Jeff Gordon started from the pole and hooked up in a tight draft with Mark Martin. The duo moved ahead of the field and Gordon led the first 9 laps. The pair was overtaken by Denny Hamlin on lap 10. Gordon and Martin dropped to 32nd and 33rd after making a swap among themselves. They worked their way up to 27th before Landon Cassill hit Brian Vickers on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag on lap 28. Gordon came to pit road out of sequence with Martin and restarted near the rear of the field. Gordon and Martin ran in 25th/26th for most of the next 50 laps. A multi-car wreck in turn three on lap 90 eliminated Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, David Ragan, and Trevor Bayne. Gordon and Martin ran together in 25th before a debris caution with 60 laps to go. Gordon and Martin ran well behind the next incident with 49 laps to go when Kyle Busch spun and collected Matt Kenseth. The pair moved up to 15th/16th with 35 laps to go. Gordon restarted 21st with 20 to go. With 15 laps to go, Martin pushed Gordon up to the top-5. After Ryan Newman’s spin slowed the field, Gordon restarted 3rd with Martin in 5th with 11 laps to go. On the final lap, Martin pushed Gordon to the lead on the backstretch, but Clint Bowyer edged ahead on the upper groove. Gordon implored Martin to protect the bottom of the track, but his teammate was unable to do so. As they exited turn four, the combination of Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr moved to the low line and edged ahead of Gordon and Bowyer at the finish line. Gordon posted his third top-5 finish of the season with the 3rd place effort.

Road ahead: After an off-weekend for Easter, the series will head to the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway. Gordon’s pre-season test notes from Pikes Peak — as well as the Phoenix victory — should bode well for the Richmond chassis set-up.

October 31 – – If Jimmie Johnson wins his fifth NASCAR title in three weeks by less than 20 points, he can credit his teammate Jeff Gordon for an assist with a push in the final stages at Talladega Superspeedway. As Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick dueled for the race victory, Gordon stayed glued to Johnson’s bumper and pushed him through traffic to ensure a top-10 finish.

Gordon started 31st and moved to 24th by lap 2 with drafting help from Kyle Busch. However, he dropped out of line and fell to 36th on lap 5. Gordon drafted with Jimmie Johnson distantly behind the lead back in 27th place for nearly 15 laps. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 40. Gordon cracked the top-10 for the first time after the stops as he ran in 9th place. He moved to 7th with drafting help from Busch on lap 44. Gordon soon faded back with Johnson to avoid the tight drafting pack. Gordon ran in a line with Johnson and Denny Hamlin for 5 laps as the trio ran in the mid-20’s. The first caution waved on lap 70 for AJ Allmendinger’s spin following contact from Brad Keselowski.

Gordon gained 6 spots on pit road and restarted 19th on lap 74. Within a few laps, he dropped back to 26th in a drafting line with Johnson and Busch. At the halfway point, Gordon ran 27th in a line behind the lead drafting pack. He pitted under green for right side tires on lap 114 and returned to the drafting line in 9th place. Once again, he dropped back into the mid-20’s before the second caution waved with 55 laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr bump drafted Jeff Burton in turn 3, which resulted in Burton getting loose and taking both himself and Earnhardt Jr into the wall. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for four tires. He restarted 24th after topping off the fuel before the green flag with 50 to go. Two laps later, Marcos Ambrose spun and collected Kevin Harvick and Bill Elliott. Gordon held his line on the low side of the track to avoid the wreck. He came to pit road for tires and restarted 8th with 43 laps to go.

He dropped back in traffic to run in the mid-20’s, within a distance to draft with Johnson in the closing stages. However, Gordon hooked up in a draft with Greg Biffle and moved up to 16th with 22 laps to go. He fell to 20th on lap 168 as Johnson lurked just behind him. With 16 laps to go, crew chief Chad Knaus ordered Johnson to make his move. On cue, Gordon dove to the inside with Johnson locked in a tight draft behind him. With 13 to go, Gordon and Johnson entered the top-5 on the low line. Gordon took the race lead on the backstretch with 12 laps to go — due entirely to Johnson’s drafting push. However, one lap later, Gordon slowed on the track with engine problems. A debris caution with 10 laps to go slowed the field with Gordon reporting the engine was running better. With 3 to go, Johnson fell back and Gordon provided drafting help thus allowing Johnson to keep his momentum. Johnson finished 7th — two spots ahead of Denny Hamlin which allowed him to extend his points lead. Gordon finished 8th after a wreck on the final lap slowed the field. It was Gordon’s first top-10 at Talladega since he won in October 2007. However, Gordon’s focus has now shifted to 2011 as he trails by 207 points with just 3 races to go in the season.

April 25 – – Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson did their best to throw ice water on what many viewed as a simmering fued after the race at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, that ice water quickly heated back to a boil as the drivers found each other on the track at an inopportune time at Talladega Superspeedway. Gordon was forced onto the apron with 7 laps to go by Johnson, and was then swept up in a wreck. Gordon finished the event in 22nd place. “The 48 is testing my patience,” said Gordon, in reference to his teammate. “It takes a lot to make me mad and I am pissed right now.” At the front of the field, Kevin Harvick passed Jamie McMurray in the tri-oval on the final lap to win his 12th career race.

Gordon started 5th and stayed on the inside line at the outset. He fell back to 27th place by lap 5 and ran in a second draft behind the leaders. On lap 7, he radioed that the lead pack was beginning to get strung out, and he would try and re-join the fray. Two laps later he climbed to the 19th position in the lead draft. He climbed into the top-10 on lap 15 behind a draft from Jimmie Johnson. Gordon slipped back to 14th before the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon restarted 13th after taking four tires. On lap 26, he hooked up in a tight draft with Jeff Burton and moved to 8th place. He stayed behind Burton and moved up to 5th on lap 27, before the outside line powered past. Gordon dropped to 22nd on lap 33 after choosing the wrong drafting line. He remained in the second draft for the next 15 laps.

On lap 48, Gordon worked with Tony Stewart in the second draft back in 24th position. The pair worked out a drafting arrangement to move up in the running order. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 65. After the stops cycled through, he ran in 20th place on the low line before drafting back into the top-10. The caution waved on lap 76 when Michael Waltrip hit the wall off turn four. Denny Hamlin spun toward the infield grass in the chain reaction incident. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for left side tires and exited pit road in 3rd place. He took the lead of the race on lap 80 and ran in a tight draft with Elliott Sadler. Two laps later, Sadler was pushed into the lead by Kurt Busch. The caution waved on lap 84 after Johnny Sauter was turned sideways in the tri-oval. He bounced off Busch and Waltrip, while collecting Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard in the melee.

On the restart, Gordon pushed David Reutimann to the top spot. On lap 90, Gordon jumped to the high side to take the lead. However, his time at the front was short lived as the middle line powered past and pushed him out of the top-10 within seconds. Ten laps later he was in danger of losing the draft after he fell to 30th. Regan Smith’s blown engine on lap 100 brought the caution and allowed Gordon to make up the distance. Gordon spent the next 25 laps running in 24th with Mark Martin. With 60 to go, he hooked up with Martin and moved to 15th. Three laps later, he got a drafting push from Johnson to move into the top-5. However, he was hung in the middle line and lost positions. He fell back to 30th and ran there until green flag pit stops with 42 laps to go. Gordon changed two tires and ran 15th after the stops. With 30 laps to go, he moved to the front of the field for a single lap, before dropping back in the draft. With 12 laps to go, Bobby Labonte spun on the backstretch to bring out the caution. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 17th place.

On the restart, Gordon worked with Mark Martin to move into the top-10. However, with 7 laps to go, Gordon moved low on the backstretch and was forced onto the apron by Jimmie Johnson’s late move. Gordon slipped back after cracking the throttle and was collected in a wreck on the frontstretch after Jeff Burton hit the wall and spun into Gordon’s path. The DuPont crew made repairs and Gordon received the free pass to get back on the lead lap due to a wreck involving Johnson. Gordon was distantly behind the final battle for the lead as Harvick won in a photo finish. Gordon dropped to 10th in the series points standings, and trails Johnson by 193.

November 2 – – Jimmie Johnson all but clinched his fourth consecutive Cup series championship with a 6th place finish at Talladega Superspeedway, in a race where he ran out of the lead pack in 30th for the balance of the day. Jeff Gordon took the opposite strategy and led the Amp Energy 500 on several occasions, but he ran out of fuel under caution with 3 laps to go. He was pushed back to pit road, but restarted deep in the field. Gordon was swept up in a last lap crash and now trails Johnson by more than 200 points with just three races remaining. “I’m glad we ran out of fuel when we did so we could get back out there and destroy our car,” Gordon said sarcastically after the race.

April 25 – – It should have stayed in mothballs. In the first race for the Pepsi Challenger in 1983, Darrell Waltrip drilled a dirt bank at Daytona Internaional Speedway, careened back on the track and hit the retaining wall. Twenty-six years later, Jeff Gordon’s day in the Pepsi Challenger was hindered by the same effect — a major wreck on the track. Gordon was involved in a lap 7 wreck at Talladega Superspeedway after being clipped by Matt Kenseth. The front and rear of the car was destroyed. Repairs were made and Gordon finished in 37th. He dropped to 2nd in the series points standings.

Post Crash Comments

IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU CAN GET THE CAR BACK OUT? “I think this is the same way this Pepsi Challenger ended up in ’83. So it sure didn’t look good. It was driving good. We were having a good time there. I was actually working well with Matt (Kenseth) getting up to the front through the middle. I am not really sure what happened. I was just kinda cruising along there in the middle. Matt got up there, I think behind, maybe the No. 11 and he went low and so I was just cruising on up the middle.

“Matt went down with the No. 1 car and I guess what it was, whoever that was on the inside, I don’t think, there just wasn’t enough room. He got underneath Matt, Matt came up and I was already there.

“The car is destroyed. That is Talladega. I don’t know if we are going to be able to fix that. I know these guys are going to work real hard to try and get it back out there and get some points. Just unfortunate.

“There are so many different grooves to race out there. Matt went low so I was just going to go up the middle, it had been working so well for us up to that point. Somebody got to the inside him and closed the door.

“Things were going well, we were having a good time. Just cruising up the middle. Matt got hooked up with the No. 1 car. They started to go low and I think somebody got inside of them just as I was getting to the outside or up the middle of Matt. I don’t if he knew I was there, didn’t know I was there or what happened. But, I just got squeezed and started a big wreck.

“I didn’t see anything out of line. There was nothing. I don’t think that wreck was caused by over aggressive driving. I mean, every race and every wreck I look to see what I could have done different. Looking back on it, I wish I would have just stayed behind Matt. But that is always hindsight. We’re sitting here. It is unfortunate. It is not obviously going to be the day we were looking for.”

Carl Edwards & Brad Keselowsk Final Lap Incident Video

Carl Edwards comments on the the final lap of the Aaron’s 499.  Edwards goes on to say that someone will get killed before Nascar changes the double yellow line rule.  Edwards blocked Keselowski coming to the checkered flag which resulted in Edwards getting turned around and flipped airborne into the fence in spectacular fashion by Ryan Newman.  There were 8 minor injuries to fans in that area of the crash.
