September 12 – – The Joe Gibbs Racing team served notice to Jimmie Johnson that his march to a fifth consecutive title might have a roadblock. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch battled for the victory at Richmond International Raceway before Hamlin came away with his series-leading 6th victory of the season.

For Jeff Gordon, it was a frustrating night where he was never a factor for the race lead. Gordon started 22nd battled handling issues at the outset. He dropped to 25th by lap 30. David Reuttiman’s spin on lap 54 off of Kurt Busch’s front bumper brought the caution flag. The lead lap cars came to pit road with Gordon opting for chassis adjustments. Gordon restarted in 28th and quickly moved up to 27th around Dale Earnhardt Jr. Two laps later he moved into the 25th position. At the 100 lap mark, Gordon had advanced to 21st place, but was complaining about the handling of the car. On lap 141, race leader Denny Hamlin put Gordon a lap down. Three laps later the caution waved after Terry Labonte made contact with the wall after cutting a tire.

Gordon came to pit road and restarted 18th. He was in position for the free pass if a caution came out, but was passed for position by Regan Smith on lap 160. Gordon re-took the spot from Smith 10 laps later. On lap 226, light rain began falling to bring out the caution. Gordon was awarded the free pass and got back on the lead lap. With 73 laps to go, Gordon came in for a perfunctory pit stop. He made a late race charge up to 14th, but the laps wound down too quickly. Gordon took 13th from Matt Kenseth with 21 laps to go, and passed Jeff Burton for 12th two laps later.

Gordon enters the Chase in 8th in the series standings — 60 points behind Hamlin.

May 2 – – The scene was all too familiar to Jeff Gordon fans. Their driver was leading the race in the closing stages — and pulling away. However, a late race caution flag at Richmond International Raceway wiped out Gordon’s lead in the Crown Royal 400, and he eventually lost the top spot with just five laps remaining.

Gordon started 4th and passed Jimmie Johnson for the 3rd position on lap 2. Three laps later he took the runner-up spot from David Reutimann. He held the second position until the first caution on lap 45 for Joe Nemechek’s cut tire. The field came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 4th place after swinging wide to exit his stall because of Denny Hamlin directly in front. On the restart, Gordon moved to the outside line and took 3rd from Jamie McMurray. He took 2nd from Kevin Harvick on lap 62 but ran distantly behind race leader Kyle Busch on the long green flag run. Gordon inherited the lead when Busch came to pit road on lap 143. Two laps later, Gordon came to pit road for tires and gave up the top spot. When the stops cycled through, Busch remained as the leader with Gordon in 2nd place. A debris caution on lap 154 brought the leaders back to pit road with just 9 cars on the lead lap. Gordon exited in 3rd place after a four-tire change.

On the restart, Gordon immediately took the 2nd position from Clint Bowyer on lap 162. Debris on the backstretch necessitated a caution flag on lap 171. Pit stops followed and Gordon exited in 3rd behind Ryan Newman who took two tires, and Busch. On the restart, Gordon dove low to pass Newman and ran side by side with Busch for the race lead. Busch held the top spot, and Jeff Burton took the 2nd position from Gordon on lap 180. Gordon passed Busch for 2nd on lap 240 and closed to less than 1.5 seconds behind Burton for the race lead. On lap 250, Gordon got a run off turn four and took the lead from Burton. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 268 and held the lead through the cycle. Gordon continued to lead the race and came to pit road for a green flag pit stop with 37 laps to go. The complexion of the race changed with 34 laps to go when Elliott Sadler cut a tire and spun on the frontstretch.

Gordon stayed out and started on the inside with 23 laps to go. He pulled away to the lead, but David Ragan’s spin with 21 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon led the field to the restart with 15 to go, and hauled the mail into turn one to get the lead. With 11 to go, Sam Hornish destroyed his car on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon and Kyle Busch came to the restart with 5 laps to go. Busch took the lead on the outside line and Gordon washed up the track in turn three battling Kevin Harvick for the runner-up spot. Busch pulled away to win his first race of the season. With the runner-up finish, Gordon moved from 10th to 6th in the series points standings.

September 13 – – Jeff Gordon will enter the chase for the championship trailing Mark Martin by 30 points.  Gordon didn’t score the victory in the Chevy 400 at Richmond International Raceway, but he led laps and ran with the leader nearly all night before late race contact hindered his efforts.

Gordon started 7th and passed Brian Vickers for 6th on the second lap. Scott Speed’s spin on lap 5 brought out the caution, with the leaders opting to stay on the track.  On the restart, Gordon battled side-by-side with Kasey Kahne before taking the 5th position.  Gordon moved to the inside of Jimmie 58320916Johnson and took 4th on lap 16.  His forward march continued with a pass on Martin Truex for 3rd on lap 24.  The second caution came on lap 45 when Tony Stewart spun coming off turn four and collected Reed Sorensen.  Gordon came to pit road for tires and departed in 2nd place, as he benefited from an opening in front due to John Andretti having been lapped.

Gordon took the lead from Hamlin on lap 67 with an inside pass entering turn one.  He held the lead through a caution period on lap 107, but battled a tight handling condition in traffic.  Hamlin re-assumed the top spot on lap 150, but relinquished the lead to Gordon during pit stops on lap 180.  The duo swapped the lead three times over the next 15 laps, with Hamlin taking the lead on lap 195.  Hamlin led lap 200 — the halfway lap — but Gordon came back to take the lead on lap 203.  Regan Smith’s blown tire on lap 204 brought out the caution.  Hamlin won the race off pit road to re-take the lead, which he held thru caution flag pit stops on lap 281.  Jeff Burton’s cut tire with 80 laps to go slowed the field and resulted in pit stops.

On the restart with 74 laps to go, Gordon was tapped by Clint Bowyer — who made an ill-advised run into the corner and locked up his tires — exiting turn two.  Gordon was forced up the track and dropped back to 6th before the caution waved one lap later.  Brian Vickers took 6th from Gordon with 65 laps to go as his hopes for a victory all but evaporated.  He passed Kyle Busch with 58 to go to move back into the 6th position.  Brad Keselowski’s blown engine with 20 laps to go brought the leaders to pit road for the last time.  Gordon exited in 4th for the restart with 14 laps to go.  He pulled to the inside of Mark Martin with 9 laps to go and moved up to 3rd place.  However, he was distantly behind race winner Denny Hamlin and runner-up Kurt Busch.

In the final chase spot, Brian Vickers edged Kyle Busch by four points to qualify for the 12th and final transfer spot. Martin will have the points lead heading to Loudon, New Hampshire for the first chase race next weekend.

Post Race Comments

“We were fighting hard for the 10 bonus points. It was a great effort, we had a great car.  This was the best one I’ve had (at Richmond) in a long time.  We know we have some points to make up, but I think this team is ready to do that. I don’t like giving up points to anybody.  You don’t want to allow anyone to have an edge.  We know we’re going to have to go out and win some races.”

May 2 – – Jeff Gordon knew he didn’t have the car to compete with Kyle Busch for the victory at Richmond International Raceway. Crew chief Steve Letarte gambled by keeping Gordon on the track during a late caution period to allow him to inherit the lead– focusing solely on a victory. However, a series of caution flags allowed Busch to close in and eventually pass Gordon for the lead with 50 laps to go. Older tires hindered Gordon’s efforts and he faded to 8th place at the finish. Nevertheless, he re-assumed the series points lead after losing the top spot at Talladega.

May 1 – – Jeff Gordon expects a battle in Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway where he’ll start on the outside of the front row. But his opponent might not be another competitor; rather, it might be himself. He has complained of back pain over the past few months and expects to fight through pain in the race. “This will be a tough weekend because of the g-forces and the braking that you use here and the long runs that you have here,” Gordon said. Gordon underwent an MRI earlier in the week and has a better picture on his back problems. “I’ve got some information that I’m just not ready to release yet or admit to,” Gordon said. “When I know how I’m going to treat it, I’ll let you know. I don’t believe it’s anything serious.”
