Pocono – PA 500 In Car Audio

August 2 – – For a period of time during the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway it looked as if Jeff Gordon was on the verge of snapping his 50-race winless drought. Gordon led the late stages of the event, but opted for four tires during a pit stop with 30 laps to go. Several drivers took two tires and used the track position to their advantage. Gordon moved from 11th to 6th in the closing laps, but was unable to seriously challenge for the win when it mattered.

Gordon raced in the top-5 for the entire race — except the ending. He started 4th and took the lead on lap 3. Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson led the balance of the first half of the race, before Denny Hamlin took the lead after the halfway point. With 45 laps to go, Gordon took the lead off of a restart from Juan Pablo Montoya. Nine laps later, Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler crashed on the backstretch to bring out a 25-minute red flag. The field came to pit road with Gordon opting for four tires. He came off pit road in 10th place after several drivers opted for fuel only or two tires. Gordon was in 11th due to Sam Hornish staying out with 30 laps to go. Light rain began falling and the field came to pit road for a red flag delay. After nearly 20 minutes, the engines re-fired and the cars came back on the track. The green flag waved with 21 laps to go.

Gordon lost a spot on the restart before a bump draft from Jimmie Johnson gave him forward momentum. With 17 laps to go, he moved into the 9th position. He passed Ryan Newman with 16 to go, but was passed on the outside by Denny Hamlin. Gordon took 8th from Martin Truex with 9 laps to go as Greg Biffle pulled away at the front of the field. With 5 laps to go, he passed Sam Hornish for 7th. One lap later he took 6th from Mark Martin. Biffle pulled away at the front of the field and snapped a 65-race winless streak. Gordon remained second in the series standings and is now 361 points clear of the Chase cutoff.

June 7 – – The momentum that Jeff Gordon and the DuPont team had in the early spring from several near-wins has become a thing of the past as Gordon has struggled over the last three races. Gordon posted a 32nd place finish at Pocono Raceway after battling loose handling issues for the majority of the event. A late race fuel gamble backfired and Gordon fell through the field after restarting in 6th with 29 laps to go, before being collected in a last lap crash.

A heavy rainstorm delayed the start by nearly 2 hours, and Gordon took the green flag under sunny skies just after 3pm/eastern time. He started 10th and moved up to 7th by the end of lap 2. On lap 6, he moved to the inside of Dale Earnhardt Jr and took 6th at the entrance to turn one. Gordon moved into the top-5 after passing Tony Stewart on lap 10. A competition caution on lap 15 brought the field to pit road with Gordon holding the 5th spot through the stops. After the restart he took 4th from Matt Kenseth on lap 22. He held 4th through a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 50. Gordon’s car was too loose on the long green flag run and crew chief Steve Letarte opted to drop the track bar during a green flag pit stop on lap 77. On lap 84, Gordon lost two spots to Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne while battling a loose handling car. Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 85 to send Gordon back to 7th, and Jeff Gordon sent Gordon to 8th on lap 92.

The second caution waved on lap 97 for debris. Gordon came to pit road for adjustments and departed in 8th place. He moved into 7th on the restart on lap 101, but fell to 10th after AJ Allmendinger, Greg Biffle, and Kasey Kahne passed within a two lap stretch on laps 104-105. Joey Logano took the 10th spot one lap later as Gordon’s fall through the field continued. Gordon later passed Biffle to re-enter the top-10. However, he dropped out of the top-10 on lap 121 when Earnhardt Jr went by on the frontstretch. Gordon pitted under the green flag on lap 132 for adjustments and ran 13th after the cycle of pit stops. A debris caution on lap 154 brought the leaders to pit road. A slow stop sent Gordon back to 17th place for the restart on lap 158. A caution for Casey Mears’ spin followed the restart and Gordon came down pit road to top off the fuel. Crew chief Steve Letarte told Gordon that he was 2 laps short, but some caution laps might help him stretch it to the end. Keyword: Might.

Gordon restarted in 24th position with 35 laps to go. On the restart, David Ragan moved up the track in turn one and clipped Jamie McMurray to bring out the caution. Most of the lead lap cars came to pit road, while Gordon remained out to gain track position. He restarted in 6th place with 29 laps to go. He lost positions to Matt Kenseth and Regan Smith, before Denny Hamlin passed to send Gordon back to 9th with 26 to go. A debris caution slowed the field and set up another restart. Gordon opted to stay on the track and lost positions on the restart. He dropped to 17th with 20 laps to go as his hopes for a solid finish began evaporating in a hurry. With 15 laps to go, he backslid to 21st place. With 2 to go, he was running 23rd when Joey Logano spun in turn three to set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon came to pit road for tires. Gordon restarted 26th and was collected in a major wreck on the final lap after drilling Kasey Kahne’s wrecked car. Gordon posted his worst finish at Pocono since a 34th place effort in 2006 — notable for the heavy wall contact he made after spinning into the turn one wall. His understated comment after the wreck was that it just hadn’t been his day. He exited the car under his own power and quickly headed east.

August 3 – – Denny Hamlin led the most laps en route to his first Cup series victory since March 2008. Hamlin claimed the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway after passing Clint Bowyer for the lead with 10 laps to go.  He kept a charging Juan Pablo Montoya at bay to win for the third time at Pocono.

Jeff Gordon’s day was an exercise in traffic-induced frustration.  He ran in the top-10 for the balance of the race, but a late four-tire change put him back in 15th place.  He battled door to door with Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Jimmie Johnson, among others, in the closing 20 laps.  Gordon finished the race in 8th as the handling on his car seemed at its best in the final run.

Post Race Comments

“It was a good car; definitely the best car we’ve had here in a while. I’m really excited about that and that we’ve been able to make those kinds of improvements. The strategy and the track position didn’t go our way today, so we ended up eighth. But it’s nice when you’re passing cars; good cars even toward the end of the race.”

HOW WAS THE RACING DIFFERENT AT POCONO WITH THE DOUBLE-FILE RESTARTS?
“I can’t even explain to you how insane it was out there. And when you get guys that have no tires that have stayed out, or two tires, against guys that have four tires, it just shakes it up so much because you’ve got such a speed difference and guys trying to hang on to position and guys fighting hard to get ’em and I mean it was just nuts. I saw so many guys rubbing, banging, smokin’ sideways, three-wide, four-wide, and I was right in the middle of it at times as well. It’s not the most fun, but when you make it out of it, you’re like whew, and you know it’s awesome racing to watch on TV and from the grandstands.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON WAS THREE LAPS DOWN AND MANAGED TO COME BACK AND FINISH 13TH. WAS THERE A TIME WHEN YOU GUYS WERE RACING FOR POSITION WHEN YOU WONDERED IS THIS GUY ON THE LEAD LAP?
“Right there at the end I knew he was back on the lead lap and I wasn’t expecting him to pass me, that’s for sure. But you know, these guys, you can never count them out and that’s what makes them a championship caliber team and Jimmie’s a great driver. So, it’s unfortunate that they had a car that was probably capable of winning, or at least battling up there for the win, that it kind of took them out of it there. But they fought back and still had a pretty decent day out of it.”

YOU ARE SOLID WITH FIVE RACES LEFT GOING INTO THE CHASE, DO YOU SAY YOU’RE GOING TO BE MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN YOU TYPICALLY WOULD BE?
“Yeah, I was being aggressive. The set-up was a little bit more aggressive for us, which paid off. Steve Letarte was real aggressive on the pit strategy. He probably is going to beat himself up a little bit over that last one, but all day long we were pitting early and taking two tires, and doing the things we needed to do to get ourselves in position to win. And there at the end, you can’t always factor in guys that are going to be on pit road when the caution comes out. And that cost us probably another three or four positions.”

August 1 – – Jeff Gordon assumed the pole position for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 500 after Tony Stewart crashed in practice. Gordon has a pair of runner-up finishes in his last four races, he has slipped back to third in the points standings. He’ll look to regain some of the lost momentum in Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway. Gordon finished 4th at Pocono in June mainly due to fuel mileage strategy. [gordonline.com]

Pocono 500 In Car Audio

June 7, 2009 by admin 1561Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2009%2F06%2F07%2Fpocono-500-in-car-audio%2FPocono+500+In+Car+Audio2009-06-07+23%3A02%3A43adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D1561

June 8 – – With Jeff Gordon struggling with handling issues during the second half of the Pocono 500, crew chief Steve Letarte elected to play the fuel strategy game. As it turned out, it nearly resulted in a victory.

Gordon started on the outside of the front row and rocketed to the lead before the field entered the first turn. The caution waved on lap 2 after Denny Hamlin stopped on the track. Gordon chose the outside line for the restart and once again beat his teammate into turn one. On lap 6, Johnson passed Gordon coming off turn one. Two laps later, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman took positions and sent Gordon back to 4th.

Gordon struggled with handling as he was unable to get in the throttle coming off the corners. He dropped to 5th after Greg Biffle passed on lap 9. Gordon fell to 7th before the caution waved on lap 14. Pit stops ensued with Gordon departing in 13th place after a series of adjustments. The chassis changes seemed to pay immediate dividends as Gordon moved into the top-10 within one lap of the restart. By lap 20, he was up to 7th position. Gordon’s progress continued after passing Jeff Burton to take 6th on lap 23. However, he was unable to gain ground on the top-5 and remained in the 6th spot until a round of green flag pit stops on lap 45. Gordon moved up to 5th following the cycle of pit stops. He remained 5th through the next cycle of green flag stops on lap 75.

A debris caution on lap 103 during a cycle of pit stops brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon entered in 3rd place and held the position coming off of pit road. He restarted in 5th due to Carl Edwards and Jeff Burton pitting before the caution flag. However, he was hindered by the inside line and dropped to 9th within a lap of the restart. The caution waved on lap 113 after David Stremme hit the wall. Most of the leaders– including Gordon– elected to stay on the track. He fell from 8th to 12th on lap 118 after getting loose in turn three. On lap 121, he dropped another two positions. Kurt Busch passed on lap 122 to put Gordon back to 15th place. The handling problems continued as Gordon fell to 23rd on lap 127. He came to pit road a few laps early under green for chassis adjustments on lap 135. After the cycle of stops, he was up to 20th on lap 140.

With 50 laps to go, Gordon was in 18th and seemed to be making headway on getting a handle on the chassis issues — but time was running out in the race. A caution flag on lap 156 brought the field to pit road, but Gordon remained on the track with light rain falling. Crew chief Steve Letarte, who played the rain game and won in 2007, realized that staying on the track and hoping for a sudden shower was Gordon’s only chance at a victory. When the sun shined through, he was forced to give up the lead. Gordon restarted at the end of the line, but the silver lining was that he’d be able to make it to the finish without stopping for fuel if the race stayed green.

Gordon moved to 18th with 34 laps to go. Three laps later, he moved to 15th with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr. With 30 to go, he took 13th from Kyle Busch. With 15 laps to go, the leaders began pitting, which allowed Gordon to gain positions. He entered the top-10 on lap 186 while in fuel conservation mode with the throttle. On lap 190, Gordon was up to 6th as more leaders came to pit road for fuel. He finished in 4th after two drivers — including Jimmie Johnson — ran out of fuel on the final lap. At the front of the field, Tony Stewart scored his first victory as a car owner. It was the first victory for an owner/driver since Ricky Rudd scored a win in 1998, though Stewart’s car is technically owned by Margaret Haas, the wife of Stewart/Haas co-owner Gene Haas.

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT IMPALA SS, Finished 4th
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TODAY’S RACE WITH THE FUEL MILEAGE SCENARIO?
“We’ve seen it happen at a lot of races. This is a tough place to save so I am really impressed with those guys that finished ahead of us. I am really proud of Steve Letarte and this whole DuPont crew for what they did to get me out there in that position and be able to go all the way. You have to get the finishes any way you can. We never gave up. We were pretty good for a long time. That double-file restart there, boy I will tell you what, it killed us so we have got to work on that a little bit. Just aero-wise, my car was good in a single-file line and when we were in clean air. But whew, it was a handful there in all that dirty air. We got shuffled back there and it kind of worked to our favor. Tried to win it with the rain that didn’t work so fourth place, I am pretty excited about that.”
