March 22 – – Jeff Gordon’s day at Bristol Motor Speedway was an up and down affair characterized by handling issues in the mid-stages and a wreck with 150 laps to go.  Gordon’s unsatisfying 14th place finish leaves him 11th in points for the second straight week.  Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Tony Stewart with 7 laps to go and won his 50th career race.

Gordon qualified 5th, but started 3rd after Dave Blaney dropped to the rear of the field.  He settled into 4th after Jimmie Johnson used the high line to take the spot and eventually the race lead.  Gordon used the upper groove to take 3rd from polesitter Joey Logano on lap 8.  The first caution waved on lap 41 after Blaney stopped on the track.  The field came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 4th place.  He restarted in 6th after David Stremme and Brad Keselowski stayed out.  Gordon made quick work of Stremme on the outside line and got around Kurt Busch.  He took 2nd place from Keselowski on lap 49 and closed in on Johnson for the race lead.  The next caution waved for Clint Bowyer’s engine problem on lap 57.  Gordon held off Kurt Busch on the restart, but eventually ceded the runner-up spot on lap 81.  He fell to 6th by lap 115 while battling a tight handling condition.  A caution for Denny Hamlin’s wall contact on lap 117 brought the leaders to pit road.   Gordon departed in 5th place after gaining a spot.

Light rain enveloped the track on lap 125, which brought another caution period.  After nearly 20 minutes circling at reduced speed, the green flag waved.  Gordon dropped to 6th after Mark Martin passed on lap 150.  Keselowski went around Gordon on lap 164, and Jamie McMurray passed four laps later.  Gordon slipped to 10th on lap 170 after Martin Truex and Marcos Ambrose went by.  He fell out of the top-10 on lap 175 when Paul Menard moved around the DuPont Chevrolet.  The slide through the field continued as Gordon ran 17th on lap 195.   Gordon was back in 21st position when Kasey Kahne brought out a much needed caution on lap 205.  On the restart, Gordon moved from 21st to 17th by lap 220, and advanced to 14th on lap 230.  At the halfway point, Gordon had moved up to 12th as the tight handling condition he experienced earlier seems much improved.  Following a caution flag sequence for Kyle Busch’s cut tire, Gordon gained two positions on pit road.  With 200 laps to go, Gordon was running 9th behind Tony Stewart.  A caution for Regan Smith’s wall contact resulted in a caution flag.  Gordon left pit road in 10th place on lap 324.

On lap 341, Mark Martin slammed the wall off turn two after contact with Greg Biffle.  Martin then brought his car back into race traffic and made contact with the front of Gordon’s car, who was slammed in the rear by Marcos Ambrose.  Gordon elected to stay on the track running 11th due to rain in the area.  When the skies lightened, Gordon came to pit road for tires with 143 laps to go.  He restarted in 24th place before a caution flag for rain.  While the lead lap cars pitted, Gordon stayed on the track and moved to 2nd place.  The green flag waved with 90 to go and Gordon was unable to hold the inside line.  He dropped to 4th within a lap of the restart as Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson went by.  Less than 25 laps later, he slipped back to 10th place.  Gordon dropped out of the top-10 when Kyle Busch passed with to go.   He was running 14th when the caution waved for debris with 17 laps to go. He exited pit road in 16th for the final run to the finish.  Gordon moved up 2 spots to finish 14th.  At the front of the field, Johnson restarted 6th and moved to the lead around Tony Stewart with 7 laps to go.  Johnson pulled away to win his 50th career race and first ever at Bristol.

Bristol II In Car Audio

August 23 – – Jeff Gordon’s 23rd place finish in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway closed out an inconsistent summer stretch in which he has posted just two top-5 finishes in the last 7 races. At Bristol, Gordon worked his way up to 8th from his 33rd place starting position, but battled a loose handling — and damaged — car in the second half of the race. He went two laps down before gaining one back late in the event. At the front of the field, Kyle Busch held off Mark Martin for his fourth win of the season.

Gordon started 33rd and fell back to 35th within three laps. The first caution came on lap 11 for Joey Logano’s cut tire. Gordon came onto pit road for a four-tire change. He restarted in 32nd place on lap 16, and followed Michael Waltrip in traffic on the outside line to move to 28th place on lap 25. He eventually got around Waltrip and moved to 25th on lap 30. Gordon held the outside line but couldn’t move forward due to race traffic. The second caution waved on lap 64 when Denny Hamlin cut a tire. Gordon had advanced up to 24th position by running an extremely high line in the corners. Pit stops ensued with Gordon exiting in the 24th spot. On the restart, he held the high line and got a strong run up to 22nd. He entered the top-20 on lap 85 with a pass on Robby Gordon.

Gordon moved to 19th by lap 100, but began losing grip off the corners. He fell to 21st over the next 30 laps and needed a caution flag for more adjustments. He got the caution he needed on lap 135 after A.J. Allmendinger broke a brake rotor. Gordon came to pit road and had the benefit of an opening in front due to Regan Smith having been lapped. He restarted in 20th place on lap 141 and quickly gained three spots. He moved to 16th on lap 151. A caution for Bobby Labonte’s spin on lap 163 brought the caution. Gordon came to pit road for a tire change in an effort to fix a tight handling condition. He moved to 17th on lap 173, and took 14th on lap 177 due to the fresher tires. The high line was again preferred as Gordon moved to 12th on lap 187. Three laps later he passed Greg Biffle to move into the top-10. At the 200 lap mark, Gordon was up to 8th position.

Martin Truex took the 8th position from Gordon on lap 220. The caution waved on lap 255 for debris from John Andretti’s car. Gordon came to pit road in 9th place and departed in 12th. He briefly moved into the top-10 before dropping back to 13th on lap 280. Five laps later, he fell to 15th while he continued to battle loose handling issues. Dale Earnhardt Jr passed on lap 293 to put Gordon back in 17th. By lap 310, he fell to 21st, and was back in 25th on lap 319 as the leaders approached to put him a lap down. Jimmie Johnson passed on lap 330 to put Gordon one lap down. His problems were exacerbated as Brian Vickers was lapped, meaning that Gordon was not the first car one lap down. The caution waved on lap 356 after David Gilliland hit the wall. Vickers received the free pass to get back on the lead lap. Gordon restarted in 24th and battled to be the first car one lap down. However, he fell to 26th as the laps wound down. With 100 laps to go, he was mired in traffic in 26th place and had no chance for the free pass. Gordon went two laps down on lap 406. He got one of the laps back by staying out under a brief caution for a passing rain cloud.

Martin Truex’s cut tire brought the caution with 20 laps to go. Jeff Burton received the free pass just ahead of Gordon. The restart with 15 laps remaining saw Kyle Busch pull ahead of Mark Martin. With 9 laps left, Michael Waltrip’s wreck brought the caution, but David Stremme was ahead of Gordon to get the free pass. At that point, Gordon’s fate for the night was sealed with a 23rd place effort.

March 23 – – Another week and another solid race for Jeff Gordon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the long-awaited victory he had been looking for, but instead a 4th place finish in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon struggled with a tight handling car on longer runs, which made contending for the victory a near impossibility. Nevertheless, he scored his fourth top-10 finish of the season and extended his points lead. The race was dominated by Kyle Busch who led more than 350 of the 500 laps en route to his second win of the season

Jeff to Start 10th at Bristol

March 21, 2009 by admin 647Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F03%2F21%2Fjeff-to-start-10th-at-bristol%2FJeff+to+Start+10th+at+Bristol2009-03-21+15%3A32%3A28adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D647

March 20 – – Jeff Gordon turned in his best qualifying performance in nearly a month, but it was only good enough for the 10th starting position in Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. With the tight confines of pit road at Bristol, Gordon will need a little luck — not to mention a fast car– to stay up front on the 1/2-mile track. Recent races at the track have been a far cry from the slugfests they used to be due in part to the variable banking in the corners that allow drivers on the high side to maintain momentum.
