As is the case with racing at Talladega Superspeedway, one mistake by another driver can end a promising day in seconds. Jeff Gordon was taken out of contention on lap 136 when Brad Keselowski spun into his line. Gordon posted a 39th place finish — his worst finish since Michigan in June 2013.

Gordon started 11th and stayed on the inside line in the opening stages. He ran behind Danica Patrick and drafted with her into the top-5. On lap 8, Gordon moved to the middle and led the event with a drafting push from Carl Edwards. The first caution waved on lap 14 when Brad Keselowski made contact with Patrick and spun entering turn 1. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and restarted in 3rd place. However, Gordon was caught in the middle lane and dropped to 11th by lap 23. Ten laps later he worked his way back into the top-5 on the outside line. By lap 50, he ran in 8th place prior to a debris caution. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for four tires. Problems on the pit road dropped Gordon to 22nd in the running order for the restart. He moved up to 12th by lap 58 as he locked into a draft behind Trevor Bayne. Gordon re-entered the top-10 on lap 60. However, as is normally the case at Talladega, Gordon slipped to 15th in a drafting line by lap 65.

On lap 75, Gordon dropped back in the draft to 33rd place. He fell to 39th on lap 78 as he stayed behind the lead pack. He stayed in the rear of the field and ran 40th on lap 85. A round of green flag pit stops came on lap 96 with Gordon opting for two tires. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran in 18th place in the draft. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 105. Gordon restarted 32nd after getting boxed in his pit stall. He remained in the rear of the field after the restart and was content to log laps at the tail end of the draft. On lap 130, Gordon locked into a draft behind Paul Menard and moved into the top-20. On lap 136, Gordon was caught up in a melee coming out of turn 4 when Keselowski triggered a multi-car crash. The #24 car sustained heavy damage on the front and right side.

Gordon brought the damaged car to pit road for repairs before heading to the garage. He returned to the event and finished in 39th place, which snapped his streak of 11 consecutive top-15 finishes. Gordon remains the NASCAR points leader by 3 points over Matt Kenseth.

Turning point
Gordon started moving from the rear with 60 laps to go, which put him in prime territory when Brad Keselowski spun up the track into his line.

JG’s comments
“Oh man, we had a great car. The car always looks really good. This car was super-fast. (watching replay). Yeah, that is not the best angle and that’s what I saw. I could see where the 2 came from the outside lane and came back down to the inside lane, or middle lane, then wiggled and got turned. I would like to see a different angle to see what turned him. Not exactly sure why he was driving the way he was driving to begin with but obviously he was trying to get his lap back and felt that was the way to do it. It was unfortunate what happened to him early, but more unfortunate what happened to many of us in that incident.”

DID YOU FEEL IT WAS AGGRESSIVE EARLY BY ANYBODY?
“Danica (Patrick) made a mistake early. I don’t think that was an aggressive move I think it was just a mistake that got the No. 2 (Brad Keselowski) turned (earlier in the race). She just misjudged him. Other than that I saw a fairly respectable race going on out there. We were battling up toward the front and everything was great. Our car was really good. Once we got shuffled to the outside lane and feel back it wasn’t worth it to me, we went to the back. We just felt like we were getting closer and closer to needing to get our way further to the front to get ready for that next pit stop. From that pit stop on it is on. You have to go for it. We got caught up in the wreck at that time.”

WHAT DID YOU SEE IN THAT ACCIDENT?
“Not much I just saw the No. 2 (Brad Keselowski) get turned. I had seen him for several laps driving over his head being pretty aggressive I guess trying to get his lap back. I knew he was laps down, but he wasn’t doing anybody any favors, nor himself. Then ultimately that was a wreck. I would like to see the video to know exactly what happened. Somebody might not have given him an inch there, but he was certainly taking probably more than he should have been in the situation he was in. I’m disappointed myself that we have all talked that we needed to get further to the front for that next pit stop. I don’t know if I had of waited a couple of more laps we might not have been in that one. We were making our way up there so I was pretty happy the progress we were making. Of course all it takes is one little incident like that and then you are in it.”

Jeff-Gordon-Talladega-2013 (4)
Day became night at Talladega Superspeedway as the Aaron’s 499 finished more than 7 hours after it began due to a lengthy rain delay. David Ragan and David Gilliland posted a 1-2 finish for Front Row Motorsports after a green/white/checkered restart where they drafted past Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards at the front of the field. Jeff Gordon was involved in two separate incidents and came home with a hard fought 11th place effort.

Gordon started 9th in the Imron Elite Chevrolet and dropped out of the top-20 by lap 5 on the inside line. As is the nature of racing at Talladega, Gordon drafted back into the top-10 by lap 11. He moved to the outside line and drafted with Casey Mears up to 7th place. By lap 18, Gordon led the outside line and moved into the top-5. He ran 4th when the first caution waved on lap 21 for Trevor Bayne’s engine. Gordon came to pit road for a 2-tire change and restarted in 3rd place. He fell to 8th by lap 40. Three laps later, he sustained front end damage as he was caught in the middle of a multi-car wreck in turn 1. Kasey Kahne was turned into the wall and Gordon hit the front of Greg Biffle’s car in the ensuing melee that collected more than 10 cars.

Following repairs to the front fenders on pit road, Gordon restarted in 32nd on lap 52. He ran at the rear of the field while battling a toe-in problem. He drafted with Landon Cassill as the pair ran nearly a half minute behind the leaders. Gordon stayed out to lead during a cycle of green flag pit stops. The lead pack went by Gordon on lap 102 to put him a lap down. A caution for rain on lap 123 found Gordon in 28th place, one lap down. The intensity of the rain picked up and the event was red flagged.

After a three-hour delay, the race resumed at 7pm/eastern time. Gordon immediately went to his pit stall for additional repairs on the car. Gordon restarted in 29th place (1 lap down) with 56 laps to go. He moved to 28th after Joey Logano pulled behind the wall but was unable to keep pace with the lead draft. Following the final green flag pit stop, Gordon ran in 25th place. A caution for Michael McDowell’s wall contact with 14 to go brought out the caution. Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap. He restarted 25th with 10 laps to go. He moved to 24th and was collected in a multi-car wreck in turn 3 with 6 laps to go. Gordon spun sideways on the apron and continued on to cross the line in 16th place. Gordon came to pit road to clear the grass from the front of the car. He restarted 15th for the green/white/checkered finish and moved into 11th for the finish. Gordon moved up to a tie for 13th in the series standings.

Turning point
Gordon had nowhere to go when a multi-car wreck began in front of him on lap 43. The front of the car was damaged, which impacted the handling during the event.

 JG’s comments
“I thought we got lucky in that first accident. We were kind of squeezed but we made it through. But the damage was a little bit more severe than we anticipated. I also had the toe knocked out so the speed or the handling wasn’t there in the car.”

Not even a pole position could change Jeff Gordon’s bad luck in 2012. Gordon was caught up in a wreck with 45 laps to go at Talladega Superspeedway and finished 33rd. It was his seventh finish of 21st or worse in the last 12 races. He lost six spots in the series points standings and is now 23rd — the lowest after 10 races in his NASCAR career.

Gordon started on the pole and dropped to 6th on the opening lap before his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne picked him up in the draft. On lap 6, Gordon moved to the high line and dropped back to 28th place in an effort to cool the engine. By lap 10, he was running 30th and seemed content to stay out of the lead pack. The first caution waved on lap 16 for Regan Smith’s blown engine. Gordon restarted 19th and locked into a draft with Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The trio moved into the top-10 by lap 25, but separated within 5 laps. Gordon dropped to 15th before regrouping on the outside line. He worked with Marcos Ambrose and moved to 2nd place on lap 53. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 59 and opted for left side tires. Following stops, Gordon ran in 3rd place behind Earnhardt Jr and Matt Kenseth.

On lap 75, he opted not to give Earnhardt Jr a drafting push and radioed to his crew about evening the tally with his “teammate” — a reference to getting hung out in the draft earlier in the race. On lap 85, Gordon dropped back after his water temperature began spiking. He ran in 28th before green flag pit stops on lap 101. Gordon took right side tires and returned to the race in 8th place.

With 45 laps to go, a melee in turn three collected Gordon when he went low to miss it. Martin Truex came down the track and hit the side of the #24 team. Gordon drilled the outside wall with the right front of the car and drove to the garage area with his second DNF of the season.

Turning point
A melee in turn three with 45 laps to go ended Gordon’s day at Talladega.

JG’s comments
“This is one of the most bizarre years this team has ever gone through. It’s almost comical at this point. It looked like someone came down and got Martin and that turned him into me. That’s just the way our season has been going.”

Jeff Gordon Ties Nascar Pole Record

Jeff Gordon claimed the pole position for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. It is his 71st career pole and marks 20 consecutive years that Gordon has won a pole in the Cup series — tying David Pearson for the most consecutive seasons with a pole. “Hopefully we can build on this,” Gordon said. “I know it’s not a win, but it’s still something good to show that the team’s efforts don’t go unnoticed… When you get torn down it puts you to the test as an individual and as a team. We’ve been put to the test this year. But we’ve not wavered.”

Jeff Gordon started from the pole and hooked up in a tight draft with Mark Martin. The duo moved ahead of the field and Gordon led the first 9 laps. The pair was overtaken by Denny Hamlin on lap 10. Gordon and Martin dropped to 32nd and 33rd after making a swap among themselves. They worked their way up to 27th before Landon Cassill hit Brian Vickers on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag on lap 28. Gordon came to pit road out of sequence with Martin and restarted near the rear of the field. Gordon and Martin ran in 25th/26th for most of the next 50 laps. A multi-car wreck in turn three on lap 90 eliminated Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, David Ragan, and Trevor Bayne. Gordon and Martin ran together in 25th before a debris caution with 60 laps to go. Gordon and Martin ran well behind the next incident with 49 laps to go when Kyle Busch spun and collected Matt Kenseth. The pair moved up to 15th/16th with 35 laps to go. Gordon restarted 21st with 20 to go. With 15 laps to go, Martin pushed Gordon up to the top-5. After Ryan Newman’s spin slowed the field, Gordon restarted 3rd with Martin in 5th with 11 laps to go. On the final lap, Martin pushed Gordon to the lead on the backstretch, but Clint Bowyer edged ahead on the upper groove. Gordon implored Martin to protect the bottom of the track, but his teammate was unable to do so. As they exited turn four, the combination of Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr moved to the low line and edged ahead of Gordon and Bowyer at the finish line. Gordon posted his third top-5 finish of the season with the 3rd place effort.

Road ahead: After an off-weekend for Easter, the series will head to the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway. Gordon’s pre-season test notes from Pikes Peak — as well as the Phoenix victory — should bode well for the Richmond chassis set-up.

April 25 – – Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson did their best to throw ice water on what many viewed as a simmering fued after the race at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, that ice water quickly heated back to a boil as the drivers found each other on the track at an inopportune time at Talladega Superspeedway. Gordon was forced onto the apron with 7 laps to go by Johnson, and was then swept up in a wreck. Gordon finished the event in 22nd place. “The 48 is testing my patience,” said Gordon, in reference to his teammate. “It takes a lot to make me mad and I am pissed right now.” At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jamie McMurray in the tri-oval on the final lap to win his 12th career race.

Gordon started 5th and stayed on the inside line at the outset. He fell back to 27th place by lap 5 and ran in a second draft behind the leaders. On lap 7, he radioed that the lead pack was beginning to get strung out, and he would try and re-join the fray. Two laps later he climbed to the 19th position in the lead draft. He climbed into the top-10 on lap 15 behind a draft from Jimmie Johnson. Gordon slipped back to 14th before the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon restarted 13th after taking four tires. On lap 26, he hooked up in a tight draft with Jeff Burton and moved to 8th place. He stayed behind Burton and moved up to 5th on lap 27, before the outside line powered past. Gordon dropped to 22nd on lap 33 after choosing the wrong drafting line. He remained in the second draft for the next 15 laps.

On lap 48, Gordon worked with Tony Stewart in the second draft back in 24th position. The pair worked out a drafting arrangement to move up in the running order. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 65. After the stops cycled through, he ran in 20th place on the low line before drafting back into the top-10. The caution waved on lap 76 when Michael Waltrip hit the wall off turn four. Denny Hamlin spun toward the infield grass in the chain reaction incident. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for left side tires and exited pit road in 3rd place. He took the lead of the race on lap 80 and ran in a tight draft with Elliott Sadler. Two laps later, Sadler was pushed into the lead by Kurt Busch. The caution waved on lap 84 after Johnny Sauter was turned sideways in the tri-oval. He bounced off Busch and Waltrip, while collecting Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard in the melee.

On the restart, Gordon pushed David Reutimann to the top spot. On lap 90, Gordon jumped to the high side to take the lead. However, his time at the front was short lived as the middle line powered past and pushed him out of the top-10 within seconds. Ten laps later he was in danger of losing the draft after he fell to 30th. Regan Smith’s blown engine on lap 100 brought the caution and allowed Gordon to make up the distance. Gordon spent the next 25 laps running in 24th with Mark Martin. With 60 to go, he hooked up with Martin and moved to 15th. Three laps later, he got a drafting push from Johnson to move into the top-5. However, he was hung in the middle line and lost positions. He fell back to 30th and ran there until green flag pit stops with 42 laps to go. Gordon changed two tires and ran 15th after the stops. With 30 laps to go, he moved to the front of the field for a single lap, before dropping back in the draft. With 12 laps to go, Bobby Labonte spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 17th place.

On the restart, Gordon worked with Mark Martin to move into the top-10. However, with 7 laps to go, Gordon moved low on the backstretch and was forced onto the apron by Jimmie Johnson’s late move. Gordon slipped back after cracking the throttle and was collected in a wreck on the frontstretch after Jeff Burton hit the wall and spun into Gordon’s path. The DuPont crew made repairs and Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap due to a wreck involving Johnson. Gordon was distantly behind the final battle for the lead as Harvick won in a photo finish. Gordon dropped to 10th in the series points standings, and trails Johnson by 193.

April 25 – – It should have stayed in mothballs. In the first race for the Pepsi Challenger in 1983, Darrell Waltrip drilled a dirt bank at Daytona Internaional Speedway, careened back on the track and hit the retaining wall. Twenty-six years later, Jeff Gordon’s day in the Pepsi Challenger was hindered by the same effect — a major wreck on the track. Gordon was involved in a lap 7 wreck at Talladega Superspeedway after being clipped by Matt Kenseth. The front and rear of the car was destroyed. Repairs were made and Gordon finished in 37th. He dropped to 2nd in the series points standings.

Post Crash Comments

IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU CAN GET THE CAR BACK OUT? “I think this is the same way this Pepsi Challenger ended up in ’83. So it sure didn’t look good. It was driving good. We were having a good time there. I was actually working well with Matt (Kenseth) getting up to the front through the middle. I am not really sure what happened. I was just kinda cruising along there in the middle. Matt got up there, I think behind, maybe the No. 11 and he went low and so I was just cruising on up the middle.

“Matt went down with the No. 1 car and I guess what it was, whoever that was on the inside, I don’t think, there just wasn’t enough room. He got underneath Matt, Matt came up and I was already there.

“The car is destroyed. That is Talladega. I don’t know if we are going to be able to fix that. I know these guys are going to work real hard to try and get it back out there and get some points. Just unfortunate.

“There are so many different grooves to race out there. Matt went low so I was just going to go up the middle, it had been working so well for us up to that point. Somebody got to the inside him and closed the door.

“Things were going well, we were having a good time. Just cruising up the middle. Matt got hooked up with the No. 1 car. They started to go low and I think somebody got inside of them just as I was getting to the outside or up the middle of Matt. I don’t if he knew I was there, didn’t know I was there or what happened. But, I just got squeezed and started a big wreck.

“I didn’t see anything out of line. There was nothing. I don’t think that wreck was caused by over aggressive driving. I mean, every race and every wreck I look to see what I could have done different. Looking back on it, I wish I would have just stayed behind Matt. But that is always hindsight. We’re sitting here. It is unfortunate. It is not obviously going to be the day we were looking for.”

Carl Edwards & Brad Keselowsk Final Lap Incident Video

Carl Edwards comments on the the final lap of the Aaron’s 499.  Edwards goes on to say that someone will get killed before Nascar changes the double yellow line rule.  Edwards blocked Keselowski coming to the checkered flag which resulted in Edwards getting turned around and flipped airborne into the fence in spectacular fashion by Ryan Newman.  There were 8 minor injuries to fans in that area of the crash.
