Rewind: Starting deep in the field, Jeff Gordon powered up to 15th in the first 150 miles. Gordon noted improvements in the car after each pit stop. However, he was unable to make headway beyond 12th place and dropped to 17th by the halfway point. With 50 to go, Gordon fell to 20th and was struggling to stay on the lead lap. Crew chief Alan Gustafson had led Mark Martin to three straight top-6 finishes at the track, and Gordon was strong in both races in 2010. The duo seemed to hit on a setup that worked during practice on Saturday while posting the 5th fastest speed, but faltered during the main event on Sunday. Gordon struggled with track grip nearly all day and finished 18th. At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jimmie Johnson coming off turn four on the final lap to take the victory.
Road ahead: The ugly stats are that Gordon has just one top-10 finish in his last 8 races, and just two top-5 finishes in the last 22 events. However, Martinsville comes at the right time for Gordon. After a victory at Phoenix, Gordon has struggled over the last 3 races. Gordon posted 15 consecutive top-10 finishes at Martinsville before Kurt Busch’s front bumper snapped that streak last fall.

October 11 – - There was a point in the Pepsi Max 400 where Jeff Gordon’s fledgling championship hopes were on fumes. The driver had received a pit road speeding penalty with less than 50 laps to go and was mired back in traffic. A late race caution flag coupled with a determined driver helped salvage a 9th place finish. Although Gordon dropped to 85 points behind Jimmie Johnson, his fortunes were better than they would have been if the race had been green to the finish.
Gordon started 17th and picked up two positions on the opening lap. He continued slicing through traffic and moved into the top-10 on lap 5. He passed Mark Martin for 9th place on lap 7. On lap 10, he passed Greg Biffle and Juan Pablo Montoya to take over 7th place. Gordon moved into the top-5 on lap 15 by getting around Kasey Kahne. However, debris on the grilled forced him to let Clint Bowyer go by so he could tuck in behind to get the debris off. He moved back into the top-5 on lap 35 after getting around Elliott Sadler. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 38. He ran in 4th after stops cycled through the field. The first caution waved on lap 40 for Greg Biffle’s blown engine.
Gordon restarted 4th and took the lead from Matt Kenseth off turn four. However, Jimmie Johnson powered past one lap later. On lap 49, he dropped to 5th after running up the track in turn four. He took 4th from Kenseth on lap 53 before the second caution for Marcos Ambrose’s cut tire. The lead lap cars came to pit road with Gordon holding 4th place. He moved to 3rd after the restart. One lap later, the caution waved for Carl Edwards stopping on the track. Gordon took the runner-up spot from Kyle Busch on lap 65, but dropped to 3rd on lap 68 when Mark Martin went by. Green flag pit stops cycled through the field on lap 97 with Gordon running 3rd. On lap 104, Gordon ducked low and took 2nd from Johnson. A debris caution on lap 113 allowed Gordon to erase Martin’s 5-second lead. Gordon’s crew sent him back onto the track with the lead.
Gordon chose the outside line for the restart on lap 118. He paced the field until Bowyer took the lead on lap 125. One lap later Mark Martin passed Gordon for position. On lap 130, Tony Stewart took 3rd from Gordon as he battled loose handling issues. Denny Hamlin sent Gordon back to 5th with 65 laps to go. A caution for Ambrose’s spin with 64 to go brought the leaders to pit road and allowed Gordon’s team to make chassis adjustments. Gordon gained two spots on pit road and restarted 2nd with 60 to go. The inside line hindered Gordon as he dropped to 4th behind Stewart, Bowyer, and Ryan Newman. With 50 to go, Martin and Kasey Kahne passed Gordon sending him back to 6th. Gordon faded to 8th with 46 to go before a caution for Kyle Busch’s blown engine. The leaders came to pit road with Gordon departing in 11th place. However, he received a penalty for speeding entering pit road and restarted at the tail end of the lead lap. “I’m sorry about that guys, I knew I was on the edge but I didn’t think I’d be over,” Gordon radioed to his crew.
He restarted in 30th with 41 to go and began making his way through traffic. With 39 to go, he ran in 25th. A debris caution with 18 laps to go brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon restarted in 25th and gained 10 spots in 10 laps to run 15th. With 7 laps to go, David Ragan and Kurt Busch wrecked on the frontstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon ran in 13th place at the caution flag. Gordon opted to come to pit road for two tires. Gordon restarted 12th for the green/white/checkered finish. He passed three cars and finished 9th. At the front of the field, Stewart held off Bowyer and Johnson to take the victory. Gordon moved to 4th in the standings, but trails Johnson by 85 points.

February 22 – - The In-N-Out fast food chain is one of the most popular stops for the NASCAR teams on visits to Southern California. Unfortunately for Jeff Gordon, In-N-Out described his engine in the last 75 laps of the Auto Club 500 in Fontana, California. Gordon was running 4th when his engine began missing. He wound up finishing 20th in a race won by his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson.
Gordon started 28th and worked his way into the top-20 within four laps. He steadily worked through traffic and ran 16th on lap 11. Gordon took 12th from Jamie McMurray on lap 21, and entered the top-10 on lap 30 with a pass on Mark Martin. Two laps later he climbed to 8th. Gordon came to pit road on lap 39 for a green flag stop. When stops cycled through, Gordon ran 6th on lap 44, but slipped to 8th just three laps later while battling a loose condition. A debris caution on lap 59 brought the field to pit road. Gordon opted for four tires and departed in 5th place.
Gordon dropped back to 10th on the restart after getting squeezed on the inside line. After the field became strung out he regrouped and took 8th from Greg Biffle on lap 65. However, a back and forth battle with Biffle moved Gordon up the track and back to 10th. Gordon came back and passed Biffle for 9th on lap 68, before Biffle returned the favor one lap later. Gordon patiently moved around traffic and ran 7th on lap 80. He used the high line in the corner to take 6th from Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 86. Kasey Kahne’s spin on lap 93 brought the caution and the leaders came to pit road. Gordon exited pit road in 4th place, but once again lost spots on the inside line and ran 11th at lap 100. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 9th place – distantly behind leaders Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson.
A caution for Montoya’s engine brought the caution and the field to pit road on lap 139. However, Gordon stayed on the track and collected a 5 point bonus for leading. On the restart, Gordon chose the outside line and maintained the top spot until Ryan Newman blew an engine on lap 147. He lost the lead on the restart as Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch went by on lap 154. With 90 laps to go, Johnson went around Gordon to take 3rd place. Gordon battled back and took 3rd from Johnson with 88 to go. Trouble began with 75 laps to go when Gordon radioed about an engine problem. He slowed dramatically and came to pit road with 72 laps go with the oil temperature rising. The caution waved for rain with 70 to go and Gordon moved up to 4th due to drivers coming to pit road for fuel. The field ran under caution for nearly 20 minutes before the green flag waved with 50 laps to go.
The engine once again produced problems and Gordon faded back in traffic until the engine picked up again. With 35 laps to go, Gordon dropped back to 21st position as the engine was down a cylinder. One lap later, Gordon came to pit road for tires. Crew chief Steve Letarte speculated it was likely a spark plug problem with the car. Gordon restarted in 25th place with 20 to go. He moved around slower cars and up to 18th with 11 laps to go, before dropping two spots on lap 241. Gordon finished the event in 20th. The last time Gordon started a season with two sub-15th place finishes was 1996.

October 12 – - Jimmie Johnson led the most laps en route to the victory in the Pepsi 500 at California Speedway. It was Johnson’s 45th career win and gives him the points lead in the Chase for the first time. Jeff Gordon finished 2nd after briefly challenging Johnson for the lead during several late-race restarts. Gordon moved up to 5th in points, but still trails Johnson by more than 100.
Gordon started 10th and used the outside line to his advantage on the opening lap to move up to 8th. By lap 8, he gained two more spots and ran in 6th place. Gordon moved into the top-5 on lap 21 with a pass on Greg Biffle coming off turn four. He brushed the wall on lap 30, before coming in for a green flag pit stop 10 laps later.
Gordon ran 4th when the pit stop sequence cycled through. However, he lost the position to Denny Hamlin before the 50-lap mark. As the run progressed, Gordon re-assumed the 4th spot from Hamlin. The first caution came at lap 65 for Jamie McMurray’s cut tire. Gordon came onto pit road in 4th held the position. He dropped back on the restart before rallying back to 3rd on lap 75. Two laps later, Jimmie Johnson passed to send Gordon back to 4th. On lap 79, he dropped to 5th, and slipped to 6th after Kevin Harvick went by on lap 81. A caution for Ryan Newman’s cut tire brought the field to pit road on lap 84. Gordon lost two spots on pit road and departed in 8th position.
He worked through race traffic and moved back into the top-5 on lap 90. At the 100-lap mark, he passed Mark Martin to take back the 4th position. A debris caution on lap 117 brought the leaders to pit road, where Gordon moved up two spots. He restarted in 2nd place on lap 121 alongside Denny Hamlin. He fell to 3rd as Johnson passed within two laps of the restart. Gordon dropped to 4th on lap 130 as Juan Pablo Montoya went by. He took 3rd from Hamlin on lap 145. Gordon stayed out during a pit sequence to lead a lap — the first lap he led in the Chase. However, after the pit stop he slipped back to 4th while voicing his displeasure with the tires on the car. A debris caution on lap 183 brought the leaders to pit road, where Gordon made a mistake and slid through the pit box — thus slowing the time. He departed pit road in 6th place.
On the restart, Montoya and Hamlin made contact with Hamlin hitting the inside wall and sending him to the garage. Gordon moved to 4th with 54 laps to go, but ran distantly behind Johnson and Montoya. Gordon took 3rd from Martin on lap 215, before pitting under green with 25 laps to go. Gordon ran 2nd to Johnson after the pit stop sequence cycled through. A debris caution with 15 laps to go slowed the field and set up a restart with Johnson and Gordon alongside each other. Gordon started on the inside and took the lead on the backstretch. Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne spun on the frontstretch, bringing out the caution with 11 laps to go. The restart came with 7 laps to go with Gordon on the outside. Johnson took the lead from his teammate coming off turn four before a wreck in turn 1 collected six cars, including Jeff Burton, AJ Allmendinger, Marcos Ambrose, Reed Sorensen, Kasey Kahne, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The final restart came with 3 laps to go with Johnson pulling away from Gordon for his 45th career victory. Gordon’s 2nd place effort was his 8th runner-up finish of the season.

Jeff Gordon’s winless drought will continue at least for another week, but his runner-up finish to Matt Kenseth in the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway showed that his race team has made significant strides on the downforce tracks over the off-season. “We certainly are going to win if we put cars out there like this,” Gordon said. “We still have a little bit of work to do but I’m excited because we ran so good. We made an adjustment that made my car just a little too tight at the end.” Gordon started 6th, ran in the top-three virtually all night, and led significant portions of the mid-late stages of the race. However, he was beaten off pit road by Kenseth with 35 laps to go. Gordon had called for a handling adjustment that made the car too tight on the final run. Although he closed in on Kenseth as the laps wound down, he was unable to get around the leader. Nevertheless, the runner-up finish thrusts him up to 2nd in the series standings and gives the team something to build on heading to Las Vegas next weekend.
