Finally, Jeff Gordon has captured his record-breaking 85th career win. Gordon’s third win of 2011 made him the winningest driver in NASCAR’s modern era (post 1971). Gordon led the most laps in the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but needed to use all of his skill to hold off a charge from Jimmie Johnson in the closing stages. Johnson closed in with 10 laps to go, but Gordon held his line and bested his Hendrick Motorsports teammate for the win.
Nearly 40 hours after the AdvoCare 500 was scheduled to begin, the drivers took the green flag under overcast skies on Tuesday morning. Gordon started 5th and dropped to 7th by the end of the first lap. On lap 5, he took 6th from Martin Truex Jr. Gordon re-entered the top-5 with a lap 6 pass on Matt Kenseth. He took 4th from Brian Vickers and ran 3rd when Bobby Labonte spun on lap 12 to bring out the caution flag. Gordon pitted for tires and restarted in 21st after 17 cars stayed on the track. On the restart, he moved to 18th within two laps by taking advantage of newer tires. On lap 20, Gordon ran in 13th and moved into the top-10 just three laps later. By lap 25, Gordon closed in on Kevin Harvick for 6th place. He moved around Harvick and Tony Stewart to re-enter the top-5. After pit stops for the competition caution on lap 31, Gordon restarted in 3rd place. He moved to 2nd on the restart and took the lead from Kyle Busch on lap 46. Gordon held the lead through a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 79 and opened a 2.5-second lead. However, Labonte’s second spin of the day on lap 94 slowed the field and erased Gordon’s lead.
Gordon swapped the lead briefly with Busch on the restart, but once again pulled out to a comfortable lead by lap 102. A debris caution on lap 130 slowed the field and pit stops followed. Gordon’s crew inserted a spring rubber and dropped three spots on pit road. He restarted 4th on lap 135 and moved to 2nd within two laps behind Matt Kenseth. He re-assumed the top spot with a pass on lap 146. However, Kenseth passed Gordon for the lead on lap 166. Two laps later, Carl Edwards sent Gordon back to 3rd. On lap 170, Denny Hamlin took a position from Gordon as the handling on the #24 car went away. Following a green flag pit stop sequence, the caution waved on lap 175 after David Gilliland stopped at the entrance to pit road. Gordon ran in 3rd place at the caution as a light rain mist began falling on the track. At the 200-lap mark, Gordon was more than 2 seconds behind Kenseth and Edwards when the caution waved for the rain mist. Gordon lost 5 spots on pit road after a track bar adjustment and came off pit road in 8th. As rain began falling, JJ Yeley and Landon Cassill stayed on the track, thus dropping Gordon to 10th. The race was red-flagged on lap 210.
After nearly a one-hour delay, the race went back under green on lap 220. Gordon quickly gained 3 spots and moved to 5th within one lap. However, rain began falling on the backstretch which forced a yellow flag. The green waved again on lap 231 with Gordon lined up on the inside of Denny Hamlin. Gordon fell back to 8th within a lap of the restart, but regrouped to take 7th from David Ragan with 90 laps to go. He moved back into the top-5 with 88 laps to go. Clint Bowyer’s wall contact brought out the caution flag on lap 240. Gordon restarted in 4th after gaining a spot on pit road. With 60 to go, he took the runner-up spot from Carl Edwards. He took the race lead from Johnson with 49 laps to go and held the lead through a cycle of green flag pit stops. In the closing stages, Johnson closed in on Gordon as the Hendrick Motorsports teammates battled door to door over the final 10 laps. Gordon held off Johnson by using the high line off the corners en route to his 3rd win of 2011 and his record-breaking 85th career win.
- This is the first time since May 2007 that Gordon led at least 50 laps in three consecutive races.
- Gordon led more laps in the AdvoCare 500 than he had in the previous 7 Atlanta races combined.
Road ahead: A quick turnaround from the rain-delayed week in Atlanta brings the NASCAR series to Richmond for Saturday night’s race. It’s the final race before the Chase for the Championship begins. Gordon had a strong effort at Richmond in the spring, but a hard crash on the backstretch in the closing stages ended his night.

Tony Stewart dominated the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day weekend by leading 174 laps en route to his 38th career victory. Jeff Gordon was never a factor for the race lead and struggled with handling for the last 200 miles before finishing 13th.
Gordon has driven plenty of special paint schemes on the #24 Chevrolet during his NASCAR career. But Sunday night’s paint scheme at Atlanta Motor Speedway might have topped the list. The Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation scheme was designed by his 3-year-old daughter Ella (with help from Sam Bass). The paint scheme highlight’s Gordon’s foundation during childhood cancer awareness month.
Gordon started 18th and moved up four spots in the opening 10 laps. He moved to 12th on lap 17 but a loose handling condition hindered his forward progress. Gordon fell to 14th on lap 30 and came in for a green flag pit stop on lap 52. He ran in 18th after the cycle of pit stops. Gordon moved up to 15th on lap 75. A green flag pit stop on lap 97 cycled through with Gordon holding 15th at the 100-lap mark.
The handling improved and Gordon took 12th on lap 114. The first caution waved on lap 133 for debris in turn 2 (ie. Dale Earnhardt Jr going a lap down). Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 11th place. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 141 with a pass on Jamie McMurray on the restart. The second caution waved on lap 144 for Denny Hamlin’s blown engine. The leaders came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 6th place. One lap after the restart, Ryan Newman wrecked Greg Biffle in turn three. Biffle’s spinning car collected Elliott Sadler in the melee.
Gordon slipped to 7th on the restart when Kyle Busch passed. However, Gordon re-assumed the 6th position from Busch on lap 167. He moved into the top-5 with a move around Kasey Kahne on lap 169. Gordon passed Martin Truex for 4th on lap 184 as he closed in on Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson at the front of the field. The handling began going away as Kevin Harvick took a spot from Gordn on lap 194. A caution for David Ragan’s spin on lap 201 brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon picked up a spot on pit road and restarted in 4th on lap 209. However, almost like clockwork, he fell to 8th on the restart. However, unlike the previous restarts where Gordon’s car came to life during the run, he continued to fade through the field. He fell out of the top-10 on lap 223, and slipped to 12th on lap 226.
Gordon’s hopes for a victory faded on lap 230 when he dropped to 15th and complained of a complete lack of grip. Gordon came to pit road just before Kevin Harvick’s cut tire brought out the caution flag. Gordon rolled through pit road without stopping to stay on the lead lap. He came to pit road under caution for fuel, tires, and a chassis adjustment. He restarted in 20th place with 62 laps to go. Gordon stayed out during a caution period for Scott Speed’s blown engine and moved up to 2nd place. However, he was no match for the field on four tires and he faded to 7th within two laps of the restart. A caution for Brad Keselowski’s cut tire with 27 to go brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon exited in 10th place.
A debris caution with 22 laps to go brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. He restarted in 12th place with 19 laps to go. He dropped a spot in the final laps and came across the finish line in 13th. He remained 2nd in the series standings with one more race before the season-ending Chase for the Championship begins in mid-September.

March 8 – - Kurt Busch captured the spring race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the second straight year. Busch made a daring move on the penultimate restart to take the lead. The race was not without controversy as Carl Edwards was parked by NASCAR after retaliating against Brad Keselowski for a bump early in the event. Keselowski’s car flipped over on the frontstretch and pancaked the outside wall with the roof.
Jeff Gordon’s day was an exercise in frustration. Gordon started 5th and dropped a position at the outset to Kasey Kahne. Robby Gordon crashed to bring out the first caution on lap 4. He took a position from Mark Martin, and then took 4th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 15. The second caution came on lap 35 for David Ragan’s cut tire and subsequent contact with the wall. The leaders came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 5th place. On the restart, Carl Edwards and Joey Logano hit the turn two wall after Brad Keselowski clipped Edwards at the bottom of the track. Gordon moved up to 3rd on lap 65, before Kurt Busch took the spot on lap 67. A debris caution on lap 77 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon departed pit road in 3rd place after a sub-15 second stop. On the restart, Gordon slipped back to 5th before rallying to take 4th on lap 89. He ran in 3rd on lap 100, but dropped the spot to Kahne on lap 109. Mark Martin’s spin on lap 115 brought the caution and the leaders to pit road. Gordon restarted in 8th and moved to 5th by lap 125. However, he dropped to 7th as Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson passed in the next four laps. By lap 142, he was down to the 12th spot after struggling with loose handling.
Gordon pitted for tires and losing more positions. He received a penalty for speeding on pit road, thus necessitating a pass-thru. Joey Logano’s cut tire on lap 160 brought out the caution and trapped Gordon two laps down. He made up a lap by not pitting under the caution flag. Gordon worked his way to 29th — the first car one lap down by lap 185. Trouble struck Gordon on lap 203 when he slowed dramatically in turn one and came to pit road for a tire issue. He ran the balance of the event a lap down before a wreck on the first green/white/checkered lap allowed him to get back on the lead lap. Gordon lined up 19th for the second attempt at a green/white/checkered finish. He gained one spot and finished the event in 18th. Gordon moved into a tie for 11th in the series points standings.
The NASCAR series takes a week off before returning to the track at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 21. Although Gordon has started the season with three finishes of 18th or worse in the first 4 races, they’ve run much better than the results indicate. When you knock on the door long enough, eventually it opens… eventually.

September 7 – - Jeff Gordon battled handling issues throughout the Pep Boys 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway en route to an 8th place finish. He moved up to 2nd in points heading to Richmond — the final race before the chase for the championship begins.
Gordon started 4th and dropped to 6th within the first two laps before the tire pressures came up. On lap 6, he took the 5th position from Kurt Busch. He ran down Kyle Busch and moved into 4th a few laps later. On lap 20, Gordon took 3rd from Jimmie Johnson. The first caution came on lap 37 for Sam Hornish’s spin, which allowed the drivers to come in for adjustments. Gordon, like all of his peers, dealt with handling issues during the opening run. He came onto pit road in 3rd place and departed in the same position.
He took 2nd place for Kasey Kahne within two laps of the restart before falling back to 4th after getting loose in turn two. On lap 48, he dropped back as Johnson and Denny Hamlin passed, and Mark Martin took a spot on lap 49. Gordon fell to 9th on lap 50 as Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch went by. Gordon fell to 16th on lap 60 battling a loose condition. Sam Hornish’s second spin of the night brought out the caution and the leaders came to pit road. Gordon restarted in 16th place on lap 65. Within one lap of the restart, he used the outside line to move up to 11th. His forward momentum stalled and was back to 14th on lap 80. Carl Edwards’ engine problem on lap 83 slowed the field for a caution period. Gordon gained four spots on pit road to move up to 9th place for the restart. He pedaled up to 6th on lap 88 by taking advantage of Hamlin who spun the tires coming up to speed. Gordon moved back into the top-5 with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 89. Hamlin regrouped to take 5th on lap 91.
Max Papis’ wall contact on lap 105 brought the caution out. Gordon held 6th through the round of pit stops. On the restart, Gordon moved up to 4th on the outside line. He took 3rd from Martin Truex on lap 116, before Johnson pushed him back to 4th one lap later. He regrouped to take 3rd from Kyle Busch on lap 125. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 131 as Gordon complained about a loose handling condition. The pit crew turned a 12.7 second stop to push Gordon into the lead. He chose the outside line for the restart and dropped to 2nd as Hamlin got a strong run off turn two. Gordon went back to the front on lap 140 with a pass on Hamlin in turn one. However, he slipped to 3rd on lap 167 after Hamlin and Kevin Harvick passed. Two laps later, Brian Vickers went around Gordon on the outside line. Dale Earnhardt Jr passed by on lap 176, and Mark Martin went by on lap 182. Gordon came in for a four-tire change on lap 189 under the green flag. Johnson’s spin on lap 201 brought the caution out with Gordon in 8th. He gained two spots during pit stops and restarted 6th on lap 204.
Gordon moved to 2nd on the restart, but slipped back to 4th as the tire run continued. On lap 221, Earnhardt Jr and Martin passed to put Gordon back to 6th. With 100 laps to go, Gordon ran in 8th while battling loose handling issues. A caution for Kurt Busch and Reed Sorensen’s crash brought the field to pit road. The pit crew once again did its job by gaining two spots. He moved to 4th on the restart with 72 laps to go. However, as was the case throughout the race, Gordon fell off as the run progressed. He dropped two spots back to 6th with 60 to go. Joey Logano’s spin with 57 to go brought the field back to the pit road. Gordon exited pit road in 11th place due to a dropped lugnut. He re-entered the top-10 with 47 laps to go, and took 9th from Kyle Busch four laps later. Brian Vickers took a position from Gordon with 29 to go, sending him back to 10th. Clint Bowyer’s spin with 16 to go set up some drama for the finish of the race. Gordon lost a position on pit road and restarted in 11th with 11 laps to go. He moved to 8th shortly after the restart but didn’t challenge Vickers for position. At the front of the field, Kasey Kahne took the lead from Kevin Harvick on the final restart to win his second race of the season.

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT IMPALA SS, FINISHED 8TH:
“It was really crazy. There were a lot of things going on. I can’t even keep up with all the different things that happened. There were times I thought we had the car to beat then I thought we were going to go a lap down. We were trying to keep up with the changing conditions whether it was track, tires or whatever it was. Man, we were all over the place and never could seem to find any consistency. It was a good fight, a good top-10 and it was good to lead some laps.”
