All Star Race In-Car Audio

May 22, 2011 by admin 3980Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F05%2F22%2Fall-star-race-in-car-audio-2%2FAll+Star+Race+In-Car+Audio2011-05-22+15%3A55%3A13adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3980

A restart miscue preceding a pit road mistake doomed Jeff Gordon’s chances in the All Star race. Gordon started 12th and moved to 9th on lap 20 after the field became strung out around the track. The field pitted on lap 25 with Gordon holding 9th place through the sequence. He dropped back to 10th on lap 38 when Matt Kenseth passed, but re-took 9th with a pass on Mark Martin on lap 43. During the break, Gordon pitted for four tires. In the second segment, Gordon moved to 7th in the opening laps and took 6th when Kasey Kahne wrecked in turn 1. Gordon moved into the top-5 toward the end of the second segment. He restarted in 3rd to begin the third segment. On the opening lap, Gordon took 2nd from Carl Edwards. Regan Smith’s spin slowed the field and Gordon restarted on the outside of Kyle Busch. Gordon got a poor restart and dropped to 6th where he finished the segment. A break to work on the cars preceded a four-tire pit stop. Gordon came off pit road in 15th position for the restart after a slow pit stop. He ran the final 10 lap segment relatively conservatively and finished the event in 15th. Gordon hasn’t posted a top-10 finish in the All-Star race since 2006.

Road ahead: The event was held under the same conditions as the second half of the Coca-Cola 600 on May 28, thus providing an ideal window for a test session. Gordon’s team has struggled on the 1.5-mile tracks in 2011, but the performance at the All-Star event shows they may have turned the corner toward improvement.

A late two-tire change didn’t work out for the DuPont team and Jeff Gordon posted a 17th place finish at Dover Internatonal Speedway. Rain washed out qualifying and Gordon started in 21st place. He moved to 17th by the first caution on lap 20. He came to pit road for two tires during the caution flag period and restarted in 23rd. At the competition caution on lap 40, Gordon had moved up to 16th. A four-tire change put him back in 24th for the restart, but he gained two spots by lap 50. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 110 and cycled through in 19th place. He moved up to 17th on the long green flag run on lap 155. A caution flag for light rain on lap 163 allowed Gordon to make up distance as he was about 3 seconds in front of the leader. With open pit stalls in front and behind, Gordon exited pit road in 15th position. He ran 13th at the halfway point. A debris caution on lap 215 brought the field to pit road. Gordon exited in 9th place — the first time he cracked the top-10 during the race. However, he struggled on the restart and slipped to 12th within five laps. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 281 during a green flag pit stop sequence, but ran 12th when the field cycled through on lap 292. A caution for Kasey Kahne with 70 to go brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon exited in 11th place. He dropped to 12th before a caution for Juan Pablo Montoya’s spin with 40 laps to go. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires and exiting 4th. He restarted 5th after Mark Martin stayed on the track. On the restart, he fell back immediately on the inside line and ran 10th on lap 367. He fell further through the field and finished the race in 17th place. Gordon has just one top-10 finish in the last 5 races.

Road ahead: The All-Star race precedes the Coca-Cola 600 — both at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Gordon has struggled on the 1.5-mile tracks thus far in 2011 with less than stellar efforts at Las Vegas and Texas. The All-Star race provides an opportunity for an extended test session under the lights. Of course, a fourth victory in the All-Star event would be the ultimate prize heading into NASCAR’s longest race on Memorial Day weekend.

Jeff Gordon started 5th and moved to 4th within one lap due to the inside line. He moved to 3rd on lap 11 by taking the high line around Denny Hamlin. He held the position through a caution flag and pit stop sequence on lap 35. Tony Stewart took 3rd from Gordon on lap 56 as the #24 car slipped back. A caution flag brought the leaders to pit road with Gordon departing in 6th place after opting for four tires. After slipping back on the restart, Gordon narrowly missed the spinning car of Jimmie Johnson in turn 1 on lap 84. He restarted in 6th on lap 89, but battled handling issues after lap 100. He fell to 10th on lap 125 when Martin Truex went by. Gordon moved back to 7th and ran there until the halfway point of the event. Following a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 180. Gordon ran in 8th place. He took 7th from Jamie McMurray on lap 185. A caution for Johnson’s second spin of the night brought the caution on lap 225. Gordon re-entered the top-5 by exiting pit road in 5th place. With 120 laps to go, Gordon moved up to the 3rd spot. He lost a spot on pit road under caution and restarted 4th with 83 laps to go. He brushed the wall with 50 laps to go and dropped to 5th before a round of green flag pit stops. Following the stops he dropped back and ran 8th with 20 laps to go. A caution with 10 to go brought the field to pit road. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted 10th. Wrecks involving Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick moved Gordon up to 9th for the green/white/checkered restart. He slipped back to 14th before rallying on the final lap to finish 12th.

Road ahead: The series heads to the 1-mile Dover International Speedway. Gordon hasn’t won at Dover since 2001, but tested at the track in late April as part of the Goodyear tire test.

Richmond In-Car Audio

May 1, 2011 by admin 3932Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F05%2F01%2Frichmond-in-car-audio-2%2FRichmond+In-Car+Audio2011-05-01+21%3A55%3A38adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3932

Jeff Gordon started 6th and was hooked up from the ouset as he moved to 3rd on lap 10. However, Gordon battled a loose handling condition going into the corner and was unable to make headway toward the lead. He dropped to 4th at the 70-lap mark and fell to 5th when Kyle Busch passed. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 89 and cycled through in 9th place. At the first caution flag on lap 104, Gordon was up to 6th. Gordon’s handling improved after a pit stop and he took 3rd from Clint Bowyer on lap 120. Shortly before the halfway point, Kurt Busch’s wall contact brought a caution to slow the field. Gordon came to pit road and exited in 3rd behind Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin. On the restart he moved to 2nd behind Busch. Gordon briefly took the race lead for 3 laps before Busch re-assumed the top spot on lap 205. A caution on lap 236 brought Gordon to pit road for a track bar adjustment. He lost positions battling a loose car and returned to pit road 15 laps later when Jimmie Johnson wrecked Joey Logano. With 100 laps to go, Gordon ran in 5th before a caution for Brad Keselowski’s spin. After pitting, Gordon restarted 12th and was the victim of a wreck on the backstretch when Matt Kenseth got turned. Gordon spun across the track and slammed the inside wall on the backstretch. He climbed from the damaged car under his power and was credited with a 39th place finish — his worst finish since Michigan in August 2008.

Road ahead: The series heads to the 1.36-mile Darlington Raceway for a Saturday night affair. Gordon’s performance on intermediate tracks has been an uphill climb in 2011. However, Darlington is far from the typical intermediate track with its narrow and abrasive racing groove.

JG’s comments

WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE?

“It knocked the wind out of me. I just saw the corner through my mirror, a car come into my left rear, and around I went in a hurry. I was hoping that I spun quick enough that I wasn’t going to spin to the inside wall. And then I hit really, really hard. I’m just so proud of these guys on the DuPont Chevrolet. We had an awesome race car tonight. I don’t know if we had a car capable of winning, but we were certainly going to give it a heck of a try and we certainly had a top-five car pretty easy. So, I hate it with the pit sequence and the pit strategy that was going on there that we lost all that track position. With 100 (laps) to go and everyone was just getting so impatient; you had to dive in there three-wide. I don’t know what happened behind me but somebody shot up and got my left rear and around we went. I must have hit the corner of that inside wall. Again, I wish they had a Safer barrier there. I seem to be able to find the ones without the Safer barrier. But what a shame, man.”

YOU SAID EVERYONE WAS LOSING THEIR PATIENCE OUT THERE INCLUDING YOU, IS THERE A LOT OF BEATING AND BANGING GOING ON OUT THERE?

“Well, there is 100 to go. I think it is a little early, but any time you have cars that stay out, cars that take two, cars that take four, they are going to be diving in there taking it three wide. I was having to do it to. I’m sure not blaming anybody else. Just kind of the circumstances when we’re like that. I just think that we got the bad end of it.”

YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO FIND THE SPOT WHERE THERE IS NO SAFER BARRIER

“I know. I don’t know what it is. I’m not trying to teach anybody anything. I really am not. I think it is pretty well known we need safer barriers everywhere. You think it is a short track and everything but man, I hit a ton and hit right on the corner where you don’t want to hit. It definitely got my attention. That is for sure. It rang my bell.”

Talladega In-Car Audio

April 17, 2011 by admin 3912Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F04%2F17%2Ftalladega-in-car-audio-2%2FTalladega+In-Car+Audio2011-04-17+22%3A18%3A10adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3912

Jeff Gordon started from the pole and hooked up in a tight draft with Mark Martin. The duo moved ahead of the field and Gordon led the first 9 laps. The pair was overtaken by Denny Hamlin on lap 10. Gordon and Martin dropped to 32nd and 33rd after making a swap among themselves. They worked their way up to 27th before Landon Cassill hit Brian Vickers on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag on lap 28. Gordon came to pit road out of sequence with Martin and restarted near the rear of the field. Gordon and Martin ran in 25th/26th for most of the next 50 laps. A multi-car wreck in turn three on lap 90 eliminated Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, David Ragan, and Trevor Bayne. Gordon and Martin ran together in 25th before a debris caution with 60 laps to go. Gordon and Martin ran well behind the next incident with 49 laps to go when Kyle Busch spun and collected Matt Kenseth. The pair moved up to 15th/16th with 35 laps to go. Gordon restarted 21st with 20 to go. With 15 laps to go, Martin pushed Gordon up to the top-5. After Ryan Newman’s spin slowed the field, Gordon restarted 3rd with Martin in 5th with 11 laps to go. On the final lap, Martin pushed Gordon to the lead on the backstretch, but Clint Bowyer edged ahead on the upper groove. Gordon implored Martin to protect the bottom of the track, but his teammate was unable to do so. As they exited turn four, the combination of Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr moved to the low line and edged ahead of Gordon and Bowyer at the finish line. Gordon posted his third top-5 finish of the season with the 3rd place effort.

Road ahead: After an off-weekend for Easter, the series will head to the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway. Gordon’s pre-season test notes from Pikes Peak — as well as the Phoenix victory — should bode well for the Richmond chassis set-up.

Texas In-Car Audio

April 10, 2011 by admin 3900Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F04%2F10%2Ftexas-in-car-audio-3%2FTexas+In-Car+Audio2011-04-10+16%3A16%3A08adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3900

After starting 32nd, Jeff Gordon took two tires on the first pit stop on lap 9 to gain 8 positions. He restarted 24th but fell back to 29th within four laps. A caution on lap 45 allowed the DuPont team to make chassis adjustments. Gordon was unable to make significant headway and additional adjustments came under caution on lap 113. As the night sky enveloped the track, Gordon moved to 22nd on lap 160. However, he went a lap down less than 20 laps later as the handling woes continued. A caution on lap 208 allowed Gordon to get back on the lead lap by staying on the track. He lost the lap during a long green flag run, and went another lap down on lap 226. He made the lap up trying to stretch the fuel to the end of the event, but ran out on the backstretch of the final lap. Gordon finished a difficult night in Texas in the 22nd position.

Road ahead: The series heads to Talladega Superspeedway — which should resemble the Daytona 500 with two-car drafting partners hooking up for extended periods of time. Gordon qualified on the outside of the front row at Daytona. His restrictor plate program for Talladega should be strong. However, plate racing often comes down to drafting partners and avoiding the multi-car melee(s).

Martinsville In-Car Audio – Spring 2011

April 3, 2011 by admin 3879Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F04%2F03%2Fmartinsville-in-car-audio-spring-2011%2FMartinsville+In-Car+Audio+-+Spring+20112011-04-03+22%3A15%3A09adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3879

April 4 – Jeff Gordon’s car looked solid at the outset and he moved from 21st to 13th in the opening 50 laps. However, he failed to make headway over the next 50 laps and ran 12th on lap 100. He moved into the top-10 on lap 145, and lined up 7th for a restart on lap 179. He made his way around Kyle Busch and entered the top-5 on lap 200. Gordon took the runner-up spot from Juan Pablo Montoya just before a major wreck on lap 221 involving Martin Truex and Kasey Kahne. The race was red flagged while track clean-up ensued. When the green flag waved, Gordon took the lead from Clint Bowyer on lap 253. However, Bowyer re-assumed the top spot from Gordon just three laps later. Gordon fell to 5th place before he was able to get back to the inside line. He dropped further back to 8th while battling a loose handling condition. Gordon steadily made his way back to the front and took over 2nd place by lap 310. With 135 laps to go, Gordon eased ahead of Kyle Busch for the race lead. However, Busch passed Gordon for the lead with 108 laps to go. Gordon was caught on pit road during a late race caution and restarted 9th with 29 laps to go. He made up four spots and posted his 12th top-5 finish in the last 13 races at Martinsville. Gordon gained four spots in the standings and is now 12th in the points race.

Road ahead: The series heads to Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night. After a disappointing effort at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in early March (similar 1.5-mile track), Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson will look to ride the momentum of a good effort at Martinsville.

JG’s comments:
“We did have a great day with our Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet. Don’t forget to text Hunger to 50555 and help us out. I was real proud of Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and all the guys on this team today. We weren’t great at the beginning. We just worked our way up there slowly, took our time and were patient. Then we had a race car that could run with these guys and we got there and took the lead. That one time I got real lose. I don’t know it just seemed like the track changed on us there at the end and that caution did not help us any either so that got us behind. I thought it was an awesome day for us to drive up there to fifth at the end.”

TOP FIVE FINISH AND YOU LED A LOT OF LAPS, PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE HOW YOUR RUN WAS TODAY?
“You know, it was really good. These tires were tricky today and getting track position was tough but we were really patient with the car at the beginning of the race and then it started coming to us and I thought that Alan and the guys in the pits just did an excellent job and we got ourselves out front, we just couldn’t seem to stay there when it counted most and Kyle was really, really strong on that one run and we couldn’t hold him back and we just tried to hang with him but when that caution came out when we pitted so that caught us out so we had to make up our track position at the end so it was a great top-five finish for us.”

Rewind: Starting deep in the field, Jeff Gordon powered up to 15th in the first 150 miles. Gordon noted improvements in the car after each pit stop. However, he was unable to make headway beyond 12th place and dropped to 17th by the halfway point. With 50 to go, Gordon fell to 20th and was struggling to stay on the lead lap. Crew chief Alan Gustafson had led Mark Martin to three straight top-6 finishes at the track, and Gordon was strong in both races in 2010. The duo seemed to hit on a setup that worked during practice on Saturday while posting the 5th fastest speed, but faltered during the main event on Sunday. Gordon struggled with track grip nearly all day and finished 18th. At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jimmie Johnson coming off turn four on the final lap to take the victory.

Road ahead: The ugly stats are that Gordon has just one top-10 finish in his last 8 races, and just two top-5 finishes in the last 22 events. However, Martinsville comes at the right time for Gordon. After a victory at Phoenix, Gordon has struggled over the last 3 races. Gordon posted 15 consecutive top-10 finishes at Martinsville before Kurt Busch’s front bumper snapped that streak last fall.

Jeff Gordon started off loose, but the car eventually tightened up as the opening run progressed. He ran 11th when the competition caution waved on lap 50. He ran 13th-15th over the next 100 laps battling a tight handling car in the center of the corners before a caution for Robby Gordon’s wall contact. At the halfway point, Gordon was running in 11th place — but the handling seemed to be improving as he turned the fastest laps just before a caution for Bobby Labonte’s spin. However, chassis adjustments proved to be his underdoing as he dropped to 15th and was in danger of going a lap down. A debris caution on lap 344 allowed Gordon to come to pit road for adjustments. He failed to make in-roads toward the top-10 over the last 150 laps and finished 14th. He remained 19th in the series standings, but would qualify for the Chase (if that became an issue in March!) due to his win at Phoenix.

Road ahead: Gordon has just one top-10 finish in his last 7 races, and just two top-5 finishes in the last 21 events. The series heads to the 2-mile speedway in Fontana, California, for Sunday’s race. Crew chief Alan Gustafson led Mark Martin to three straight top-6 finishes there. Jeff Gordon had solid efforts there in 2010, but an engine issue and a pit road penalty hindered his finishing position.

JG’s comments

TALK ABOUT YOUR DAY:

“It was more down than up, I think. We had one run where the car was just unbelievable on the long run and we had a long run and I don’t know how far we drove up there but I drove by a bunch of cars and I was pretty optimistic at that point. And I was still a little bit tight, which is what we’d been fighting in the center of the corner; and we freed it up and was so loose I couldn’t drive it after that. And we just went back and forth and back and forth. We salvaged a 14th place finish out of it, which you can’t complain too much about that. It was definitely not our day so we were frustrated at times and fighting hard but I felt like we worked well together as a team to get through kind of a rough day and come out here with a decent finish.”

HOW DID THE TIRE TREAT YOU?

“Well, it doesn’t have a lot of grip but we didn’t have any tire problems, or the #24 team didn’t have any tire problems. I don’t know if anybody else did. I know Goodyear’s intentions were good to try to get the drivers’ more grip, which is what we like to have. That’s what that first tire had. But we’ve got to have one that puts rubber down on the track too. This seemed like a good fix.”

YOU’RE NOT VERY HAPPY WITH BRAD KESELOWSKI. WHAT HAPPENED?

“The guy was three laps down. I understand. He’s trying to keep from going a lap down and hey, you’ve got to give him credit. They fought back and got back on the lead lap and got a decent finish out of it. I’ll just tell Brad that the next time I’m three laps down, and he’s on the lead lap, just expect the same out of me, you know? I don’t expect him to just let off. He had a fast race car. But when you’re three laps down and then you door-slam the guy trying to pass; that’s what ticked me off is when he got loose underneath me and got up into me, I got pretty mad then.”

Forbes ranks Jeff Gordon #2 in driver earnings in 2010

March 6, 2011 by admin 3833Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F03%2F06%2Fforbes-ranks-jeff-gordon-2-in-driver-earnings-in-2010%2FForbes+ranks+Jeff+Gordon+%232+in+driver+earnings+in+20102011-03-07+00%3A57%3A42adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D3833

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was once again the center of attention in the Nascar universe last week. He won the pole for the Daytona 500 before a wreck during practice pushed him to the back of the pack to start the race. It was the 10th anniversary of his father’s death, which occurred in a crash on the final lap of Daytona. A moment of silence was planned for lap three of this year’s race as spectators held three fingers in the air for the late driver of the No. 3 Chevrolet.

On race day Junior ran near the front of the pack and was in the top five with only laps to go before a blown tire ruined his chances, sinking him to 24th place. It marked the 94th straight race for Earnhardt without a trip to victory lane. Despite his lowly finish, Earnhardt was the most mentioned driver on the Fox telecast with 91 mentions, compared to 86 for winner Trevor Bayne, according to Joyce Julius & Associates.

Such is life for Nascar’s most popular driver eight years running and the scion of the seven-time Sprint Cup champ known as the Intimidator. Despite his lack of success in recent years on the track, Dale Earnhardt Jr. remains Nascar’s highest-paid driver, earning $29 million in 2010.

Earnhardt moved to Hendrick Motorsports for the 2008 season with great expectations. Despite partnering with Nascar’s richest team, Earnhardt has only one win to show for his three years in the No. 88 car. He remains Nascar’s highest-paid driver thanks to merchandise sales that are the best in the sport and reportedly account for one-third of all Nascar licensed merchandise sales.

Other income streams include an eight-figure annual salary from Hendrick and a 50% share of his $4.9 million in winnings and bonuses in 2010 from Sprint Cup races. Earnhardt also has a bevy of personal endorsements, including Chevrolet, Nationwide and Wrangler.

Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon follows Earnhardt in the Nascar money standings with earnings of $25 million last year. DuPont, which has sponsored Gordon’s car for 18 years, cut back its commitment this year to 14 races, but the AARP Foundation picked up 22 races to promote its Drive to End Hunger campaign. Gordon partner Pepsi will be the primary sponsor for two races for the No. 24 car. Gordon has racked up $117 million in race winnings during his career.

It is a clean sweep for Hendrick at the top with five-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, the third-highest-paid driver at $24 million. In its collecting of high-priced talent, Hendrick is like the New York Yankees of Nascar. 2010 is the third year in a row that the team has boasted the three highest-paid drivers in the sport. Furthermore, Kasey Kahne, No. 8 on our highest-paid list, will join the squad next year, replacing 52-year old Mark Martin in the No. 5 car.

Johnson signed a six-year contract extension with Hendrick at the end of 2009 that puts his driver’s salary on par with Gordon and Earnhardt. Johnson can’t match his teammates personal endorsements yet, but his profile has been raised with his on-track success and last year’s 24/7 Jimmie Johnson, a four-part HBO documentary.

Johnson counts Lowe’s and Gatorade as personal sponsors, and more deals are likely to follow this year. His dominating performance is starting to resonate with Nascar fans as his merchandise outsold every other driver save Earnhardt’s last year. Johnson raked in $13.4 million in winnings and bonuses last year, but that money is shared with the owners of the No. 48 car, who include Hendrick and Gordon.

While salaries at the top appear stable, the next tier of drivers might be headed for a haircut as primary sponsorship deals continue to get done at lower rates across Nascar. “As drivers get into renegotiations, salaries will be impacted and could be down 20% to 25%,” says Zak Brown, chief executive of Just Marketing International, a motor sports marketing company in Zionsville, Ind. As of now eight Sprint Cup drivers will be free agents after this year.
