Jeff Gordon Watkins Glen In Car Audio

Jeff Gordon Watkins Glen In Car Audio

For the second time in the last 3 weeks, Jeff Gordon posted a sub-40th place finish. Gordon lost 4 laps at Watkins Glen after a brake fluid line issue on lap 25. Gordon dropped to 14th in the NASCAR Chase standings with 4 races remaining before NASCAR’s playoff begins. The 41st place finish was his worst career finish on a road course. In addition, it’s the first time since 2008 that Gordon posted 2 sub-40th place finishes in the same season.

Gordon started 5th at the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen and dropped to 9th by the end of lap 4. He took 8th from Tony Stewart on lap 12, while complaining of handling issues. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 24. Greg Biffle’s cut tire brought out the caution on lap 26. Gordon returned to pit road to diagnose a brake problem on the #24 car. The crew worked on multiple stops to fix an issue with leaking brake fluid. Gordon sat on pit road and lost multiple laps as the line was fixed. A debris caution on lap 31 slowed the field, while Gordon went 4 laps down on pit road. A crash after a restart on lap 49 eliminated Kasey Kahne, which allowed Gordon to gain a spot on the track. He ran in 42nd place on lap 54. Tony Stewart’s broken gear provided Gordon was another spot to gain and he moved to 41st on lap 60 where he finished the event.

JG’s comments
“It’s disappointing. We can’t afford to have these finishes if we’re going to make the Chase. Just when you think you get something that goes your way, and something like this happens. We keep fighting and digging and trying to get the finishes we need to get solidly in there. We need to improve performance-wise, but I think our performance is not bad. Right now it’s the unknown. The concerns of freak things happening like what happened at Indy (and) what happened here. Those are things out of your control. We’re all about the things you can control. From that standpoint, we’re trying to improve the performance of the car slightly. We’re not far off, though.”

After capturing the pole position at Watkins Glen, it looked as if Jeff Gordon would be a serious contender at the track for the first time since 2007. He led the opening 29 laps, and seemed to be running down race leader Marcos Ambrose just after the halfway point. However, a power issue forced Gordon to coast to the pit area on lap 51. He lost 4 laps in the process. It was just the third time in the last 24 races where Gordon failed to post a top-15 finish. Gordon started on the pole and led the opening laps before Cole Whitt’s crash brought out the caution on lap 9. He pulled away on the restart with Marcos Ambrose tracking him in 2nd place. The first round of green flag stops came on lap 29. Gordon returned to the race in 2nd behind Ambrose. At the halfway point, he ran more than 2 seconds behind Ambrose. However, Gordon slowed on the track on lap 51 and coasted to a stop on the track. He received a push from a safety vehicle to go to the garage area. He lost 4 laps while repairs were made.

Just as Gordon returned to the race, a hard crash involving Ryan Newman and Michael McDowell forced a red flag condition. The race was red-flagged for nearly 90 minutes while repairs to the track barrier were made. Gordon ran in 36th place after the restart and came to pit road with 22 laps to go for fuel and tires. A caution with 12 laps to go saw Gordon move up to 35th place, but he remained 4 laps down. A caution for Jimmie Johnson and Regan Smith’s crash after the restart with 9 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon took 34th due to Smith’s misfortune. With 4 laps to go, Denny Hamlin crashed into the barrels at pit entrance, which necessitated a clean-up period and a 20-minute red flag delay. Gordon posted a 34th place finish.

Turning point
Gordon lost power on the track on lap 51 and needed a push to the pit area. He lost 4 laps in the process.

JG’s comments
I was having so much fun out there leading and battling with Marcos Ambrose who I have so much respect for on these tracks. We got a little bit behind on the [first pit sequence]. Marcos came in a little before us. Between that — and I got held up a little on that lap — we were charging back getting to him. Then I came off the carousel and all the power went out. I flipped batteries and did everything that we do in that situation. It just never had any power. So, I’m not sure what caused it. We changed the battery and had power.”

An early race incident on the Watkins Glen road course has put Jeff Gordon’s hopes of qualifying for the Chase in jeopardy. Gordon crashed on lap 14 and finished 36th in a badly damaged car. He dropped to 13th in the series standings. “It’s unfortunate,” Gordon said. “I had a big run on the 11 (Denny Hamlin). I got up on him and the nose just completely took off. Put me in the wall… put me in the grass and from that point on I was just a passenger. We’ll get it fixed, go out there, and ride around. That’s the penalty for making a mistake like that. You have to go out there and drive something like I’m getting ready to drive around there all day. We pay the price in the points. So, on to next week.”

Marcos Ambrose took his second career win — and second in a row at Watkins Glen — with a victory in the Finger Lakes 355k. Ambrose took the lead from Brad Keselowski in turn 5, after Keselowski had bumped Kyle Busch from the lead in the esses. Jeff Gordon’s day took a negative turn on the final lap where he spun in oil and finished 21st.

Gordon started 12th and moved into the top-10 on lap 3. He moved to 8th on lap 9 and closed in on Ryan Newman for 7th place. After battling loose handling, Gordon came in for a green flag pit stop on lap 23. The first caution waved on lap 25 for Jamie McMurray’s blown tire and subsequent contact with the guard rail. Due to the earlier stop, Gordon stayed on the track and moved up to 4th place for the restart. The handling began going away and Gordon dropped to 6th on lap 35. His descent continued as he fell to 8th on lap 37, and dropped to 10th on lap 38. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 41. Gordon moved from 29th up to 16th before a caution for Denny Hamlin’s blown engine on lap 59.

Gordon came to pit road for chassis adjustments and restarted in 18th. A caution for Jason Leffler’s engine with 26 to go slowed the field. Tony Stewart’s spin into the pit road guard rail brought out the caution with 20 to go. With 12 laps to go, Gordon moved up to 16th place. With 5 to go, he took 11th place from Martin Truex. Two laps later he moved into the top-10 with a pass on Paul Menard. However, he spun going for 9th place on the final lap and fell to 21st. Gordon is now out of the Chase wildcard spot, trailing Ryan Newman by 10 points, as well as Kyle Busch.

Turning point
After battling into the top-10 in the closing stages, Gordon spun on the final corner of the race and dropped to 21st.

JG’s comments

“Oil all over the racetrack. It’s pretty ridiculous that they don’t want to end a race under caution and put that many cars in jeopardy. I had no idea there was oil out there. I knew there was all kinds of havoc happening all around. I’m pretty bummed out right now. We didn’t have the day I thought we were going to have. I thought our car was a lot better than that. We started pretty good, but I knew something wasn’t right. We tried to make an adjustment and didn’t go the right way — went backwards. Alan and the guys made some adjustments during the last stop. We weren’t good on the restart, but man did it come on. We were passing cars left and right, I was having a blast. To work that hard all day long, to come all the way from way back to the top-10 and have it taken away because they didn’t want to throw a caution is pretty disappointing. I jumped out there to the outside of Matt Kenseth. I think he could see the oil because he just gave it to me. I went out there and there was no grip, it just came around.”

Watkins Glen In-Car Audio

August 15, 2011 by admin 41721 Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2011%2F08%2F15%2Fwatkins-glen-in-car-audio-2%2FWatkins+Glen+In-Car+Audio2011-08-16+03%3A31%3A42adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D4172

An ill-timed caution flag with 25 laps to go ended Jeff Gordon’s chances for his first Watkins Glen victory since 2001. Nevertheless, he posted a 13th place finish and held onto 7th in the series points standings.

Under overcast skies, Gordon started 17th and moved into the top-10 by lap 11. He advanced as high as 7th before a pit stop sequence on lap 26. The first caution waved on lap 28 for Greg Biffle running out of gas on the track. Gordon advanced up to 3rd on lap 32 due to pit strategy. He took the race lead on lap 40 after Juan Pablo Montoya pitted, before losing the top spot to Kyle Busch on lap 44. At the halfway point on lap 45, he ran in 3rd place. Gordon pitted under caution on lap 50 after Kurt Busch wrecked. He restarted in 17th and again moved up through traffic. Due to a pit sequence, he moved to 2nd on lap 64. He took the race lead on lap 65, but was caught on the track when Denny Hamlin crashed in turn 1 — on the lap where he wanted to come to pit road. Gordon eventually pitted under the caution and restarted in 20th place. He moved up to 13th with 4 laps to go before a debris caution slowed the field and set up a green/white/checkered finish.

On the final lap, Gordon eased around Tony Stewart when he went through the grass in the inner loop and finished 13th. It was his ninth top-13 finish in the last 10 races as he held 7th in the points standings.

Road ahead: The series heads to Michigan Speedway for the second time in 2011. Jeff Gordon struggled with handling in the first Michigan race and improvement on the 2-mile oval will be critical going forward as NASCAR closes in on the Chase for the Championship.

Watkins Glen In Car Audio – 2010

August 9 – – Juan Pablo Montoya dominated on the Watkins Glen road course en route to his second career victory. Montoya won by more than 5 seconds over Kurt Busch and Marcos Ambrose. Jeff Gordon was never a factor for the lead, but ran his best laps late in the race to salvage a 10th place finish.

Gordon started 14th and dropped a spot on the opening lap to Robby Gordon. On lap 15, he followed Robby Gordon past Jimmie Johnson to take 13th place. Two laps later he took 12th from Robby. The handling became looser as the green flag run continued and Gordon came to pit road for tires on lap 27. A caution for P.J. Jones slowed the field on lap 28. Gordon ran 12th at the caution flag. The second caution waved on lap 40 after Bobby Labonte stopped in the inner loop area of the track. Crew chief Steve Letarte elected to take track position and kept Gordon on the track during the caution period. The green flag waved at the halfway point — lap 45 — with Gordon losing a spot on track to Clint Bowyer. He ran in 15th on lap 48, nearly 2 miles per hour slower per lap than race leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

Gordon re-assumed the 14th spot from Bowyer on lap 57 and ran more than 20 seconds behind the leaders. He came to pit road for his final stop on lap 60. A slower stop due to the insertion of a spring rubber sent him back to 25th in the running order before a debris caution on lap 62 slowed the field. The next caution waved with 26 laps to go when Tony Stewart clipped the rear of Boris Said’s car sending the Red Bull Toyota into the turn two guardrail. Gordon moved up to 14th due to drivers pitting and the wreck in front of him. With 20 laps to go, Jimmie Johnson spun in turn 11 and collected Denny Hamlin in the melee. Gordon gained a spot and restarted in 13th with 16 laps to go. A lap after the restart, Gordon took 12th from Sam Hornish. With 10 laps go, Gordon took 11th from Ryan Newman. On the final lap, Gordon got around the slowing car of Kevin Harvick to take 10th on an otherwise forgettable afternoon in upstate New York.

August 10 – – The rain-delayed HelluvaGood at the Glen was a day of ups and downs — well, mostly downs — for Jeff Gordon.  Before the race, Gordon took the blame for a poor qualifying effort, yielding a 31st place start.  The team’s goals for the day were to have fun and play strategy to gain track position, hoping for a lucky caution.

Gordon clawed his way through heavy traffic and took advantage of an excellent first pit stop to reach 16th place by lap 22.  On lap 23, the David Stremme’s talent evaporation resulted in a spun in the inner loop, damaging Gordon’s and Kevin Harvick’s cars and forcing an extra pit stop.

Gordon once again chewed his way from 31st to 20th at lap 41 when Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed, but couldn’t move his damaged car forward.  On lap 62, Sam Hornish ricocheted off the inside barrier in turn 9 after contact with Kasey Kahne and helicoptered into Gordon’s car, slamming it into the barrier in a head-on crash that ended Gordon’s day.  Gordon exited under his own power and was saddled with his first DNF of the season with a 37th place finish.

At the front of the field, Tony Stewart held Marcos Ambrose at bay to win his 5th career race at Watkins Glen — the most of any driver.  Stewart expanded his points lead to more than 250 points on Jimmie Johnson, and more than 340 points on Jeff Gordon.  Maybe there is some silver lining in the Chase system after all.

Post Race Comments

“It wasn’t that hard of a hit its just my back can’t stand too many hits. I really was concerned for Sam (Hornish). He took a heavy hit into the wall, a heavy hit by me and Jeff Burton. I saw him go off into the grass and I knew he was going to come out in front of me and I was just hoping to squeeze by and didn’t make it. It just made a rough weekend for the DuPont Chevrolet even worse. Now we just leave here and focus on Michigan.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL RIGHT NOW?

“I’m hurting. Everything feels good except my lower back where I’ve already had issues. It will just take a couple of weeks for it to heal. By then we’ll go to Bristol and get through that then we’ll be alright.”

WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO HIT HIM, DO YOU BRACE DOWN OR RELAX?

“The first thing I was trying to do was make it by him. Actually I sped up a little bit. I saw him slide off there and I was trying to get off the corner as fast as I could to get by before he got out there but as soon as I saw him and bounce out I knew I was going to hit him. I just braced myself and got on the brakes and waited for the impact.”

HOW IS YOUR BACK? ARE YOU OKAY?

“It’s just not what I needed you know. You take three or four steps forward up to this point, and you take a hit like that and you take a couple steps backwards. So yeah, it was a heavy impact. I’m just glad Sam (Hornish) is all right. I saw him get wide there off the carousel and I knew he was going to hit the tire barrier and ricochet off and I was just hoping I’d get by him before he got out to me and man, I nailed him and spun him around like a top and my car just came to a halt and it really took a toll on my back again. So I hate that, but I was real proud of this DuPont Chevrolet team. We didn’t have a great weekend going and the car wasn’t perfect, but we were playing out the strategy and got caught up in that first incident. It’s just one of those days. But we were going to ride it out and make something out of it. I think Steve Letarte had some tricks up his sleeve with the pit strategy. Just wrong place, wrong time.”

WHAT WILL YOU HAVE TO DO THIS WEEK TO GET READY FOR MICHIGAN NEXT WEEK WITH YOUR BACK?

“Oh, Michigan is pretty easy. If we were going to Bristol next week, I’d be concerned. So we’ve got a couple of weeks to hopefully heal. We went through this at Dover when I hit at Dover and hurt my back as well. Every time I hit something it takes a toll on my back, but it seems to recover. But when you’re braking that hard it’s already pretty tight and then you hit like that and it spasms a bit. But we’ll be all right. Rough hit really for Sam. I saw him get taken wide there off the carousel and once I saw him starting to go around I knew he was going to get the outside wall and I kind of knew with what we saw with Jason Lefler in the Nationwide race. I was just trying to pick where to go. I don’t know if there is any safe place to go from where I was sitting. I just nailed him. I tried to squeeze by him on the outside and there was just no way. Nailed him and spun him around like a top. It took a toll on my back. Nothing else hurts, everything else is good. It’s jsut the back. Then I got into the outside wall the other side and was just sitting there in the track hoping nobody was going to hit me again.”

ITS BEEN A TOUGH WEEKEND FOR YOU.

“Sure. The only saving grace is that there are no road courses in the Chase. You want the bonus points. You want a good run. You want momentum. We just haven’t been good here in quite some time. I think our car was actually decent today we just didn’t qualify good enough to show for it. We moved up quite a few spots which is already tough to do on a road course. You don’t see anybody passing unless they’ve got fresh tires out there. I got caught up in that first incident and that really messed up our strategy. We were making some ground up until that happened. I’m proud of the guys. We made improvements as the weekend went on. We’ll just have to wait until the next time we come back here to show just how many improvements we really made?”

ARE YOU SORE?

“Oh man, my left side and my back is super sore. It’s going to take probably a couple of weeks for it to heal completely and then we’ll be back to new. This happened at Dover when I hit the wall in Dover it was similar. This is a little bit different angle and it’s hurting. Luckily we’ve got Michigan coming up next weekend. It’s pretty easy on things.”

WHAT’S YOUR FIRST REACTION AFTER SOMETHING LIKE THAT?

“Well first reacation is man that hurt and then you hope you don’t get hit again. I was just bracing myself. I saw cars that were still coming by pretty fast. As long as the car wasn’t on fire I was good to sit in there until everybody went by. Then I just wanted to get out and see what kind of pain I was in with my back. I knew I was hurting and then was wondering is Sam (Hornish) was okay because he took a couple of heavy hits there. I saw Jeff Burton was in it too so just making sure everybody was alright and then get back here and go home.”

HOW MUCH DO YOU PROTECT YOUR BACK NOW? “There’s nothing you can do. You got to get out there and you’ve got to just hope you don’t get into situations. It’s not life-threatening or anything its just painful. I’ve had MRI’s and everything else after these things and everything looks fine. It’s just some spasms that go on. You’ve just got to calm that down but it doesn’t just calm down by itself in a day. It really does take a couple of weeks.”

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International has been postponed because of rain and rescheduled for Monday.

A thunderstorm hit the track about 2 p.m. Sunday when drivers were about to start their engines. The course takes at least two hours to dry. Rain was still falling at 4 p.m, making it too late to complete the 90-lap event before sunset.

The track stretches nearly 2 1/2 miles around 11 turns and has several elevation changes.

NASCAR rescheduled the race for noon Monday. Last week’s race at Pocono also was moved to Monday because of rain.

Blurb from Gordonline.com

August 8 – – It’ll be a long way to the front for Jeff Gordon in Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen after he qualified in the 31st position — his worst career starting spot on the upstate New York road course. Since 2002, Gordon has finished 22nd, 33rd, 21st, 13th, 13th, 9th, and 21st in six races on the upstate New York circuit. Despite testing at a road course earlier this year, and running strong at Infineon Raceway in June, Gordon will need a Herculean effort to see the front during Sunday’s race.
