Michigan In-Car Audio

For the second time in four weeks, Jeff Gordon scored an impressive victory in the NASCAR Cup series. Gordon pulled away from Joey Logano on the final restart with 17 laps to go en route to his 3rd victory of the season and 91st of his career. Gordon’s 447th top-10 finish moved him past Bobby Allison into sole possession of 3rd all-time in NASCAR history. Gordon started on the pole and opted for the outside line. Joey Logano took the race lead on the inside after exiting turn 2 on the opening lap. The first caution came on lap 4 after Kyle Busch made contact with the wall. Gordon ran 2nd to Logano until the competition caution on lap 20. Gordon came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted in 5th place on lap 24. The next caution came just after the restart when Danica Patrick spun in turn 2. The melee collected Matt Kenseth, Martin Truex, Justin Allagaier, Trevor Bayne, and Michael Annett. Gordon struggled on the restart on lap 30 and dropped to 7th place. He regrouped to take 6th from Jamie McMurray on lap 34 prior to a debris caution on lap 36. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 4th on lap 39. He quickly moved to 2nd on the outside line behind Logano. He tracked down Logano and took the race lead on lap 59 before coming to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 64.

Gordon lost a spot to Logano during the pit sequence as the crew removed a spring rubber. Gordon passed Logano for position as the pit sequence ended, thus giving Gordon the race lead once again. The next caution came on lap 96 for Kyle Larson’s hard crash in turn 3. Gordon came to pit road for 4 tires and restarted in 5th place. He slipped to 7th on the inside line before taking 6th from Greg Biffle on lap 110. Five laps later, he re-entered the top-5 with a move around McMurray. Gordon advanced to 3rd on lap 125 with a pass on Dale Earnhardt Jr, and took the runner-up spot from Kevin Harvick on lap 133. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 139. When the sequence cycled through, Gordon had the race lead. He extended his lead to 2 seconds before a green flag stop for two tires on lap 166. Logano cycled through with the race lead just ahead of Gordon after the round of stops.

A caution for Brad Keselowski’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 168. Gordon lined up alongside Logano for the restart with 28 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 3rd on the inside line after the restart. A caution for Brian Vickers’ spin with 26 laps to go brought another restart. He took 2nd when Kurt Busch slammed the wall with 23 laps to go, which brought out the caution. On the restart with 17 to go, Gordon shot into the lead heading into turn 1. He pulled away for his 3rd win of the season and 91st of his career.

Turning point
Gordon got a strong restart on the inside of Logano with 17 laps to go. He shot into the lead and never looked back.

JG’s comments
“It wasn’t easy. It’s never easy to win at any of these tracks, especially when aerodynamics and track position mean so much. I thought we learned a lot the last time we were here on track position. Alan just called a perfect race. I kept getting on that inside lane and just not getting very good restarts. I knew it was going to get exciting with Kurt (Busch) and Joey (Logano). Those two are very, very aggressive; and of course Kurt got loose. That last restart was it. We had the car to win. Our car was amazing. But whoever got out in front had such a huge advantage. I got a good restart and Kevin (Harvick) for some reason, wasn’t getting good restarts, so Joey was sort of out there by himself and I was able to get to his quarter. When I got to his quarter, I dragged him back and I was able to shoot to the bottom and get by. But he made a heck of an effort. I thought he was going to get back by me; he almost did. And I just needed a couple of laps for my tires to come in and all of a sudden we were out front and setting sail and the checkered flag was waving. This is just unbelievably awesome. I’ve got to say hi to Ingrid and Ella and Leo back home. They couldn’t come today. But we’re celebrating your honor here and this is just amazing. This is fantastic.”

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS CAR AND THE RULES PACKAGE THAT IS PLAYING INTO YOUR HANDS THIS YEAR?
“It’s everything. It’s Hendrick Motorsports and the job that they do, collectively, with all of our teammates and the engineers. Everybody who is building the chassis and the bodies and the cars back at the shop; the engines are amazing. And then, I’ve got to give so much credit to Alan Gustafson and his crew. This guy is a great leader. I knew that he had this in him and he’s just been showing it by bringing great race cars every weekend. Today it was more than just a great race car, it took the whole team effort and making great calls and of course, I had a good restart again. That was fun. And these guys; they’re just awesome. Rick Hendrick is here and I love celebrating wins with him.”

TALK ABOUT THAT LAST RESTART AND HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO GET BY JOEY LOGANO
“I had a couple of different ones that didn’t go so well today. On that inside lane it was tough. Joey was so aggressive and good on the restarts. His car could really take off. But Kevin (Harvick) behind him was having a little bit of trouble on the restarts so he kind of got out there on his own and I got a really good start and I just got to his quarter just before we got to turn one, his left-rear. I was able to drag him back a little bit and when that happened it just gave me the momentum and allowed me to get ahead of him. I just didn’t lift. Went to the bottom, didn’t lift. I was on the inside of him on a previous restart and I kind of learned what not to do on that one. I knew my car was good enough, but even when we got out front with this car, Joey had a good run at us. His car was just turning so good at the beginning of a run that he got back to my bumper got me loose and I thought it was over at that point. Luckily I was able to stay on the outside of him and had a little push from Kevin (Harvick) that time to get by him.”

TAKE US THROUGH THAT MOVE
“He could just attack the entry of the corner. Those Penske cars all year long have been able to drive in the corner so deep and get the car to turn for whatever reason we seem to be better than them on the long runs. I knew getting out front was going to be a huge advantage. I tried to hedge toward the bottom. I knew that was the way it was going. I just had to lift early to keep the front-end cutting. When I did he got to me and it started loosening up the back end. I tried to stay in the gas as much as I could and keep as much momentum because I knew he was going to get inside of me and I was just hoping I could stay with him and I was able to. When I was able to stay on his quarter panel and when Kevin got behind me it just gave me a big shove and push into turn three. Those guys got side-by-side and at that point I knew it was over if we just could get to the checkered flag.”

“As I told you before the race started our Chase has already started. This team is championship caliber, but we have a lot of work to do. It’s going to be tough and we want to put ourselves in the mindset of right now we are in it. We don’t want anything to change and do anything different when we get to Chicago. Other than keep going and charging for those wins. That is what we did today. I’m just so proud. Thanks to all the fans. We had an awesome Michigan crowd here today. To win here in Michigan in the backyard of Chevrolet driving this car is always special.”

Brickyard 400 In-car Audio

Jeff Gordon claimed his 5th career victory in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon led 40 laps and took the lead for the final time with 18 laps to go. He scored his 90th career victory and 2nd of the 2014 season. Gordon started 2nd and took the race lead from Kevin Harvick on lap 2. He pulled out to more than a 3-second lead prior to the competition caution on lap 20. He opted for two tires during the stop. Gordon restarted 2nd next to Joey Logano who did not pit. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 4th as his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson went by. He regrouped and took 3rd from Johnson on lap 32, and moved to 2nd when Logano came to pit road on lap 33. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 35 after complaining of loose handling. Different pit strategies were in play as Gordon passed Kasey Kahne and Joey Logano on the track following stops to run 15th on lap 45. When the field cycled through, Gordon ran 2nd to Harvick on lap 55. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 66 for four tires. The second caution waved on lap 67 for Danica Patrick’s axle problem. Gordon restarted in 4th place behind Denny Hamlin, Harvick, and Kahne. On the restart, he fell to 6th in the outside line as Logano went by entering turn 1. Gordon re-entered the top-5 on lap 74 with a move around Hamlin, and took 4th from Logano two laps later. He took 3rd from Harvick on lap 91 and worked to close a 4-second deficit to race leader Kasey Kahne.

The third caution waved on lap 97 for Trevor Bayne’s crash. The lead lap cars came to pit road with Gordon restarted in 5th place. Harvick, with the preferred first pit stall, was able to re-take the spot from Gordon. On the restart, Gordon was boxed in behind Clint Bowyer and settled into 5th place on lap 102. He passed Harvick to take 4th on lap 106 and took 3rd from Bowyer two laps later. Kyle Busch moved over to let Gordon take 2nd place on lap 114 to get a piece of debris off the front of his car. Gordon came to pit road for the final time with 31 laps to go. He cycled through in 2nd place behind Kahne. A caution with 21 laps to go slowed the field. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 2nd alongside Kahne.

On the restart with 18 to go, Gordon dove to the inside to take the race lead from Kahne. He pulled away and scored his record-tying 5th victory at the famed 2.5-mile track in the Indianapolis suburbs.

Turning point
Gordon got a strong restart on the outside of Kahne with 18 laps to go to take the lead that he never relinquished.

JG’s comments
“I don’t think there is a greater feeling for a race car driver and a race team, because that’s what it took today. It was a total team effort to be here in Victory Lane.”

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND ON THAT LAST RESTART WITH 17 LAPS TO GO?
“I’m not very good on restarts and wasn’t very good today. I finally made the restart of my life today when it counted most. I knew we had a great race car. We just needed to get out front. Kasey (Kahne) kind of hung back and I kind of got a little ahead of him and I had to back up and was able to stay on his quarter panel and once we got down into (Turns) 1 and 2, I could hear him get loose. I was kind of glad he took the inside because I really wanted the outside. I’ve got to thank him. He raced me awesome and clean because it could have gotten real ugly down there. Once I got clear of him I was like, I can’t believe this is happening now. No caution; please no caution now. I cannot believe that this just happened.”

YOU UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY OF THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY. WHAT’S THE SIGNIFICANCE TO YOU TO BE A FIVE-TIME WINNER HERE?
“I was trying so hard with 10 (laps) to go not to focus on the crowd. Every once in a while I’d glance up there and I could see the reaction. I was trying not to let it get to me and not think about it too much. And yet you can’t help it. It’s such a big place and such an important victory and a crucial moment in the season and the championship and those emotions take over. I have my kids here; there’s nothing better, especially at one of the biggest races to have your family here. All I know is my friends back at home; I need to take a vacation more often (laughs). This one is for all those fans throughout the years and all weekend long. They’re saying ‘we believe you can get number 5.’ We got number 5.”

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF
“It’s just unbelievable. I’ve wanted to win this race my whole life; to win here at this unbelievable place and the history of this race track. Jeff (Gordon) has an amazing record here. This is the one. This is the one for me. I am so proud of everybody at the No. 24 shop. Kasey (Kahne) had a great run. This is a new car. There is just a ton of work to it. Those guys did it; they are the best.”

“I told Jeff this morning that this was his day. He’s been so good on the long runs at every track and he gets around this place so well. But for him to break that tie [with 5 Indy wins] is pretty special. We’re a little bit older than we were 20 years ago, but this is a great win. What a way, with Jeff, here in Indianapolis where this is his own track. I remember how good it felt. This one feels just as good.”

Richmond In-Car Audio

Jeff Gordon led 173 laps and finished 2nd in the Toyota 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Gordon had the dominant car on longer runs, but a series of late race restarts hindered his efforts. He dropped to 4th in the closing stages before moving up to 2nd behind race winner Joey Logano following contact on the track in a battle between Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth. It was Gordon’s 7th top-10 finish in 9 races this year. He remains the NASCAR points leader.

Gordon started 25th and moved into the top-20 by lap 10. He ran 13th at the competition caution on lap 40. He gained four spots on pit road and restarted 9th on lap 44. He took 7th from Jimmie Johnson on lap 55 and advanced to 6th with a move around Joey Logano by lap 60. Gordon passed Dale Earnhardt Jr and Clint Bowyer to run 4th on lap 65. He took 3rd from Kasey Kahne on lap 68 and moved into the runner-up position around Kevin Harvick on lap 91. A debris caution on lap 99 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon gained a spot in the pits and restarted with the race lead on lap 104. A debris caution slowed the field on lap 161. Gordon held the lead through the pit stops. However, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano went by on lap 174 to send Gordon to 3rd place. He regrouped and took 2nd from Logano on lap 188, and re-assumed the race lead on lap 210.

A caution for debris on lap 226 brought pit stops. Gordon again held the lead through the round of stops. Logano took the lead from Gordon on lap 244 as the #24 again struggled early in the green flag run. Gordon passed Logano for the lead on lap 252 and set things on cruise control until a caution on lap 296 for Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact. Dale Earnhardt Jr beat Gordon off pit road to claim the race lead. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 4th on the outside line before the tire pressures came up. With 80 laps to go, Gordon took the 3rd spot from Earnhardt Jr. He passed Keselowski for 2nd with 68 to go and re-assumed the lead from Logano with 65 to go. With 39 to go, Matt Kenseth ran down Gordon and took the lead. A caution for Jimmie Johnson’s cut tire with 33 to go brought the final pit stops of the night. Gordon left pit road in 3rd place as he slowed near the exit of the pits to allow Earnhardt Jr to depart in 2nd, which gave Gordon the inside line behind Kenseth for the restart with 25 laps to go.

On the restart, Logano got past Gordon prior to a caution for Denny Hamlin’s spin with 23 to go. Gordon started on the outside of the second row with 18 laps to go. He moved to 3rd when Logano spun his tires. A caution for JJ Yeley’s engine slowed the field with 15 to go. On the restart, Gordon moved to the runner-up spot behind Kenseth. With 6 to go, Keselowski moved along side Gordon on the outside line. Gordon held the line but lost a spot to Logano. After Keselowski tapped Kenseth, Logano moved to the lead with Gordon in 2nd place.

Turning point
A four-way battle in the late stages between Gordon, Keselowski, Logano, and Kenseth was altered when Keselowski and Kenseth made contact, allowing Logano to open a healthy lead en route to the victory.

JG’s comments
“The restarts are something we’re really adamant about this year, because it was definitely hurting us last year. Tonight we really didn’t have a good short run car. We had a really good long run car. About 40-50 laps [into a run], it was the best car out there. I had a blast tonight. Great short track racing at Richmond. To have a race car like that to drive from 25th up to the front was so much fun. Joey was in the right place there. He had a good short run car. We were battling it out. Matt was making his car really super-wide, which you have to do to try and win. It just didn’t come down the way that we needed. We needed a little bit longer run. We’re showing up at the race track with cars capable of winning. It’s just a matter of time before we do win.”

ON MATT KENSETH
“He was making his car real wide. I ultimately thought that might have cost him not just the win, but more positions. But as good as the 2 car was at the end, the 2 was probably going to win. The 2 was so much better than him. Had he just run his line around the bottom, then the 2 was going to get the outside and go right on by. All night long I had to let the 2 and the 22 go by me because they were so fast for 10 laps and then I’d reel them back in. You can’t do that at the end when you’re leading the race. So, I think Matt did what he felt like he needed to do. He made his car really wide and probably didn’t make the guys behind him very happy.”

ON THE TIRES
“I’m not a fan of the dual tread zone. We had it at Texas and the cars just slid the front getting in the corner. That was the same case here. It just has no grip in the front getting in the corner. But I also think we’re doing a great job with this tire and making our car go fast. So, while I don’t like the way it drives, I also think we’re very competitive with it. I’m not going to say a whole lot. I will just second what Kyle Busch said. I think the idea behind this is to make it more durable. And that does not seem to be the case. So there needs to be more research that goes into it to try to perfect it.”

ON THE POINTS LEAD
“We’re running really good and I’m excited about that. Anytime you’re running this good consistently week in and week out on all different types of race tracks, it gives you confidence as a driver and a team. But you also know this year more than ever, you have to close that out. If you’re going to lead that many laps and have that good of a car, you have to close it out. You have to get the win. This confidence will build if we keep running like this. But eventually it can also fall off if we don’t put a win or two together.”

Texas In-Car Audio

A two-tire gamble for Jeff Gordon nearly worked to perfection at Texas Motor Speedway. Joey Logano edged Gordon for the victory in the Duck Commander 500 after opting for four tires on the final pit stop with 2 laps to go. Gordon had emerged from pit road with the lead, but was passed for the top spot coming to the white flag. Nevertheless, the second place effort gave Gordon the NASCAR points lead for the first time since May 2009.

Gordon started 12th as the field ran the first 10 laps under yellow while crews completed track drying. The green flag waved on lap 11 and the second caution came one lap later when Dale Earnhardt Jr crashed in turn 1 after misjudging the infield grass. Jimmie Johnson, who was running directly behind Earnhardt Jr, sustained damage to the front of his car from the mud on the infield grass. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 28 and took 7th from Kurt Busch on lap 36. He moved into the top-5 by passing Trevor Bayne on lap 42. The competition caution waved on lap 49 and brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon exited pit road in 4th place.

Gordon took 3rd from Greg Biffle on lap 63 and took the runner-up spot from Tony Stewart on lap 88. He took the race lead during a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 98. Gordon dropped to 3rd following the stops. He returned to 2nd place on lap 128 with a move around Brad Keselowski. Gordon again took the race lead during a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 142. He came to pit road one lap later and cycled through in 2nd place behind Kyle Busch after Denny Hamlin received a pit road speeding penalty. Gordon tracked down Busch and took the lead on lap 153.

A debris caution on lap 176 slowed the field and brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon held the lead through the pit stop sequence. Keselowski took the lead from Gordon after the restart. As the run progressed, Joey Logano passede Gordon on lap 214 to send him to 3rd. A caution for Kurt Busch’s cut tire slowed the field on lap 219. Pit stops ensued with Gordon restarted 4th on lap 224. He held the outside line and moved to 3rd behind Logano and Keselowski. A debris caution on lap 254 brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon gained a spot and restarted 2nd on lap 259. Keselowski went by on lap 265 to send Gordon to 3rd. He fell to 4th when Kyle Larson passed on lap 296. Gordon came to pit road for the final time under green with 35 to go. Following the stops he ran in 6th place.

He took 5th from Kyle Larson with 25 to go, but gave the spot back with 9 to go. With 2 laps to go, NASCAR waved the caution flag after Kurt Busch cut a tire on the apron. Gordon came to pit road and opted for two tires. He emerged with the race lead for the green/white/checkered finish. However, Joey Logano had four fresh tires and got a run on the #24 car heading into turn 3. He drag raced Gordon to the start/finish line and took the lead as the white flag waved. Gordon held 2nd for the final lap and posted his best finish since winning at Martinsville in October 2013.

Turning point
Gordon was running 6th in the closing stages when a caution for Kurt Busch’s cut tire allowed crew chief Alan Gustafson to gamble on tires. It nearly worked to perfection.

 JG’s comments
“We were really strong the first half of the race. When the sun came out, some guys came to the front and we just lost the handling and got real tight. So, it was a great call by Alan Gustafson. Everybody on this #24 team did an awesome job in the pits. I so badly wanted to get this Texas A&M Engineering maroon — and those Aggies — a win here in Texas. I have to thank Axalta Coating Systems for making this possible. They’re a great company. One of the biggest coating companies in the world, and all of our sponsors. That was an awesome race all day so I have to thank the fans for coming out and watching that one. It was a great battle. At one point, I thought we didn’t have a shot at all. We got a pretty good restart. Joey was right on me and I was pretty loose through turns 1 and 2. I wish I would have gone a little bit higher down in turns 3 and 4. He got a run off of turn 4. He got in the back of me and I thought I was going to wreck. So, at that point I was like, ‘Second would be good.’

Jeff Gordon posted a 5th place finish in the CNBC 500k at Phoenix Raceway. Gordon charged from 14th up to the top-5 in the final 30 laps after he was caught off the lead lap by an ill-timed caution flag.

 Gordon started 17th and moved up to 11th by lap 8. He entered the top-10 on lap 15 and took 8th from Greg Biffle on lap 23. He ran 6th when the competition caution waved on lap 35. Gordon gained a spot on pit road and restarted in 5th on lap 39. He dropped a spot on the restart and ran 6th on lap 45. Gordon re-entered the top-5 with a move around Kyle Busch on lap 46. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran in 5th. He held the spot through a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 113. Jimmie Johnson passed to send Gordon back to 6th on lap 120.

A debris caution slowed the field on lap 163. Gordon came to pit road for adjustments and restarted 8th on lap 168. Just after the restart, another caution waved for a melee in turn one involving Danica Patrick, Justin Allgaier, and Travis Kvapil. After dropping to 9th, the next caution came on lap 186 for Patrick’s spin. Gordon moved to 8th with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 192. He moved to 7th with 90 to go and led 4 laps during a green flag pit stop cycle with 73 to go. A debris caution on lap 246 had Gordon a lap down. He stayed on the track and opted for the wave-around to get back on the lead lap. Gordon restarted 13th with 61 laps to go. The sixth caution waved on lap 278 for debris. Gordon came to pit road for a two tire change and chassis adjustments. He restarted in 12th place with 30 to go.

Gordon moved up to 10th within 3 laps of the restart before the caution waved for David Gilliland’s spin. On the restart with 22 to go, Gordon immediately moved to 8th. He took 7th from Kyle Busch with 18 to go prior to a caution for Kurt Busch’s blown engine. The restart came with 9 laps to go. Gordon dove low on the backstretch to take 5th from Jimmie Johnson with 7 to go.

*First time JG has started the NASCAR season with consecutive top-5 finishes since 1997.

Turning point
Gordon came to pit road under caution with 30 laps to go for fresh tires. As a result, he had fresher tires than the drivers ahead of him and was able to make headway in the final laps.

JG’s comments
“You know when Ryan Newman is in front of you on a restart it’s going to get interesting. I didn’t know if it was going to get interesting because me and him were side-by-side or because he got side-by-side with somebody else. We were able to capitalize on it. Our Pepsi Max Chevrolet started the race really strong and we just didn’t like four tires. We needed two tires and we came in and got two on that last pit stop and unfortunately got caught under the caution under green a lap down. Great fight by this team. What a week it has been for this team from that top-five in Daytona, the Pepsi Max Test Drive II and then here we are with another top-five here at Phoenix. Great way to start the season.”

Daytona 500 In-Car Audio

Dale Earnhardt Jr captured his second Daytona 500 victory and snapped a 55-race winless streak on a long day at Daytona International Speedway. The season-opening race was delayed more than 6 hours by rain, with the finish coming just before midnight eastern time. Jeff Gordon helped propel Earnhardt Jr to a commanding lead on the final restart and finished in 4th place — his best Daytona 500 finish since winning in 2005.

Gordon started 6th and got a push from Kurt Busch to move to 2nd on lap 2. One lap later he went to the inside line and slipped back to 9th place as the field ran in single file. The first caution waved on lap 23 for Kyle Larson’s spin in turn 2. Gordon’s crew changed two tires and he restarted in 6th on lap 28. He stayed in the high line and moved up to 3rd behind Paul Menard and Denny Hamlin. However, the inside line began moving and dropped Gordon back to 7th. The next caution waved on lap 33 for Martin Truex’s engine. Rain began falling during the caution period which resulted in a red flag condition for more than 6 hours.

The race resumed under a dark sky just before 9pm. Gordon held the inside line and moved to 5th by lap 55, but eventually was caught in the middle line and faded back to 12th on lap 61. He hooked up in a draft with Kasey Kahne and moved back up to 7th on lap 70. One lap later he came to pit road for a 4-tire change. Gordon ran 17th at the halfway point of the event. He came to pit road on lap 119 for two tires. Following the stops, Gordon ran in 13th place. On lap 144, Gordon barely avoided a wreck when Aric Almirola spun across the track coming off turn 4. Gordon was just ahead of Almirola’s spinning car. On the restart, Gordon moved up to 11th in a draft behind Joey Logano. With 40 laps to go, Gordon moved to 7th on the inside line behind Matt Kenseth. A multi-car wreck with 38 laps to go was trigged when Austin Dillon hit Kyle Larson in turn 4. Marcos Ambrose and Kasey Kahne were collected in the melee.

Gordon restarted in 6th with 32 laps to go. He worked into the draft behind Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr to run 5th with 29 to go. He moved to the middle and ran behind Greg Biffle in 7th place with 22 to go. He followed Biffle to the low line and ran 6th with 20 to go. One lap later, Denny Hamlin dove low and put Gordon in the middle, which pulled him back to 7th place on the high line. A caution for Trevor Bayne’s crash on the backstretch slowed the field with 16 laps to go. With 12 to go, Gordon ducked to the bottom line to move into a line behind Johnson and Earnhardt Jr. With 9 to go, Gordon was pushed to 2nd by Brad Keselowski. With 7 to go, Gordon moved to the high line and dropped to 3rd behind Keselowski. A wreck with 6 laps to go was started when Dillon hit Ryan Newman in turn 3, which collected four drivers.

Gordon restarted 3rd behind Earnhardt Jr with 2 laps to go. He gave him teammate a needed push on the restart before settling in behind him. He finished in 4th place — his best Daytona 500 finish since winning in 2005.

Turning point
Gordon ran in 7th place with less than 20 laps to go, but worked his way forward into a drafting line with his Hendrick Motorsports teammates in the closing stages.

JG’s comments
“I’m so excited for Hendrick Motorsports right now. Congratulations to Dale, that’s so cool. I know how excited his fans are. Rick Hendrick, another Daytona 500 victory. Three Hendrick cars in the top-5 was spectacular. I don’t know what happened when the rain went away and the track dried. Everybody’s brain just flipped over to, ‘this is a shootout.’ It was unbelievable the kind of racing with two- and three-wide, bump drafting. Just craziness. For awhile we didn’t have great track position, I was just hanging on trying not to wreck and seeing other guys do the same thing. We got through some wrecks and then we really started having things go our way with some good pushes and picking the good lines.”

ON THE LAST LAP
“I gave Dale Jr a great push when we took the green so we got a good start. The 99 (Carl Edwards) got to my bumper and we started going. Then he got kind of sucked off of me so I was just a sitting duck along for the ride from that point. I saw Jimmie Johnson going three-wide behind me. My lane started going backwards. But when he got to me, he gave me a huge shove. The 11 (Denny Hamlin) pulled down in front of me and our lane just went. At that point, I was like, ‘maybe we can get to Junior.’ But at the same time I thought anything in the top-3 without a wrecked car would be a great finish. We wanted to win bad and we had a car that could, but we’re also excited to see Junior win it.”

Martinsville In-Car Audio

 Jeff Gordon broke a long drought at Martinsville Speedway Sunday afternoon, winning the Goody’s 500 for his eighth Martinsville victory, but his first since winning this race in the fall of 2005. It was his first win of the season and the 88th of his NASCAR Cup series career. “This is a special win for many reasons,” Gordon said. “It’s Martinsville. That grandfather clock (winner’s trophy) is special. It’s a historical track. It’s been good to me. There’s a lot of meaning to winning at this track.” Gordon moved up to 3rd in the NASCAR standings and trails Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson by 27 points with 3 races remaining in the season.

It wasn’t a long-awaited win for Jeff Gordon in the Hollywood Casino 400, but a solid 3rd place finish moved him to 4th in the NASCAR standings, just 32 points from the lead. Gordon’s 429th career top-10 moved him past Dale Earnhardt for the 4th highest total in NASCAR history.

Gordon started 14th and ran well ahead of a lap 1 crash involving Danica Patrick. He advanced to 12th by lap 35 and ran 11th when the caution waved on lap 42 for Michael McDowell slowing on the track. Gordon opted for two tires on the pit stop and restarted in 4th place. He used the outside line to take 3rd, but returned to 4th when Jimmie Johnson passed on lap 69. Gordon came to pit road for a stop on lap 85, just prior to a debris caution on lap 87. Although the caution trapped him a lap down, he stayed out for the wave around to get back on the lead lap. He restarted in 28th place on lap 92. Gordon steadily gained spots and ran 21st at the 100-lap mark. Gordon had advanced to 18th before the caution waved on lap 118 for Landon Cassill’s engine. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires and restarting in 14th place. He ran 12th at the halfway mark just prior to a caution for a wreck involving Ryan Newman and Justin Allgaier.

Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for two tires. He restarted 11th on lap 144 and moved into the top-10 prior to the next caution for Travis Kvapil’s spin on lap 146. Gordon moved around Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 152 to take 7th place. However, he battled a tight handling condition and dropped to 11th by lap 165. A caution for David Gilliland’s wreck with 97 to go brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. He changed four tires and restarted in 19th place. Gordon gained 4 spots after the restart to run 15th, prior to a caution for Casey Mears’ wall contact on lap 180. Kyle Busch’s spin brought out another caution with Gordon moving up to 13th place. The next caution waved with 68 laps to go when Carl Edwards made contact with Busch, which sent him into the wall and destroyed the front of the M&M’s Toyota. Gordon came to pit road for four tires and restarted in 28th place. He came to top off the fuel with 61 laps to go.

Gordon worked through race traffic and ran 18th with 50 laps to go. He moved up to 11th place prior to a debris caution with 40 to go. Gordon came to pit road for two tires and restarted in 3rd place because he didn’t have to wait on fuel as the other drivers did. On the restart, Gordon moved around Jeff Burton to take the runner-up spot. He ran more than a second behind race leader Kevin Harvick before a caution for Brian Vickers’ crash slowed the field with 25 laps to go. He restarted on the inside of Harvick with 19 to go. Kurt Busch moved to the outside to pass Gordon in turn 1. Gordon settled into 3rd place behind Busch where he finished the race.

Turning point
Topping off the fuel with 61 laps to go allowed Gordon to spend less time on pit road when he came in for the final with 40 laps to go.

JG’s comments
“It was a great day for our team. Ever since the Chase started, they’ve been bringing me awesome race cars. We’re having a lot of fun out there. Everything could have gone wrong for us today, and there at the end it actually went right. So, that’s nice to have.”

ON POST-RACE DISCUSSION WITH KURT BUSCH

“It’s not a NASCAR race if you don’t have a discussion with another driver about an incident on the track. These restarts are so tough. Everybody’s trying to get every position they can. I got in the outside lane one time and (Kurt) just came up. The next lap I got to his bumper and got him loose. That led to him wanting to run into me on the right side on my door. These cars are so sensitive aerodynamic-wise. You just can’t have any little damage like that. It did seem to affect our car. I just wanted to have a good civil conversation with Kurt, and we did. We’re really proud to finish 3rd today.”

Jimmie Johnson dominated the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway leading more than half of the event en route to his 8th career win on the 1-mile track. Jeff Gordon posted a 4th place finish and moved into a tie for 4th in the series standings.

Gordon started 16th and moved up to 12th place by lap 25. He advanced to 11th prior to the first caution on lap 37 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 12th place on lap 41. He moved into the top-10 by lap 60 and ran 9th on lap 70. At the 100-lap mark, Gordon ran in 7th place as the #24 car seemed at its best on longer runs. He led two laps prior to green flag pit stops on lap 125 — the fifth consecutive race Gordon has led. Following stops he ran in 8th place, but was unable to make headway over the next 40 laps. A debris caution on lap 164 brought the lead lap cars to pit road. Gordon restarted in 7th place on lap 170. After slipping to 9th on the restart, Gordon rallied back to run 7th at the halfway point.

Gordon took 6th from Ryan Newman on lap 224 as the car improved on the long run. A caution on lap 227 for Brad Keselowski’s engine brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon held 6th place through the cycle of pit stops. He used the outside line to his advantage and took 5th shortly after the restart. Gordon took 4th from Kyle Busch on lap 264 and moved to 3rd with a pass on Matt Kenseth on lap 266. He gained ground on his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr prior to a green flag pit stop cycle on lap 313. A debris caution with 31 laps to go altered late race strategy and brought the leaders to pit road for the final time. Crew chief Alan Gustafson called for two-tire change and Gordon restarted in 2nd place.

Johnson, as the race leader, opted for the outside line for the restart with 27 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 4th on the restart behind Johnson, Earnhardt Jr, and Joey Logano. He wound up the event in 4th place — his 5th top-10 in the last 6 races. Gordon moved up to a tie for 4th in the series standings, 39 points from the top spot.

Turning point
Gordon restarted 2nd with 27 to go, but struggled on short runs throughout the day. Without the last caution, it was possible that Gordon could have stretched his fuel to the finish and captured a victory

It seemed as if Jeff Gordon’s 88th career victory was on the horizon at Pocono Raceway. Gordon led Kasey Kahne on the final restart, but gave his Hendrick Motorsports teammate the opportunity to use the outside line to power past. Gordon finished second, which tied his best finish of 2013. In addition, he moved up to 9th in the series points standings. “I’ve given away a lot more races than I’ve won,” Gordon said. “I’m happy we were in position. I’m bummed it didn’t work out.”

Gordon started 22nd and took a wide line into turn 1. Juan Pablo Montoya clipped Ricky Stenhouse and sent the #17 car spinning. Gordon was just ahead of the melee and moved up to 19th place. He advanced to 16th by lap 10 and ran 13th when the second caution waved on lap 15 for Denny Hamlin’s wall contact. Gordon restarted 15th following pit stops. He dropped back on the restart and ran 17th on lap 20. As the run progressed, he moved through traffic and ran 12th on lap 26. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 32 with a pass on Tony Stewart. Due to alternating pit stop strategies, Gordon moved up to 3rd place on lap 38. He assumed the race lead on lap 42 when Kurt Busch came to pit road. Gordon came to pit road one lap later for fuel and tires. Following the stop, Gordon ran in 8th place. He quickly moved to 6th with passes on Paul Menard and Joey Logano on lap 49. A caution on lap 54 for David Gilliland’s wall contact brought some of the leaders to pit road. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 3rd place. He held the spot until a green flag pit stop on lap 72.

The complexion of the event changed on lap 77 when race leader Jimmie Johnson cut a tire and damaged the right side of the #48 car. Gordon stayed out and restarted 3rd on lap 82. He ran behind Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski for 15 laps before a caution for David Stremme’s cut tire. The #24 car came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted in 7th place. He slipped to 9th just after the restart on the inside line, but rallied back to 8th prior to a caution for Aric Almoriola’s spin on lap 102. Gordon dove low on the restart to move up to 5th with 53 laps to go. A multi-car wreck involving Danica Patrick, Jeff Burton, and Paul Menard brought out the caution with 50 to go. He passed Kyle Busch for 4th with 39 laps to go. Gordon came in for his final green flag pit stop with 30 to go.

Gordon held the 3rd spot through the cycle of pit stops behind his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He passed Earnhardt Jr with 22 laps to go, but ran 6 seconds behind Kahne for the race lead. Gordon was aided by a debris caution with 12 laps to go, which allowed him to restart next to Kahne. Gordon was on the inside line as Kahne opted for the outside lane. Gordon took the race lead from Kahne with a pass in turn 3 with 8 laps to go. Matt Kenseth’s spin brought out a caution with 4 laps to go and set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon chose the inside lane for the restart.

On the restart, Kahne powered past Gordon in the tunnel turn to take the race lead. Nevertheless, Gordon posted a 2nd place effort — tying his best finish of the 2013 season.

Turning point
Gordon ran distantly behind Kahne in the closing stages. However, a caution flag for debris on the track with 12 laps to go bunched the field and gave him a chance at the victory. He took the race lead, but the final caution for Matt Kenseth’s spin set up a restart. Gordon moved to protect the inside line, which allowed Kahne to power past on the outside.

JG’s comments
“Isn’t it funny how our emotions go up and down in this sport? Going into the race if you told me that I could finish second, I’d say that was a great birthday gift. But when you take the lead from Kasey the way we did on that restart, I thought we had him. He was better than us, but I thought we could hold him off. I got a perfect restart on that last one. I probably jumped him a little bit. I moved out front of him and it looked like I needed to block the inside. So I kind of protected the inside and he blasted up there on the outside. Flat outdrove me thru Turn 1. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get this win. This team has worked so hard to put ourselves in position. A little disappointed, but also excited because it was a good points day for us and we needed that.”
