May 31, 2009 by admin 1440Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F05%2F31%2Fjeff-to-compete-in-prelude-to-the-dream-pay-per-view%2FJeff+to+Compete+in+%22Prelude+to+the+Dream%22+Pay-per-View2009-06-01+03%3A37%3A18adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1440

On Wednesday, June 3, the Field of Dreams that is Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio will once again play host to the Prelude to the Dream. The all-star dirt Late Model race featuring 25 world renowned drivers as they battle for dirt supremacy will be presented live to the entire nation on HBO Pay-Per-View, with proceeds from the telecast going to support four military-themed charities:

Wounded Warrior Project: www.WoundedWarriorProject.org
Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund: www.FallenHeroesFund.org
Operation Homefront: www.OperationHomefront.net
Fisher House: www.FisherHouse.org

The fifth annual event will feature such racing icons as Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and more. All will pilot 2,300-pound dirt Late Model stock cars capable of putting out over 800 horsepower.prelude_blast_jeffg

The live, commercial-free broadcast will begin at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT), with an immediate replay and subsequent replays throughout the week and the following weekend. HBO Pay-Per-View’s racing telecast has a suggested retail price of .95 and is available to more than 71 million pay-per-view homes. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming in the pay-per-view industry. Ordering information and up-to-the minute racing information is available at www.hbo.com.

“The Prelude to the Dream just keeps getting bigger every year,” said Stewart, a multi-time racing champion and proud owner of Eldora Speedway. “Since HBO Pay-Per-View began televising the Prelude in 2007, we’ve been able to help a lot of deserving charities, specifically Victory Junction Gang Camp.

“But in light of what’s going on in our world today – with our troops engaged in combat in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places around the world – we felt it was time to do something for those who came back from serving their country with severe injuries, and for those families whose loved ones never made it back.”

The four charities – Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Operation Homefront and Fisher House – all cater to severely injured military personnel or fallen heroes and their families.

The four previous Prelude to the Dreams have collectively raised more than million. With each year’s event gaining significant stature and mainstream interest, Stewart’s goal is to have the fifth annual Prelude to the Dream raise , million, with the proceeds impacting the four charities.

“It’s an ambitious goal, especially in this economy” admits Stewart. “But if we don’t shoot for a number that is a true difference-maker, we’re not ever going to reach it. That’s our goal, and me and everybody else associated with this event is going to do everything we can to meet that goal. Now, we just need everyone out there to purchase the event, enjoy all the action going on at Eldora, and support our heroes who are protecting our freedom.”

In addition to the aforementioned drivers joining Stewart in this year’s Prelude to the Dream, Brian Vickers, Robby Gordon, David Reutimann, Bill Elliott, Dave Blaney, Aric Almirola, Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Ron Capps, Cruz Pedregon, Ray Evernham, Joey Logano, Jeremy Mayfield and David Stremme have also committed.

Drivers from all types of disciplines, some with lots of dirt track experience and others with hardly any, will participate in hot laps, qualifying, heat races and the 30-lap feature on the half-mile clay oval, all of which will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

“We are always thrilled to bring this unique and compelling race at Eldora to fans across the country,” said Tammy Ross, vice president, HBO Pay-Per-View & Sports. “Seeing the top drivers in the world going all-out to benefit our courageous armed services men and women who have been injured delivers a sense of privilege and inspiration to everyone involved in presenting the event.”

With no points and no pressure, the Prelude to the Dream is a throwback race, allowing drivers to step back in time and compete for the reasons they all went racing in the first place – pride and a trophy. And they’ll do it on the same surface that racing legends A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti competed on nearly 50 years ago.

Other interesting storylines include:

More Than 20 Driving Titles Represented at the Prelude: A total of 22 major championships have been won by drivers in the Prelude to the Dream: Sprint Cup [11] – Elliott (1988), J. Gordon (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001), Stewart (2002, 2005), Kenseth (2003), Johnson (2006, 2007, 2008); IROC [3] – Harvick (2002), Kenseth (2004), Stewart (2006); Nationwide Series [5] – Harvick (2001, 2006), Vickers (2003), Edwards (2007), Bowyer (2008); IndyCar Series [1] – Stewart (1997); NHRA Funny Car [2] – Pedregon (1992, 2008).

Dirt Veterans vs. Dirt Neophydirt-cartes: Stewart, Gordon, Kahne, Newman, Blaney, Bowyer, Elliott, Schrader and Wallace grew up on dirt tracks, while Vickers, Busch, Harvick, Almirola, Hamlin and Logano spent the majority of their racing upbringing on asphalt.

What Happens When a Drag Racer has to Turn the Steering Wheel?: Capps is a 13-year veteran of the NHRA and Pedregon is a 15-year NHRA driver, where straight-line runs over 300 mph are commonplace. They’ll have to turn right to go left as they sling their dirt Late Models around Eldora.

For those who want to see the Prelude to the Dream in person, tickets are available online at www.EldoraSpeedway.com or by calling the track office (937) 338-3815.

Act fast – the race has sold out in each of its four previous years.

Snapshots of each charity supported by this year’s Prelude are as follows:

Wounded Warrior Project (www.WoundedWarriorProject.org): Mission – To raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.

Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (www.FallenHeroesFund.org): Mission – To support severely wounded military personnel and veterans, ensuring that those who sacrifice for our nation receive the best care possible. These efforts are funded entirely with donations from the public, and hundreds of thousands of individuals have contributed to the Fund.

Operation Homefront (www.OperationHomefront.net): Mission – Provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home.

Fisher House (www.FisherHouse.org): Mission – To provide “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 40 Fisher Houses located on 18 military installations and 10 VA medical centers. Three more are under construction.

May 31 – – Give Jimmie Johnson a challenge and he’ll rise up to meet it. Although he dominated the 400-lap race at Dover International Speedway, a pit road miscue put the three-time champion back in 8th position for the restart with less than 30 laps to go. He systematically worked through the lead lap cars — and lapped traffic — to regain the race lead with less than 5 laps to go. It was Johnson’s 42nd career victory. For his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon, it was a rather forgettable afternoon. Gordon finished two laps down in 26th position.

Jeff Gordon’s weekend at Dover International Speedway was essentially ruined before the green flag even flew. A wreck during his qualifying lap destroyed his primary race car and forced him to start at the rear of the field. The combination of a poor starting spot and an uncomfortable setup resulted in Gordon turning in his worst racing performance of the 2009 season.

Gordon started 42nd and gained five spots in the first five laps. By lap 11, he had moved to 31st as his march forward continued. A competition caution slowed the field on lap 31 with Gordon up to the 28th position. He gained two spots on pit road and restarted in 26th. A caution for Tony Raines’ brought several leaders to pit road. Gordon moved up to 14th position for the restart on lap 50. However, on older tires he faded to 16th within five laps. His fade continued as he slipped to 21st by lap 70. Gordon dropped a position to Kevin Harvick and ran in 22nd place at the 100-lap mark.

Gordon came onto pit road under green on lap 117 just before the caution waved for debris. While the right side tires were being changed, crew chief Steve Letarte immediately called for two tires to try to keep Gordon on the lead lap. However, the strategy failed as he was scored a lap down in 28th place. At the halfway point, Gordon dropped to 30th and was on the verge of going two laps down. Race leader Jimmie Johnson passed Gordon on lap 216 to put his teammate out of contention for the day. He moved up to 26th as the laps wound down, but was hindered by the laps down status.

Gordon lost the series points lead to Tony Stewart. He has posted just one top-5 finish in 6 races since winning at Texas Motor Speedway in early-April.

May 30 – – Jeff Gordon will start at the rear of the field at the start of Sunday’s 400-mile race at Dover International Speedway after slamming the turn two wall during his qualifying lap. He flattened the right side of the DuPont Chevrolet, thus requiring a back-up car for Sunday’s race. “I got down into turn one and when I got back in the gas it felt pretty good but it started to get loose a little bit there off of turn two,” Gordon said. “I tried to correct it and it just shot it straight in the wall. It was a hard hit, destroyed the car. I’m glad I’m alright.”

May 26 – – The rain-shortned Coca-Cola 600 at Lowes Motor Speedway was not the exiciting Memorial Day weekend event that many had hoped. Jeff Gordon battled through a tight handling condition early in the race that only covered 227 of the 400 scheduled race laps. He nearly fell off the lead lap before lap 100. However, a chassis adjustment brought the DuPont Chevrolet to life and Gordon was turning laps as fast as the leaders before rain brought the proceedings to a halt. Gordon was credited with a 14th place finish and holds onto the series points lead.

Crashed For Cash: Jeff Gordon’s Strong All-Star Performance Falls Short

May 17, 2009 by admin 1366Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F05%2F17%2Fcrashed-for-cash-jeff-gordons-strong-all-star-performance-falls-short%2FCrashed+For+Cash%3A+Jeff+Gordon%27s+Strong+All-Star+Performance+Falls+Short2009-05-17+15%3A53%3A05adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1366

allstarrace-crash-header

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon is known by many monikers, including “Wonderboy,” “The Kid,” and “The Rainbow Warrior.”

Known to drop the hammer when there’s cash on the line, Gordon earned the nickname as “The Money Man” by FOX Sports/Speed TV announcer Darrell Waltrip for the 37-year old’s five $1 million victories in his prolific career.

Once again in this year’s 25th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the Vallejo, CA, native pressed hard for another rich payday after finishing in the top-five in the previous three segments of the event.

Winning the third segment, the driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet started in the “pole” position for the final 10 lap shootout, propelling his Hendrick entry into a comfortable lead.

However, Gordon’s lead was short-lived, when the caution flag flew due to teammate Jimmie Johnson’s spin which bunched up the field for another double-file restart.

With the caution flag laps not counting in the race, Gordon’s lead meant that the bulls-eye was on his No. 24 car-NASCAR’s version of a sitting duck.

Relinquishing the lead to a hard charging Kyle Busch, Gordon did not back off from the battle for the lead and win, pushing his DuPont Chevrolet back into contention for the $1 million payout.

Despite the reputation that Lowe’s Motor Speedway gets for being a spacious track with ample passing room, the front stretch did not have enough room for the top-three drivers.

Gordon found himself going three-wide on the inside line with Busch and Ryan Newman battling along side, with each driver refusing to give up any inch of real estate for that coveted lead spot.

If this situation was occurring in next Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, chances are that Gordon, Newman, or Busch would have backed off the throttle to give each driver some racing room to avoid what would result in sheet metal mayhem.

Well, this is the All-Star Race, where points don’t count and only the winner gets remembered after the contest. Usually.

Unfortunately for the case of Gordon, he will remember the 2009 edition of this race as the one that got away for he and his No. 24 team.

Refusing to give up his position on the track, Gordon found himself going for a wild spin across the front-stretch grass, sliding through that portion of the track until coming to a halting crash into the SAFER barrier just after the dog-leg before Turn One.

“It’s the All-Star race,” Gordon said per AP article by Jenna Fryer following the hard-fought battle for the race lead. “That’s just a bunch of guys racing really, really hard. I heard three-wide at the last second.”

While the result for this year’s race meant some cash and a battered DuPont machine that will most likely not see any track action in the immediate future, Gordon and company can be consoled by the fact that their performance tonight was reminiscent of his dominant days of the past.

When’s the last time you remember Gordon actually going for the win in the All-Star Race, much less at LMS?

In my preview article documenting the factors heading into this event, I made a comment on how the three-time event winner has not exactly contended for the lead or engaged in a spirited battle for the win in this race.

While Gordon’s gamble proved futile and costly, the performance that he delivered in front of the racefans was nothing short of magnificent.

Finishing among the top-five in the three segments, including his third segment win, Gordon looked like the champion of the past who pushed his cars to the limit.

With the Coca-Cola 600 next on the racing schedule for the Cup series, we may have not seen the best from the No. 24 team.

Defeated and out from the All-Star Race, won by satellite “teammate” Tony Stewart, look for the 600 to have a retro feel with the current points leader right there for the win next Sunday.
