May 2 – – The scene was all too familiar to Jeff Gordon fans. Their driver was leading the race in the closing stages — and pulling away. However, a late race caution flag at Richmond International Raceway wiped out Gordon’s lead in the Crown Royal 400, and he eventually lost the top spot with just five laps remaining.

Gordon started 4th and passed Jimmie Johnson for the 3rd position on lap 2. Three laps later he took the runner-up spot from David Reutimann. He held the second position until the first caution on lap 45 for Joe Nemechek’s cut tire. The field came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 4th place after swinging wide to exit his stall because of Denny Hamlin directly in front. On the restart, Gordon moved to the outside line and took 3rd from Jamie McMurray. He took 2nd from Kevin Harvick on lap 62 but ran distantly behind race leader Kyle Busch on the long green flag run. Gordon inherited the lead when Busch came to pit road on lap 143. Two laps later, Gordon came to pit road for tires and gave up the top spot. When the stops cycled through, Busch remained as the leader with Gordon in 2nd place. A debris caution on lap 154 brought the leaders back to pit road with just 9 cars on the lead lap. Gordon exited in 3rd place after a four-tire change.

On the restart, Gordon immediately took the 2nd position from Clint Bowyer on lap 162. Debris on the backstretch necessitated a caution flag on lap 171. Pit stops followed and Gordon exited in 3rd behind Ryan Newman who took two tires, and Busch. On the restart, Gordon dove low to pass Newman and ran side by side with Busch for the race lead. Busch held the top spot, and Jeff Burton took the 2nd position from Gordon on lap 180. Gordon passed Busch for 2nd on lap 240 and closed to less than 1.5 seconds behind Burton for the race lead. On lap 250, Gordon got a run off turn four and took the lead from Burton. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 268 and held the lead through the cycle. Gordon continued to lead the race and came to pit road for a green flag pit stop with 37 laps to go. The complexion of the race changed with 34 laps to go when Elliott Sadler cut a tire and spun on the frontstretch.

Gordon stayed out and started on the inside with 23 laps to go. He pulled away to the lead, but David Ragan’s spin with 21 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon led the field to the restart with 15 to go, and hauled the mail into turn one to get the lead. With 11 to go, Sam Hornish destroyed his car on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon and Kyle Busch came to the restart with 5 laps to go. Busch took the lead on the outside line and Gordon washed up the track in turn three battling Kevin Harvick for the runner-up spot. Busch pulled away to win his first race of the season. With the runner-up finish, Gordon moved from 10th to 6th in the series points standings.

April 25 – – Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson did their best to throw ice water on what many viewed as a simmering fued after the race at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, that ice water quickly heated back to a boil as the drivers found each other on the track at an inopportune time at Talladega Superspeedway. Gordon was forced onto the apron with 7 laps to go by Johnson, and was then swept up in a wreck. Gordon finished the event in 22nd place. “The 48 is testing my patience,” said Gordon, in reference to his teammate. “It takes a lot to make me mad and I am pissed right now.” At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jamie McMurray in the tri-oval on the final lap to win his 12th career race.

Gordon started 5th and stayed on the inside line at the outset. He fell back to 27th place by lap 5 and ran in a second draft behind the leaders. On lap 7, he radioed that the lead pack was beginning to get strung out, and he would try and re-join the fray. Two laps later he climbed to the 19th position in the lead draft. He climbed into the top-10 on lap 15 behind a draft from Jimmie Johnson. Gordon slipped back to 14th before the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon restarted 13th after taking four tires. On lap 26, he hooked up in a tight draft with Jeff Burton and moved to 8th place. He stayed behind Burton and moved up to 5th on lap 27, before the outside line powered past. Gordon dropped to 22nd on lap 33 after choosing the wrong drafting line. He remained in the second draft for the next 15 laps.

On lap 48, Gordon worked with Tony Stewart in the second draft back in 24th position. The pair worked out a drafting arrangement to move up in the running order. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 65. After the stops cycled through, he ran in 20th place on the low line before drafting back into the top-10. The caution waved on lap 76 when Michael Waltrip hit the wall off turn four. Denny Hamlin spun toward the infield grass in the chain reaction incident. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for left side tires and exited pit road in 3rd place. He took the lead of the race on lap 80 and ran in a tight draft with Elliott Sadler. Two laps later, Sadler was pushed into the lead by Kurt Busch. The caution waved on lap 84 after Johnny Sauter was turned sideways in the tri-oval. He bounced off Busch and Waltrip, while collecting Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard in the melee.

On the restart, Gordon pushed David Reutimann to the top spot. On lap 90, Gordon jumped to the high side to take the lead. However, his time at the front was short lived as the middle line powered past and pushed him out of the top-10 within seconds. Ten laps later he was in danger of losing the draft after he fell to 30th. Regan Smith’s blown engine on lap 100 brought the caution and allowed Gordon to make up the distance. Gordon spent the next 25 laps running in 24th with Mark Martin. With 60 to go, he hooked up with Martin and moved to 15th. Three laps later, he got a drafting push from Johnson to move into the top-5. However, he was hung in the middle line and lost positions. He fell back to 30th and ran there until green flag pit stops with 42 laps to go. Gordon changed two tires and ran 15th after the stops. With 30 laps to go, he moved to the front of the field for a single lap, before dropping back in the draft. With 12 laps to go, Bobby Labonte spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 17th place.

On the restart, Gordon worked with Mark Martin to move into the top-10. However, with 7 laps to go, Gordon moved low on the backstretch and was forced onto the apron by Jimmie Johnson’s late move. Gordon slipped back after cracking the throttle and was collected in a wreck on the frontstretch after Jeff Burton hit the wall and spun into Gordon’s path. The DuPont crew made repairs and Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap due to a wreck involving Johnson. Gordon was distantly behind the final battle for the lead as Harvick won in a photo finish. Gordon dropped to 10th in the series points standings, and trails Johnson by 193.

Intensity Ratchets Up Between Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon at Texas

April 19, 2010 by admin 2989Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2010%2F04%2F19%2Fintensity-ratchets-up-between-jimmie-johnson-jeff-gordon-at-texas%2FIntensity+Ratchets+Up+Between+Jimmie+Johnson%2C+Jeff+Gordon+at+Texas2010-04-20+03%3A49%3A12adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D2989

April 19 — Matt Kenseth seems to be off the hook as Jeff Gordon’s top object of ire as the four-time champion continues to come up short in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Instead, surprisingly it was Gordon’s teammate Jimmie Johnson who was responsible for irritating a focused Gordon the most during the running of Monday’s Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway, one eventually won by Denny Hamlin.

Johnson, long the guy tabbed at fault for snatching wins and championships from Gordon in the last decade, earned Gordon’s wrath Monday on lap 241 of 334 when the Hendrick Motorsports duo tangled in a battle for the lead off of turn four. Gordon, with a faster Chevrolet much of day, worked to Johnson’s bumper and then inside him before Johnson got a little loose.

Johnson appeared to chase his No. 48 down the track one lane, and two machines fabricated side-by-side in the same Charlotte shop made door-to-door contact. Johnson caught the worst of the contact as his left-front fender bent in and he eventually made a trip to pit road for a flat left-front tire.

Gordon, meanwhile, offered what turned out be his second-most aggressive over-the-radio thought of the day.

“Four time’s a little upset!” said Gordon in a mocking tone over his in-car radio feed after continuing on to the lead. “He just wants to be treated different than everybody else.”

Gordon’s greatest anger over the radio came when he offered a expletive-laced snap judgment of Tony Stewart’s driving moves after they were involved in the race-changing nine-car pileup with 16 laps to go. Gordon had led a race-high 124 laps and appeared to be sailing towards a victory before David Reutimann’s expired and flaming engine brought out a caution with 22 laps left.

Gordon restarted in eighth position after a relatively slow four-tire stop. As Hamlin and Kyle Busch got out ahead, Gordon, Stewart, Johnson and others were jumbled behind them, and after touching a couple of times, Gordon and Stewart went into the outside wall, triggering the big wreck.

“That f***** Stewart drove f****** into us when he knew the 48 was there!” Gordon shouted on his radio.

He immediately got out of his car and approached Stewart as he emerged, but Stewart took blame for the accident and they did not appear to be in conflict.

But the Johnson incident — one that both were specifically asked about after the race — revealed that Gordon’s fire to beat Johnson this season is burning as hot, if not hotter, than ever.

“He wasn’t fast enough and my car was just so good I could just get right to his bumper and he got loose,” said Gordon. “I guess he thought I was being too aggressive. I don’t know, he just drove into my door. It ended up costing him.”

Gordon, who has now gone 36 races without a win, noted that his extra aggressiveness in making the lap 241 pass correlated with his strong race car — a piece that led six separate times Monday.

“When you have a race car like that, you don’t have teammates and friends out there and (you) race hard,” Gordon said. “That is what Jimmie has had.”

Both Johnson and Gordon used the word “disappointed” to describe how each had raced one another, with Johnson attempting to settle the dispute from being the major story this week. He also cautioned about reading too much into in-car radio traffic.

“Don’t get the headline writers out saying trouble at HMS, because it’s really no big deal,” said Johnson. “And we all know from scanning during the race, there are a lot of colorful things said on that racetrack about teammates and other drivers and all that kind of stuff.”

That being said, the four-time and defending champion did acknowledge that this week he’d try to sort things out with Gordon, long a friend as well as co-car owner of the No. 48 car.

“We’ll get it taken care of at the shop and during the week, and come back to the next race and do it again,” Johnson said. “I think we are both pretty frustrated with how we have been racing each other.”

It was Johnson, just as in multiple races in the last few years, who finished the day ahead of Gordon after nearly chasing Hamlin down to steal the win in the closing laps. Johnson wound up 2nd, while Gordon’s name showed up in the results sheet at 32nd.

But just as he was after dominating in March at Las Vegas before Johnson slipped by for the win, Gordon also saw the bright side.

“I am just excited that we have something to race with all of these guys out here right now,” said Gordon.

Texas In Car Audio

April 19 – – There are few moral victories in racing, and rarely would a 31st place finish qualify in that category, but Jeff Gordon made a loud statement in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.  Gordon led 124 laps, took no prisoners while racing a teammate, and looked to be in sound position for his first victory in more than a year.  However, a late race wreck coming off turn four destroyed the National Guard Special Forces Chevrolet and left Gordon with his first DNF of the season.

Gordon started 12th and entered the top-10 on lap 21 with a pass on eventual winner Denny Hamlin. He steadily worked through traffic by passing Kurt Busch for 9th place on lap 40, and took 8th place from Kasey Kahne two laps later. He entered the top-5 for the first time on lap 48 by getting around Kyle Busch, and took 4th from Clint Bowyer on lap 55. An adjustment during a pit stop under caution on lap 77 moved Gordon up to 3rd in the running order. He dropped to 12th on lap 115 after pitting while others stayed on the track. On the restart, Gordon worked his way back toward the front of the field and gained six spots by lap 120. He re-entered the top-5 on lap 126 with a pass on Kurt Busch, and took the runner-up spot five laps later. He tracked down and passed Dale Earnhardt Jr for the race lead on lap 137. By lap 150, Gordon had extended to a 3-second lead. Gordon lost the lead during a pit stop sequence, but regained it from Earnhardt Jr on lap 182.

Gordon swapped the lead briefly with Jimmie Johnson with 100 laps to go. Gordon pulled up to the rear of Johnson’s car in turn four which loosened Johnson’s car to the point where he climbed the hill in the corner to save the car. As Gordon pulled low on the fronstretch, Johnson turned into the right side of Gordon’s car. The contact eventually resulted in a flat tire for Johnson and stirred ill-will by both drivers over the in-car radio. Gordon moved into the lead and maintained a comfortable distance as the laps wound down. However, David Reuitimann’s blown engine with 24 laps remaining slowed the field. Gordon opted for four tires and restarted in 8th place. He made his way to 7th on the inside of Tony Stewart coming off turn four with 17 laps to go. Stewart got loose and tried to save his car. He touched the right side of Gordon’s car, which further sent his car out of shape. Stewart then clipped the right rear of Gordon’s car sending him into the frontstretch wall. More than six other drivers were collected in the melee. Gordon exited his car and immediately went to Stewart’s wrecked car for an explanation. Stewart assumed blame for the wreck after viewing the replay. “It was my fault, I feel bad about doing something stupid like that,” Stewart said. “I didn’t plan on getting loose, but it is 100 percent my fault. It wasn’t (Jeff’s) fault, obviously. I got a chance to see it in the infield care center, it is definitely my fault. I apologize to all the teams and drivers that got caught up and their fans for it. We had a really good car there and just a shame that it happened let alone to some of your teammates like that.”

Phoenix In Car Audio

April 11 – – For the second consecutive race, Jeff Gordon had victory within his sights while lining up with the lead on a final green/white/checkered flag restart.  Unfortunately for Gordon, the ending at Phoenix International Raceway mirrored the disappointment of Martinsville Speedway.  However, this time around, there was no contact from behind. Rather, it was the driver’s error that opened the door for Ryan Newman to take the lead (and the victory) away with 2 laps to go.  Nevertheless, Gordon posted a runner-up finish and moved to 5th in the series points standings.

Gordon started 10th and moved around Carl Edwards on the opening lap to take a spot.  On lap 2, he passed Martin Truex and Marcos Ambrose to take 7th place.  Ten laps later he took over 6th from Dale Earnhardt Jr.  The first caution waved on lap 15 after Kurt Busch got loose entering turn one and took out Kasey Kahne on the outside.  Pit stops ensued with Gordon losing a spot and exiting in 7th place.   A lap after the restart, Jamie McMurray spun in turn three off the front bumper of Clint Bowyer.  Gordon restarted in 8th on lap 30 on the outside of Matt Kenseth.  He moved to 6th on lap 31 before AJ Allmendinger took a position.  On lap 39, Jimmie Johnson went by sending Gordon back to 8th before he regrouped and took 7th from Ryan Newman.  The third caution came on lap 56 after Brian Vickers wrecked in turn three. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 6th place.

When racing resumed, Gordon bided his time in 7th place behind Sam Hornish and AJ Allmendinger.  On lap 82, Gordon moved to the outside of Allmendinger and raced side by side with Dr. Lynne’s husband for a lap before taking 6th place.  Kenseth passed Gordon on lap 88 to take over 6th and send Gordon back to the 7th position.  He moved back into 6th on lap 110 after getting around Hornish.  On lap 133, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop just before Kurt Busch cut a tire.   The caution waved three laps later as the pit sequence fully cycled through.  Gordon fell to 8th due to the tight conditions on pit road and coming in slightly sideways to his stall.  He gained two spots on the restart and closed in on Kenseth for 5th on lap 155.  However, Gordon’s car tightened up and Kyle Busch took a spot on lap 161.  He moved into the top-5 on lap 188 after getting around Joey Logano.  A caution for Dave Blaney’s blown engine brought the lead lap cars to pit road.  Gordon lost six spots and restarted in 11th.  He dropped to 12th before rallying back into the top-10 with 165 laps to go.

With 107 to go, Gordon took 8th from Logano, and then passed Kenseth for 7th with 94 to go.  As the green flag run continued, he tracked down and passed Kevin Harvick for 6th.   A caution flag brought the leaders to pit road with 59 laps to go.  Gordon gained two positions and departed in 4th place.  On the restart, Gordon used the outside line to move up to 3rd but ran distantly behind Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson for the race lead.  As the laps wound down, he made some headway on catching Johnson for 2nd.  With four laps to go, Scott Riggs hit the wall to bring out the caution and set up a green/white/checkered finish.  The leaders came to pit road with Gordon opting for a two-tire change and departed pit road with the race lead.  On the restart, Newman powered on the inside past Gordon for the race lead after the leader spun the tires.

Martinsville Race Audio

March 29, 2010 by admin 2895Leave a Commenthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2010%2F03%2F29%2Fmartinsville-race-audio%2FMartinsville+Race+Audio2010-03-30+03%3A58%3A56adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D2895

March 29 – – If nothing else, Jeff Gordon is Mr. Consistency at Martinsville Speedway.  Gordon posted a 3rd place finish in the rain-delayed Goody’s 500 for his 11th straight top-five and 15th straight top-ten finish at the 1/2-mile track.  However, the ending of the Goody’s 500 was a disappointment as Gordon lost the race lead on a final green/white/checkered restart after Matt Kenseth drilled him from behind.  Gordon regrouped and knocked Kenseth up the track in turn three, but not before Denny Hamlin took the race lead and the victory.  “I didn’t get a great restart,” Gordon said.  “I saw (Kenseth) behind me.  He drove in the back of me so hard.  I made sure he wasn’t going to win the race after that.”

Gordon started 11th and gained five spots in the opening 10 laps.  He passed Jimmie Johnson and lap 25 to move into 6th, and entered the top-5 on lap 30.  He gained a spot during a pit stop sequence on lap 40, and quickly moved into the runner-up spot on lap 49.  Gordon tracked down and passed Jeff Burton for the race lead on lap 59.  He held the lead until Kurt Busch took the top spot on lap 140.  He dropped two spots on a pit stop sequence on lap 164 and slipped further back by lap 190 while battling handling issues in the corner.  However, the car eventually came to him and he moved back into the top-10 on lap 193.  Gordon’s forward charge continued as he took 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 204.  At the halfway point Gordon was running in 6th.  He remained there until lap 303 when Joey Logano took the position.  His forward charge commenced on lap 314 after a pit stop.  He passed Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson to re-enter the top-five, and then took 4th from Kyle Busch on lap 328.

Gordon struggled on restarts for most of the race and following a caution flag on lap 364, he dropped to 7th.  He regouped to take 6th on lap 390 before another caution on lap 421.  Pit stops followed and Gordon exited in 9th place.  With 70 laps to go, he moved into 7th place, and then took 6th from Martin Truex Jr.  He passed Matt Kenseth for 5th with 50 to go, and passed Clint Bowyer for 4th with 18 to go.  With 9 laps to go, Jeff Burton cut a tire and hit the wall, which allowed Gordon to move up to 3rd place.  Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch both elected to come to pit road under caution, which gave Gordon the race lead.  On the restart, he pulled away from Ryan Newman and looked to be on the way to his 83rd career victory.  However, Kyle Busch’s spin in turn four with 2 laps to go brought the caution flag.  Gordon was angered by the timing of the flag as he was less than 90 feet from taking the white flag — which would have automatically frozen the field and ended the event.

On the green/white/checkered restart, Kenseth slammed the rear of Gordon’s car and knocked him up the track in turn 1.  He raced side-by-side with Kenseth on the backstretch and clipped the rear of Kenseth’s Ford to send him up the track and make sure the Wisconsinite did not visit victory lane.  Hamlin dove low to take the race lead and the victory with his teammate Joey Logano in tow.  Gordon regrouped to hold off Ryan Newman to finish 3rd.  The finish allowed Gordon to move up to 7th in the series points standings.

March 22 – – Jeff Gordon’s day at Bristol Motor Speedway was an up and down affair characterized by handling issues in the mid-stages and a wreck with 150 laps to go.  Gordon’s unsatisfying 14th place finish leaves him 11th in points for the second straight week.  Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Tony Stewart with 7 laps to go and won his 50th career race.

Gordon qualified 5th, but started 3rd after Dave Blaney dropped to the rear of the field.  He settled into 4th after Jimmie Johnson used the high line to take the spot and eventually the race lead.  Gordon used the upper groove to take 3rd from polesitter Joey Logano on lap 8.  The first caution waved on lap 41 after Blaney stopped on the track.  The field came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 4th place.  He restarted in 6th after David Stremme and Brad Keselowski stayed out.  Gordon made quick work of Stremme on the outside line and got around Kurt Busch.  He took 2nd place from Keselowski on lap 49 and closed in on Johnson for the race lead.  The next caution waved for Clint Bowyer’s engine problem on lap 57.  Gordon held off Kurt Busch on the restart, but eventually ceded the runner-up spot on lap 81.  He fell to 6th by lap 115 while battling a tight handling condition.  A caution for Denny Hamlin’s wall contact on lap 117 brought the leaders to pit road.   Gordon departed in 5th place after gaining a spot.

Light rain enveloped the track on lap 125, which brought another caution period.  After nearly 20 minutes circling at reduced speed, the green flag waved.  Gordon dropped to 6th after Mark Martin passed on lap 150.  Keselowski went around Gordon on lap 164, and Jamie McMurray passed four laps later.  Gordon slipped to 10th on lap 170 after Martin Truex and Marcos Ambrose went by.  He fell out of the top-10 on lap 175 when Paul Menard moved around the DuPont Chevrolet.  The slide through the field continued as Gordon ran 17th on lap 195.   Gordon was back in 21st position when Kasey Kahne brought out a much needed caution on lap 205.  On the restart, Gordon moved from 21st to 17th by lap 220, and advanced to 14th on lap 230.  At the halfway point, Gordon had moved up to 12th as the tight handling condition he experienced earlier seems much improved.  Following a caution flag sequence for Kyle Busch’s cut tire, Gordon gained two positions on pit road.  With 200 laps to go, Gordon was running 9th behind Tony Stewart.  A caution for Regan Smith’s wall contact resulted in a caution flag.  Gordon left pit road in 10th place on lap 324.

On lap 341, Mark Martin slammed the wall off turn two after contact with Greg Biffle.  Martin then brought his car back into race traffic and made contact with the front of Gordon’s car, who was slammed in the rear by Marcos Ambrose.  Gordon elected to stay on the track running 11th due to rain in the area.  When the skies lightened, Gordon came to pit road for tires with 143 laps to go.  He restarted in 24th place before a caution flag for rain.  While the lead lap cars pitted, Gordon stayed on the track and moved to 2nd place.  The green flag waved with 90 to go and Gordon was unable to hold the inside line.  He dropped to 4th within a lap of the restart as Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson went by.  Less than 25 laps later, he slipped back to 10th place.  Gordon dropped out of the top-10 when Kyle Busch passed with to go.   He was running 14th when the caution waved for debris with 17 laps to go. He exited pit road in 16th for the final run to the finish.  Gordon moved up 2 spots to finish 14th.  At the front of the field, Johnson restarted 6th and moved to the lead around Tony Stewart with 7 laps to go.  Johnson pulled away to win his 50th career race and first ever at Bristol.

March 8 – – Kurt Busch captured the spring race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the second straight year.  Busch made a daring move on the penultimate restart to take the lead.  The race was not without controversy as Carl Edwards was parked by NASCAR after retaliating against Brad Keselowski for a bump early in the event.  Keselowski’s car flipped over on the frontstretch and pancaked the outside wall with the roof.

Jeff Gordon’s day was an exercise in frustration. Gordon started 5th and dropped a position at the outset to Kasey Kahne.  Robby Gordon crashed to bring out the first caution on lap 4.  He took a position from Mark Martin, and then took 4th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 15.  The second caution came on lap 35 for David Ragan’s cut tire and subsequent contact with the wall.  The leaders came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 5th place.  On the restart, Carl Edwards and Joey Logano hit the turn two wall after Brad Keselowski clipped Edwards at the bottom of the track.  Gordon moved up to 3rd on lap 65, before Kurt Busch took the spot on lap 67.  A debris caution on lap 77 brought the lead lap cars to pit road.  Gordon departed pit road in 3rd place after a sub-15 second stop.  On the restart, Gordon slipped back to 5th before rallying to take 4th on lap 89.  He ran in 3rd on lap 100, but dropped the spot to Kahne on lap 109.  Mark Martin’s spin on lap 115 brought the caution and the leaders to pit road.  Gordon restarted in 8th and moved to 5th by lap 125.  However, he dropped to 7th as Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson passed in the next four laps.  By lap 142, he was down to the 12th spot after struggling with loose handling.

Gordon pitted for tires and losing more positions.  He received a penalty for speeding on pit road, thus necessitating a pass-thru. Joey Logano’s cut tire on lap 160 brought out the caution and trapped Gordon two laps down.  He made up a lap by not pitting under the caution flag.  Gordon worked his way to 29th — the first car one lap down by lap 185.  Trouble struck Gordon on lap 203 when he slowed dramatically in turn one and came to pit road for a tire issue.  He ran the balance of the event a lap down before a wreck on the first green/white/checkered lap allowed him to get back on the lead lap.  Gordon lined up 19th for the second attempt at a green/white/checkered finish.  He gained one spot and finished the event in 18th.  Gordon moved into a tie for 11th in the series points standings.

The NASCAR series takes a week off before returning to the track at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 21.  Although Gordon has started the season with three finishes of 18th or worse in the first 4 races, they’ve run much better than the results indicate.  When you knock on the door long enough, eventually it opens… eventually.

February 28 – – Jeff Gordon led 218 of the 267 laps of the Shelby American at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but a late two-tire change cost him as Jimmie Johnson tracked him down and passed with 17 laps to go. Johnson claimed his second consecutive win.

Gordon started on the inside of the front row due to polesitter Kurt Busch opting for the outside. Gordon passed Busch for the lead exiting turn four and picked up the 5-point bonus for leading a lap. The first caution waved on lap 2 for an incident involving Kevin Conway. Gordon chose the outside line for the restart on lap 6 and pulled away from Busch. His lead ballooned to nearly 3 seconds on lap 25, and 7 seconds on lap 40. A caution for Mike Bliss’ crash on lap 46 erased Gordon’s lead and brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon held onto the lead through the round of pit stops.

Gordon opted for the outside on the restart and dropped to 2nd before a track issue forced a caution within one lap. He started on the outside of Greg Biffle on lap 57 and assumed the lead. He led until a caution on lap 85 for Sam Hornish’s spin. Gordon lost two spots on pit road and restarted in 3rd on lap 90. Shortly after the restart, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray crashed in turn three as Gordon moved to the runner-up position. On the restart, Gordon made a bid for the lead on the outside of Matt Kenseth and re-assumed the top spot on lap 100. Another track issue brought the caution out and the leaders to pit road. Gordon blundered by overshooting his stall and had to back-up on a fuel only stop. He exited pit road in the 3rd position. However, Gordon redeemed himself on the restart by regaining the lead on lap 114. After clinching the bonus for leading the most laps, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop with 106 laps to go and cycled through the sequence as the leader.

Gordon remained in the lead and came to pits for a green flag stops with 54 laps to go. Gordon’s lead was erased with 36 laps to go when Kevin Conway hit the turn two wall. The leaders came to pit road and Gordon opted for two tires. He departed with the lead, but was tracked down and passed by Jimmie Johnson with 17 laps to go. Kevin Harvick passed with 4 laps to go to put Gordon back in 3rd. Johnson pulled away to win his second straight race and 49th of his career. Gordon finished 3rd and moved up to 13th in the points standings — a gain of 9 positions. “Had more guys taken two tires, I think we could have got them,” Gordon said. “That’s what makes leading so tough sometimes. We fought them off as long as we could. We were awesome all day, the pit stops were awesome. I know Steve Letarte is beating himself up over the two-tires, but if some other guys took two…”

February 22 – – The In-N-Out fast food chain is one of the most popular stops for the NASCAR teams on visits to Southern California.  Unfortunately for Jeff Gordon, In-N-Out described his engine in the last 75 laps of the Auto Club 500 in Fontana, California.   Gordon was running 4th when his engine began missing.   He wound up finishing 20th in a race won by his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson.

Gordon started 28th and worked his way into the top-20 within four laps.  He steadily worked through traffic and ran 16th on lap 11.  Gordon took 12th from Jamie McMurray on lap 21, and entered the top-10 on lap 30 with a pass on Mark Martin.  Two laps later he climbed to 8th.  Gordon came to pit road on lap 39 for a green flag stop.  When stops cycled through, Gordon ran 6th on lap 44, but slipped to 8th just three laps later while battling a loose condition.  A debris caution on lap 59 brought the field to pit road.  Gordon opted for four tires and departed in 5th place.

Gordon dropped back to 10th on the restart after getting squeezed on the inside line.  After the field became strung out he regrouped and took 8th from Greg Biffle on lap 65.   However, a back and forth battle with Biffle moved Gordon up the track and back to 10th.  Gordon came back and passed Biffle for 9th on lap 68, before Biffle returned the favor one lap later.  Gordon patiently moved around traffic and ran 7th on lap 80.  He used the high line in the corner to take 6th from Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 86.  Kasey Kahne’s spin on lap 93 brought the caution and the leaders came to pit road.  Gordon exited pit road in 4th place, but once again lost spots on the inside line and ran 11th at lap 100.  At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 9th place – distantly behind leaders Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson.

A caution for Montoya’s engine brought the caution and the field to pit road on lap 139.  However, Gordon stayed on the track and collected a 5 point bonus for leading.  On the restart, Gordon chose the outside line and maintained the top spot until Ryan Newman blew an engine on lap 147.  He lost the lead on the restart as Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch went by on lap 154.  With 90 laps to go, Johnson went around Gordon to take 3rd place.  Gordon battled back and took 3rd from Johnson with 88 to go.   Trouble began with 75 laps to go when Gordon radioed about an engine problem.  He slowed dramatically and came to pit road with 72 laps go with the oil temperature rising.   The caution waved for rain with 70 to go and Gordon moved up to 4th due to drivers coming to pit road for fuel.   The field ran under caution for nearly 20 minutes before the green flag waved with 50 laps to go.

The engine once again produced problems and Gordon faded back in traffic until the engine picked up again.  With 35 laps to go, Gordon dropped back to 21st position as the engine was down a cylinder.  One lap later, Gordon came to pit road for tires.   Crew chief Steve Letarte speculated it was likely a spark plug problem with the car.   Gordon restarted in 25th place with 20 to go.  He moved around slower cars and up to 18th with 11 laps to go, before dropping two spots on lap 241.  Gordon finished the event in 20th.  The last time Gordon started a season with two sub-15th place finishes was 1996.
