July 27 – – Jimmie Johnson hung around long enough and was in the right spot at the right time to claim the win. That’s been a similar refrain over the last four years in the NASCAR world. Johnson scored back-to-back victories in the Brickyard 400 at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a late pass on Mark Martin. The victory was his third win at the Brickyard, and 43rd of his career.
Jeff Gordon battled through race traffic but was unable to make significant headway due to several long green flag runs. Gordon started 22nd and dropped a few spots in the opening laps. He hooked up in a draft behind Kevin Harvick and moved up to 21st on lap 8. He cracked the top-20 on lap 11 and settled into the 20th position. Gordon moved up to the 15th spot following green flag pit stops on lap 37. A caution for Kyle Busch’s cut tire and subsequent contact with the wall on lap 57 brought the field to pit road. Gordon exited the pits in 13th place, having benefited from a stall opening in front of him due to Joe Nemechek dropping out of the race in the opening laps.
Gordon used the inside line to his advantage on the restart and moved into 11th position on lap 65. He entered the top-10 on lap 67 and ran in 10th until the next round of pit stops on lap 91. Gordon moved to 8th with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr. on lap 100. However, he gave the spot back to Earnhardt Jr. during the final round of green flag pit stops with 35 laps to go. He trailed his Hendrick Motorsports teammate for just two laps as the engine expired on the #88 Chevrolet on lap 128. Gordon restarted in 8th position with 26 laps to go.
As Gordon faded on the restart, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Johnson took the lead from Martin with a power move on the outside entering turn one. Gordon fell to 10th before passing Matt Kenseth with 22 laps to go to re-assume the 9th spot.

July 14, 2009 – Steve Letarte, crew chief for the No. 24 Dupont/ National Guard Chevrolet driven by Jeff Gordon, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race after Saturday night’s Lifelock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.
The team started the race with a stout car, taking the green flag on the inside of row four. Letarte kept his driver running up front most of the night by making adjustments to improve a tight racecar. He remained calm when a Lap 138 tangle between Gordon and Carl Edwards caused both cars to lose significant track position.
But a Lap 247 caution gave Letarte an opportunity to get the No. 24 back to the front. With just 20 laps to go, he called his driver to pit road for four fresh tires in hopes to give him an advantage over the top eight teams who chose to stay out. The call paid off, and Gordon was able to pass cars at ease on his way to a second place finish.
“The caution came out at the right time for Steve Letarte to make an excellent call to come and get four tires, and the whole pit crew just did a fantastic job getting us off pit road,” Gordon said after the race. “I’m proud of Steve Letarte and all the guys on this team by making some great pit stops and just sticking with it.”

July 12 – – Jeff Gordon posted a solid runner-up finish at Chicagoland Speedway after a late rally from handling problems. Gordon battled a tight handling condition at the outset and struggled getting off the corners virtually the entire race. He fell out of the top-10, but rallied back through pit stops to crack the top-10 with 50 laps to go. Gordon moved up to 8th with 25 laps to go and closed in on Kurt Busch for a position before the final caution with 21 laps remaining. Gordon was the first car to come onto pit road. Contact between Busch and Jimmie Johnson forced Gordon onto the track apron with 15 laps to go where he got around both drivers to take 4th place. With 13 to go, he dove low on the backstretch to take 3rd from Kasey Kahne. Three laps later, he took the runner-up spot from Denny Hamlin.
A caution for Kyle Busch’s spin brought out the caution with 6 laps to go. Gordon restarted on the inside of his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin with 2 laps to go. Martin took off on the restart and Gordon slipped behind Kahne. He grouped to take 2nd from Kahne on the final lap, but was distantly behind Martin at the finish. Martin and Gordon collected $1 million from the race’s title sponsor for the 1-2 finish, since the pair finished 1-2 in the Michigan race sponsored by the same company in June.
Gordon is scheduled to be a presenter at the annual ESPN awards on Wednesday night.

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT IMPALA SS — Finished 2nd:
GOOD CALL BY YOUR CREW CHIEF TO GET YOU SOME TIRES, WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE AT THE END? “Well we had our struggles. We had a good car, we were just a little too tight there at the beginning and we were making adjustments. Carl Edwards and I got racing really hard and he got loose underneath me and we about wrecked so we had a long battle from that point on. It was an incredible call that (crew chief) Steve Letarte made and the whole pit crew just did a fantastic job getting us off pit road. It was four tires then it was just a battle maneuvering through traffic with cars slipping and sliding all over the place. That last restart Mark (Martin) went a little early and I just spun the tires when I tried to get it going. It’s still a great finish, one-two for Hendrick. Got to thank the Patriot Academy and DuPont. It’s a privilege having them on board. We could certainly use a night like this and that’s important in the Chase. We’re running really strong and showing them what we’re made of on these tracks.”

CHICAGO — NASCAR announced Thursday an agreement to rebrand the former Jeff Gordon Racing School into the NASCAR Racing Experience. The multi-year licensing agreement brings an authentic racing experience to NASCAR fans, its sponsors and business partners at race tracks throughout the country.
The NASCAR Racing Experience provides a menu of racing programs from a ride-along as a front-seat passenger to the full racing experience which puts fans behind the wheel of an authentic race car. The program will use current Sprint Cup Series race cars for all of its programs.
“We have provided more than 200,000 driving experiences to race fans and business partners since 1998,” said Robert J. Lutz, president and CEO of NASCAR Racing Experience. “This new step in becoming an officially licensed NASCAR property further enhances the program to allow it to expand our reach.”
“The Jeff Gordon Racing School provided an unequaled opportunity for fans to sit in the driver seat and — for a moment — become a race car driver,” said Sprint Cup driver and four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon. “This move to become the NASCAR Racing Experience is a good step to expand the program throughout NASCAR working with more teams and tracks.”
The NASCAR Racing Experience currently has 28 Sprint Cup race cars, 40 professional instructors and is headquartered in Concord, N.C. NRE offers realistic racing action that includes timed racing sessions, no lead-follow and Personal Racing Instructors that provide constant feedback to each customer through an exclusive in-car radio communication system. Prices for ride-alongs start at $129 and the driving programs begin at $429.
“The thrill of riding in or driving a real NASCAR Sprint Cup car is an experience of a lifetime,” said Blake Davidson, NASCAR managing director of licensed products. “This program allows fans, corporations and our business partners to get first-hand knowledge of what its like to race at speeds upwards of 170 mph around the same tracks as the biggest stars of NASCAR. No other sport provides to its fans the chance to experience the realism of competition like a racing experience using authentic race cars on a NASCAR track.”
The NASCAR Racing Experience will begin operating at 12 Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series tracks across the country before expanding to additional tracks in 2010. Current locations include: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, Richmond International Raceway, Talladega Superspeedway and Texas Motor Speedway.

July 10 – – Jeff Gordon will start 7th in Saturday night’s Lifelock 400 buoyed by his success with the National Guard paint scheme. In four previous races with the National Guard colors, Gordon has posted four top-five finishes, including his lone victory of the season at Texas Motor Speedway. On Saturday night, his car will feature the National Guard Patriot Academy. Crew chief Steve Letarte has chosen chassis No. 24-484 for the race. Gordon used this chassis for the All-Star Race in May (wrecked while going for the lead) and also for Bristol (4th place) in March. Gordon is scheduled to be a presenter at the annual ESPN awards next week.
