Talladega In-Car Audio

Jeff Gordon started from the pole and hooked up in a tight draft with Mark Martin. The duo moved ahead of the field and Gordon led the first 9 laps. The pair was overtaken by Denny Hamlin on lap 10. Gordon and Martin dropped to 32nd and 33rd after making a swap among themselves. They worked their way up to 27th before Landon Cassill hit Brian Vickers on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag on lap 28. Gordon came to pit road out of sequence with Martin and restarted near the rear of the field. Gordon and Martin ran in 25th/26th for most of the next 50 laps. A multi-car wreck in turn three on lap 90 eliminated Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, David Ragan, and Trevor Bayne. Gordon and Martin ran together in 25th before a debris caution with 60 laps to go. Gordon and Martin ran well behind the next incident with 49 laps to go when Kyle Busch spun and collected Matt Kenseth. The pair moved up to 15th/16th with 35 laps to go. Gordon restarted 21st with 20 to go. With 15 laps to go, Martin pushed Gordon up to the top-5. After Ryan Newman’s spin slowed the field, Gordon restarted 3rd with Martin in 5th with 11 laps to go. On the final lap, Martin pushed Gordon to the lead on the backstretch, but Clint Bowyer edged ahead on the upper groove. Gordon implored Martin to protect the bottom of the track, but his teammate was unable to do so. As they exited turn four, the combination of Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr moved to the low line and edged ahead of Gordon and Bowyer at the finish line. Gordon posted his third top-5 finish of the season with the 3rd place effort.

Road ahead: After an off-weekend for Easter, the series will head to the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway. Gordon’s pre-season test notes from Pikes Peak — as well as the Phoenix victory — should bode well for the Richmond chassis set-up.

After starting 32nd, Jeff Gordon took two tires on the first pit stop on lap 9 to gain 8 positions. He restarted 24th but fell back to 29th within four laps. A caution on lap 45 allowed the DuPont team to make chassis adjustments. Gordon was unable to make significant headway and additional adjustments came under caution on lap 113. As the night sky enveloped the track, Gordon moved to 22nd on lap 160. However, he went a lap down less than 20 laps later as the handling woes continued. A caution on lap 208 allowed Gordon to get back on the lead lap by staying on the track. He lost the lap during a long green flag run, and went another lap down on lap 226. He made the lap up trying to stretch the fuel to the end of the event, but ran out on the backstretch of the final lap. Gordon finished a difficult night in Texas in the 22nd position.

Road ahead: The series heads to Talladega Superspeedway — which should resemble the Daytona 500 with two-car drafting partners hooking up for extended periods of time. Gordon qualified on the outside of the front row at Daytona. His restrictor plate program for Talladega should be strong. However, plate racing often comes down to drafting partners and avoiding the multi-car melee(s).

Martinsville In-Car Audio – Spring 2011

April 4 – Jeff Gordon’s car looked solid at the outset and he moved from 21st to 13th in the opening 50 laps. However, he failed to make headway over the next 50 laps and ran 12th on lap 100. He moved into the top-10 on lap 145, and lined up 7th for a restart on lap 179. He made his way around Kyle Busch and entered the top-5 on lap 200. Gordon took the runner-up spot from Juan Pablo Montoya just before a major wreck on lap 221 involving Martin Truex and Kasey Kahne. The race was red flagged while track clean-up ensued. When the green flag waved, Gordon took the lead from Clint Bowyer on lap 253. However, Bowyer re-assumed the top spot from Gordon just three laps later. Gordon fell to 5th place before he was able to get back to the inside line. He dropped further back to 8th while battling a loose handling condition. Gordon steadily made his way back to the front and took over 2nd place by lap 310. With 135 laps to go, Gordon eased ahead of Kyle Busch for the race lead. However, Busch passed Gordon for the lead with 108 laps to go. Gordon was caught on pit road during a late race caution and restarted 9th with 29 laps to go. He made up four spots and posted his 12th top-5 finish in the last 13 races at Martinsville. Gordon gained four spots in the standings and is now 12th in the points race.

Road ahead: The series heads to Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night. After a disappointing effort at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in early March (similar 1.5-mile track), Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson will look to ride the momentum of a good effort at Martinsville.

JG’s comments:
“We did have a great day with our Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet. Don’t forget to text Hunger to 50555 and help us out. I was real proud of Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and all the guys on this team today. We weren’t great at the beginning. We just worked our way up there slowly, took our time and were patient. Then we had a race car that could run with these guys and we got there and took the lead. That one time I got real lose. I don’t know it just seemed like the track changed on us there at the end and that caution did not help us any either so that got us behind. I thought it was an awesome day for us to drive up there to fifth at the end.”

TOP FIVE FINISH AND YOU LED A LOT OF LAPS, PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE HOW YOUR RUN WAS TODAY?
“You know, it was really good. These tires were tricky today and getting track position was tough but we were really patient with the car at the beginning of the race and then it started coming to us and I thought that Alan and the guys in the pits just did an excellent job and we got ourselves out front, we just couldn’t seem to stay there when it counted most and Kyle was really, really strong on that one run and we couldn’t hold him back and we just tried to hang with him but when that caution came out when we pitted so that caught us out so we had to make up our track position at the end so it was a great top-five finish for us.”

Rewind: Starting deep in the field, Jeff Gordon powered up to 15th in the first 150 miles. Gordon noted improvements in the car after each pit stop. However, he was unable to make headway beyond 12th place and dropped to 17th by the halfway point. With 50 to go, Gordon fell to 20th and was struggling to stay on the lead lap. Crew chief Alan Gustafson had led Mark Martin to three straight top-6 finishes at the track, and Gordon was strong in both races in 2010. The duo seemed to hit on a setup that worked during practice on Saturday while posting the 5th fastest speed, but faltered during the main event on Sunday. Gordon struggled with track grip nearly all day and finished 18th. At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jimmie Johnson coming off turn four on the final lap to take the victory.

Road ahead: The ugly stats are that Gordon has just one top-10 finish in his last 8 races, and just two top-5 finishes in the last 22 events. However, Martinsville comes at the right time for Gordon. After a victory at Phoenix, Gordon has struggled over the last 3 races. Gordon posted 15 consecutive top-10 finishes at Martinsville before Kurt Busch’s front bumper snapped that streak last fall.

Jeff Gordon started off loose, but the car eventually tightened up as the opening run progressed. He ran 11th when the competition caution waved on lap 50. He ran 13th-15th over the next 100 laps battling a tight handling car in the center of the corners before a caution for Robby Gordon’s wall contact. At the halfway point, Gordon was running in 11th place — but the handling seemed to be improving as he turned the fastest laps just before a caution for Bobby Labonte’s spin. However, chassis adjustments proved to be his underdoing as he dropped to 15th and was in danger of going a lap down. A debris caution on lap 344 allowed Gordon to come to pit road for adjustments. He failed to make in-roads toward the top-10 over the last 150 laps and finished 14th. He remained 19th in the series standings, but would qualify for the Chase (if that became an issue in March!) due to his win at Phoenix.

Road ahead: Gordon has just one top-10 finish in his last 7 races, and just two top-5 finishes in the last 21 events. The series heads to the 2-mile speedway in Fontana, California, for Sunday’s race. Crew chief Alan Gustafson led Mark Martin to three straight top-6 finishes there. Jeff Gordon had solid efforts there in 2010, but an engine issue and a pit road penalty hindered his finishing position.

JG’s comments

TALK ABOUT YOUR DAY:

“It was more down than up, I think. We had one run where the car was just unbelievable on the long run and we had a long run and I don’t know how far we drove up there but I drove by a bunch of cars and I was pretty optimistic at that point. And I was still a little bit tight, which is what we’d been fighting in the center of the corner; and we freed it up and was so loose I couldn’t drive it after that. And we just went back and forth and back and forth. We salvaged a 14th place finish out of it, which you can’t complain too much about that. It was definitely not our day so we were frustrated at times and fighting hard but I felt like we worked well together as a team to get through kind of a rough day and come out here with a decent finish.”

HOW DID THE TIRE TREAT YOU?

“Well, it doesn’t have a lot of grip but we didn’t have any tire problems, or the #24 team didn’t have any tire problems. I don’t know if anybody else did. I know Goodyear’s intentions were good to try to get the drivers’ more grip, which is what we like to have. That’s what that first tire had. But we’ve got to have one that puts rubber down on the track too. This seemed like a good fix.”

YOU’RE NOT VERY HAPPY WITH BRAD KESELOWSKI. WHAT HAPPENED?

“The guy was three laps down. I understand. He’s trying to keep from going a lap down and hey, you’ve got to give him credit. They fought back and got back on the lead lap and got a decent finish out of it. I’ll just tell Brad that the next time I’m three laps down, and he’s on the lead lap, just expect the same out of me, you know? I don’t expect him to just let off. He had a fast race car. But when you’re three laps down and then you door-slam the guy trying to pass; that’s what ticked me off is when he got loose underneath me and got up into me, I got pretty mad then.”

Rewind: A cut tire on lap 194 sent Jeff Gordon into the wall in turn two while he was running 10th. Gordon brought the damaged DuPont Chevrolet onto pit road and climbed out. Gordon started 13th and stayed out during the first caution period to lead a lap. He dropped to the lower half of the top-10 after the restart battling a tight handling car. A long green flag run dropped him to 10th before a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 51. A caution for Kyle Busch’s cut tire brought the field to pit road on lap 97. Gordon exited pit road in 6th place and held the spot through two quick caution periods. In the mid-stages of the event, Gordon ran 8th-10th before a pit stop on lap 150 dropped him to 11th. The cut tire came without warning and put an early end to his day.

Road ahead: Through practice and the race, the #24 team battled handling issues. The car was far from dominant when compared to 2010. However, crew chief Alan Gustafson clearly made strides as the race progressed. A week off awaits before the series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway for the first short track race of the year. Gordon will drive the Pepsi Max car at Bristol — the first time he’s driven a Pepsi car at a track less than 1.5-miles long.

JG’s comments: “There was no sign (of the cut tire). We needed to free it up. Nothing we were doing seemed to be helping. The day started off pretty good, we were up toward the front. We started losing the handling on the last couple of runs. I’m glad I had a safer barrier to hit and a safe race car.”

Rewind: Finally — Jeff Gordon tied Cale Yarborough on NASCAR’s all-time wins list with his 83rd victory in the Subway 500k at Phoenix Raceway. Gordon dominated the event leading 138 of the 312 laps. Gordon started 20th and worked his way into the top-5 by lap 50. However, on lap 59 he was in the wrong place at the wrong time when Carl Edwards got into the grass on the backstretch and slid up the track. Gordon made contact with Edwards’ car and pancaked the retaining wall with the right side of the Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet. Gordon came to pit road to repair the damage and restarted in 34th place. Restarting in the rear proved advantageous when Brian Vickers wrecked and started a chain reaction crash on the backstretch. Gordon was able to stop on the track and avoided getting caught up in the 12-car melee. He stayed out under the caution and took the lead from Ryan Newman on lap 77. Gordon went back to the top spot on lap 124 before a caution for David Ragan’s wall contact. In the closing stages, Gordon flexed his muscle by passing Tony Stewart for 2nd with 20 laps to go, and Kyle Busch for the victory with 8 to go. It was Gordon’s second win at Phoenix and moved him within one victory of Darrell Waltrip’s career total.

Road ahead: The 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway is next on the schedule. Gordon dominated the race in 2010 only to see his victory hopes come unhinged in the final 25 laps following a two-tire pit stop. It’s early in the season, but it’s clear that Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson have jelled very quickly.

Daytona 500 In-Car Audio – 2011

Rewind:  Jeff Gordon started 2nd but dropped back on the start after failing to find a drafting partner. Help from Kasey Kahne kept Gordon in the top-10 until the first caution flag. On lap 10, Gordon was pushed into the top-5 by Kahne in a two-car draft before the second caution. Gordon restarted 24th and hooked up with Trevor Bayne in a draft. Gordon sustained minor damage to the front of the car after hitting the rear of Robby Gordon’s car when the field slowed for a caution flag on lap 23. A chain reaction wreck on lap 29 collected Gordon in the mess. Heavy damage to the rear of the car resulted in an extended trip to the garage area for repairs. Gordon returned and finished in 28th place — earning 17 NASCAR points. Trevor Bayne became the youngest ever (20) to win the Daytona 500.

Road ahead:  Throw out the “restrictor plate” madness of Daytona when the series heads to Phoenix. The #24 team tested at Pikes Peak Raceway in early February (1 mile track w/ similar banking) to prepare for the event. Gordon has struggled at Phoenix in recent years. A strong effort in the desert will go a long way toward moving him back into points contention.

JG’s comments:
“The Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet was really fast. I had just got with Trevor Bayne again, I had some help from Kasey Kahne in the beginning. We were having a lot of fun. You know, I totally get the two-car drafting and I think we are going to see a lot more of it. What I don’t understand is why guys are doing it three-wide, three-deep running for 28th. We need to let it thin out a little. As soon as it thins out, then go to it and they can do it pretty safe and pretty harm free. Like right there, I was sitting there just kind of riding along just waiting for it to thin out. I probably should have waited even farther in the back, but you see them and they are pushing and shoving up the middle down the back straightaway. I’m like ‘what are they doing’, you know. You can understand those guys in the front two or three rows, go ahead… they are going to go out there and do it. But, anyway, it is disappointing.

WHAT HAPPENED? “We got into the NO. 7 (Robby Gordon) when the No. 29 (Kevin Harvick) blew up. He got down in front of me, I just couldn’t get slowed down enough and got in the back of him and tore his car up. We had a little damage to the grill opening so we came in and patched that up. That got us in the back and we lost our drafting partner Trevor Bayne and Kasey Kahne. Back there you could actually just use the draft, you didn’t need a partner. I was watching these guys in front of me like bumper cars. Bumping off of one another, three deep, four deep and three and four wide. Unfortunately we go caught up in it. I saw the 00 (David Reutimann) get turned and I was doing everything I could to avoid it and we got caught up in it.”

HOW DISAPPOINTED ARE YOU? “It is such a bummer. We had such a fast race car, such a great race team. You have to take what you can from this. The most disappointing thing is we don’t have a shot at winning the Daytona 500. We prepared so long and hard, these guys worked so hard and built me such a great race car. So that is the bummer. But at the same time, this could be a good lesson for us to repair this car and get back out there and get ourselves prepared to win a championship.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE RACING OUT THERE? “In the first eight or 10 cars, it is good, it is fun. But everybody is trying to do this two-car draft all the way to 38th and that is where you have to be careful. You can’t be three and four wide and five rows deep trying to push and shove one another. You have to use your head a little bit more and you have to be a little more patient. When it thins out, then we can go. A lot of guys aren’t waiting for it to thin out, they are just pushing and they are getting themselves in trouble.”

DO YOU KNOW HOW THE WRECK HAPPENED? “I don’t know, somehow the 00 got turned, I’m not really sure how. I’m pretty sure somebody was pushing him and he had to check up or something happened. You are going to see a lot more of it. It is just not going to work until we thin out the field. Unfortunately we are one of those cars that got thinned out of it. We’ll do what we can to get this Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet repaired and get back out there and get as many points as we can.

Gatorade Duel 2011

Rewind: Jeff Gordon started on the pole for the Gatorade Duel and the field quickly went into two-car drafts which have become standard during Daytona Speedweeks. Gordon drafted early in front of Trevor Bayne. He was pushed to the front on two occasions by the 19-year-old rookie. The duo was broken up by a caution flag with 23 laps to go, which mandated they re-start parallel to each other. However, Bayne eased up to allow Gordon to lead their drafting pack, thus showing wisdom well beyond his years. On the final lap, Gordon got loose coming out of turn four with Bayne tucked in behind. The car brushed the wall and made contact with Bayne, thus triggering a wreck. Gordon masterfully steered around the spinning cars of Bayne and Ragan to bring the car back with minimal damage.

Road ahead: The #24 car will repair the primary car for Sunday’s race. Gordon will start on the outside of the front row along side Kurt Busch, with Jeff Burton directly behind him. Gordon’s car seemed to struggle on restarts in the Gatorade Duel as the partnership with Bayne lost spots on every restart.

JG’s comments:

WHAT HAPPENED THERE AT THE END? “I just could not get going on the restarts. I really had a blast working with Trevor Bayne. He’s a good kid. He’s a heck of a race car driver. They’ve got a fast race car. We just couldn’t get going on the restarts though. I’m not sure why we couldn’t get that momentum. So we lost a lot of spots on every restart and then once we got going, we were fast; real fast. There at the end, we lost so many spots we were just trying to make up a few. A couple of guys looked like they lost momentum and got disconnected and I had to go three-wide around them. It’s a vulnerable spot. We’ve already seen that in practice at the some other races and it turned me. And when it did, I was lucky that we didn’t have worse damage than we did. But I got in the wall. So, we’ll have to see if we can fix it. I was just thrilled with the car and thrilled with the team. I thought everything was going really, really good with the Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet. Unfortunately it didn’t end very well and we’ll just go to work and see what we have to do for the 500.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE RACING THAT’S GOING ON OUT THERE? “Really intense. It’s actually really fun from inside the car once you get going under green and it gets spread out a little bit and you’re just racing with four or six other guys. Those restarts are not a lot of fun. But no restart at Daytona or Talladega is a whole lot of fun. But once you get going, I think it’s pretty cool. Trying to figure out how to pass a guy and looking at your temps and trying to find a partner. There is a lot of strategy involved. You’ve got to drive the car, because it’s not easy. And we’re seeing some great finishes. I don’t know. It is kind of what it is and we’ve got to try to figure out how we’re going to get through 500 miles of it.”

ARE YOU FINE WITH IT, OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THEM MAKE A CHANGE OF SOME SORT? “I don’t think there are any changes that need to be made or can be made. Am I fine with it? It’s not what I prefer. I prefer to go back and race like we did in 2005 (laughs). But you know that’s not going to happen. But I think NASCAR has done pretty much all that they can do, but maybe they’ll do more. I don’t know. I just want to go race and I think we’ve got a fast race car. We’ve just got to get hooked up with the right guys and see what we can do from there.”

HOW MUCH DAMAGE IS THERE? “I don’t know. They’ll look at it. That right-front fender has got me concerned. We’ll go from there.”

2011 Bud Shootout In Car Audio

Rewind: The debut of the Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet produced a 6th place finish. Jeff Gordon fell to the back and drafted with Clint Bowyer late in the first 20-lap segment to finish 9th. His best lap in the first segment was over 202 miles per hour. Depsite the speed, the small two car drafts reduced the possibility of a “big one” eliminating several cars. In the second segment, Gordon worked almost exclusively with Kevin Harvick. He led 1 lap as he was pushed to the lead and then fell seconds behind. In the closing laps, his pairing was distantly behind the front two pairings. The finish was Gordon’s fourth consecutive top-6 finish in the Shootout.

Road ahead: The new pavement ushered in a different style of racing. The large 30-car drafting packs are gone. There will be little 3-wide racing in the Daytona 500. Instead, the two-car breakaways have now become standard operating procedure. The key will be running in the two-car draft without having the oil temperature spike too high. The closing rate of two cars working together will be the difference in the Daytona 500. As witnessed in the Shootout, two cars closing on the lead pack have a distinct advantage. The goal is to lead a two-car draft running in 3rd entering the final corner of the Daytona 500. And then find a way around the leader without causing chaos.

JG’s comments: On paired racing “It’s interesting. It has its own excitement and interest that’s all new that all of us are trying to get adjusted to. But it’s wild out there; it really is. It’s a lot harder than it looks and it’s just trying to get the right guy to either push or push you. Right there at the end we had the right guy I thought, but he kept hitting the rev-limiter and every time he did he fell off me do I just having to back up to him and back up to him. We just couldn’t go anywhere. But we had a good, fast race car so I was excited about that.”

It seems like this is a whole new learning process “Oh, yeah; for everybody (including) the fans, for NASCAR, for us, it’s pretty crazy.”
