Jeff Gordon Martinsville Victory Lane Crowd Salute

Jeff Gordon Martinsville Victory Lane

In a day that stretched into night and a race marred by mayhem, Gordon passed AJ Allmendinger with 22 laps to go to win the Goody’s 500 on the sport’s most historic track. With the victory, Gordon’s very first of his final season, he is now guaranteed to be one of four racers who will compete for a championship in Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 22. It was his 9th victory at Martinsville and 93rd of his career.

In an atmosphere Gordon described as “surreal,” he was greeted in Victory Lane by friends and rivals, loudly cheered by the thousands of race fans who stayed to watch him bask in his moment of victory.

“Oh my gosh, I didn’t think they could get any better, but to win here at Martinsville in front of this crowd that stuck around,” said Gordon. “I tell you there’s nothing better than crossing the finish line and have that kind of reaction from the crowd. That reaction from my team, and to have my family come up … this is unbelievable. I feel like I’m dreaming right now. I’m afraid I’m going to wake up and this is not going to be true. We were just trying to do our best throughout the whole day.”

Crew chief Alan Gustafson, who has been through a lot of good and bad with Gordon, agreed with his driver’s gratitude of the fan appreciation. Last week, Gordon won the pole at Talladega; this week the race. Both times, it was to thunderous applause.

“We qualify on the pole, you can just hear the place (Talladega) erupt,” said Gustafson. “I don’t know how to describe the sensation. It’s just an amazing feeling. Then here the same way. You can hear the crowd. You don’t even have to really know what’s going on. You can hear the crowd and you can kind of figure it out.

“To me that’s one of the most satisfying things. It makes you feel really good. It makes you feel like you accomplished something that’s really special, to have the reaction from the crowd.”

The reactions of Gordon and Gustafson are understandable. On the whole, this has been a down year for Hendrick Motorsports, the team Gordon has driven for his entire career. Gordon is the lone Hendrick driver still left in the Chase and the Martinsville victory was the first for the team since July Fourth weekend, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. won at Talladega.

For most of the year, Gordon and Hendrick were eclipsed first by Joe Gibbs Racing, which has won 13 of 33 races, and then by Team Penske, which had Joey Logano win three in a row coming into Martinsville.

The Penske duo led 350 of 500 laps on Sunday before both drivers crashed — Brad Keselowski accidentally and Logano after getting run over by Matt Kenseth. Once they were out, the race became Gordon’s to win.

Afterward, Gordon was in disbelief. “It was just unreal. I mean that: unreal. I couldn’t believe that. I thought this could not be happening,” Gordon said. “I mean, it’s not that unusual for us to win a Martinsville race. That’s not what I’m talking about. It’s to be able to do it when so much is at stake, when you know that this is how you get to Homestead, to be one of those final four.

“For us to be a team that nobody, nobody, had picked to be able to make it to Homestead, I love that we just keep proving them wrong and finding a way to move on.” That he has. All the way to NASCAR’s biggest stage. In three weeks, we’ll see what he does when he gets there.

Jeff Gordon Talladega Crew Salute

Jeff Gordon finished 3rd at Talladega to advance to Round 3 of the NASCAR Chase. Gordon ran in the top-10 for most of the event, and tied his best finish of the 2015 season. He posted top-10 finishes in all 3 races in Round 2.

Gordon started on the pole and led the opening 8 laps before Dale Earnhardt Jr moved to the top spot. He dropped to 4th on the outside line on lap 10, before working with Joey Logano in a draft to move to 3rd. On lap 20, he moved to 2nd behind Earnhardt Jr in a single line with his Hendrick Motorsports teammates. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 41. He ran 5th on lap 44 on the outside line. Gordon ran there for the next 25 laps before being shuffled to 10th on lap 70. He elected to play it safe and dropped to 15th on lap 77, and came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 81. Gordon ran 8th at the halfway point.

On lap 105, he drafted with Kevin Harvick into the top-5. He ran 2nd on lap 120 when a cycle of green flag stops began. Gordon ran 5th on lap 125 in a single file draft. The first caution waved on lap 132 for Justin Allgaier’s engine. After a 2-tire change, Gordon restarted 4th on lap 139. With 40 to go, he ran in 10th place on the outside line. Five laps later he entered the top-5 in a draft with Jimmie Johnson. With 20 to go, Gordon ran 8th on the inside. He came to pit road for a gas only stop with 18 to go, and ran 10th in a single file line with 14 to go. With 5 to go, he drafted up to 5th place by pushing his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jamie McMurray’s blown engine brought out the caution with 4 to go to set up a green/white/checkered finish.

Gordon restarted 4th but the start was called off after Jimmie Johnson was spun prior to the start/finish line. The field regrouped for a second attempt with Gordon lined up in 4th behind Joey Logano on the outside line. Gordon was scored 3rd as drivers began wrecking just after the green flag waved. Gordon advanced to Round 3 of the NASCAR Chase.

JG’s comments
“Talladega can surprise you at any time. I actually had a lot of fun out there. We had an awesome car. It was so much fun battling up front, even if we got shuffled back a little bit I was able to drive up through there. I was looking forward to working with Dale Jr there at the end. When those guys swapped, I was like, ‘Man, this is going to be tough.’ I thought maybe my only chance was splitting Joey Logano, getting inside of him, getting 3-wide and maybe shuffling him out. I had no idea about all the crazy stuff behind me. I know the first green/white/checkered restart, I kind of misjudged it and I nailed the 22 and almost spun him out. Then they started stacking up behind us. So, crazy…absolutely crazy. But what a relief. I know my wife sitting at home was very relieved as well. We’re in. This season’s been a crazy season for us. Since the Chase started, the attitude of this team, the momentum, and execution. The things we weren’t doing earlier in the year, we’re doing them all right now at the right time. Watch out, we’ve got something for them these next 3 or 4 races.”

Jeff Gordon Windows 10 400 at Pocono 2015

After running mid-pack for most of the race at Pocono Raceway, Jeff Gordon pulled off a 3rd place finish after fuel strategy worked to the advantage of the #24 team. A green flag run to the finish following the final round of stops allowed Gordon to move up from 15th to 3rd in the final 3 laps as drivers pitted for fuel. Gordon tied Mark Martin for the most top-5 finishes (20) at Pocono.

Gordon started 9th and moved up to 7th by the end of the first lap. The first caution waved on lap 5 after Kasey Kahne spun off turn 3 and drilled the pit wall. After a 30-minute red flag for repairs to the pit wall, racing resumed on lap 8. Gordon took 6th from Tony Stewart on lap 13 and ran there when the competition caution waved on lap 15. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 4th place. He took 3rd from Austin Dillon prior to the next caution on lap 21 for Kevin Harvick’s blown engine. The next caution came on lap 28 after Ricky Stenhouse drilled the turn 1 wall. Gordon came to pit road for tires and fuel. Some drivers stayed on the track who had previously pitted, which sent Gordon to 23rd place for the restart. He re-entered the top-20 on lap 40 as drivers ahead began pitting under green. Gordon advanced as high as 2nd place during the pit sequence before coming to pit road on lap 59. The next caution came on lap 62 for a loose tire on pit road. Gordon restarted in 12th place on lap 65. However, on the restart, Gordon was shoved out of the groove and had to dramatically slow to avoid Kurt Busch’s spin in turn 1. He fell to 16th place for the restart on lap 71. Gordon ran 16th at the halfway point on lap 80.

Gordon moved up to 5th place during a green flag pit stop sequence. A caution for Alex Kennedy’s crash on lap 91 brought out the caution. Gordon pitted for tires and fuel and restarted in 16th place. He struggled on the restart and dropped to 21st place before rallying back to 19th on lap 100. He stayed out to lead a lap during a green flag pit sequence and came to pit road with 33 laps to go. As the laps wound down, Gordon moved up to 17th with 13 laps to go, and took 16th from Ryan Newman with 11 to go. With 4 to go, he moved into the top-15 with a move around Greg Biffle. As drivers ran out of fuel, Gordon moved into the top-5 and came across the line in 3rd place. It was his best finish since Bristol in April (span of 13 races). Gordon remains 12th in the NASCAR Chase standings with 5 races to go until the Chase begins.

JG’s comments
“It would be a long, long list if we talked to a bunch of people in the grandstands and myself, and everybody on pit road and probably people watching at home to find out who was more surprised [with the finish]. That was crazy. I’m so proud of (crew chief) Alan Gustafson and everybody on this team. We fought through a lot. We’ve been fighting hard. We just haven’t been getting the results. Today they stuck with a strategy and it played out. It wasn’t looking good at times, but boy, it sure looked good when we crossed the finish line and got the checkered flag.

Jeff Gordon’s final start in the All-Star Race netted a 4th place finish. Gordon started 9th in the first segment of the event. He moved up to 6th place by the end of lap 3. He dropped to 7th when Kurt Busch went by on lap 11. He battled tight handling and took 6th from Greg Biffle at the end of the first segment. The drivers came to pit road with Gordon exiting in 7th place. On the restart, Gordon used the inside line to his advantage and moved to 4th place on lap 27. He took 3rd from Denny Hamlin on lap 29 where he closed the second segment of the event. The crew changed four tires and Gordon restarted in 7th place due to some drivers opting for two tires. The inside line struggled at the start of the third segment after Joey Logano and Jamie McMurray made contact. Gordon slipped to 8th on lap 52. He took 7th from McMurray on lap 56. Two laps later he took 6th from Matt Kenseth where he concluded the third segment. Gordon exited pit road in 8th place after taking four tires. On the restart, he slipped to 10th before regrouping to take 9th on lap 79 from Joey Logano. Five laps later he took 8th from Kenseth. Gordon passed AJ Allmendinger to take 7th place on lap 89 where he finished the segment. The drivers came to pit road based on their average finish in the first 4 segments. Gordon came to pit road in 5th place based on the average finish. He exited pit road in 5th place for the restart of the final 10-lap segment.

On the restart, Gordon moved up to 4th behind Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Kurt Busch. As Hamlin pulled away to win, Gordon briefly battled with Kurt Busch for 3rd place before settling into 4th where he finished the event.

JG’s comments
“Having Ingrid, the kids, my mom, and my dad there (pre-race) was amazing. That was a surprise to me. I asked my parents, ‘Why are you guys here? I never see you at driver introductions.’ So, that was special. Something I’ll never forget. We had a really solid performance overall as a team. I’m really excited about that performance that we can take to next week’s 600. I think our car is pretty good and we can make it a little better.”

ON THE RACE
“Homestead will affect me a lot more as it probably will be my last race. It’s awesome to see all the fans and all the things they did on the track. But as far as really putting it all in perspective – it sinking in that that was my last All-Star race – I wasn’t thinking like that. I was focused in on the race. We were solid. I was pretty happy with the performance of the car. It’s so hard to get that track position that you need. A couple of guys were able to make some moves and maneuver through. We made a few but not many. It was all about lining up on the inside. When we lined up on the inside a few times and made up some spots When we lined up on the outside we lost some. At the end we were on the inside (passing three cars) and had a decent average. We were decent and got a fourth-place finish for it.”

Jeff Gordon posted a 4th place finish at Kansas Speedway which surely was not indicative of how the night seemed to be playing out. Gordon battled handling issues for most of the night, and at one point was less than a second from going a lap down. However, a well-timed caution flag kept him on the lead lap, and a late call to stay on the track during a caution period gave him the chance to post his 3rd top-5 in the last 4 races at Kansas. Gordon started 11th and slipped to 14th on the first lap before regrouping to take 11th on lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 4 for JJ Yeley’s spin. At the competition caution on lap 25, Gordon ran in 13th place. The crew changed 2 tires and Gordon restarted in 10th place. After dropping to 12th, he regrouped to enter the top-10 on lap 44. Gordon took a spot from Tony Stewart to move up to 8th, prior to Matt Kenseth passing to take 9th on lap 61. He battled handling issues and fell out of the top-10 on lap 70. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 80. Following stops he ran in 14th place as race leader Martin Truex closed within a second to put him a lap down. However, Jeb Burton’s spin on lap 93 brought out the caution to keep Gordon on the lead lap. Pit stops followed with Gordon gaining 4 spots to restart in 10th place. Rain began falling and the race was red-flagged shortly after 8:30pm/eastern.

The race resumed after 11pm/eastern following rain and track drying. He ran between 7th-13th over the next 100 laps as the crew made adjustments during caution perods. With 79 to go, Gordon stayed out during a caution to move up to 4th for the restart. He took 3rd after the restart before a caution for Erik Jones’ wall contact with 71 to go. He closed in on Kyle Larson for 2nd place before a caution for Denny Hamlin’s cut tire with 60 to go. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires. However, a problem on the right front put him back in 11th place for the restart. Handling became an issue back in traffic as he fell to 13th with 45 to go. Gordon moved to 12th with 30 to go. He remained there until Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact brought out a caution with 11 laps to go. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 4th place with 6 to go. He held the spot and posted his 7th top-10 finish in the last 8 races.

JG’s comments
“It was a really solid top-five finish there. I’m really proud of that. That was not easy. Track position meant so much and we had it and then we lost it and it was nice to get it back there at the end and get a decent restart and finish fourth.”

Jeff+Gordon+Food+City+500+2015 (3)

Jeff Gordon posted his best finish of the 2015 season with a 3rd place effort in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The event concluded more than 9 hours after its scheduled start time because of persistent rain in East Tennesee. Gordon finished behind race winner Matt Kenseth and runner-up Jimmie Johnson after battling back from 2 laps down. It was his 5th consecutive top-10 finish — the first time Gordon has scored 5 straight top-10’s since June 2010. Steady rain delayed the start of the race by more than an hour. Jeff’s children, Ella and Leo, gave the command for drivers to start engines just before 2:30 pm. Gordon started 23rd and moved to 19th within 10 laps. The first caution waved on lap 18 for a wreck involving Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. The crash moved Gordon up to 17th place and — more importantly — gave him an entry out of his pit box with Logano going several laps down. Rain picked up once again and the event was red flagged at 2:40 pm. After nearly four more hours of rain and subsequent track drying, the race resumed just before 7 pm.

Gordon restarted in 16th place on lap 35. He used the high line to his advantage and moved to 12th by lap 40. Gordon remained there as the competition caution slowed the field on lap 60. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 14th after some drivers opted to stay out. Gordon advanced to 11th by lap 70, and entered the top-10 with a move around Sam Hornish on lap 77. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran 7th after passing his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He took 6th from Greg Biffle on lap 133. The next caution came on lap 168 for dampness on the track. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarting in 7th place.

Gordon dropped to 8th on lap 200 and radioed to his crew about a loose wheel. He came to pit road for a 4-tire change on lap 206. He rejoined the race in 29th place, 2 laps down. Gordon moved up to 25th place by lap 225, but remained 2 laps down. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 23rd place, and was the first car 2 laps down. On fresher tires, Gordon passed race leader Kevin Harvick on lap 254 to get a lap back. However, Carl Edwards went by Gordon to put him 2 laps down just prior to a caution flag for passing rain on lap 262. Gordon took the wave around and moved to 19th place, 1 lap down. The rain picked up and the red flag was displayed just after 8 pm. The field went back under the yellow flag 20 minutes later. A caution for Kurt Busch’s spin into Jimmie Johnson on lap 278 brought out the caution. Following a pit sto, Gordon moved up to 18th — the first car one lap down.

Gordon got back on the lead lap when the caution waved on lap 311 when Johnson spun out Jeb Burton. In the melee, Kevin Harvick made contact with David Ragan, which eliminated both drivers from contention. Gordon restarted in 16th place on lap 325. The next caution waved on lap 344 for debris. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 16th place on lap 350. The next caution came on lap 367 when Landon Cassill drilled the wall head-on after contact from Kyle Larson. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 12th after several cars pitted. On lap 382, Gordon used the high line to move up to 9th place. Two laps later, he advanced to 7th place and closed in on Carl Edwards for 6th. He moved to 6th place on lap 437 when Kyle Larson pitted from the race lead. One lap later, he moved around Edwards to take 5th place. Gordon took 4th from Jamie McMurray on lap 446, and two laps later passed Ryan Newman for 3rd. Edwards regrouped and took a spot from Gordon on lap 455. With 29 to go, McMurray cut a tire and a chain reaction wreck occurred in turn 4 as Josh Wise and Clint Bowyer piled in.

Gordon stayed out and moved up to 3rd place when Kurt Busch pitted from the lead. On the restart with 20 laps to go, Austin Dillon used the high line to take a spot from Gordon. A multi-car wreck with 17 to go brought the caution after Tony Stewart turned Kasey Kahne. Gordon lined up on the outside line for the restart with 9 laps to go. Gordon moved to 2nd place behind Matt Kenseth. Edwards lost control underneath Gordon and hit the wall. Kurt Busch drilled the back of Edwards, and the melee collected Paul Menard and Justin Allagaier. On the green/white/checkered restart, Gordon lined up on the inside of Kenseth. Johnson was able to get past Gordon on the restart. Gordon crossed the line in 3rd place, his best effort of the 2015 season.

JG’s comments
“That was tough. On such old tires you have to carry momentum to the line and not spin the tires. Then you have guys on fresher tires behind you. I thought I got a good restart, as good as I could ask for to be on the bottom lane. I’m pretty happy to come home 3rd. Yeah, at one time it looked like we could maybe get 2nd. That was just chaos. For us, it was chaos the entire race. We had a really good car. We had a loose wheel and had to come from behind. I didn’t think we had the best car on that last long run. I thought Carl was pretty good, Kurt was really strong. We were building a top-5 out of it. I certainly didn’t like NASCAR running us around under caution for so long (in the rain). I thought we were going to run out of gas. I hate it for the 3 team. Happy for Matt. I think he deserved it. They had a good car and it would have been a shame if he had run out of gas. So, great job to him.”

In the end, Jeff Gordon missed advancing to the championship race by a single point. Gordon finished 2nd to Kevin Harvick at Phoenix International Raceway. But it was Ryan Newman’s 11th place finish that eliminated Gordon from title contention this season. Harvick, Newman, Denny Hamlin, and Joey Logano advanced to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the championship race on November 16. Gordon started 7th and slipped back to 9th in the opening laps. He battled handling issues before a debris caution slowed the field on lap 30. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 7th place after a two-tire change. Gordon took 6th from Kyle Busch on lap 49, and tracked down Brad Keselowski to take 5th on lap 63. His forward march continued as he took 4th from Matt Kenseth on lap 70. The next caution waved on lap 80 for Casey Mears’ spin on the backstretch. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and restarted in 3rd place. He dropped to 6th on lap 94 after Kenseth and Keselowski went by. Kyle Busch passed on lap 95 prior to a debris caution. Gordon came to pit road for four tires and a wedge adjustment, and restarted in 20th place on lap 100. He entered the top-15 on lap 112 after moving past Kasey Kahne. He ran 14th when a debris caution slowed the field on lap 123. He restarted in 10th place after a two tire change. Gordon ran 8th on lap 135 after passing Paul Menard and Carl Edwards. At the halfway point, Gordon was in 7th place and closing on Kenseth for the 6th spot.

He moved around Kenseth to take 6th on lap 162 and re-entered the top-5 with a move around Kyle Busch two laps later. He passed Keselowski for 4th on lap 172 as he tried to pad his cushion to the Chase cutoff. A caution for Austin Dillon’s cut tire on lap 183 brought pit stops. Gordon lost 2 spots on pit road and restarted in 6th place. He passed Truex for 5th prior to a debris caution on lap 200. Gordon dropped to 8th on the restart before Josh Wise’s crash brought a caution on lap 206. On the restart, Kyle Busch got loose and collected Clint Bowyer and Cole Whitt to bring out a caution. Gordon restarted in 7th place on lap 220. He re-entered the top-5 after passing Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch. With 78 to go, Jimmie Johnson slammed the wall to bring out a caution. Gordon took 2 tires and restarted on the inside of the front row along side race leader Kevin Harvick. Jamie McMurray’s spin one lap after the restart brought out a caution. Gordon once again restarted inside of Harvick. He dropped more than 5 seconds behind Harvick, but held 2nd place until a debris caution with 25 laps to go.

Gordon stayed on the track and once again restarted inside of Harvick with 21 to go. Landon Cassill’s spin with 16 to go slowed the field with Gordon holding 2nd place. On the restart with 12 to go, Gordon held the 2nd spot where he finished the race.

Turning point
A late two-tire change propelled Gordon up to 2nd place.

JG’s comments
“It’s disappointing. We have a lot to hold our heads up high about the way we raced this race and the whole Chase and the whole season. We raced hard and we raced together as a team. But I hope we taught somebody that you can race clean and still go out there and give it your best, and that you don’t have to wreck people to make it in the Chase or win the championship. I’m afraid if it was that ugly these last couple of weeks, it’s going to get really ugly next week. But I couldn’t be more proud of this team. This makes last week hurt that much more. We did everything we could at Martinsville. We did everything we could here and 2nd just wasn’t good enough. Kevin Harvick was in another zip code. There was nobody who was going to get him today. We did a great job finishing 2nd. I’m not happy about it, but at the same time I’m really proud of what we’ve done this year. We’ll go try to win Homestead and end this season on a positive note.”

Charlotte In-Car Audio

October 13, 2014 by admin 6739Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2014%2F10%2F13%2Fjeff-gordon-charlotte-bank-of-america-500-in-car-audio-2014-nascar%2FCharlotte+In-Car+Audio2014-10-13+04%3A51%3A52adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D6739

Jeff Gordon took a step toward the third round of the Chase with a second place effort under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Gordon finished where he started the event behind pole sitter (and race winner) Kevin Harvick. Heading into Talladega, Gordon has an 18 point cushion on the Chase cutoff as the second round concludes in Alabama. Gordon started on the outside of the front row and ran in 2nd behind Kyle Busch for the first 13 laps. He took the race lead from Busch on lap 14 and pulled away until the competition caution on lap 25. He exited pit road after a four tire change in 4th place after two drivers opted for two tires. On the restart, Gordon made quick work of Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr and moved to 2nd behind Busch. He re-assumed the top spot by passing Busch on lap 38. Gordon kept the race lead over Kevin Harvick through a round of green flag pit stops on lap 75. The next caution came on lap 95 after Clint Bowyer’s engine expired. Gordon again opted for four tires and restarted in 3rd place. He took 2nd from Jamie McMurray on lap 111, but ran 3 seconds behind Harvick. A caution on lap 135 for Paul Menard’s engine brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon restarted in 2nd along side Harvick on lap 144, but fell to 4th on the inside line. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 190 while battling a tight handling issue.

Following stops, Gordon ran in 5th place behind Harvick, McMurray, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson. A caution for Josh Wise’s engine on lap 222 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. He restarted in 5th place, but struggled on the inside and dropped to 9th on lap 228. Brian Vickers’ spin on lap 237 brought the caution. Pit stops ensued with Gordon opting for 2 tires. He restarted in 7th place on lap 242. The next caution came on lap 245 when Joey Logano spun Danica Patrick in turn 4. Gordon again restarted 7th on the inside line. He ran 8th when the next caution waved on lap 266. After pit stops, Gordon restarted 9th on lap 270. He moved to 7th within a lap of the restart, and took 6th from Kyle Busch. He re-entered the top-5 on lap 284 by passing Brad Keselowski. Three laps later he took 4th from Jimmie Johnson. With 39 to go, he passed Kyle Larson to take over 3rd. Gordon then tracked down and passed Denny Hamlin for the runner-up spot with 31 to go.

Gordon’s final green flag stop came with 22 laps to go. He had to deal with traffic coming off the pit lane and dropped 6 seconds behind Harvick for the race lead. Brian Vickers’ engine brought out the caution with 7 laps to go. Gordon lined up next to Harvick for the restart with 3 to go. He was unable to make headway on the inside line and finished the event in 2nd place. It was his first top-3 finish at Charlotte since he claimed the victory in October 2007 — a span of 14 races.

Turning point
Gordon restarted in 9th place on lap 270. The car came to life on the short run, which put Gordon in position to challenge for the victory.

JG’s comments
“I’m really proud of that effort. Kevin got out there on us after that last green flag stop. I didn’t want to see another restart because every time we start on the inside we seemed to lose positions. We were just trying to tune to make it better. We got off a little bit and lost some track position. I had some terrible restarts. At the end, four tires and good adjustments, good restarts, and we were able to get right up in the thick of it. Kevin was tough. I knew when he got out front that he was going to be hard to beat him. This new format has created some serious drama. I’m happy about this 2nd place. It doesn’t make us by any means very comfortable going into next week, but it’s a lot better than it could have been.”

“We had a great start to the race and got up there and took the lead from Kyle. I was pretty happy with my car, but rubber was laying down and track conditions were changing. We were trying to make some adjustments to keep up with it. I thought we made a really good adjustment, were able to keep the lead, and then we kind of lost a little bit of track position. We started on the inside there and just lost some positions and kind of fought it from there, tried to make some adjustments to make it better and it made it a little bit worse. But we stuck with it and finally there at the end we got a little bit out of cycle, some guys on two tires versus four tires. We put four tires on and made a really good adjustment to the car and were able to drive up through there all the way back to second and kind of closing on Kevin but just couldn’t get close enough to him and then that green flag stop, it was kind of disastrous for us from the cars that were pitting and a bunch of other things that went on. We just didn’t have some of the things that we needed to go a little bit better go our way. But really, really strong finish there to come back second, so I’m really proud of that.”

In New Hampshire, you talked a little bit about the danger potentially of having to go into Talladega with all the craziness that can happen there with your fates at hand. I wanted you to elaborate on that, and I wondered how much or how little the potential to have a huge race in Talladega factored into the way you dealt with the race today?
“Yeah, I think everybody was pushing hard and now how much was on the line, not just this weekend but last weekend. A win in this particular round, if you want to call it, nobody wants to deal with Talladega. Everybody would like to take the weekend off there if they could. Two guys in some ways get to, and the rest of us are going to have to go race there. We’ve got a little bit of a cushion but not near enough to be comfortable by any means. We’ll go and race the way we normally do there, which is just try to be smart, try to stay out of the mess and then put ourselves in a good position to get a good finish, hope it works out. But yeah, the format is definitely creating a lot of drama, a lot of intensity, a lot of pressure, and each round seems to intensify that much more. Today’s performance by us was huge and crucial, I think, because we do at least have a much bigger buffer than some other guys do. There’s going to be some guys that really have to win at that race and that have to maybe get a top 5 or make up a lot of points. Certainly these last two weeks have shaken things up quite a bit. I like our chances. I think we’ve got an excellent race team, and I really hope we can make it through Talladega because I think the next round suits us very, very well.

The final caution, did that pump you up thinking, okay, I’ve got another shot at this victory, or was it more pressure, worried that you might lose second place to someone?
“I would have liked it if Kevin decided to give me a shot and start on the inside. That would have got me pumped up. But I lost positions every single restart on the inside. I think I started on the outside once and made positions up and every other one I was on the inside and lost positions. I was thankful to be in that position. I knew our car was really good right then and I just didn’t want to spin the tires, and I knew Jamie was really good on the outside there. He got by me on the outside on a previous restart. I was just hoping that that clean air I had on the nose that the car would stick on the bottom, and it stuck pretty good. I got a good start and was able to fall in behind Kevin. At that point I was just kind of settling for second because my car just wasn’t doing what I needed it to do to make any move on him.”

Is this Chase turning into some bizarre psychological experiment? Seems like people are kind of coming unbolted here as you get down to these rounds.
“I mean, there’s a lot on the line. It’s not an experiment. It’s just the new format, I think we all knew would make the emotions get out of whack by who’s in, who’s out, who’s on the bubble, how your races are going. When you have just these three-race segments and then they clean the slate and start all over, it creates a lot of drama, and I think they knew that going in, and that’s why they did it. It’s going to shake things up from here on out. It’s going to make this championship that much tougher to win. It’s going to make it tough to make it to Homestead, and especially because you’re not just racing the other guys in the Chase, you’re also racing everybody out there, and they’re all racing hard, wanting to win races, as well, wanting to get good finishes for many different reasons. Everybody is pushing extremely hard. You throw in a green-white-checkered restart, and there’s your drama, and there’s already a lot on the line and emotions running high, then you do that, and you have guys on four tires, guys on no tires, it’s going to make things crazy. It’s only going to intensify from here on out.”

I’m just curious what is your team’s mindset heading to Talladega. You’re still not locked into the Chase. Was it a sense of relief for tonight even though you didn’t get the victory?
“My first question when I got out of the car was how many points did we gain or where are we at, 17 up on ninth, I guess. That is not what I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear that we were 35 or 38 or something like that up on ninth. But we knew that that was going to be tough to do. We’re going to have to just go race Talladega, which isn’t a bad thing. I don’t like leaving things up to chance, which happens a lot of times at Talladega, but at the same time if it’s meant to be, we go race hard and do what we need to do to try to win that race, and if it’s meant to be for us to move on to the next round, we’ll find out. If our team is good enough, if our cars are good enough, which I think we are, we’ll go through to the next round.”

You’re a guy who doesn’t lose his temper very often. How mad would Matt Kenseth have to be to do that?
“Yeah, he must have been pretty mad. I think Matt is a pretty calm and collected guy. Over the years he and I have had our incidents but that was because I was mad. I don’t think he was mad at me. I can’t remember. I wrecked him one time and I don’t remember him being mad at me that much.”

He wrecked you more than once
“Yeah. And he’s never come and tried to put a headlock on me. We usually talk it out. Obviously there was some built-up animosity towards Brad. I’d better hold the rest of my thoughts back to myself.”

Brad Keselowski began the Chase for the Championship the same way he closed the regular season with a visit to Victory Lane. Keselowski took the lead of the Myafibstory 400 in the late going after Kevin Harvick and Kyle Larson battled for the lead. It was Keselowski’s 15th career win and it moved him into the next round of the Chase. Jeff Gordon posted a runner-up finish after leading in the mid-stages. Gordon started 8th and moved up to 6th by lap 2. He took 5th from Jimmie Johnson on lap 7, and advanced to 3rd by lap 15 with passes on Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards. Gordon took the runner-up spot from Matt Kenseth on lap 16 and set his sights on race leader Kyle Busch. He took the race lead from Busch on lap 28 and led until Jamie McMurray went by on lap 40. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 46. He fell to nearly 2 seconds behind McMurray prior to a debris caution on lap 68. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for 4 tires and restarting in 7th place. He re-entered the top-5 on lap 76 when McMurray brushed the wall. Gordon’s fresher tires paid dividends as he took the race lead from Kyle Busch on lap 88. The next debris caution came at lap 98 for Ryan Newman’s tire. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 3rd place after a four-tire change.

He took 2nd from McMurray on lap 108, but was unable to close in on race leader Brad Keselowski. Shortly before a round of green flag stops, Kevin Harvick took 2nd place from Gordon. Following green flag stops on lap 149, Gordon ran in 3rd place. A debris caution on lap 182 allowed Gordon to erase more than a 6 second gap to the leader. He restarted in 2nd place alongside Kevin Harvick. On lap 200, Kyle Larson went around Gordon on the outside line to take a spot. He came to pit road for a green flag stop with 38 laps to go. The caution waved with 35 laps to go for Carl Edwards’ cut tire. On the restart, Gordon lined up 3rd behind Larson and Harvick with Keselowski along side. Clint Bowyer’s wall contact with 23 to go slowed the field. The next restart came with 19 laps to go. Keselowski moved ahead of Gordon to take 3rd with 18 to go. Keselowski then took the race lead from Larson and Harvick. A caution for Ricky Stenhouse and Danica Patrick’s contact slowed the field with 9 to go.

On the restart, Gordon moved ahead of Harvick to take 3rd. With 3 to go he moved to the inside to take 2nd from Larson. Gordon posted a runner-up finish — his best start to the Chase since the 2007 season when he also posted a 2nd place finish in the opening race.

Turning point
Gordon ran in the top-4 for the balance of the day. A late race restart allowed him to pass Harvick and Larson for a runner-up finish.

JG’s comments “I was having a pretty good time watching Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick go at it in front of me. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought for sure there was going to be a wreck. But that’s just two guys that are wheeling it. I’m really proud of Kyle Larson. Man, what a great effort; such a young talent. I really wanted to see him win that race because I like him, but I didn’t want to see those other guys win it either. But we had a couple restarts and this car was really solid. The whole team effort was extremely solid. And that’s a great way to get started, especially with restarts like that to come out second. Brad Keselowski is really strong and Joey Logano is really strong in those short runs, and we had them beat I think, prior to that. Kevin (Harvick), well, maybe (Kyle) Larson, too, had us all beat prior to that. But still we were a top three or four all day long so to come in second, I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

Richmond In-Car Audio

September 7, 2014 by admin 6671Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F2014%2F09%2F07%2Fjeff-gordon-federated-auto-parts-400-richmond-in-car-audio-nascar-2014%2FRichmond+In-Car+Audio2014-09-07+23%3A25%3A23adminhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.scannerbytes.com%2F%3Fp%3D6671

Brad Keselowski dominated the Federated Auto Parts 400 leading 383 out of 400 laps en route to the victory. Jeff Gordon finished 2nd at Richmond for his third runner-up finish in the last 5 Richmond races.  Gordon started 2nd and ran behind race leader Brad Keselowski for the first 30 laps before Kevin Harvick passed for position. He came to pit road in 3rd for the competition caution on lap 50.  He dropped to 5th after the restart and settled into the spot for the next 40 laps. He took 4th from Jamie McMurray on lap 88 and ran in that spot at the 100-lap mark. A debris caution on lap 125 brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon gained two spots on pit road and restarted in 2nd place. At the halfway point, Gordon ran in 2nd place behind Keselowski by more than 3 seconds. He came to pit road for a four-tire change on lap 232. Following stops, Gordon ran 4th behind Keselowski, Harvick and Clint Bowyer. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 261 and brought pit stops. Gordon restarted in 4th place following the stops. He took 3rd from Harvick on lap 290.

With 83 to go, Gordon moved into the runner-up spot ahead of Bowyer. The caution waved on lap 329 when a spectator attempted to climb over the catchfence in turn 4.  The leaders came to pit road with Keselowski edging ahead of Gordon at pit exit. Keselowski pulled out to nearly a 2-second lead with 50 laps to go. As the laps wound down, Keselowski kept a consistent 2-second lead over Gordon and claimed the victory.

Turning point
The field was distantly behind Brad Keselowski for the balance of the night. Gordon struggled at times with the tires.

JG’s comments
“I’m very confident [for the Chase] because we’ve got such a great race team. I’m so proud of Alan and all of our engineers and everybody on this team. Tonight was another one of those efforts where I didn’t feel that we had a car that could compete with Brad at certain portions of the night. We just never gave up on it. We had great pit stops, great adjustments. There at the end we were closing on him. So, it wasn’t a win, but still great momentum to carry into the Chase. It’s been a heck of a year. Our fans — the way they’ve embraced this season has been extremely motivating. I know how proud they are. We’re proud of the effort and the results that we’re getting this year. 10 more weeks. We’ve got to get it done and this team is ready to do that.”

ON BUILDING CHEMISTRY
“Sometimes it takes time to build your chemistry. I’ve always enjoyed Alan as a person and as a crew chief. We’ve clicked from the beginning. But I don’t know if we ever had the chemistry or been in sync like we are right now. Communication is really solid. I believe 100 percent in him. He believes 100 percent in me. That’s trickling down through the whole team. That’s why we can go through a tough practice like we did yesterday, and rebound and come back and have a solid night. We can go through a blown left front tire like we had in Atlanta and fight back to get back on the lead lap. This is the team I want to go into battle with for the next 10 weeks. It’s because of how in sync and the chemistry we have. It’s a team that really believes in one another. You can’t ask for more than that.”
