for the day came on lap 162 when he ran in 28th place — the last car on the lead lap. He regrouped to run 24th with 34 laps to go and re-entered the top-20 on lap 170. Another caution involving Kyle Busch slowed the field with 28 laps to go. He stayed on the track and restarted in 15th with 23 laps to go. He lost for spots and ran 19th with 20 to go. Gordon lost another spot and ran in 20th place with 13 laps to go. He gained a spot and moved to 19th place with 10 to go. He picked up two more spots in the closing stages to finish 17th. Gordon has not posted a top-15 finish in the last 3 races at Michigan.

Turning point
Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the day. He entered the top-10 just once, but was unable to hold the spot.

JG’s comments
“This team has a lot of fight in them and you can never give up. I think similar things last year caught us out into this position and I think similar things are going to get us into it like last year… We just can’t make mistakes. We’ve been making — me personally, and also as a team — too many mistakes. We have to eliminate those right now for the rest of the season if we’re not only going to be in (the Chase), but if we’re going to be any threat for the championship.”

Jeff Gordon’s arduous season took another downward turn with an early crash at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon was collected when Bobby Labonte spun in the early going. He fell to 16th in the series points standings.

Gordon started 29th and moved to 23rd by lap 5. However, he had nowhere to go when Labonte spun in turn 1 on lap 6. Gordon hit Labonte’s car and then bounced off the retaining wall. The #24 Chevrolet was too damaged to continue and garage repairs were needed. Gordon spent nearly 2 hours in the garage and returned after the halfway point to try and gain a few spots. He pulled behind the wall after moving up to 39th place. On the day, Gordon ran 52 laps — the fewest laps he’s run in a NASCAR race since Dover in June 2005.

Turning point
Friday. Poor qualifying effort put him deep in the field at the start of the race.

JG’s comments

“Bobby Labonte just lost it over there in Turn 2. He just did one of those slow spins where I couldn’t tell which direction he was going to go, so I had to guess and I guessed the wrong way. I didn’t really have anywhere to go. But I just can’t believe the way this season is going for us. It seems like we can run all day long when we can’t get the car right but when we finally get the car right, something like this happens. At Charlotte, I thought our car was awesome and I was really pleased with the way the car took off right there. We were really going to march up through the field. It’s unfortunate. This team just continues to have to face adversity and I appreciate how strong they are during it, but I just wish we didn’t all have to be tested quite this much.”

WOULD YOU SAY THE TRACK IS SURPRISINGLY SLICK?

“It’s not surprising because I expected it. When you have these fast practices in the mornings and then it loses a little grip in the next practice, you know when the sun comes out on race days it’s going to be pretty slick. So, I just wasn’t surprised.”

TELL US WHAT HAPPENED: “Bobby Labonte lost it off of turn two in front of me. It was just such a slow spin that I didn’t know which way he was going to go, so I had to guess. I tried to go around him on the outside and that was not the right way. I don’t know if I would have missed him even if I went to the inside. It’s unfortunate this season we are having is just unbelievable to me. We are at times struggling to get the speed then when we get the speed we struggle to finish because of stuff like this. I thought we were being tested last year, boy we are really being tested this year. Nobody has more fight in them than this team.”

HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE FRUSTRATION OF BEING INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT THIS EARLY IN A RACE?

“It’s not like we have any choice. You have to just deal with it and move on. You feel for the guys that are working so hard. There are some guys that are doing their job perfectly and things are out of their control and they don’t deserve this. There are other guys that, like myself, we contribute to being back there starting 29th. That is something we have to do better. I was really happy with the way the car was running. I’m happy with the way this team is sticking together, but boy I tell you these moments when they add up they really can be frustrating. That is the thing we have to work through the most. We are a great organization, a great team and we can rebound, it’s just we have to get the finishes.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LUCK?

“For years I’ve always said I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck that you make it. Just in that instance right there I call that being at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I also know that we contribute to where we started. We started back there and we were moving forward which I’m proud of, but the fact that we are back there. I put as much blame on myself. I really struggled this weekend when we went into qualifying trim. I’ve struggled all year. Shoot, the last two years with qualifying and I don’t know what it is, but we have to get it better. Starting back there you are only putting yourself into those positions to have those kinds of things happen.”

HOW MUCH IS THIS TESTING YOUR PATIENCE?

“I’m a pretty patient person, but it’s testing my frustration level and my confidence that is the biggest thing. We all know how big confidence is in this sport, any sport really. I don’t want to see the team get down and I don’t want to see myself get down. I have a lot of fight in me and so does this team. I’m looking forward to going to Sonoma.”

Jeff Gordon’s chances for the NASCAR Chase now come down to a victory at either Bristol, Atlanta, or Richmond — while a handful of other drivers remain on a single win in 2012. A valve spring problem relegated Gordon to a 28th place finish at Michigan Speedway. After 10 consecutive top-20 finishes from Charlotte in May to Pocono in August, Gordon has now posted back-to-back sub-20th place efforts.

Gordon started 9th and dropped to 13th by the end of the first lap. His slide continued as he fell to 16th on lap 5 while battling a loose handling condition. The first caution waved on lap 6 for David Gilliland’s spin. As the tire wore in, Gordon moved to 12th on lap 15. He entered the top-10 on lap 22 with a pass on Ryan Newman. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 36. He held the 10th position until Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 64. One lap later, the race leader Mark Martin was eliminated in a crash that started when Bobby Labonte spun off turn four. Both Martin and Kasey Kahne spun toward the infield, with Martin making hard contact with the pit wall. Gordon came to pit road in 9th and departed in 11th place after taking four tires. Gordon dropped to 15th before the next caution on lap 77 when Marcos Ambrose hit Regan Smith in turn 4. The next caution waved for Joey Logano’s wall contact on lap 89 with Gordon holding the 15th position.

Gordon came to pit road and restarted in 25th position. However, he dropped off the pace on lap 94 due to an engine issue. He pulled the #24 car into the garage on lap 98 with a valve spring problem. He returned to the race on lap 135 while running on 7 cylinders and finished 28th.

After two races and two test sessions at Michigan in 2012, Gordon’s best moment in the state this year might have been the meeting with Nena at the Jackson County Airport.

Turning point
Just before the halfway point, Gordon dropped off the pace with a valve spring problem. It was his first engine issue since the season-opening Daytona 500.

JG’s comments
“It was a valve spring, just running along there and all of a sudden dropped a cylinder. I was pretty sure that’s what it was. Of course the #14 had that same issue got our fingers crossed for all the other Hendrick engines out there. This is a tough place on engines. We rarely have these issues and it’s unfortunate to have this one here today. It’s the kind of year we have been having. I was hoping after Pocono we could carry some momentum and not have these kinds of back-to-back weekends, but that’s not the case. We go on to Bristol and fight hard there.”

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE ON THE MOTOR? “It’s something that when you come to Michigan and you turn these kinds of sustained rpm’s on this fast of a track, it’s always of concern here. And that bit us. We’ve been having a rough weekend. We’re not handling the way we were hoping to. Track position is so important that all we had to do was get track position and we still could have come out of here with a good finish and even won the race. There’s a lot of laps left and it’s unfortunate we don’t get to find out what we could do with it. It’s the kind of year we’ve been having. We’ll just go on to Bristol.”

IT SOUNDED LIKE YOU HAD SOME ISSUES WITH DALE EARNHARDT JR. EARLIER IN THE RACE
“WWell he took me four-wide and that wasn’t that big of a deal but then he slid up in front of me off of Turn 2 and I had to check up or I would have wrecked all of us. So, I just didn’t think that it was the smartest thing to do, especially as teammates. But, he chose to do it and that’s fine. It all worked out. I don’t care who I’m racing out there; I’m going to show my displeasure if I’m not happy about something. But that one was pretty close; but no big deal. I’m glad to see he’s running good. Those guys have really got their car dialed-in here at Michigan this year.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr snapped a four-year winless skid with a victory in the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan Speedway. Jeff Gordon posted a 6th place finish, which was the 400th top-10 finish of his NASCAR Cup series career. Gordon became the second youngest driver to achieve the milestone. It was Gordon’s fifth top-6 finish at Michigan in the last seven races there.

Gordon started 26th and slowed to avoid Kurt Busch’s spinning car on lap 2. He restarted in 30th place on lap 5. The second caution waved on lap 10 for Josh Wise’s engine with Gordon advancing to 25th. He ran 26th when the competition caution came on lap 25. Gordon came to pit road for tires and held the 26th spot. He moved up to 24th by lap 40 and ran 21st when the competition caution slowed the field on lap 50. Gordon opted for two tires and restarted 17th on lap 54. He moved up to the 14th position within 5 laps of the restart, and ran 13th on lap 70. Two laps later he took the 12th spot from Jimmie Johnson and entered the top-10 on lap 80. A debris caution on lap 81 brought pit stops with Gordon again opting for two tires. He restarted in 4th place on lap 84 and held the spot past the halfway point of the race.

Gordon stayed out to lead a lap during a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 119. He came to the pits for a four-tire change on lap 120. Kurt Busch’s spin on lap 121 brought out the caution with Gordon inheriting the top spot. He lost the lead in turn one to Dale Earnhardt Jr after the restart before the caution waved for Joey Logano’s spin on the backstretch, which collected Kasey Kahne. Another caution for Denny Hamlin’s spin on lap 133 slowed the field. The green flag waved on lap 140 with Gordon dropping to 3rd behind Earnhardt Jr and Tony Stewart. Greg Biffle passed Gordon on lap 159 as the DuPont Chevrolet battled loose handling issues. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 165 and cycled through in 6th place. As the laps wound down, Gordon was unable to make headway due to a blistered tire. He finished 6th and moved to 20th in the series points standings.

Turning point
Gordon battled for the race lead from lap 120-140, but battling handling issues in the closing stages. Blisters on the right side tires hindered his efforts to claim a top-5 finish.

Kyle Busch posted his fourth victory of the 2011 season with a victory in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan Speedway. Busch led 22 laps and held off Jimmie Johnson on a green/white/checkered restart to score the 23rd victory of his Cup series career.

Jeff Gordon started 9th but dropped positions right after the green flag waved. He regrouped to work back up to 9th by lap 10, and was running 6th at the first caution flag on lap 29. After the restart, Gordon moved into the top-5. At lap 52, Gordon took 3rd place and made in-roads on the Roush Racing leaders of Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth. After a caution flag for Bobby Labonte’s spin, Gordon lost position on the ensuing restart. He regrouped and took 5th from Kyle Busch on lap 62. However, overcast skies and wind impacted the handling on the DuPont Chevrolet. Busch re-took the spot from Gordon as he remained in the top-10. A caution at the halfway point brought the field to pit road.

After taking two tires, Gordon moved to 2nd place on lap 110. Three laps later, Gordon took the race lead from Matt Kenseth. He led for 11 laps before Kenseth re-took the lead when Gordon’s water temperature increased due to trash on the front of the car. Gordon ditched the debris by bump-drafting Kenseth and then regained the top spot. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 138. Gordon slipped to 2nd after the round of stops. Two laps later he fell to 3rd when Busch went by. As the tires came up to pressure, Gordon passed Busch and Kenseth to take the lead. Final pit stops came under caution with Gordon leaving pit road behind Matt Kenseth. He dropped to 5th on the restart with 25 laps to go while battling a tight handling condition. Mark Martin sent Gordon back to 6th with 12 laps to go. A caution for Kurt Busch’s wall contact set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon held on to post a 6th place finish — his third top-6 finish in the last four races.

Road ahead: The annual night race at Bristol Motor Speedway is next on the docket. Before that, Gordon is scheduled for a mid-week test session at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado.

Jeff Gordon was unable to capitalize on the momentum from last weekend’s victory at Pocono as he posted a less than satisfying 17th place finish at Michigan Speedway. Gordon appeared on his way to a 7th place finish, but a four tire change on the final stop dropped him to 15th for the restart. Gordon started 31st and gained 7 spots on the track by the time the first caution waved on lap 8. He entered the top-20 during the ensuing round of pit stops by opting for two tires. However, he faded to 27th while battling handling issues before a debris caution on lap 28. Following a pit stop, Gordon moved up to 23rd by lap 40. He slid back to 27th before a round of green flag pit stops on lap 62. The adjustments seemed to help as Gordon moved to 24th on lap 75. A caution for Brad Keselowski on lap 84 brought the field to pit road. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 22nd place. He re-entered the top-20 on lap 111. A well-timed caution flag with 40 laps to go allowed Gordon to restart in the 11th position. He took advantage of the track position by moving up to 8th with 34 to go. With 16 to go, Gordon moved to 7th with a backstretch pass on Ryan Newman. A caution with 9 to go for Dale Earnhardt Jr’s wall contact bunched the field for the restart. A four tire change resulted in Gordon restarting 15th with 5 laps to go. He was unable to make any headway in the closing laps and finished 17th.

Road ahead:  Gordon tested at the Mid Ohio sports car road course in preparation for Sonoma. He felt the test at Mid Ohio would be better suited for Sonoma, rather than a test at Virginia International or Road Atlanta. It’s been 5 years since Gordon won a road course race.
