June 21 – – The picturesque rolling hills of Northern California saw some of Jeff Gordon’s fiercest racing of the season as he posted a battle-tested 5th place finish. Gordon had several dust-ups with competitors on the track in a race that came down to Marcos Ambrose’s mental error under a late race caution. Ambrose slowed on the track and failed to maintain pace car speed, which allowed Jimmie Johnson to take the lead and his fourth win of the season.

Gordon started 5th and held the spot in the opening laps, save for a damaged rear bumper due to Marcos Ambrose’s aggressiveness. Gordon ceded the spot to Ambrose on lap 6. He then followed Ambrose past Kasey Kahne at the exit of the chute. The first caution waved on lap 10 after Clint Bowyer spun in the esses and Jamie McMurray was caught in the chain-reaction. Gordon slipped to 7th on the restart, but regrouped to take 6th from Martin Truex on lap 17. Three laps later he moved to the inside of Kevin Harvick to re-enter the top-5. Gordon then closed in and passed Tony Stewart with an inside move in turn 11. Gordon took 3rd from Kurt Busch on lap 25 by outbraking him into turn 11.

Gordon moved into the runner-up spot on lap 26 when Ambrose came to pit road for a green flag stop. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 33 and was passed by Juan Pablo Montoya exiting the pits — lending credence to a misjudgement on the tachometer in the #24 car. After the stops cycled through the field, Gordon ran in 7th place. He took 6th from Kurt Busch on lap 47 as his best lap times came on older tires. He moved back into the top-5 one lap later with a move around Montoya. Gordon ran 4th when Mattias Ekstrom in the 83 car came to pit road. He took 3rd when Ambrose came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 53. The second caution waved on lap 58 for Dave Blaney’s car stopping on the track. Gordon came to pit road since he was 13 laps short of making it on one more stop. He was the 3rd car to exit the pits and restarted in 9th due to 6 cars staying out.

On the restart, Gordon was tapped in the right rear by Montoya who made an aggressive move at the exit of the chute. Gordon gained 2 spots but complained of a potential tire issue. One lap later at the exit of the chute, Gordon pushed into Ekstrom, who spun David Ragan. Gordon lightly hit the front of Ragan’s car going by. In turn 11, Gordon moved to the inside and spun Truex entering the corner. He fell to 8th when Montoya went by. On lap 64, the caution waved for Brad Keselowski’s off-course excursion in turn 10. Gordon had body damage on the left side of the car from the Ekstrom contact, and nose damage from hitting Truex. The restart created a chain-reaction mess and resulted in a red flag after six cars stacked up in the middle of the field. Truex, Denny Hamlin, Max Papis, Sam Hornish, and Regan Smith were among those collected in the melee. Truex vowed fire and brimstone revenge on Gordon next week at Loudon while being interviewed by the media. Gordon turned off the engine in 7th place for the red-flag delay. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 5th on lap 67.

Gordon moved to 4th on lap 70, but was distantly behind Jimmie Johnson, Ambrose, and Kevin Harvick at the front of the field. He came to pit road for his final green flag stop on lap 79. A caution for Joey Logano’s spin (off of Montoya’s front bumper) slowed the field on lap 86. Gordon restarted 9th with 24 laps to go. He moved to 7th before a caution with 18 to go for Ekstrom’s spin. A jam on the restart sent Gordon from 7th back to 10th. With 12 laps to go, Gordon bumped Elliott Sadler in turn 11, which sent Sadler into Bowyer. Gordon then moved up to 8th in the running order. Keselowski’s spin with 8 laps to go necessitated a caution after fluid was dropped at the exit of the chute. On the restart with 6 laps to go, Gordon eased his way around Kurt Busch to take the 6th spot exiting turn two. With 4 to go, Gordon moved to the inside and took 5th from Greg Biffle. He crossed the line in 5th and moved from 7th to 5th in the series standings.

June 14 – – Jeff Gordon turned in his usual solid performance at Michigan Speedway, but once again it wasn’t enough to procure a victory. Gordon finished 4th but did not lead a lap in a race dominated by Denny Hamlin, which produced another victory for Joe Gibbs Racing as they wrestle for supremecy in the sport with Hendrick Motorsports.

Gordon started 6th and dropped two spots in the opening laps. He regained his starting position by the first caution flag on lap 18. Shortly after the restart he reported a loose handling condition and slipped back to 10th in the running order. A pit stop on lap 48 allowed crew chief Steve Letarte to make adjustments. Gordon moved to 6th on lap 53 and entered the top-5 on lap 63. A two-tire pit stop under caution on lap 98 moved him up to 3rd, before he lost a spot at the halfway point.

Gordon held the 4th position for the long green flag run, through a round of pit stops on lap 142. He remained distantly in 4th for the balance of the next run while trailing race leader Denny Hamlin by more than 10 seconds. Green flag stops came on laps 176-177 with Gordon holding the 4th spot. A debris caution on lap 182 removed Hamlin’s comfortable margin over the field. Gordon opted to stay out, thus putting a premium on track position over fresh tires. Gordon briefly moved to 3rd after the restart, before falling to 4th with 11 laps to go.

June 7 – – The momentum that Jeff Gordon and the DuPont team had in the early spring from several near-wins has become a thing of the past as Gordon has struggled over the last three races. Gordon posted a 32nd place finish at Pocono Raceway after battling loose handling issues for the majority of the event. A late race fuel gamble backfired and Gordon fell through the field after restarting in 6th with 29 laps to go, before being collected in a last lap crash.

A heavy rainstorm delayed the start by nearly 2 hours, and Gordon took the green flag under sunny skies just after 3pm/eastern time. He started 10th and moved up to 7th by the end of lap 2. On lap 6, he moved to the inside of Dale Earnhardt Jr and took 6th at the entrance to turn one. Gordon moved into the top-5 after passing Tony Stewart on lap 10. A competition caution on lap 15 brought the field to pit road with Gordon holding the 5th spot through the stops. After the restart he took 4th from Matt Kenseth on lap 22. He held 4th through a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 50. Gordon’s car was too loose on the long green flag run and crew chief Steve Letarte opted to drop the track bar during a green flag pit stop on lap 77. On lap 84, Gordon lost two spots to Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne while battling a loose handling car. Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 85 to send Gordon back to 7th, and Jeff Gordon sent Gordon to 8th on lap 92.

The second caution waved on lap 97 for debris. Gordon came to pit road for adjustments and departed in 8th place. He moved into 7th on the restart on lap 101, but fell to 10th after AJ Allmendinger, Greg Biffle, and Kasey Kahne passed within a two lap stretch on laps 104-105. Joey Logano took the 10th spot one lap later as Gordon’s fall through the field continued. Gordon later passed Biffle to re-enter the top-10. However, he dropped out of the top-10 on lap 121 when Earnhardt Jr went by on the frontstretch. Gordon pitted under the green flag on lap 132 for adjustments and ran 13th after the cycle of pit stops. A debris caution on lap 154 brought the leaders to pit road. A slow stop sent Gordon back to 17th place for the restart on lap 158. A caution for Casey Mears’ spin followed the restart and Gordon came down pit road to top off the fuel. Crew chief Steve Letarte told Gordon that he was 2 laps short, but some caution laps might help him stretch it to the end. Keyword: Might.

Gordon restarted in 24th position with 35 laps to go. On the restart, David Ragan moved up the track in turn one and clipped Jamie McMurray to bring out the caution. Most of the lead lap cars came to pit road, while Gordon remained out to gain track position. He restarted in 6th place with 29 laps to go. He lost positions to Matt Kenseth and Regan Smith, before Denny Hamlin passed to send Gordon back to 9th with 26 to go. A debris caution slowed the field and set up another restart. Gordon opted to stay on the track and lost positions on the restart. He dropped to 17th with 20 laps to go as his hopes for a solid finish began evaporating in a hurry. With 15 laps to go, he backslid to 21st place. With 2 to go, he was running 23rd when Joey Logano spun in turn three to set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon came to pit road for tires. Gordon restarted 26th and was collected in a major wreck on the final lap after drilling Kasey Kahne’s wrecked car. Gordon posted his worst finish at Pocono since a 34th place effort in 2006 — notable for the heavy wall contact he made after spinning into the turn one wall. His understated comment after the wreck was that it just hadn’t been his day. He exited the car under his own power and quickly headed east.

All Star Race In Car Audio

May 23 – – Jeff Gordon’s night in NASCAR’s All-Star race didn’t even make it to the end of the first lap. Gordon hit the wall coming off turn 4 on lap 1. The contact hindered handling on the DuPont Chevrolet for the remainder of the night. Gordon was later caught up in a wreck which resulted in a 20th place finish.

Gordon started 8th in the first segment and drilled the wall coming off turn four on the opening lap. He fell from 8th to 11th while battling a tight handling condition due to the wall contact. On lap 40, he moved into 10th where he finished the first segment. Following a pit stop, Gordon started 13th in the second segment of 20 laps. However, he was hindered by tight handling and dropped to 16th before passing Dale Earnhardt Jr for 15th with 5 laps remaining in the segment. Gordon came to pit road several times between segments for track bar adjustments and restarted at the rear of the field. He gained two spots in the opening laps of the third segment and ran 18th. In the closing stages he moved up to 13th where he finished the segment. During the 10-minute break, the Dupont team worked on the track bar and tow of the end in the hopes of improving the handling. Gordon started the final segment 13th and was collected in an opening lap wreck. Gordon hit Mark Martin’s spinning car and damaged the front of the car after hitting the infield wall. The wreck ended a disappointing night for Gordon in NASCAR’s All-Star race.

Dover Internatonal Speedway has been one of Jeff Gordon’s most vexing tracks over the last five years. Gordon struggled with handling issues during the Autism Speaks 400 and finished 11th. He dropped from 4th to 6th in the series standings.

Gordon started 15th and dropped two spots in the first 10 laps while battling a tight handling condition. After 20 laps he regrouped to take back the 15th spot from Jeff Burton. He ran in 14th when the first caution waved on lap 54 for Sam Hornish’s wall contact. Gordon exited pit road in 13th place. On lap 65, he took 11th from David Reutimann and set his sights on the top-10. Twelve laps later, he entered the top-10 with a pass on Denny Hamlin. On lap 90, he took 9th from Mark Martin as his steady climb continued. By the 100-lap mark, Gordon was up to 7th. However, the car went to the tight side and Gordon dropped to 8th on lap 115. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 135. He battled a tight condition and dropped to 9th before Marcos Ambrose hit the wall to bring out the caution on lap 164. Gordon exited in 10th place after the crew removed a spring rubber to loosen the car up.

At the 200-lap mark, Gordon had slipped to 12th and complained about the handling to crew chief Steve Letarte. He ran 12th when the caution waved on lap 22 for Marcos Ambrose’s cut tire. He left pit road in 15th place and had moved to 13th when a caution for Sam Hornish’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 245. Gordon opted for a two tire change and gained four spots on pit road, departing in 8th place. Two drivers stayed out and Gordon restarted in 10th on lap 249. The handling didn’t improve and Gordon dropped to 13th before the next caution flag on lap 276. With 108 to go, Gordon had moved up to 9th place. Five laps later, he fell to 12th after a brief altercation with Greg Biffle in turn one. Gordon came to pit road for his final pit stop with 36 laps to go. He ran 11th but was distantly behind race leader Kyle Busch in the closing stages. Busch went on to win his second race of the season and 18th of his career.

May 8 – – Another week and another close call for Jeff Gordon in the hopes of breaking his year-long winless drought. Gordon finished 4th in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway after leading a race-high 111 laps. Gordon’s fate was sealed with a late-race mental error coming onto pit road and then an ill-timed caution flag. Nevertheless, his seventh straight top-5 at Darlington vaulted him to 4th in the NASCAR points standings.

Gordon started 2nd and wasted no time heading to the front by passing Jamie McMurray off turn four at the end of the first lap. Brian Vickers ran Gordon down and took the lead on lap 38. The first caution waved on lap 47 for Michael McDowell’s wall contact in turn two. The leaders came to pit road with Gordon holding the runner-up position. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 4th behind McMurray, Vickers, and Jeff Burton. Gordon took 3rd from Burton just before Joey Logano spun off turn four to bring out the second caution flag of the event. Gordon took 2nd from Vickers on the restart but lost the spot to Denny Hamlin on lap 67. The caution waved on lap 83 for Martin Truex and Jimmie Johnson getting sideways in turn four, which brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon opted for two tires and departed in the 3rd position.

On lap 90, Gordon dove under McMurray to take 2nd place off turn four. He then closed in and passed Tony Stewart for the race lead on lap 91. Gordon led until Danny Hamlin took the lead on lap 141 after Gordon battled lapped traffic. Gordon pitted during a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 147. Gordon ran 5 seconds behind Hamlin after the cycle of stops. Sam Hornish’s wall contact slowed the field and the leaders came to pit road on lap 174. A two-tire change followed and Gordon was 2nd off of pit road. A few laps after the restart, Jimmie Johnson and AJ Allmendinger wrecked in turn three. After an extended track clean-up, Gordon battled Kyle Busch for position on lap 190. The next caution came at lap 201 for Tony Stewart’s spin. Gordon came to pit road for a 2-tire change on the left side, and restarted in 12th place after 9 cars stayed on the track. Gordon was unhappy with the handling, but patiently worked his way back into the top-10 with 150 laps to go. A debris caution with 140 to go brought the leaders to pit road with Gordon in 9th place. Crew chief Steve Letarte opted for right side tires and Gordon departed in the 3rd position. He passed David Reutimann for the runner-up spot, and reeled in Jeff Burton for the race lead with 107 laps to go.

Gordon extended to a 4 second lead before Bobby Labonte and David Gilliland wrecked to bring out the caution with 86 laps to go. He changed four tires and dropped to 4th on the restart. With 65 to go, he took 3rd from Jamie McMurray, but ran distantly behind Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin. Gordon and Burton slowly tracked down Busch and Gordon moved to 2nd with 55 to go. Ten laps later, Burton passed Gordon for 2nd place. Gordon slowed to come to pit road for a green flag stop, but missed the pit road entry. On his second try, he was caught on pit road when a caution flag waved. Gordon dropped to the last car on the lead lap. He restarted in 11th with 20 laps to go. Within three laps he moved to 8th, and took 7th from Ryan Newman with 15 to go. Gordon took 6th from Kyle Busch with 12 to go, and passed Kevin Harvick for 5th four laps later. He took 4th from Juan Pablo Montoya in the closing stages, but was distantly behind race winner Denny Hamlin, Jamie McMurray, and Kurt Busch at the finish.

“There were moments when we were awesome,” Gordon said. “On two tires we were great, on four we struggled. I just didn’t get slowed down good enough (coming to pit road). I don’t like making mistakes like that. If we got out front, I think we had something for them. But I’m happy that we drove up through there and got fourth.”

May 2 – – The scene was all too familiar to Jeff Gordon fans. Their driver was leading the race in the closing stages — and pulling away. However, a late race caution flag at Richmond International Raceway wiped out Gordon’s lead in the Crown Royal 400, and he eventually lost the top spot with just five laps remaining.  

Gordon started 4th and passed Jimmie Johnson for the 3rd position on lap 2. Three laps later he took the runner-up spot from David Reutimann. He held the second position until the first caution on lap 45 for Joe Nemechek’s cut tire. The field came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 4th place after swinging wide to exit his stall because of Denny Hamlin directly in front. On the restart, Gordon moved to the outside line and took 3rd from Jamie McMurray. He took 2nd from Kevin Harvick on lap 62 but ran distantly behind race leader Kyle Busch on the long green flag run. Gordon inherited the lead when Busch came to pit road on lap 143. Two laps later, Gordon came to pit road for tires and gave up the top spot. When the stops cycled through, Busch remained as the leader with Gordon in 2nd place. A debris caution on lap 154 brought the leaders back to pit road with just 9 cars on the lead lap. Gordon exited in 3rd place after a four-tire change.  

On the restart, Gordon immediately took the 2nd position from Clint Bowyer on lap 162. Debris on the backstretch necessitated a caution flag on lap 171. Pit stops followed and Gordon exited in 3rd behind Ryan Newman who took two tires, and Busch. On the restart, Gordon dove low to pass Newman and ran side by side with Busch for the race lead. Busch held the top spot, and Jeff Burton took the 2nd position from Gordon on lap 180. Gordon passed Busch for 2nd on lap 240 and closed to less than 1.5 seconds behind Burton for the race lead. On lap 250, Gordon got a run off turn four and took the lead from Burton. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 268 and held the lead through the cycle. Gordon continued to lead the race and came to pit road for a green flag pit stop with 37 laps to go. The complexion of the race changed with 34 laps to go when Elliott Sadler cut a tire and spun on the frontstretch.  

Gordon stayed out and started on the inside with 23 laps to go. He pulled away to the lead, but David Ragan’s spin with 21 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon led the field to the restart with 15 to go, and hauled the mail into turn one to get the lead. With 11 to go, Sam Hornish destroyed his car on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon and Kyle Busch came to the restart with 5 laps to go. Busch took the lead on the outside line and Gordon washed up the track in turn three battling Kevin Harvick for the runner-up spot. Busch pulled away to win his first race of the season. With the runner-up finish, Gordon moved from 10th to 6th in the series points standings.

April 25 – – Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson did their best to throw ice water on what many viewed as a simmering fued after the race at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, that ice water quickly heated back to a boil as the drivers found each other on the track at an inopportune time at Talladega Superspeedway. Gordon was forced onto the apron with 7 laps to go by Johnson, and was then swept up in a wreck. Gordon finished the event in 22nd place. “The 48 is testing my patience,” said Gordon, in reference to his teammate. “It takes a lot to make me mad and I am pissed right now.” At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jamie McMurray in the tri-oval on the final lap to win his 12th career race.

Gordon started 5th and stayed on the inside line at the outset. He fell back to 27th place by lap 5 and ran in a second draft behind the leaders. On lap 7, he radioed that the lead pack was beginning to get strung out, and he would try and re-join the fray. Two laps later he climbed to the 19th position in the lead draft. He climbed into the top-10 on lap 15 behind a draft from Jimmie Johnson. Gordon slipped back to 14th before the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon restarted 13th after taking four tires. On lap 26, he hooked up in a tight draft with Jeff Burton and moved to 8th place. He stayed behind Burton and moved up to 5th on lap 27, before the outside line powered past. Gordon dropped to 22nd on lap 33 after choosing the wrong drafting line. He remained in the second draft for the next 15 laps.

On lap 48, Gordon worked with Tony Stewart in the second draft back in 24th position. The pair worked out a drafting arrangement to move up in the running order. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 65. After the stops cycled through, he ran in 20th place on the low line before drafting back into the top-10. The caution waved on lap 76 when Michael Waltrip hit the wall off turn four. Denny Hamlin spun toward the infield grass in the chain reaction incident. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for left side tires and exited pit road in 3rd place. He took the lead of the race on lap 80 and ran in a tight draft with Elliott Sadler. Two laps later, Sadler was pushed into the lead by Kurt Busch. The caution waved on lap 84 after Johnny Sauter was turned sideways in the tri-oval. He bounced off Busch and Waltrip, while collecting Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard in the melee.

On the restart, Gordon pushed David Reutimann to the top spot. On lap 90, Gordon jumped to the high side to take the lead. However, his time at the front was short lived as the middle line powered past and pushed him out of the top-10 within seconds. Ten laps later he was in danger of losing the draft after he fell to 30th. Regan Smith’s blown engine on lap 100 brought the caution and allowed Gordon to make up the distance. Gordon spent the next 25 laps running in 24th with Mark Martin. With 60 to go, he hooked up with Martin and moved to 15th. Three laps later, he got a drafting push from Johnson to move into the top-5. However, he was hung in the middle line and lost positions. He fell back to 30th and ran there until green flag pit stops with 42 laps to go. Gordon changed two tires and ran 15th after the stops. With 30 laps to go, he moved to the front of the field for a single lap, before dropping back in the draft. With 12 laps to go, Bobby Labonte spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 17th place.

On the restart, Gordon worked with Mark Martin to move into the top-10. However, with 7 laps to go, Gordon moved low on the backstretch and was forced onto the apron by Jimmie Johnson’s late move. Gordon slipped back after cracking the throttle and was collected in a wreck on the frontstretch after Jeff Burton hit the wall and spun into Gordon’s path. The DuPont crew made repairs and Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap due to a wreck involving Johnson. Gordon was distantly behind the final battle for the lead as Harvick won in a photo finish. Gordon dropped to 10th in the series points standings, and trails Johnson by 193.

April 19 – – There are few moral victories in racing, and rarely would a 31st place finish qualify in that category, but Jeff Gordon made a loud statement in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.  Gordon led 124 laps, took no prisoners while racing a teammate, and looked to be in sound position for his first victory in more than a year.  However, a late race wreck coming off turn four destroyed the National Guard Special Forces Chevrolet and left Gordon with his first DNF of the season.

Gordon started 12th and entered the top-10 on lap 21 with a pass on eventual winner Denny Hamlin. He steadily worked through traffic by passing Kurt Busch for 9th place on lap 40, and took 8th place from Kasey Kahne two laps later. He entered the top-5 for the first time on lap 48 by getting around Kyle Busch, and took 4th from Clint Bowyer on lap 55. An adjustment during a pit stop under caution on lap 77 moved Gordon up to 3rd in the running order. He dropped to 12th on lap 115 after pitting while others stayed on the track. On the restart, Gordon worked his way back toward the front of the field and gained six spots by lap 120. He re-entered the top-5 on lap 126 with a pass on Kurt Busch, and took the runner-up spot five laps later. He tracked down and passed Dale Earnhardt Jr for the race lead on lap 137. By lap 150, Gordon had extended to a 3-second lead. Gordon lost the lead during a pit stop sequence, but regained it from Earnhardt Jr on lap 182.

Gordon swapped the lead briefly with Jimmie Johnson with 100 laps to go. Gordon pulled up to the rear of Johnson’s car in turn four which loosened Johnson’s car to the point where he climbed the hill in the corner to save the car. As Gordon pulled low on the fronstretch, Johnson turned into the right side of Gordon’s car. The contact eventually resulted in a flat tire for Johnson and stirred ill-will by both drivers over the in-car radio. Gordon moved into the lead and maintained a comfortable distance as the laps wound down. However, David Reuitimann’s blown engine with 24 laps remaining slowed the field. Gordon opted for four tires and restarted in 8th place. He made his way to 7th on the inside of Tony Stewart coming off turn four with 17 laps to go. Stewart got loose and tried to save his car. He touched the right side of Gordon’s car, which further sent his car out of shape. Stewart then clipped the right rear of Gordon’s car sending him into the frontstretch wall. More than six other drivers were collected in the melee. Gordon exited his car and immediately went to Stewart’s wrecked car for an explanation. Stewart assumed blame for the wreck after viewing the replay. “It was my fault, I feel bad about doing something stupid like that,” Stewart said. “I didn’t plan on getting loose, but it is 100 percent my fault. It wasn’t (Jeff’s) fault, obviously. I got a chance to see it in the infield care center, it is definitely my fault. I apologize to all the teams and drivers that got caught up and their fans for it. We had a really good car there and just a shame that it happened let alone to some of your teammates like that.”

April 11 – – For the second consecutive race, Jeff Gordon had victory within his sights while lining up with the lead on a final green/white/checkered flag restart.  Unfortunately for Gordon, the ending at Phoenix International Raceway mirrored the disappointment of Martinsville Speedway.  However, this time around, there was no contact from behind. Rather, it was the driver’s error that opened the door for Ryan Newman to take the lead (and the victory) away with 2 laps to go.  Nevertheless, Gordon posted a runner-up finish and moved to 5th in the series points standings.

Gordon started 10th and moved around Carl Edwards on the opening lap to take a spot.  On lap 2, he passed Martin Truex and Marcos Ambrose to take 7th place.  Ten laps later he took over 6th from Dale Earnhardt Jr.  The first caution waved on lap 15 after Kurt Busch got loose entering turn one and took out Kasey Kahne on the outside.  Pit stops ensued with Gordon losing a spot and exiting in 7th place.   A lap after the restart, Jamie McMurray spun in turn three off the front bumper of Clint Bowyer.  Gordon restarted in 8th on lap 30 on the outside of Matt Kenseth.  He moved to 6th on lap 31 before AJ Allmendinger took a position.  On lap 39, Jimmie Johnson went by sending Gordon back to 8th before he regrouped and took 7th from Ryan Newman.  The third caution came on lap 56 after Brian Vickers wrecked in turn three. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 6th place.

When racing resumed, Gordon bided his time in 7th place behind Sam Hornish and AJ Allmendinger.  On lap 82, Gordon moved to the outside of Allmendinger and raced side by side with Dr. Lynne’s husband for a lap before taking 6th place.  Kenseth passed Gordon on lap 88 to take over 6th and send Gordon back to the 7th position.  He moved back into 6th on lap 110 after getting around Hornish.  On lap 133, Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop just before Kurt Busch cut a tire.   The caution waved three laps later as the pit sequence fully cycled through.  Gordon fell to 8th due to the tight conditions on pit road and coming in slightly sideways to his stall.  He gained two spots on the restart and closed in on Kenseth for 5th on lap 155.  However, Gordon’s car tightened up and Kyle Busch took a spot on lap 161.  He moved into the top-5 on lap 188 after getting around Joey Logano.  A caution for Dave Blaney’s blown engine brought the lead lap cars to pit road.  Gordon lost six spots and restarted in 11th.  He dropped to 12th before rallying back into the top-10 with 165 laps to go.

With 107 to go, Gordon took 8th from Logano, and then passed Kenseth for 7th with 94 to go.  As the green flag run continued, he tracked down and passed Kevin Harvick for 6th.   A caution flag brought the leaders to pit road with 59 laps to go.  Gordon gained two positions and departed in 4th place.  On the restart, Gordon used the outside line to move up to 3rd but ran distantly behind Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson for the race lead.  As the laps wound down, he made some headway on catching Johnson for 2nd.  With four laps to go, Scott Riggs hit the wall to bring out the caution and set up a green/white/checkered finish.  The leaders came to pit road with Gordon opting for a two-tire change and departed pit road with the race lead.  On the restart, Newman powered on the inside past Gordon for the race lead after the leader spun the tires.
