Jeff Gordon’s arduous season took another downward turn with an early crash at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon was collected when Bobby Labonte spun in the early going. He fell to 16th in the series points standings.

Gordon started 29th and moved to 23rd by lap 5. However, he had nowhere to go when Labonte spun in turn 1 on lap 6. Gordon hit Labonte’s car and then bounced off the retaining wall. The #24 Chevrolet was too damaged to continue and garage repairs were needed. Gordon spent nearly 2 hours in the garage and returned after the halfway point to try and gain a few spots. He pulled behind the wall after moving up to 39th place. On the day, Gordon ran 52 laps — the fewest laps he’s run in a NASCAR race since Dover in June 2005.

Turning point
Friday. Poor qualifying effort put him deep in the field at the start of the race.

JG’s comments

“Bobby Labonte just lost it over there in Turn 2. He just did one of those slow spins where I couldn’t tell which direction he was going to go, so I had to guess and I guessed the wrong way. I didn’t really have anywhere to go. But I just can’t believe the way this season is going for us. It seems like we can run all day long when we can’t get the car right but when we finally get the car right, something like this happens. At Charlotte, I thought our car was awesome and I was really pleased with the way the car took off right there. We were really going to march up through the field. It’s unfortunate. This team just continues to have to face adversity and I appreciate how strong they are during it, but I just wish we didn’t all have to be tested quite this much.”

WOULD YOU SAY THE TRACK IS SURPRISINGLY SLICK?

“It’s not surprising because I expected it. When you have these fast practices in the mornings and then it loses a little grip in the next practice, you know when the sun comes out on race days it’s going to be pretty slick. So, I just wasn’t surprised.”

TELL US WHAT HAPPENED: “Bobby Labonte lost it off of turn two in front of me. It was just such a slow spin that I didn’t know which way he was going to go, so I had to guess. I tried to go around him on the outside and that was not the right way. I don’t know if I would have missed him even if I went to the inside. It’s unfortunate this season we are having is just unbelievable to me. We are at times struggling to get the speed then when we get the speed we struggle to finish because of stuff like this. I thought we were being tested last year, boy we are really being tested this year. Nobody has more fight in them than this team.”

HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE FRUSTRATION OF BEING INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT THIS EARLY IN A RACE?

“It’s not like we have any choice. You have to just deal with it and move on. You feel for the guys that are working so hard. There are some guys that are doing their job perfectly and things are out of their control and they don’t deserve this. There are other guys that, like myself, we contribute to being back there starting 29th. That is something we have to do better. I was really happy with the way the car was running. I’m happy with the way this team is sticking together, but boy I tell you these moments when they add up they really can be frustrating. That is the thing we have to work through the most. We are a great organization, a great team and we can rebound, it’s just we have to get the finishes.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LUCK?

“For years I’ve always said I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck that you make it. Just in that instance right there I call that being at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I also know that we contribute to where we started. We started back there and we were moving forward which I’m proud of, but the fact that we are back there. I put as much blame on myself. I really struggled this weekend when we went into qualifying trim. I’ve struggled all year. Shoot, the last two years with qualifying and I don’t know what it is, but we have to get it better. Starting back there you are only putting yourself into those positions to have those kinds of things happen.”

HOW MUCH IS THIS TESTING YOUR PATIENCE?

“I’m a pretty patient person, but it’s testing my frustration level and my confidence that is the biggest thing. We all know how big confidence is in this sport, any sport really. I don’t want to see the team get down and I don’t want to see myself get down. I have a lot of fight in me and so does this team. I’m looking forward to going to Sonoma.”

June 9, 2013 by admin 5933Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2013%2F06%2F09%2Fjeff-gordon-party-in-the-poconos-400-in-car-audio-2013%2FPocono+In-Car+Audio2013-06-09+21%3A34%3A09adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5933

Jimmie Johnson dominated the Pocono 400 after leading 128 of the 160 laps in the event. Johnson scored his 3rd win at Pocono and the 63rd of his career. Jeff Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the day and finished in 12th place.

Gordon started 11th and fell to 16th within two laps. He gained one spot back by lap 10 to move into 15th place while battling handling issues. However, as the green flag run progressed, he dropped to 17th while complaining of a lack of rear grip. Gordon ran in 18th place following a green flag pit stop on lap 28. He slowly made headway and took 17th from Mark Martin on lap 35. The next green flag stop came on lap 57 and Gordon moved up to 14th place. The first caution waved on lap 65 for debris on the track. The caution allowed Gordon to make up the 35 second gap that he grown between race leader Jimmie Johnson and the #24 car. Gordon gained three spots by changing two tires and restarted 12th on lap 70.

On the restart, Gordon dropped to 17th in turn 1 and was forced to battle for lost positions. He moved to 14th by lap 90 while battling a loose handling condition. He came to pit road on lap 100 for a green flag pit stop and returned to the race in 15th place. He moved to 14th on lap 122 when Ryan Newman came to pit road. A debris caution on lap 124 brought the field to pit road for fuel and tires. Gordon gained 4 spots on pit road and moved to 11th place for the restart with 31 laps to go. He fell to 15th within 2 laps of the restart. A caution for Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya’s spin came with 28 laps to go. Gordon cautiously went low on the track to avoid the spinning cars. He stayed out on the track during the caution and restarted in 12th place.

After Brad Keselowski got loose in the tunnel turn with 23 to go, Gordon went low and moved into the top-10 for the first time. One lap later the caution waved for Dave Blaney’s spin. Gordon restarted 9th with 19 laps to go, but lost two spots just after the restart. A caution for AJ Allmendinger’s cut tire slowed the field with 13 laps to go. Gordon slipped to 12th on the restart before a caution for Blaney’s wall contact with 7 to go. The restart came with 4 laps to go and Gordon finished the day in 12th place. He remained 11th in the series standings — 2 points outside the top-10.

Turning point
A caution flag with 35 laps to go allowed Gordon to make up positions on pit road. He gained 4 spots to put him in position for a top-10 finish.

Dover In-Car Audio

June 2, 2013 by admin 5900Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2013%2F06%2F02%2Fjeff-gordon-fedex-400-dover-in-car-audio-2013-nascar%2FDover+In-Car+Audio2013-06-03+02%3A25%3A51adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5900

Tony Stewart won his first race of the 2013 season after passing Juan Pablo Montoya with 3 laps to go. Jeff Gordon might have been able to run down the top-2 with a few extra laps, but came in 3rd after a pit gamble paid off. It was Gordon’s second consecutive top-5 finish and the 301st of his career — tying him with David Pearson in career top-5’s. The finish propelled Gordon up to 11th in the series standings.

Gordon started 20th and gained 4 spots in the first 20 laps. He moved to 15th on lap 30 while complaining about handling issues. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 73. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 79 with Gordon in 14th place. He pitted for tires and restarted in 13th place on lap 85. However, Gordon faded on the restart and ran 17th on lap 90. As the air pressures came up in the tires, Gordon gained back spots and ran 15th at the 100-lap mark. The handling fell off on the longer run and Gordon fell to 17th on lap 120. The second debris caution brought pit stops on lap 127. He gained 2 spots on pit road and another 2 on the track to run 13th on lap 150. The next caution waved for Matt Kenseth’s blown engine on lap 160. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 12th place.

Gordon moved to 11th after the halfway mark, but dropped to 12th when Tony Stewart went by on lap 220. Following a green flag pit stop on lap 238, Gordon ran in 15th place in danger of going a lap down. He moved to 14th prior to a caution on lap 280 for Martin Truex’s engine. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 13th place. Gordon ran 14th at lap 300 when the caution waved for Ryan Newman and David Gilliland’s wreck on the backstretch. Gordon restarted 14th on lap 306 and dropped to 15th by lap 310. Kasey Kahne’s spin and subsequent wall contact brought out the caution on lap 317. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 2nd place — the high water mark of his day.

On the restart, Gordon fell to 4th within one lap. However, on the long green flag run, Gordon needed to stop one more time for fuel. He received a much-needed break with 24 laps to go when Denny Hamlin cut a tire and hit the wall. The crew changed four tires and Gordon restarted 7th with 20 to go. He took 6th from Brad Keselowski with 17 to go and entered the top-5 when Jimmie Johnson was penalized for jumping the restart. Gordon took 3rd from Kyle Busch with 13 to go and posted his second straight top-5 finish at Dover.

Turning point
Crew chief Alan Gustafson kept Gordon on the track during a caution period on lap 317. That allowed him to move from 14th to 2nd. A well-timed caution flag with 24 laps to go clinched a top-5 finish.

JG’s comments
“We needed some things to go our way and that’s something that’s been hit or miss for us this year. Finally things went our way. We made a call to stay out, which obviously paid off and gave us some good track position. The car drove pretty good up front there. We needed a caution. You hate to see what happened to Denny, but it certainly paid off for us. Then we had a car with 4 tires that really took off. I was able to get by Kyle, but it started getting really loose on me as I caught the other two. All I could do was watch at that point. We almost got Montoya on the last lap, but it almost cost us another position. It’s a great top-3.”

“It was a fantastic finish for us. We battled hard all day long in 13th/14th — I think we got up to maybe 10th at one time. It’s frustrating when you think that you have a better car than that. You’re trying to make adjustments on the pit stops and play the right tire strategy, but you’re just not making any ground up. We just got fortunate there where we only had a few laps on the tires and we decided to stay out. Right away on the restart I knew that clean air made a huge difference. We were able to stay up there in 3rd or 4th for that entire run. We knew we needed the caution to come out. You hate to see it happen the way it did. But it paid off for us to be able to come in and get four tires and have a good restart there to get 3rd.”

IS THIS A TURNING POINT FOR YOUR SEASON?

“It’s certainly a great feeling. We’ve been running good. We just have had some things happen to us. Kind of like last year some were self-inflicted and some things were out of our hands. We just have to fight. We fought hard today. This is a tough place because it’s hot and slick. It wasn’t an easy race and this team just never gave up. That’s what got us in the Chase last year. That’s what’s going to get us in there this year. It’s so hard. Everytime we have a finish like we did at Darlington or a finish like today or even a good run at Charlotte, it’s just never over until it’s over. We just can’t ever seem to get momentum. All I can tell you is that our pit crew has definitely improved. We made a little change there and it’s paying off for us. Our cars have improved so that always makes life a little easier. Now I just have to make sure I don’t make any mistakes. I think Alan will probably second that. We just have to be really solid and get the results that we’re capable of getting. Today was a great race for us just because we were sitting there 12th, 13th, 14th. We stay out and all of a sudden here we are 3rd. So that’s a great lesson for us somewhere when we go to other tracks as well.”

May 27, 2013 by admin 5874Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2013%2F05%2F27%2Fjeff-gordon-charlotte-coca-cola-600-in-car-audio-2013%2FCoca+Cola+600+In-Car+Audio2013-05-27+16%3A56%3A58adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5874

As the day became night during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, it appeared that Jeff Gordon’s #24 car was on its way to a top-5 finish. However, a pit stop and ill-timed caution flag trapped Gordon a lap down. He was later collected in a multi-car wreck and finished 35th — his 3rd DNF of the season. The restart came on lap 130 as dusk descended over the track. Gordon moved into the top-10 prior to a round of green flag pit stops on lap 176. He took 9th from Kevin Harvick on lap 194 and ran 8th at the halfway point of the race. Green flag stops came on lap 222 with Gordon holding 8th place. He took 7th from Carl Edwards on lap 233 before a debris caution slowed the field on lap 242. Gordon entered the top-5 with a move around Denny Hamlin on lap 254 and took 4th when Kyle Busch’s engine expired. The caution waved on lap 258 for a multi-car incident after Dale Earnhardt Jr, Greg Biffle, and Dave Blaney made wall contact. Gordon scraped the wall and came to pit road for two tires. He restarted in 4th place and closed in on Kurt Busch for 3rd as his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne took the race lead. However, he was unable to make headway and dropped to 5th behind Martin Truex on lap 295. He came to pit road on lap 303 just as a debris caution waved. Gordon was trapped a lap down and opted to come back in for left side tires.

Gordon restarted in 15th place with 90 laps to go. He fell to 16th prior to a debris caution with 88 to go. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 19th just before a crash involving Brad Keselowski and Danica Patrick. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 19th place. Just after the restart, Gordon was involved in a multi-car wreck in turn 1 that ended his night with a DNF.

Turning point
Gordon came to pit road on lap 303 just as the yellow flag came out. By stopping, he was trapped a lap down and was later collected in a wreck racing backmarkers in the middle of the pack.

 JG’s comments
“We were a victim of the caution coming out when we were on pit road. We shouldn’t have stopped in the box to do that pit stop and we would have still been on the lead lap. Instead, we were racing three-wide. That’s what’s going to happen. I mean we were just going for the Lucky Dog you know, and you’ve got to be real aggressive back there. I got beat on the restart before that with (Marcos) Ambrose and messed that one up; so I just hate we were even back there.I loved the patriotic colors on our car this weekend and it’s just a shame we were even back there. We couldn’t win. Kasey (Kahne) is unbelievable. But we had a Top 5 car.”

Jimmie Johnson claimed his fourth career win in the NASCAR All Star Race, breaking a tie with Jeff Gordon and the late Dale Earnhardt for the most all-time.

Gordon started 10th and moved to 9th prior to a caution flag for rain on lap 8. The race was red flagged for heavier rain on lap 12. After nearly a one-hour delay, racing resumed just after 10:30/eastern time. Gordon moved to 7th at the end of the first 20-lap segment. At the start of Segment 2, Gordon dropped to 11th on the inside line. The next caution waved for Mark Martin’s spin on lap 25. He came to pit road for tires and restarted in 17th place on lap 28. The newer tires helped Gordon move to 13th on lap 33. He ran 11th at the end of the second segment. In the third segment, Gordon moved up to 10th on lap 51. However, he fell from 10th to 15th after the mandatory pit stop prior to the final 10-lap segment. He came across the line in 12th. Gordon has 0 top-10 finishes in the last 7 All-Star events

Darlington In-Car Audio

May 11, 2013 by admin 58271 Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2013%2F05%2F11%2Fjeff-gordon-bojangles-southern-500-darlington-in-car-audio-2013%2FDarlington+In-Car+Audio2013-05-12+03%3A35%3A42adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D5827

Jeff Gordon scored the 300th top-5 finish in his 700th career start. Gordon led 16 laps in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, but was unable to gain track position late in the event to challenge for the win.

Gordon started 8th and moved to 6th by the end of lap 4. He dropped to 7th on lap 14 when Matt Kenseth went by. Gordon battled a tight handling condition and fell back to 8th on lap 20. Gordon moved back into 7th place after getting around Martin Truex on lap 45. Gordon came in for a green flag pit stop on lap 53 and returned to the race in 9th place. He moved to 8th prior to the next green flag stop on lap 103. Gordon ran 9th when a debris caution slowed the field on lap 124. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting 8th on lap 129. He advanced two spots shortly after the restart and ran 6th on lap 140. Gordon took 5th from Kurt Busch on lap 151. Following a pit stop, Gordon assumed the lead for 15 laps before Kyle Busch took the top spot on lap 205.

Gordon dropped to 5th prior to a round of green flag pit stops. The second caution waved with 66 laps to go when Regan Smith spun. Gordon restarted 6th with 59 to go and moved to 5th prior to Casey Mears’ crash two laps later. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 4th place. On the restart, Gordon fell to 7th after Matt Kenseth spun his tires in front of him. A caution for Josh Wise’s crash slowed the field with 39 to go. Pit stops ensued and Gordon restarted 6th with 35 to go. The next caution waved when Kasey Kahne crashed in turn 1. Gordon moved up to 4th for the restart with 30 to go. He closed in on Denny Hamlin for 3rd but was unable to make headway and finished 4th.

The 4th place effort was Gordon’s 300th career top-5 finish. He became the 2nd youngest driver in NASCAR history to reach the milestone.

Turning point
Track position hindered Gordon’s shot at a victory, but he scored a much-needed top-5 finish — just his second top-5 of the season.

JG’s comments
“I was excited that Darlington was going to be the 700th start. This team was ready to go out there and do battle. That’s what it takes at this tough race track. I’m really proud of this team. I thought Alan called a great race. We made the right adjustments at the right time and got good track position with tires at the end. So, we needed track position. I thought our car was actually pretty fast there at the end. We just couldn’t quite get it. We were always balancing between tight and loose. Right there at the end was about the best the car had been. It took off really good, but it started getting tight on me. Then Jimmie started catching us. I think that’s about the best we could have asked for, but you always want to get out there in clean traffic and see what it will do.”

Jeff-Gordon-Talladega-2013 (4)
Day became night at Talladega Superspeedway as the Aaron’s 499 finished more than 7 hours after it began due to a lengthy rain delay. David Ragan and David Gilliland posted a 1-2 finish for Front Row Motorsports after a green/white/checkered restart where they drafted past Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards at the front of the field. Jeff Gordon was involved in two separate incidents and came home with a hard fought 11th place effort.

Gordon started 9th in the Imron Elite Chevrolet and dropped out of the top-20 by lap 5 on the inside line. As is the nature of racing at Talladega, Gordon drafted back into the top-10 by lap 11. He moved to the outside line and drafted with Casey Mears up to 7th place. By lap 18, Gordon led the outside line and moved into the top-5. He ran 4th when the first caution waved on lap 21 for Trevor Bayne’s engine. Gordon came to pit road for a 2-tire change and restarted in 3rd place. He fell to 8th by lap 40. Three laps later, he sustained front end damage as he was caught in the middle of a multi-car wreck in turn 1. Kasey Kahne was turned into the wall and Gordon hit the front of Greg Biffle’s car in the ensuing melee that collected more than 10 cars.

Following repairs to the front fenders on pit road, Gordon restarted in 32nd on lap 52. He ran at the rear of the field while battling a toe-in problem. He drafted with Landon Cassill as the pair ran nearly a half minute behind the leaders. Gordon stayed out to lead during a cycle of green flag pit stops. The lead pack went by Gordon on lap 102 to put him a lap down. A caution for rain on lap 123 found Gordon in 28th place, one lap down. The intensity of the rain picked up and the event was red flagged.

After a three-hour delay, the race resumed at 7pm/eastern time. Gordon immediately went to his pit stall for additional repairs on the car. Gordon restarted in 29th place (1 lap down) with 56 laps to go. He moved to 28th after Joey Logano pulled behind the wall but was unable to keep pace with the lead draft. Following the final green flag pit stop, Gordon ran in 25th place. A caution for Michael McDowell’s wall contact with 14 to go brought out the caution. Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap. He restarted 25th with 10 laps to go. He moved to 24th and was collected in a multi-car wreck in turn 3 with 6 laps to go. Gordon spun sideways on the apron and continued on to cross the line in 16th place. Gordon came to pit road to clear the grass from the front of the car. He restarted 15th for the green/white/checkered finish and moved into 11th for the finish. Gordon moved up to a tie for 13th in the series standings.

Turning point
Gordon had nowhere to go when a multi-car wreck began in front of him on lap 43. The front of the car was damaged, which impacted the handling during the event.

 JG’s comments
“I thought we got lucky in that first accident. We were kind of squeezed but we made it through. But the damage was a little bit more severe than we anticipated. I also had the toe knocked out so the speed or the handling wasn’t there in the car.”

Kevin Harvick came on late and scored his first victory of the 2013 season under the lights at Richmond International Raceway. Juan Pablo Montoya appeared to be cruising to his first win since 2010, but a late race caution flag brought pit strategy into play.

Jeff Gordon struggled with handling in the first half of the event before rallying back to 11th place at the finish. Gordon started 3rd and moved into the runner-up spot by the end of lap 1. He fell back to 3rd when Clint Bowyer went by on lap 14. Gordon battled handling issues and dropped to 5th on lap 20. He continued losing spots and ran 10th on lap 25. Gordon dropped to 12th prior to the first caution on lap 42. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 14th place. After the restart, Gordon continued his backslide through the field and ran 18th on lap 55. He fell out of the top-20 on lap 62. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran in 25th place in danger of going a lap down. A caution for Marcos Ambrose on lap 110 slowed the field and brought pit stops. Adjustments were made on the #24 car and Gordon restarted 24th on lap 115. He advanced to 21st prior to the next caution flag on lap 145. On the restart, Gordon moved from 23rd to 21st and then re-entered the top-20 on lap 158. A caution on lap 159 for Brad Keselowski’s wall contact brought Gordon back to pit road for tires. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 18th place.

Gordon moved up to 16th before a caution on lap 232. He held the spot through a round of pit stops. Gordon took 15th from AJ Allmendinger on lap 274 and took 13th place prior to a caution on lap 292. A caution on lap 307 brought Gordon back to pit road for tires and he restarted in 13th place. With 74 laps to go, Gordon moved into the top-10 when Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson made contact and spun in turn 2. Gordon came to pit road and restarted in 14th place. After the restart he dropped to 18th place, but gained two spots after Mark Martin and Kasey Kahne wrecked on the backstretch. Gordon stayed out during the caution period and moved up to 9th for the restart with 57 laps to go. He advanced to 8th when Kurt Busch spun Martin Truex with 53 to go. Gordon fell to 9th with 22 laps to go, and slipped to 10th with 17 to go. His fade continued as Jamie McMurray dropped him out of the top-10 with 15 laps to go. Gordon was 12th when Brian Vickers brought out a caution with 5 laps to go. He came to pit road for tires and restarted in 14th place for the green/white/checkered finish. He gained 3 spots in the final 2 laps to post an 11th place finish. Gordon has just 1 top-10 finish in the last 7 races. However, he moved up to 14th in the series standings.

Turning point
Handling issues plagued Gordon for the balance of the event. He seemed to win the track position game late in the event and ran as high as 7th with 50 laps to go, but was unable to hold the spot.

Matt Kenseth dominated the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway en route to his second victory of the 2013 season. Kenseth led 163 of the 267 laps in the event. Jeff Gordon struggled with track position for the balance of the day and posted a 13th place finish after starting at the rear of the field.

Gordon officially started 43rd, but moved to 39th at the drop of the green flag. He moved up to 38th by the first caution on lap 5 for Kyle Busch’s spin. Gordon stayed on the track and moved up to 32nd place after the restart. He ran 30th on lap 15 and advanced to 26th by lap 25. Gordon gained three more spots in the next 10 laps to move into 23rd place. The next caution waved on lap 38 for Dave Blaney’s wall contact. Following a pit stop, Gordon moved to 15th place. He ran 14th when a debris caution slowed the field on lap 72. Gordon opted for four tires and restarted in 18th place. He dropped out of the top-20 shortly after the restart. He regrouped and took 20th from Joey Logano on lap 82, and then moved into 18th place on lap 85 prior to a caution period for Elliott Sadler’s wreck. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran in 15th place, more than 10 seconds behind race leader Matt Kenseth. The next caution waved on lap 103 for Kyle Busch’s second spin of the day, which collected Joey Logano in a hard crash in turn 3. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and restarted 18th on lap 115. He dropped to 20th shortly after the restart, but moved around Aric Almirola and Brian Vickers to take 18th place on lap 122.

At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 16th place. He came to pit road under green on lap 163 and returned in 21st place. The next caution waved on lap 172 for Vickers’ wall contact. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 7th place. He dropped to 10th prior to the next caution for a multi-car incident involving Sam Hornish, Marcos Ambrose, and Casey Mears. Gordon fell to 14th shortly after the restart on lap 186. He moved up to 13th on lap 190. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 217, just as the caution waved for debris on the track. Gordon was trapped a lap down but took the wave around to get back on the lead lap. He restarted 22nd on lap 224 and moved up to 19th with 40 laps to go. Ten laps later he moved into 16th place and closed on Jeff Burton for the top-15. With 20 laps to go, Gordon closed on Kurt Busch for the 14th position. After passing Busch, he set his sights on Ryan Newman and took 13th place with 4 laps to go.

Turning point
Gordon was running 13th when he came to pit road on lap 217. However, an ill-timed caution flag put him a lap down and took him out of contention of a possible top-10 finish.

Texas In-Car Audio

It looked as if Jeff Gordon was on his way to his 300th career top-5 finish. He led 15 laps at Texas Motor Speedway, but was running behind Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr with under 30 laps to go. But he suddenly slowed with a tire problem and subsequently pulled behind the wall with a burnt wheel hub. Gordon posted a 38th place finish — his lowest since the 2012 Daytona 500.

Gordon started 8th and moved into the top-5 by lap 30. A debris caution on lap 35 brought the field to pit road. Gordon gained a spot on pit road and restarted in 4th place. He dropped a spot prior to the second caution for Ricky Stenhouse’s spin in turn 3. As the race neared the 70-lap mark, Gordon settled into 4th place. He took 3rd from Martin Truex just before the next caution waved on lap 81, which brought the field to pit road. Gordon gained a spot in the pits and restarted on the outside of the front row. However, the inside line powered by and Gordon dropped to 5th on lap 88. He regrouped and took 4th from Brian Vickers on lap 92 and moved around Matt Kenseth for 3rd on lap 98. After a round of green flag pit stops on lap 130, Gordon ran in 2nd place.

Gordon eventually tracked down Kyle Busch and took the race lead on lap 188. He made a green flag pit stop on lap 200 and returned to the race in 3rd place behind Martin Truex and Busch. He took the runner-up spot from Busch on lap 217. A caution at lap 222 brought the field to pit road with Gordon exiting in 2nd place. He fell to 3rd after the restart, but again began running down the leaders on the longer run. A caution with 54 to go came during a green flag pit stop sequence. Gordon had not yet pitted prior to the caution and restarted in 3rd place. However, the wheel issue forced him to the slow with 28 laps to go. It was his 2nd DNF in 7 races this season. He dropped to 15th in the series standings.

 Turning point
A flat tire with 28 laps to go forced Gordon to slow on the track. Following the pit stop, he went to the garage with a wheel hub problem.
