Daytona – Coke Zero 400 In-Car Audio

Jeff Gordon finished 6th in his final race at the famed Daytona International Speedway, although the results were overshadowed by a massive crash on the final lap that saw Austin Dillon’s car launched into the catchfence at the start/finish line. At the front of the field, Dale Earnhardt Jr scored the victory. After nearly a 4-hour delay for rain, the Coke Zero 400 took the green flag just before midnight. Gordon started 23rd and quickly moved into the top-20 by using the middle line. He moved low and entered the top-10 by lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 4 for a wreck triggered by David Gilliland’s spin coming off turn 4. The chain reaction in the pack collected Joey Logano, Bobby Labonte, Greg Biffle, Sam Hornish, and Danica Patrick. Gordon restarted 8th on lap 8. He locked into a tight draft with Jimmie Johnson and entered the top-5 on lap 11. He ran 4th when the competition caution came on lap 25. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 4th place after a two-tire change. On the restart, Gordon was caught on the outside line and dropped out of the top-10. He regrouped from 19th place on lap 31 and used the draft to run 11th by lap 35. Gordon worked his way back into the top-10 by lap 40. He ran in 6th place when the caution waved on lap 53 for Carl Edwards’ spin. Gordon held 6th through the round of pit stops. He moved to 5th on the restart prior to the next caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 9th place.

A caution on lap 85 for an incident involving Kyle Larson, Carl Edwards, and Brian Scott. Gordon restarted in 4th place after a two-tire pit stop. After running as high as 3rd, Gordon dropped to 10th in the middle line on lap 100. Gordon narrowly evaded a major wreck on lap 106 which was triggered by Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth. The melee eliminated 10 drivers from contention, including Kahne, Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, Aric Almirola, Kyle Larson, and Martin Truex. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and restarted in 4th place. With 41 to go, Gordon was caught in the middle and dropped to 7th. He regrouped by moving to the low line behind Denny Hamlin. The next caution came on lap 127 for Danica Patrick’s cut tire. Gordon restarted 11th with 28 laps to go. He took a spot from Jimmie Johnson and ran 8th with 25 to go. However, with 23 to go, Gordon was shuffled to the middle line and dropped to 10th. Gordon pulled behind Johnson to re-enter the top-10 on the low line. He moved up to 3rd place behind Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jimmie Johnson with 10 to go. Two laps later, David Ragan spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon restarted 4th with 9 laps to go. However, he was caught in the middle line and dropped to 7th. With 6 to go, Sam Hornish spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution and set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon pushed Kevin Harvick on the final lap, and was collected in the melee after coming across the line in 6th place.

“It was crazy. I’m so glad Austin Dillon’s OK. That was a violent wreck. I hope the fans are OK as well. That was a crazy one. Right from the start I thought it was a wild race with a lot of action and crazy stuff going on. Our car was excellent. It was so good. A couple moves here and there, it’s so hard to predict these races and what line to be in. One time they came up the middle. I thought that was the place to be. Trevor Bayne got to the outside of me and that lane was going. That’s all it takes is that split second decision and one move to go your way or not go your way. We got shuffled back, but we were making good ground behind Kevin Harvick. We were pushing like crazy just wide open. It’s like a video game out there these days, except it’s real life. It’s crazy. I love Daytona. This place has been amazing for me. I can’t believe it’s my final race here. But after going through that experience, I’m glad I just have one more restrictor plate race left.

“I think all the Hendrick cars were strong enough to win, but Dale is so good at picking the lanes, controlling the race, and he’s got a fast race car as well. He does an excellent job. Congrats to those guys.”

Sonoma In-Car Audio

After qualifying in the top-5, Jeff Gordon entered the Save Mart 350 with high hopes of scoring his first win of the season. However, after battling handling issues, Gordon finished 16th. It was just his third finish below 9th place in the last 21 races at Sonoma. The finish snapped his streak of 9 consecutive top-10’s at Sonoma.

Gordon started 5th and took 4th from Matt Kenseth on lap 4. He took 3rd from Kyle Larson on lap 8 but was unable to close on Kurt Busch and AJ Allmendinger at the front of the field. The first caution waved on lap 22 for David Gilliland’s crash. Gordon followed the leaders to pit road and restarted in 11th place after several drivers stayed out. He slipped to 12th prior to the next caution on lap 28 for Martin Truex’s crash. He moved up to 10th when two drivers came to pit road. On the restart he took 9th from Kyle Larson and moved to 8th on lap 34 with a move around Brad Keselowski. Gordon took 7th from Justin Allgaier on lap 35 and advanced to 6th by passing Jamie McMurray. He re-entered the top-5 by passing Ryan Newman on lap 40. However, after battling handling issues, he fell to 7th on lap 45 when Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. went by. His struggles continued as Kyle Larson and Kasey Kahne passed on lap 50. After David Ragan took a position, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 51. When the cycle of stops was completed, Gordon ran in 11th place.

The third caution waved on lap 74 for JJ Yeley’s crash. Gordon came to pit road for adjustments as spring rubbers were pulled out of the right rear. Gordon restarted at the rear of the field because of a pit crew penalty for throwing equipment. He advanced to 25th when David Ragan and Carl Edwards wrecked on lap 78. Gordon worked his way back into the top-20 with 16 laps to go. He ran 18th when the caution waved with 12 laps to go for Casey Mears’ broken axle. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 3rd place behind Jimmie Johnson and Jamie McMurray with 8 laps to go. On the restart, Gordon held 3rd until Kyle Busch took a spot in turn 11. Clint Bowyer took a spot from Gordon with 5 laps to go. Kurt Busch dropped Gordon to 6th. One lap later he fell to 8th when Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano went by. With 3 laps to go, he fell out of the top-10 when Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman passed. Gordon faded to 13th with 2 to go, and finished the event in 16th place.

“We had to make some big adjustments and lose track position, but the car was really good there at the end. “It was a great weekend. Nothing’s going to take away from this weekend for me. I know it wasn’t the finish we all wanted, but it was fun to hang out with some of my friends. I hate that we weren’t a little bit better. The (ending), that was just taking some risks on the last pit stop. We didn’t have anything to lose.”

After replacing two members of the pit crew on the #24 team this week, it was a miscue on pit road that cost Jeff Gordon at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon was running in the top-15 when he pitted on lap 88. However, the jack came down before the left front lug nuts were tightened. A second pit stop put Gordon a lap down. Heavy rain came on lap 138 which shortened the race.

Under overcast skies, Gordon started 6th and used the outside line to his advantage to move up to 4th on the opening lap. The first caution came on lap 11 for rain, which resulted in a red flag. After a one-hour track drying delay, the field rolled off pit road shortly before 2:30pm/eastern. However, as the field circled the track under caution, the rain once again picked up and brought a second red flag condition. After 45 minutes of track drying, the cars rolled off pit road. The green flag waved on lap 28. Gordon held the 4th spot on the restart and ran there at the lap 40 competition caution. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires. However, with the first stall entering pit road, Gordon was held up by traffic and exited pit road in 13th place. Rain once again picked up and the red flag was displayed for the third time. The restart came at lap 49 and the field ran just 3 laps before a caution for Kyle Busch’s crash coming off turn 4. Gordon slipped to 15th on the inside line. He dropped to 18th after the restart, but worked his way up to 16th by lap 70. He entered the top-15 on lap 75 with a move around Clint Bowyer. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 88. However, Gordon needed to come back to pit road just a lap later to tighten lug nuts on the left front. He cycled through in 38th place, one lap down.

At the halfway point, he ran in 31st place, one lap down. Gordon passed drivers who were a lap down and ran 28th on lap 115. A caution for debris slowed the field on lap 125 with Gordon in 18th place, one lap down. He came to pit road for tires and restarted in 26th place. He moved into the free pass position on lap 131 in 19th place. However, one lap later Ryan Newman went by to put Gordon in 20th place. Rain on lap 137 resulted in a red flag with Gordon in 21st place.

“We have not had the best of days. Our car was pretty good, but we had an issue on that green flag stop and went down a lap. Things didn’t go very well on that restart. We needed this thing to go all the way.”

Jeff and Alan – Radio Meltdown at Pocono

There was plenty of fireworks between Jeff and crew chief Alan Gustafson while discussing pit strategy late in the Axalta 400 at Pocono. I can’t ever recall such a heated exchange between Jeff and crew over the radio before.  Was this just the heat of the battle or something deeper?  Thoughts?

Jeff Gordon finished 14th at Pocono Raceway after a mid-race caution flag essentially killed his strategy. Gordon had lost track position on a restart and stayed on the track during a caution period. He took the race lead on lap 92, but a caution on lap 94 brought him to pit road and put him back in traffic after most of the lead lap cars stayed out. Gordon posted his fourth consecutive top-15 finish and sits 10th in NASCAR total points.

Gordon started 4th and moved to 2nd on the opening lap by using the outside line to his advantage. Martin Truex passed on lap 5 to send Gordon back to 3rd. Three laps later, Kevin Harvick took a spot. Gordon eventually ran down Carl Edwards to take 3rd on lap 21. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 28 and cycled through in 3rd place. NASCAR waved the first caution on lap 49 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 6th place after a few drivers opted for two fresh tires. On the restart, Gordon went high in turn 1 and dropped outside the top-10. He fell as low as 14th before regrouping to move back into 11th place on lap 61. He re-entered the top-10 by passing Ryan Newman on lap 62. The second caution came on lap 69 for Ricky Stenhouse’s crash. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 13th place after several drivers stayed out. Gordon lost a couple of spots on the restart after Kasey Kahne dove to the inside heading into turn 1. He regrouped and took 15th from Brad Keselowski on lap 82. The next caution came on lap 87 for Jimmie Johnson’s cut tire. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 2nd place on lap 91.

Gordon moved to the race lead on lap 92 after the restart. Two laps later, the caution waved for Alex Bowman’s spin in turn 3. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 25th place. At the 100-lap mark, he ran in 20th place. Gordon gained one spot in the next 20 laps and ran 19th when the caution waved for Sam Hornish’s cut tire and crash on lap 121. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 19th place on lap 125. Brett Moffitt’s spin on lap 129 brought out the caution. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 20th place. Just two laps after the restart, the caution came again for Danica Patrick’s crash in turn 1. Gordon restarted in 19th place with 21 laps to go. One lap after the restart, AJ Allmendinger wrecked Ryan Newman in turn 1 to bring out a caution. He restarted in 21st place with 16 laps to go. He gained 5 spots within the next 3 laps and ran in 16th place with 12 to go. Three laps later, he took 15th place from Clint Bowyer. Gordon advanced to 14th with a move around Casey Mears with 4 to go.

Jeff Gordon posted a hard-fought 10th place finish in the FedEx 400 at Dover International Speedway. Gorodn started 22nd and battled handling issues for the balance of the event. However, a well-timed caution flag late in the event allowed him to get back on the lead lap. Fresher tires gave Gordon the chance to solidify a top-10 effort. It was Gordon’s 5th top-10 in the last 6 races at Dover.

Gordon started 22nd and moved into the top-20 by the end of the first lap. On lap 15, he took 15th from Paul Menard with an outside move coming off turn 2. His forward progress slowed as he took 14th place from Ricky Stenhouse on lap 55. The first caution for debris waved on lap 72 as Gordon was less than 3 seconds from going a lap down. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarting in 15th on lap 79. He made steady progress after the restart and took 13th from Greg Biffle on lap 90. However, Clint Bowyer took a spot from Gordon on lap 107. Five laps later he dropped to 16th as his lap times slowed. However, he regrouped to move back up to 14th place by lap 150. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 156. The second caution waved on lap 161 for Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact. Gordon came to pit road for additional adjustments and restarted in 17th place. The next caution waved on lap 175 for a crash involving Trevor Bayne, Michael Annett, and Justin Allgaier. Gordon stayed on the track during the caution and moved up to 11th for the restart on lap 183.

At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 15th place as drivers with fresher tires went by. He battled handling issues and dropped to 18th by lap 230. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 250, and cycled through in 17th place. The next caution waved for debris on lap 261. Pit stops followed and Gordon restarted in 17th. He took spots from Brian Scott and Aric Almirola to move back into the top-15 on lap 280. With 100 laps to go, he passed Danica Patrick to take 14th. He took 12th with 90 to go after Matt Kenseth came to pit road. Gordon took 11th from Joey Logano on lap 318 and closed in on the top-10. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 335 and cycled through in 17th place (1 lap down) due to some pushing the limits on fuel. After Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski came to pit road, Gordon advanced to 12th place with 40 to go and got back on the lead lap. However, he dropped a lap down when race leader Kevin Harvick passed with 27 to go. A caution with 25 to go for Kyle Busch and Brian Scott’s crash allowed Gordon to get back on the lead lap in 11th place.

Gordon moved up to 9th with 15 to go when Denny Hamlin crashed and collected Kurt Busch. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 9th. He took 8th from Aric Almirola with 7 to go, and took 7th from Clint Bowyer with 5 to go. A caution for Casey Mears’ spin with 2 laps to go set up a green/white/checkered finish. On the restart, Gordon dropped back on the inside line and came across the line in 10th place.

“It kind of seems to be our regular finishes and performances. We just aren’t good enough to be further up there. We have some work to do. We fought hard today that is for sure. I like the fight, but we have to get better than that.”

Coca-Cola 600 In-Car Audio

At the outset of the Coca-Cola 600, Jeff Gordon struggled with handling, but he fully expected the handling on the #24 to be dialed in after nightfall. However, the car never performed to Gordon’s expectations and finished 15th in his final start in NASCAR’s longest race. At the front of the field, Carl Edwards scored his first win of the season and 24th of his career.

Gordon started 18th and worked his way into the top-15 by the end of lap 11. He ran 15th at the competition caution on lap 25. He restarted 13th on lap 30. Gordon took 11th from Jimmie Johnson on lap 36, but was unable to gain further ground. Paul Menard passed to take 11th on lap 64, and Greg Biffle sent Gordon back to 13th on lap 70. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 78 and cycled through in 18th place after adjustments. The next caution waved on lap 90 for Jimmie Johnson’s half spin in turn 4. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting 21st on lap 94. He struggled on the restart and fell to 26th by lap 100. He steadily worked through traffic and ran in 21st place on lap 135. The third caution came on lap 136 for Justin Allagaier’s wall contact. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 19th place on lap 140. He picked up two spots after the restart to run 17th on lap 150. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 188 and cycled through in 13th place. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 14th place as dusk enveloped the track.

A caution for Trevor Bayne’s wall contact on lap 230 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. A miscue on pit road resulted in Gordon coming back in to tighten lug nuts. He restarted in 17th place on lap 235 and gained one spot over the next 30 laps. The caution waved on lap 273 for Jimmie Johnson’s crash off of turn 4. The caution allowed Gordon to make up a 20-second gap to the leader. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarting in 15th place on lap 278. Ryan Blaney’s engine expired on lap 281 to bring out another caution. Gordon stayed on the track while most of the lead lap cars pitted. He restarted in 8th place with 110 laps to go. Gordon moved to 7th on the restart, but fell to 9th at the 300-lap mark as Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski passed. He rebounded to take 8th from Matt Kenseth with 91 to go, albeit briefly as Kurt Busch passed two laps later. Kasey Kahne sent Gordon back to 10th with 85 to go. A caution with 72 to go for Michael Annett’s spin brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon exited pit road in 11th place. However, he faded to 14th just a lap after the restart. A caution for Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact slowed the field with 64 to go. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 13th place.

With 40 to go, Gordon moved to 12th with a move around Austin Dillon. He advanced to 11th when Denny Hamlin pitted with a loose wheel. As drivers began pitting, Gordon moved into the top-5 with 20 laps to go. He ran 3rd behind Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle with 19 to go. Gordon came to pit road with 18 to go and opted for 2 tires. He cycled through in 16th place and finished the event in 15th.

“I never could get track position. We got it one time and held on to it OK and, I have no idea what sequence of events happened there at the end for us to finish 15th. That was a lot of darn work for us to finish 15th.”

All-Star Race In-Car Audio

Jeff Gordon’s final start in the All-Star Race netted a 4th place finish. Gordon started 9th in the first segment of the event. He moved up to 6th place by the end of lap 3. He dropped to 7th when Kurt Busch went by on lap 11. He battled tight handling and took 6th from Greg Biffle at the end of the first segment. The drivers came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 7th place. On the restart, Gordon used the inside line to his advantage and moved to 4th place on lap 27. He took 3rd from Denny Hamlin on lap 29 where he closed the second segment of the event. The crew changed four tires and Gordon restarted in 7th place due to some drivers opting for two tires. The inside line struggled at the start of the third segment after Joey Logano and Jamie McMurray made contact. Gordon slipped to 8th on lap 52. He took 7th from McMurray on lap 56. Two laps later he took 6th from Matt Kenseth where he concluded the third segment. Gordon exited pit road in 8th place after taking four tires. On the restart, he slipped to 10th before regrouping to take 9th on lap 79 from Joey Logano. Five laps later he took 8th from Kenseth. Gordon passed AJ Allmendinger to take 7th place on lap 89 where he finished the segment. The drivers came to pit road based on their average finish in the first 4 segments. Gordon came to pit road in 5th place based on the average finish. He exited pit road in 5th place for the restart of the final 10-lap segment.

On the restart, Gordon moved up to 4th behind Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Kurt Busch. As Hamlin pulled away to win, Gordon briefly battled with Kurt Busch for 3rd place before settling into 4th where he finished the event.

JG’s comments
“Having Ingrid, the kids, my mom, and my dad there (pre-race) was amazing. That was a surprise to me. I asked my parents, ‘Why are you guys here? I never see you at driver introductions.’ So, that was special. Something I’ll never forget. We had a really solid performance overall as a team. I’m really excited about that performance that we can take to next week’s 600. I think our car is pretty good and we can make it a little better.”

ON THE RACE
“Homestead will affect me a lot more as it probably will be my last race. It’s awesome to see all the fans and all the things they did on the track. But as far as really putting it all in perspective – it sinking in that that was my last All-Star race – I wasn’t thinking like that. I was focused in on the race. We were solid. I was pretty happy with the performance of the car. It’s so hard to get that track position that you need. A couple of guys were able to make some moves and maneuver through. We made a few but not many. It was all about lining up on the inside. When we lined up on the inside a few times and made up some spots When we lined up on the outside we lost some. At the end we were on the inside (passing three cars) and had a decent average. We were decent and got a fourth-place finish for it.”

Jeff Gordon posted a 4th place finish at Kansas Speedway which surely was not indicative of how the night seemed to be playing out. Gordon battled handling issues for most of the night, and at one point was less than a second from going a lap down. However, a well-timed caution flag kept him on the lead lap, and a late call to stay on the track during a caution period gave him the chance to post his 3rd top-5 in the last 4 races at Kansas. Gordon started 11th and slipped to 14th on the first lap before regrouping to take 11th on lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 4 for JJ Yeley’s spin. At the competition caution on lap 25, Gordon ran in 13th place. The crew changed 2 tires and Gordon restarted in 10th place. After dropping to 12th, he regrouped to enter the top-10 on lap 44. Gordon took a spot from Tony Stewart to move up to 8th, prior to Matt Kenseth passing to take 9th on lap 61. He battled handling issues and fell out of the top-10 on lap 70. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 80. Following stops he ran in 14th place as race leader Martin Truex closed within a second to put him a lap down. However, Jeb Burton’s spin on lap 93 brought out the caution to keep Gordon on the lead lap. Pit stops followed with Gordon gaining 4 spots to restart in 10th place. Rain began falling and the race was red-flagged shortly after 8:30pm/eastern.

The race resumed after 11pm/eastern following rain and track drying. He ran between 7th-13th over the next 100 laps as the crew made adjustments during caution perods. With 79 to go, Gordon stayed out during a caution to move up to 4th for the restart. He took 3rd after the restart before a caution for Erik Jones’ wall contact with 71 to go. He closed in on Kyle Larson for 2nd place before a caution for Denny Hamlin’s cut tire with 60 to go. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires. However, a problem on the right front put him back in 11th place for the restart. Handling became an issue back in traffic as he fell to 13th with 45 to go. Gordon moved to 12th with 30 to go. He remained there until Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact brought out a caution with 11 laps to go. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 4th place with 6 to go. He held the spot and posted his 7th top-10 finish in the last 8 races.

“It was a really solid top-five finish there. I’m really proud of that. That was not easy. Track position meant so much and we had it and then we lost it and it was nice to get it back there at the end and get a decent restart and finish fourth.”

Jeff Gordon led 47 laps at Talladega Superspeedway, but lost track position after a late race pit road penalty and wound up spinning on the final lap. His 31st place finish was his 3rd sub-30th place finish of the season. At the front of the field, Dale Earnhardt Jr scored his first win of the season to qualify for the Chase for the Championship. Gordon posted his 559th career lead lap finish, which moved him ahead of Mark Martin for the most lead lap finishes in NASCAR history.

Gordon started on the pole and led the first 3 laps before moving to the higher line. He got shuffled back to 6th place by lap 5. He regrouped and moved to 2nd behind Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 15. One lap later he pulled to the inside to regain the top spot. The first caution waved on lap 19 when Brian Scott spun and collected Michael Waltrip in turn 1. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and held the top spot. On the restart, Jimmie Johnson gave Gordon a drafting push on the outside line to keep the race lead. The next caution waved on lap 47 when Trevor Bayne spun on the backstretch and collected a dozen cars in the melee including Joey Logano, David Ragan, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson, Landon Cassill, Greg Biffle, and Danica Patrick. The race was red-flagged for 10 minutes to allow for track cleanup. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for four tires. He restarted in 5th place on lap 52. He slipped to 7th in the middle line prior to a debris caution on lap 56. On the restart, he moved to the inside line and drafted up to 2nd place behind race leader Jimmie Johnson on lap 62. However, he had dropped to 10th in the draft by lap 68. He hooked up with Tony Stewart in a draft to move to 7th place on lap 85.

On lap 90, he moved to the outside line behind Stewart and advanced to 5th. The next caution came on lap 92 for Brendan Gaughan’s wall contact. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting pit road with the lead after accelerating from the first pit box. Johnson took the lead on lap 98 with help from Dale Earnhardt Jr. He slipped to 8th as the outside line powered past. On lap 101, he moved to the middle line and drafted up to 4th place behind Earnhardt Jr. Drafting help from Carl Edwards thrust Gordon to 2nd place on lap 108. He re-assumed the race lead on lap 112 with a move around Earnhardt Jr. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 115. Gordon held the lead through pit stops and led until 65 to go when Earnhardt Jr took the lead with drafting help from Brad Keselowski. After fading to 12th place, he regrouped and locked into a draft with Johnson on the outside line. He moved to 7th place with 55 laps to go, and ran 4th two laps later. With 50 to go, he ran in 4th in a single line behind Earnhardt Jr, Tony Stewart, and Ryan Blaney. However, he was shuffled out of line and dropped to 17th with 45 laps to go. He then locked into a draft with Sam Hornish and moved up to 11th with 40 to go. Gordon re-entered the top-10 behind Johnson with 33 to go. Gordon came to pit road with 32 to go just prior to a caution for Austin Dillon’s mishap in the tri-oval. However, Gordon received a speeding penalty for too fast entering pit road.

Gordon restarted in 31st place with 26 laps to go. He used the middle line to his advantage and moved to 22nd within a lap of the restart. With 20 to go, he ran in 17th place on the inside line. The field eventually ran in a single line with Gordon in 23rd place with 15 to go. On the final lap, he spun exiting turn 2 and finished in 31st place. Gordon has just 1 top-10 finish in the last 8 races at Talladega.

JG’s comments:
“You have to get to pit road without locking the tires up or speeding. I thought I was plenty conservative there, but the tires are pretty worn out and I just carried too much speed to pit road. I kind of locked the tires up and I was speeding, I couldn’t get the car slowed down. We had an awesome car. We got shuffled back there a little bit. Hats off to Dale Jr and that whole team, and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports. We had amazing cars this weekend. But Dale Jr, you could tell, he was driving super aggressive and you knew he wanted to win this race bad. I certainly know all the fans are enjoying the show, they love to see Dale Jr win this race. But, after that [pit road] issue on my part, we were just in the back trying to make our way to the front. We did a pretty good job of making some spots up. We were going to kind of wait and see what happened on that last lap. Then they started wrecking, We avoided one of them, but we couldn’t avoid the second one.”
