Kyle Busch led the most laps in the Auto Club 400 but needed a dramatic final lap to score his first victory of the 2013 season. Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano battled for the race lead entering turn 3. Logano eased up the track and into the side of Hamlin’s car. That allowed Busch to use the high line to move past both. Contact from Hamlin sent Logano into the wall, while Hamlin spun and hit the retaining wall at the entrance to pit road. Busch powered on to the line for the last lap win.

Jeff Gordon’s day was an up and down affair where he salvaged an 11th place finish. Gordon started 19th and moved up to 16th by the end of lap 5. However, he slipped to 17th on lap 7 when Kasey Kahne went by. Gordon worked his way up to 15th by the time the first caution waved on lap 28 for David Stremme’s spin. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 18th place. He moved up to 14th before the next caution for Timmy Hill’s oil line on lap 37. Gordon hit the wall coming off turn 2 and sustained damage after running through oil from Hill’s car. Nevertheless, the #24 car stayed out and restarted 9th on lap 43. He fell to 14th by lap 45, and dropped back to 16th on lap 47. By lap 50, Gordon ran in 28th place while battling handling issues from the right side damage. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 67 and cycled through in 24th place. A debris caution on lap 91 brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. He restarted in 26th place on lap 95.

At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 24th place. During a caution period with 82 laps to go, Gordon came in for tires and then to top off the fuel in the hopes of making it to the finish on one more stop. After the restart, Gordon moved up to 19th place and steadily gained spots. He advanced to 14th prior to a caution with 70 to go. With fuel strategy out of the equation, Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 15th. He climbed to 13th with 60 to go, but faded to 15th by lap 150. Gordon’s final green flag pit stop came with 37 laps to go and cycled through in 16th place. A caution for Marcos Ambrose’s cut tire with 30 laps to go brought Gordon to pit road for a 2-tire change. He restarted in 10th place with 26 laps to go. He quickly moved to 8th prior to a caution for Mark Martin’s spin. On the restart, Gordon fell to 10th and ran 13th with 17 laps to go. A caution for Clint Bowyer’s engine slowed the field with 15 to go. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 14th place.

On the restart, Gordon used the outside line and moved into the top-10. He gained four spots and ran 6th with 10 laps to go. However, he dropped to 10th with 7 to go, and fell out of the top-10 one lap later. Gordon finished 11th and moved up to 18th in the series standings.

Turning point
After a fade through the field in the first half of the race where he fell as low as 28th, Gordon rallied in the later stages. He ran 24th at halfway and used several caution periods to make chassis adjustments to improve the handling.

After battling handling issues for the first half of the race, Jeff Gordon’s team used pit strategy and adjustments to take the race lead after the halfway point. However, a blown tire on lap 389 sent Gordon up the track and into the wall. He pulled the #24 car behind the wall with major damage.

 Gordon started 11th and dropped to 12th prior to the first caution on lap 9 for Tony Stewart’s cut tire and subsequent spin. On the restart, Gordon moved into the top-10 and ran 9th on lap 20. He moved to 8th on lap 50, just before the day’s second caution for Jeff Burton’s wall contact. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 5th place after opting for 2 tires. He lost spots on the restart, but moved back to 6th following Jamie McMurray’s spin on lap 70. He gained two spots and ran 4th after the restart. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon took 3rd from Kasey Kahne. However, Kahne re-took the spot 25 laps later. He moved back into 3rd with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 147. He followed Kahne around Denny Hamlin on lap 149 to move into the runner-up spot prior to a caution on lap 152 for David Gilliland’s wall contact. Gordon changed four tires and restarted in 5th place on lap 158.

Gordon lost a spot to Jimmie Johnson and ran 6th on lap 180. Tight handling hindered the #24 car as Matt Kenseth took a spot from Gordon shortly after the 200-lap mark. Landon Cassill’s wall contact on lap 236 slowed the field and brought pit stops where the #24 crew removed a spring rubber to improve the car’s handling. Gordon restarted 9th on lap 242 and dropped out of the top-10 on lap 260, but re-entered the top-10 a few laps later with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr. He took 9th from Clint Bowyer on lap 278, and passed Greg Biffle for 8th on lap 281. However, Biffle got around Gordon to re-take 8th place after the 300-lap mark. A caution for Dave Blaney’s wall contact brought pit stops on lap 322. Gordon opted for 2 tires and exited pit road with the race lead. He held off Joey Logano before Denny Hamlin got into his former teammate and spun him coming off turn 2.

Gordon entered turn 3 on lap 389 on the low side just before his tire blew out. He went up the track and collected Matt Kenseth after drilling the wall. It was Gordon’s 1st DNF of the 2013 season.

Turning point
A blown tire on lap 389 sent Gordon up the track into the wall.

JG’s comments
“We heard left side (tires) were helping the cars turn. We saw some other guys do that, and it definitely did that. The car was really good out front on the restarts. We got clear air and were setting sail. The right fronts never blow out when you’re up against the wall. I dove down to the bottom to pass the 32 car. As soon as I got into the banking, I felt the right front go. I really hate that we collected Matt Kenseth in that. He had a great car. He was coming – it was just a matter of time before he got us. But, a great, great effort today up until then for this team. We needed points. This is definitely not going to get us many.”

Matt Kenseth held off Kasey Kahne to win his first race in his third start for Joe Gibbs Racing following an off-season move from Roush Racing. The 2003 NASCAR champion beat Kahne despite having older tires.

Jeff Gordon had a frustrating day where he battled handling issues en route to a sub-par 25th place effort. This is the third time in the last 4 years that Gordon has started a season with two finishes below 19th in the first 3 races.

Gordon started 10th and dropped a spot in the opening laps. As the run progressed, he moved to 9th by lap 10. However, he battled a loose handling car and dropped to 13th on lap 18. He fell to 15th by lap 40 while searching for grip on the track. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 46. Following adjustments he returned to the race in 16th place. As Gordon was in danger of going a lap down while running less than 2 seconds ahead of race leader Kasey Kahne in 17th place, NASCAR opted to throw a debris caution on lap 66. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarting in 17th place on lap 71. The handling didn’t improve and Gordon ran distantly behind the leader in 18th place by the 100-lap mark.

As Gordon was about to go a lap down, he came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 118. Gordon returned to the event one lap down. He slipped back to 20th by lap 135. A caution on lap 160 allowed Gordon to come to pit road for more adjustments. Gordon restarted in 16th place — the first car one lap down. However, Tony Stewart went by to send Gordon back to 17th place with 85 laps to go. A caution for Bobby Labonte’s spin with 73 to go allowed Gordon to take the wave around and get back on the lead lap. However, he dropped two laps down when he pitted under green with 48 laps to go. Gordon ran 23nd when the caution waved with 44 laps to go for Travis Kvapil’s engine. Gordon stayed out for another wave around to get to one lap down. Gordon dropped to 26th after the restart. A caution for Ryan Newman’s blown engine with 32 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 21st place. In the closing stages, Gordon fell to 23rd with 19 to go. Four laps later, he dropped to 25th where he finished the event.

Turning point
Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the day. The only turning point was the lack of true turning ability on the #24 car.

Jeff Gordon battled track position for the balance of the Subway 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. He found himself outside the top-20 at one point, but rallied back for his 2nd top-10 finish in the last 3 races dating back to 2012.

Gordon started 5th and took 4th from Tony Stewart by lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 22 when Scott Riggs hit the wall. Gordon opted to stay out and hold onto 4th place. Kevin Harvick went by on lap 31 to drop Gordon to 5th place. The second caution came on lap 47 for Kyle Busch’s spin in turn two. Pit stops followed with Gordon changing two tires. He restarted in 11th place after 7 cars stayed out. He moved to 9th on lap 64 when polesitter Mark Martin pitted. A caution on lap 66 for Dave Blaney’s spin slowed the field. Gordon worked his way to 8th on lap 80 with a pass on Matt Kenseth. The next caution came just before the 100-lap mark when Ryan Newman cut a tire and hit the wall. Gordon’s crew changed four tires during pit stops and he restarted in 19th place.

On the restart, Gordon dropped to 21st place. Newman’s second contact with the wall in the event slowed the field on lap 142. Gordon came to pit road and restarted 19th. He worked his way up to 16th by lap 175, but ran more than 12 seconds behind race leader Carl Edwards. The sixth caution waved on lap 185 after Danica Patrick cut a tire and slammed the wall. Following pit stops, Gordon restarted 11th on lap 196 and moved into the top-10 on lap 200. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire brought the field to pit road with 74 laps to go. Gordon changed 2 tires and restarted in 9th place.

Gordon dropped to 10th with 68 to go and lost another spot to Joey Logano one lap later. Gordon re-assumed the 10th spot with 48 to go. He took 9th from Kevin Harvick with 30 laps to go. However, he dropped to 10th with 6 laps to go when Jeff Burton went by. Ken Schrader’s wall contact with 3 laps to go brought out the caution and a green/white/checkered finish. On the final restart, Gordon took 9th from Burton where he came across the finish line.

Turning point
The Pepsi Max Chevrolet tended to work better on longer runs. As Gordon was making headway into the top-10, a caution with 74 laps to go brought the field to pit road. Gordon lost spots on the restart, which hindered his forward march in the closing stages.

Jeff Gordon started on the inside of the first row and moved ahead of polesitter Danica Patrick coming off turn 2. He led a single-file line under the first caution for debris on lap 27. Gordon came to pit road and opted for a two-tire change to hold the top spot. On the restart, Gordon moved up to the outside line to draft with his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne. He lost the lead on lap 31 when Jimmie Johnson went by on the low line. Gordon slipped in line just ahead of Kahne in 4th place. That turned out to be an advantegous spot when Kyle Busch and Kahne made contact on lap 33 while running 5th and 6th. Kahne spun sideways and collected Juan Pablo Montoya. The ensuing melee collected Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears, and Brad Keselowski (who collected minor damage to the front of his car).

Gordon remained on the outside line when racing resumed. At the 100-mile mark, he ran in 6th place. He moved to 4th place in a single-file line on lap 42. He remained there until a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 72. Following stops, Gordon ran 5th in a single-file formation. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 83. Gordon came in for fuel and returned to the event in 7th place. On the restart, Gordon slipped back to 15th place on the high line. At the halfway point, Gordon ran single-file in 14th place. As his water temperature increased, Gordon moved to the inside line and dropped to 19th place on lap 109. Three laps later, he ran in 26th place. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 130. Seven laps later, Gordon dove low sneaked through a multi-car wreck on lap 137 which eliminated Carl Edwards, Trevor Bayne, Terry Labonte, Josh Wise, David Ragan, Austin Dillon, and David Gilliand. Gordon restarted 14th on lap 146 and moved into the top-10 by lap 149.

Gordon ran 6th in single-file with 50 laps to go. He took 5th when Kyle Busch dropped off the pace. Gordon came to pit road for a scheduled two-tire change under the green flag on lap 173. A caution flag for Jeff Burton’s crash slowed the field on lap 178 with Gordon in 10th place. On the restart with 19 to go, Gordon held the outside line behind Danica Patrick and moved to 4th place. However, the inside line, led by Jimmie Johnson gained momentum and created side-by-side racing at the front of the field. Gordon was caught in the middle line with 12 to go and dropped back to 12th place behind Joey Logano. Gordon moved up to 9th before a debris caution with 9 laps to go. On the restart with 6 to go, Gordon moved to the middle and pushed Logano. However, he wound up getting pinned in a 3-way situation before clearing two cars. With 3 to go, Gordon lost momentum on the inside line and dropped outside the top-20. He sustained minor damage on the final lap trying to avoid a melee coming off turn 2. Gordon has just 1 top-10 finish in his last 8 starts in the Daytona 500.

Turning point
Gordon was shuffled back in traffic after the final restart with 6 laps to go. He pushed Joey Logano, but wound up losing momentum on the low line and faded beyond 20th place.

JG’s Post-Race Comments
“It’s pretty frustrating for us. We were in a great position at the start of the race, lost track position, got it back, and felt like we were in a great position to get a top-5 if not a win and battle for it up there. Our car was awesome. Just those last couple of restarts, the lane that we were in just didn’t go anywhere. We tried. We tried up the middle and down the bottom. That top lane just seemed to be the way to go. We tried hard but it certainly didn’t pay off for us. Pretty frustrating way to end it for us. I know were were a lot better than that. But, a lot better than last year. So we’ll take this, go on to Phoenix. I’m really excited about this new Chevy SS and getting to a short track — or at least a 1-mile racetrack like Phoenix.”

Jeff Gordon scored his 87th career win as he played fuel mileage strategy to perfection at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The win allowed Gordon to finish in the top-10 for the 18th time in 20 NASCAR Cup series seasons.

Gordon started 11th and fell to 13th by lap 3. He moved back up to run 11th by lap 20 while battling a tight handling condition. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 25 with a pass on Mark Martin. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 47 and cycled through in 9th place. He soon lost a spot to Brad Keselowski on lap 51. However, he made steady progress as the run continued and ran 8th on lap 70. The first caution waved on lap 78 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 7th place. He took 6th from Carl Edwards and entered the top-5 with a pass on Jimmie Johnson by the 100-lap mark. Gordon passed Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth in the next 10 laps to run 3rd on lap 110. Green flag pit stops came on lap 131. A caution for debris slowed the field 10 laps later. Gordon opted for 4 tires on the pit stop and restarted in 11th place.

Ricky Stenouse’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 156. Gordon took fuel only on the pit stop and restarted 10th. On fresher tires than most drivers ahead of him, Gordon moved to 5th place with 85 to go. Gordon stayed on the track during a green flag pit stop sequence and led a lap before coming to pit road. He returned to the race in 8th position and quickly moved to 6th. With 40 laps to go. Gordon moved to 4th as Brad Keselowski clinched the 2012 Sprint Cup championship after Jimmie Johnson dropped out of the race.

Gordon took 3rd from Carl Edwards with 36 to go. Since he didn’t need to make another stop, Gordon took the lead after Kyle Busch and Martin Truex pitted. He led Clint Bowyer by more than 2 seconds in the closing laps and scored his second victory of 2012. Gordon has visited Victory Lane at every track he’s ever competed on in the NASCAR Cup series — except Kentucky.

Turning point
Gordon stretched his fuel to the final pit stop and didn’t need to come in when race leaders Kyle Busch and Martin Truex came to pit road with under 15 laps to go.

On a day when Brad Keselowski took a major step toward his first NASCAR title because of Jimmie Johnson’s cut tire and wall contact, the major story was not race winner Kevin Harvick. Rather, it was a late race melee involving Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer. After several on-track incidents this year, Bowyer hit Gordon in the later stages of the race to take a position. Gordon got into the wall and waited for the #15 car to come around the track. Gordon then turned into Bowyer and sent both cars into the wall. A wild melee in the pits ensued with Bowyer’s crew attepting to get to Gordon after he exited the car. Gordon was credited with a 30th place finish.

Gordon started 11th and gained six spots by lap 7. The first caution waved on lap 17 for an incident involving Mike Bliss. Gordon stayed out and took 6th from Aric Almirola on lap 25. The next caution waved on lap 51 for David Gilliland’s wall contact. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarting 12th on lap 59. He moved up to 8th by lap 90 and took 6th on lap 97. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 131 and cycled through in 6th place. He took 5th from Kasey Kahne on lap 151, but complained of handling issues. A debris caution on lap 167 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon fell to 12th for the restart on lap 174. Gordon backed off after his teammate Jimmie Johnson pulled up on the outside and dropped to 15th on lap 175. However, he regrouped and moved up to 12th on lap 185. Gordon re-entered the top-10 with a pass on Matt Kenseth on lap 198 and moved to 8th on lap 212.

The complexion of the championship changed when Jimmie Johnson drilled the wall after cutting a tire with 78 laps to go. And this time, unlike Kansas, the damage was too much to salvage a top-10 finish. Gordon pitted under caution and restarted in 8th place. He briefly fell to 10th before moving back to 8th with 55 to go. David Ragan’s cut tire brought out the caution flag with 39 laps to go. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 6th place with 35 to go. He moved to 5th before Tony Stewart’s spin brought a caution with 31 to go. Gordon dropped to 6th before a caution for Sam Hornish’s cut tire with 12 laps to go. On the restart, he moved to 5th before contact from Clint Bowyer put Gordon into the turn 3 wall. Gordon waited for Bowyer to come back around the track and drilled the #15 car into the wall. A wild melee ensued on pit road as Bowyer’s crew attempted to attack Gordon. Bowyer then sprinted from his wrecked car and tried to chase Gordon down in the #24 hauler. Gordon was escorted to the NASCAR hauler for a meeting about his actions

Turning point
Gordon was running 5th at the halfway point, but handling issues hindered his progress in the second half of the event. Of course, the ultimate turning point came with 4 laps to go when contact from Bowyer put Gordon in the wall, thus bringing a dose of payback.

Jimmie Johnson took another step toward his 6th championship with a victory in the AAA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Johnson took the lead from Brad Keselowski on the green/white/checkered restart and pulled away to win his second consecutive race. Jeff Gordon finished 14th after battling late-race tire problems and contact from another driver.

Gordon started 16th and gained two spots by lap 20. As the run progressed, Gordon was able to gain more ground. He moved up to 11th by lap 30 before coming to pit road for a 4-tire change on lap 46. Gordon moved into the top-10 following the stops and took 9th from Kasey Kahne on lap 68. He moved to 8th prior to the next round of green flag stops on lap 90. He ran 10th when the caution waved for debris on lap 100. Gordon came to pit road and departed in 10th place. He moved to 6th by lap 130 and entered the top-5 with a pass on Martin Truex on lap 152. Following another round of green flag pit stops on lap 170, Gordon ran in 4th place. He took 3rd from Clint Bowyer on lap 177, but ran distantly behind race leaders Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski. However, a debris caution on lap 186 allowed Gordon to close the gap to the leaders. He lost two spots on pit road and restarted in 5th place on lap 190.

On the restart, Gordon reclaimed 4th from Truex on lap 195. A debris caution on lap 224 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon lost a spot and restarted in 5th place. He moved up to 4th just after the restart and passed Johnson for 3rd with 90 laps to go. Gordon moved into the runner-up spot with 83 to go with a move around Kyle Busch. However, with 65 laps to go, Gordon came to pit road after wearing out a tire. A caution for debris with 60 laps to go forced Gordon to use the wave around to get back on the lead lap. He restarted in 25th position with 54 to go. Over the next 20 laps he moved up to the 18th position. A caution for Marcos Ambrose’s wall contact with 25 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon came to pit road for tires. He moved to 12th with 16 laps to go, and entered the top-10 two laps later. However, contact from Greg Biffle moved Gordon up the track into Kasey Kahne. Gordon sustained minor sheet metal damage on the right front as Kahne hit the wall to bring out the caution. He came onto pit road for repairs to the right front of the car. Gordon restarted 23rd with 8 laps to go.

At the front of the field, Keselowski and Johnson battled door to door for the lead with Keselowski holding the top spot. A caution for Mark Martin slowed the field with 5 laps to go and brought the green/white/checkered finish into play. Gordon had moved up to 16th prior to Martin’s spin. On the restart, Johnson took the lead from Keselowski to score his second consecutive victory. Gordon finished a disappointing 14th after a tire issue and contact from Biffle. Barring a disasterous race for both Keselowski and Johnson in Phoenix, Gordon will be eliminated from Chase contention following the Checker 500k next Sunday.

Turning point
Gordon came to pit road with 65 laps to go while running 2nd due to a tire going down. A subsequent caution sealed his fate at Texas.

Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Brad Keselowski with 14 laps to go and held off Kyle Busch after a late race restart to score the victory in the Tums 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson’s victory — coupled with Keselowski’s 6th place finish — moved Johnson into the points lead. Jeff Gordon led 91 laps in the race and finished in 7th place.

Gordon started 11th and moved up to 8th by the end of lap 6. He took 7th fron Tony Stewart on lap 11 and entered the top-5 on lap 17. He passed Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch to take 3rd place on lap 25. Gordon moved into the runner-up spot with a pass on Brian Vickers on lap 33. The first caution waved on lap 46 for David Stremme’s cut tire. Gordon held the 2nd spot thru a round of pit stops, but dropped to 3rd when Kyle Busch went by after the restart. Gordon re-assumed the 2nd position after passing Busch on lap 62. Gordon took the race lead from Jimmie Johnson on lap 68. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire slowed the field on lap 98. Gordon dropped to 3rd following a round of pit stops. He moved to 2nd on lap 106 and moved back into the race lead on lap 107. The next caution waved for Travil Kvapil’s spin on lap 127. Gordon stayed on the track and lost the lead to Brian Vickers on lap 147. Denny Hamlin sent Gordon back to 3rd on lap 148. A caution for Kyle Busch’s spin slowed the field on lap 150. Gordon came in for a four-tire change and restarted in 18th place.

Gordon moved through race traffic into the top-10 by lap 174. His forward march continued as he took 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 180, and moved around Kurt Busch for 6th on lap 185. He ran 4th when the caution waved on lap 199 for Marcos Ambrose’s spin. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 2nd place. He took the lead from Johnson on the restart. After leading lap 215, Gordon passed Darrell Waltrip for the 6th most laps led in NASCAR history. However, Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 226 and sent Gordon back to 3rd place. He regrouped and took 2nd from Johnson just before the halfway mark. Kasey Kahne took 2nd from Gordon on lap 318 and Hamlin sent him to 4th on lap 324. Brian Vickers passed on lap 326 to push Gordon back to 5th, and Johnson sent him to 6th on lap 331. He fell to 7th when Kyle Busch went by. Gordon came to pit road on lap 337 for a green flag pit stop. Gordon ran 4th following the pit stop cycle. He moved to 3rd on lap 373 when Hamlin slowed on the track.

Johnson and Busch sent Gordon back to 5th on lap 391 prior to a caution for Hamlin whose car (and Chase hopes) died on the track. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 5th. He moved around Kahne to take 4th with 100 laps to go. He took 3rd from Busch with 83 to go and set his sights on Johnson and Bowyer at the front of the field. Gordon took 2nd from Bowyer with 70 to go. A caution for Juan Pablo Montoya’s spin after contact with Johnson slowed the field with 62 to go. Gordon ran 2nd to Johnson before a caution for Kevin Harvick’s engine with 25 laps to go. Brad Keselowski and Earnhardt Jr stayed on the track during the caution. Johnson and Gordon restarted 3rd and 4th with 19 to go. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 6th on the outside line before regrouping to take 5th from Earnhardt Jr with 16 to go. He took 4th from Keselowski with 12 to go. Two laps later, the caution waved for Earnhardt Jr’s spin in turn 2 after contact from Carl Edwards. On the restart, Gordon faded on the outside line. He dropped to 5th with 5 to go in a door-banging duel with Bowyer and lost 6th place on the final lap to Keselowski. The 7th place finish was Gordon’s 8th top-10 in the last 10 races. However, he trails points leader Johnson by 54 points with just 3 races to go.

Turning point
Gordon seemed to be tracking down Johnson for the race lead in the closing stages when a caution with 25 laps to go bunched the field. Gordon was unable to get close to the lead after that.

JG’s comments
“It was strong, especially the first half — that meant a lot to me and this team. This team made an amazing effort. The pit stops were great and the car was dominant. I think we wore the left rear tire out or something on the long run. But the last thing we wanted was to be on the outside of those last two restarts. We were and it cost us.”

Matt Kenseth might be leaving Roush Racing at the end of the 2012 season, but he’s creating quite a final act with his second victory in the Chase. Kenseth scored the win at Kansas Speedway in an event that featured 14 caution flags because of the repaved track surface. Jeff Gordon struggled with handling on the final run of the day and finished 10th. He trails points leader Brad Keselowski by 51 points with just 4 races to go.

Gordon started 19th and moved up to 15th by the end of lap 5. He was running 14th when the first caution waved on lap 31 for Casey Mears’ wall contact. Gordon pitted for tires and restarted in 20th place. He moved to 17th but was unable to make significant headway before the next caution on lap 70 for AJ Allemdinger’s cut tire. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted in 7th place. He moved to 6th before a caution for Jeff Burton’s wall contact on lap 83. Gordon slipped to 9th after the restart, but eventually worked his way around Regan Smith to take 8th place on lap 110. Aric Almirola’s cut tire on lap 123 slowed the field. Gordon came in for tires and restarted in 4th place. Jimmie Johnson crashed on lap 136 to bring out the caution. Johnson got loose exiting turn 4 and backed the Lowes Chevrolet into the wall. Repairs were made on pit road which allowed Johnson to stay on the lead lap.

On the restart, Gordon moved to the runner-up position behind race leader Matt Kenseth. One lap later, Bobby Labonte’s wall contact slowed the field. Gordon dropped to 3rd on the restart before Danica Patrick’s crash brought out the caution on lap 156. He came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted 7th because of some drivers opting not to pit. Gordon dropped to 9th before a caution on lap 165 for Tony Stewart’s spin. A caution for Greg Biffle’s crash with 92 to go slowed the field with Gordon in 10th place. With 85 to go, Ryan Newman hit Kyle Busch and created a wreck in turn 4. With 54 laps to go, Almirola’s crash brought out the caution and the final round of pit stops ensued. Gordon restarted in 9th place after opting for 4 tires. He moved to 8th before a caution for Sam Hornish’s cut tire with 33 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 9th with 14 to go when Brad Keselowski went by. Two laps later Johnson went by Gordon to drop him to 10th place where he finished the event. It was Gordon’s 7th top-10 in the last 9 races.

Turning point
A four-tire change during the final round of pit stops didn’t work out to Gordon’s advantage. He battled handling issues in the late stages of the event and dropped to 10th place.

JG’s comments
“It wasn’t that bad. It was hard to pass you just couldn’t reach the edge of the grip level really easy. My car stuck pretty good so I had pretty decent grip on the restarts and we were able to make up some spots. We did pretty good strategy so all in all it was a decent day for us. I thought we could pull off a top five at one point, but we just didn’t.”
