Jeff Gordon posted a hard fought 6th place finish in the day/night Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Gordon led 22 laps and seemed destined for a solid top-5 finish to start the Chase. However, a flat tire on lap 173 brought Gordon to pit road under the green flag. He lost a lap and his chances for a Chase-opening victory were dashed. He was able to get back on the lead lap with less than 40 laps to go and salvaged a 6th place finish. Gordon moved up to 7th in the series standings, trailing points leader Matt Kenseth by 24.

After rain showers delayed the start by more than an hour, Gordon started 6th and dropped to 8th within a lap of the green flag. He held the spot until taking 7th from Kasey Kahne just before the competition caution on lap 30. He restarted in 11th place after opting for 4 tires. Gordon re-entered the top-10 on lap 39 with a pass on Greg Biffle, and took 9th from Martin Truex on lap 49. As the run progressed he took 8th from Ricky Stenhouse and moved around Aric Almirola to run 7th on lap 57. Gordon moved around Dale Earnhardt Jr for 6th on lap 60. He led 2 laps during a green flag pit stop sequence and cycled through in 6th place. Just 25 laps before the halfway point, rain arrived and brought out the caution flag. After more than 5 hours of rain and track drying, NASCAR restarted the event at 9pm/central time.

Pit stops came prior to the green flag and Gordon restarted in 11th place. He advanced to 10th before a debris caution on lap 122. Gordon used the outside line on the restart to move up to 7th by lap 130. He took 6th from Kasey Kahne on lap 134 and entered the top-5 by moving around Brian Vickers on lap 139. Two laps later he took 4th from Aric Almirola. The next caution waved on lap 147 for Justin Allgaier’s spin. Gordon changed two tires and emerged from pit road with the lead. He led the race until lap 167 when a debris caution brought the leaders to pit road. Kyle Busch beat Gordon off pit road after both opted for fuel-only stops. Gordon restarted 3rd after Biffle stayed out to assume the lead.

On the restart, Gordon slowed dramatically and came to pit road with a flat left rear tire. Two laps later the caution waved for Joey Logano’s engine. Gordon came to pit road for 4 tires and restarted in 33rd place, one lap down. He quickly got himself into the free pass position. However, race leader Kyle Busch began lapping the tail end of the lead lap, which made it more difficult for Gordon to get back on the lead lap. With 50 laps to go, the lead lap cars began coming to pit road for green flag stops. Gordon was able to stretch his fuel longer because of the pit stop earlier for the flat tire. With 43 laps to go, Gordon re-assumed the race lead because of the pit sequence. Gordon received a tremendous break when Dale Earnhardt Jr’s engine blew to bring out the caution flag.

Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 18th place. He moved to 15th with 34 laps to go, and took 12th from Denny Hamlin one lap later. He re-entered the top-10 with a pass on Clint Bowyer with 29 to go. Allgaier’s second spin of the night brought out the caution with 28 to go. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 7th place. He took 6th place from Ricky Stenhouse with 18 to go and challenged Jimmie Johnson for 5th place before settling for 6th place at the finish.

Turning point
After a flat tire took him off the lead lap, Gordon was stretching his fuel hoping for a caution with less than 45 laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr’s engine brought out the caution that Gordon needed for a shot at a solid finish.

JG’s comments
“That was an incredible accomplishment. It just shows how much fight this team has in them. They never give up. What an awesome [car] we had tonight. That was so much fun. To think how far down we were with 40 laps to go. We were like 18th on one of those last restarts. To be able to come up through there, get 6th, and have a shot at a top-5 is a lot of fun. That’s what we needed to get this thing started off right. I’m proud of this team and can’t wait to get to the next race.”

Two points. That’s what separated Jeff Gordon from the NASCAR Chase after 26 races this season. Gordon finished 8th at Richmond International Raceway and missed the Chase cutoff for just the 2nd time in the 10-year history of the Chase. Gordon was in position to make the Chase in the closing stages. However, a spin by Clint Bowyer (ironically) changed the complexion of the event.

Gordon started on the pole and led the first 49 laps before Brad Keselowski took the lead away. Kurt Busch followed Keselowski past Gordon, which dropped him to 3rd place on lap 51. He fell to 5th on lap 61 when Jamie McMurray and Clint Bowyer went by. He faded to 8th place by lap 75 after wearing out the right rear tire. Gordon fell out of the top-10 on lap 86 when Kasey Kahne moved ahead. Gordon came to pit road on lap 94 for a green flag stop. He cycled through in 12th place and ran there at lap 100. Gordon moved to 11th by passing Kasey Kahne on lap 123. The first caution waved on lap 135 which brought the field to pit road for adjustments. Gordon gained 3 spots on pit road because of the first pit stall and restarted in 8th place.

Gordon held 8th until lap 177 when Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola went by to send him back to 10th. As the handling went away, Gordon fell to 15th on lap 186. A caution for David Stremme’s spin on lap 208 brought out the caution. Gordon restarted in 16th place after adjustments on pit road. On lap 224, Gordon dropped off the pace and came to pit road after reporting a vibration — which turned out to be a loose right front wheel. The crew changed four tires and Gordon returned to the track two laps down in 25th position. He tracked down and passed Brad Keselowski to put himself one lap down on lap 231. On fresher tires he was able to gain spots on the drivers one lap down and ran 23rd on lap 255. Seven laps later, Gordon passed Brian Vickers to move into 22nd place — the free pass position if a caution waved. A debris caution on lap 264 allowed Gordon to get back on the lead lap to put himself in position to qualify for the Chase.

Gordon restarted 22nd on lap 274 and entered the top-20 soonafter. He took 19th place from Denny Hamlin on lap 292 and moved to 18th around Almirola 10 laps later. Gordon moved to 16th with 87 laps to go. With Joey Logano trapped 2 laps down, Gordon essentially needed a top-10 finish to qualify for the Chase at that stage of the event. He took 15th from Matt Kenseth with 75 laps to go, and took 14th from Martin Truex two laps later. Gordon came to pit road with 58 laps to go, just before Jimmie Johnson cut a tire to bring out the caution flag. He rolled through pit road and was the first car one lap down, which allowed him to get back on the lead lap. Gordon restarted in 12th place with 50 laps to go. He entered the top-10 with a move around Mark Martin, and took 9th from Ricky Stenhouse with 35 to go. He took 8th from Kenseth with 30 to go, which gave him a 2 point edge for the 10th and final Chase cutoff. Clint Bowyer’s spin with 8 laps to go brought out the caution. Gordon had a difficult time gaining spots on the restart and finished the event in 8th place. However, Joey Logano advanced from 25th to 22nd after the final caution allowing him to edge Gordon for the final Chase spot.

JG’s comments
“It’s unfortunate. We haven’t had the kind of year that this team is capable of. That’s where our focus is the next 10 races is just to know that we put in every bit of effort we possibly could. We fought through a lot of things. It wasn’t pretty but we were getting it done until that caution came out. We still could have made it in. That restart didn’t go the way we needed. So, that’s unfortunate. Yeah, it’s tough. I’m just bummed for this team. They work so hard and I don’t know why we’ve had the kind of rough year that we’ve had. We’re going to do everything we can to go to these next 10 races and step it up to get ourselves in position to be more competitive. Hopefully we can win a race or two and get ourselves in position to be in a better position when it comes to Richmond at this time next year.”

“I don’t know what it is about this track lately with me and this raceteam. We started off so great. We’ve done this before. And then all of a sudden we started fading. I was getting pretty frustrated at that time because it was that kind of condition where you’re real tight landing and real loose off and I was like, ‘How do we fix this? I don’t know how to drive it any different. I don’t know what to tell them.’ But they did an awesome job. We stayed calm. We got a lap down, had a loose wheel, we had all these things thrown at us and yet we came back and finished 8th. I’m blown away that we finished 8th. I think that’s a testament to this race team and the fight we have in us. It was fun to fight back like that. I wish we could have gotten a couple more.”

Jeff Gordon posted a 6th place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway to move within 6 points of the final Chase cutoff. Barring a victory at Richmond, Gordon would need to finish 6 spots ahead of Kurt Busch providing that Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr do not implode.

Gordon started 5th and dove to the inside to take 3rd by the end of lap 2. He bided his time and took 2nd place from Carl Edwards on lap 20. However, Joey Logano took a spot from Gordon prior to the competition caution on lap 25. Gordon picked up a spot on pit road and restarted in 2nd on lap 28. He struggled on the restart and fell to 5th before the caution waved for contact involving Kasey Kahne. After falling to 7th on the ensuing restart, Gordon regrouped and moved to 3rd place by lap 50. He took 2nd from Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 56 prior to a debris caution. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting with the race lead. He pulled away on the restart before a debris caution on lap 77. Edwards beat Gordon off pit road for the race lead. On the restart, Gordon struggled on the outside line and dropped to 5th. He quickly rallied back and took 3rd from Clint Bowyer by lap 83. Bowyer eventually tracked Gordon down and took 3rd on lap 103. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 122 and cycled through in 6th place. He took 5th from Brad Keselowski on lap 150 and moved to 4th when Joey Logano pitted one lap later. Gordon advanced to 3rd on lap 155 with a move around Jamie McMurray.

Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 164 and cycled through in 4th place. The complexion of the race changed when race leader Clint Bowyer blew an engine on lap 193. Gordon gained a spot and restarted in 2nd place. He tracked down Edwards and edged ahead on the backstretch on lap 202. However, Edwards fought back and kept the lead of the event. Logano then passed Gordon for the runner-up spot on lap 203 and took the race lead one lap later. The next caution waved on lap 206 for Denny Hamlin’s spin. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 7th place. He fell to 10th after the restart and soon rallied back to 9th with a move around Edwards and took 8th from Kyle Busch on lap 216. One lap later he took 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr and advanced to 6th with a pass on Kurt Busch. He dropped to 7th when Earnhardt Jr went by on lap 227. Busch passed Gordon on lap 230 to send him to 8th place. Earnhardt Jr faded and Gordon took 7th on lap 236. After Keselowski dropped a cylinder, Gordon moved to 6th on lap 248. He came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 253 and cycled through in 4th place. Kevin Harvick went by to drop Gordon to 5th on lap 258. Gordon fell to 6th when Earnhardt Jr went by on lap 264.

Loose handling hindered Gordon’s efforts and he slipped to 9th on lap 272. A caution for Jimmie Johnson’s spin slowed the field on lap 287. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for a track bar adjustment. He exited pit road in 8th place. Gordon fell to 10th on the restart prior to Brian Vickers’ spin to bring out the caution on lap 294. Gordon lost two spots on the restart and ran 12th when the caution waved for Jeff Burton’s wall contact on lap 298. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 16th place. On the restart with 21 laps to go, he moved from 16th up to 12th. He re-entered the top-10 with 19 laps to go and took 8th from Harvick with 16 to go. Gordon passed Marcos Ambrose for 7th with 12 laps to go. With 3 laps to go, he took 6th from Juan Pablo Montoya.

Turning point
Loose handling after lap 250 sent Gordon from 4th place back to 9th. He was unable to make significant headway until the final stages when he had fresher tires to finish 6th.

JG’s comments
“We had an excellent car and it just got away from us a little bit. The track changed quite a bit and we just couldn’t battle up front for the lead and the win like I thought we could have. I was a little disappointed in that. But it was a great effort by the whole team all weekend long. We’ll take the momentum of these last two decent finishes with solid runs and fast race cars and take it to Richmond and see what we can do. I’m having fun. These last couple weeks we’ve been battling and passing and having a great time out there. That’s all we can ask for. We didn’t do enough of that earlier in the year. That’s why we’re in the position we’re in.”

It wasn’t a much-needed victory for Jeff Gordon, but a solid 7th place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway brought him to within 11 points of the 10th place NASCAR Chase cutoff. Gordon battled for the lead late in the event, but struggled on a restart with 47 laps to go which sealed his fate.

Gordon started 32nd and gained six spots by lap 10. His forward progress continued as he moved up to 21st place by lap 30. He advanced to 19th prior to the first caution for Ryan Truex’s wall contact on lap 40. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 8th on lap 46. Shortly after the restart, he used the high line to take 4th from Denny Hamlin. One lap later he took 3rd from Martin Truex. Gordon moved to the runner-up spot on lap 76 when Kurt Busch slowed and came to pit road. However, Matt Kenseth passed on lap 86 to send Gordon back to 3rd position. He pulled to the inside line and gave up a position to Truex on lap 88. The second caution waved on lap 90 for Josh Wise’s wall contact. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 14th place. He moved up to 12th by lap 100 before the next caution for debris stemming from contact between Joey Logano and Kyle Busch. Gordon re-entered the top-10 on the restart and took 9th from Paul Menard on lap 112. He took 8th from Ryan Newman on lap 150 and passed Aric Almirola for position on lap 159.

As the race neared the 170-lap mark, Gordon moved back into the top-5 with a move around Juan Pablo Montoya. On lap 175, race leader Clint Bowyer was spun by a lapped car. Gordon hit the rear of Bobby Labonte’s car in a chain-reaction and sustained minor damage to the nose of the car. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 4th place — the second car that took 4 tires. He moved up to 3rd on lap 187 and ran behind Carl Edwards and Hamlin. The next caution came on lap 203 for Tony Raines’ wall contact. Gordon came to pit road to remove tape from the grille and restarted in 20th place. He used the high line and took 15th from Joey Logano on lap 223. As the event neared the halfway point, Gordon took 13th from Almirola and 12th from Kasey Kahne. He re-entered the top-10 at the halfway mark by passing Brad Keselowski.

A debris caution on lap 257 brought the leaders to pit road. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted in 8th place. He moved to 6th on lap 270 and re-entered the top-5 on lap 280. Gordon took 4th from Kyle Busch on lap 306 and held the spot until the next caution on lap 334. Following pit stops, Gordon restarted in 4th place and battled Truex for 3rd prior to a caution on lap 358 for a wreck triggered by Brian Vickers. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 3rd behind Edwards and Truex. He dropped to 4th on the restart when Matt Kenseth went by. The next caution on lap 374 allowed Gordon to start on the high line for the restart on lap 381. He took 2nd when Carl Edwards slowed after the restart. Kenseth opened a 1-second lead on Gordon prior to the next caution on lap 439. He slipped to 3rd on the restart just before a wreck that claimed Truex, Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Brad Keselowski. The race was red flagged for 10 minutes for track clean-up. Gordon struggled on the restart and dropped to 7th place with 45 to go. Logano took a spot from Gordon and dropped him to 9th place with 40 laps remaining. He moved to 7th in the final stages when drivers ran out of fuel near the finish.

Turning point
Gordon restarted on the inside line with 47 laps to go and was unable to challenge for the lead after dropping back in traffic.

Jeff Gordon struggled with handling from the outset in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon finished a disappointing 17th and dropped to 14th in the NASCAR standings. He is 26 points behind 10th place — the final Chase cutoff. Gordon will likely need at least 1 win in the next 3 weeks to qualify for the 10-race playoff.

Gordon started 13th and ran 12th when the first caution waved at the end of the opening lap for Clint Bowyer’s spin. He advanced to 11th prior to a caution on lap 8 for David Reutimann’s wall contact. Gordon fell to 13th on the lap 12 restart as the field was slowed two laps later when Austin Dillon lost control and hit JJ Yeley. As the run progressed he slipped back two spots behind Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson on lap 37. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 41 and cycled through in 14th place. Gordon’s progress was hindered by loose handling issues in the corners. He took 13th from Juan Pablo Montoya on lap 65. A caution for Ricky Stenhouse’s wall contact on lap 72 brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. Following a two-tire change, Gordon restarted in 14th place. He dropped to 17th within two laps of the restart, and feel back to 18th when Clint Bowyer passed on lap 85. Gordon gained two spots by lap 93 to run in 16th place. He moved to 15th prior to the next caution on lap 105.

Following a four-tire change, Gordon restarted 17th on lap 110. However, he struggled on the restart and dropped as low as 23rd on lap 113. He rallied back to 20th by lap 117 and took 19th from Trevor Bayne on lap 129. A caution for Dale Earnhardt Jr’s cut tire and subsequent wall contact slowed the field on lap 135. Gordon opted for two tires on pit road and restarted in 14th place. He quickly gained two spots and closed in on Kurt Busch for 11th on lap 143. However, Gordon lost ground on the inside line and settled into 12th place. The next caution waved on lap 149 for Bobby Labonte’s spin. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted 10th on lap 153. He struggled on the restart and dropped out of the top-20 by lap 155. Kyle Busch’s spin on lap 156 brought out the caution and allowed Gordon to come to pit road for adjustments within the fuel window to make it to the finish. After a four-tire change, Gordon restarted in 26th place. His low water mark for the day came on lap 162 when he ran in 28th place — the last car on the lead lap. He regrouped to run 24th with 34 laps to go and re-entered the top-20 on lap 170. Another caution involving Kyle Busch slowed the field with 28 laps to go. He stayed on the track and restarted in 15th with 23 laps to go. He lost for spots and ran 19th with 20 to go. Gordon lost another spot and ran in 20th place with 13 laps to go. He gained a spot and moved to 19th place with 10 to go. He picked up two more spots in the closing stages to finish 17th. Gordon has not posted a top-15 finish in the last 3 races at Michigan.

Turning point
Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the day. He entered the top-10 just once, but was unable to hold the spot.

JG’s comments
“This team has a lot of fight in them and you can never give up. I think similar things last year caught us out into this position and I think similar things are going to get us into it like last year… We just can’t make mistakes. We’ve been making — me personally, and also as a team — too many mistakes.  An early race incident on the Watkins Glen road course has put Jeff Gordon’s hopes of qualifying for the Chase in jeopardy. Gordon crashed on lap 14 and finished 36th in a badly damaged car. He dropped to 13th in the series standings. “It’s unfortunate,” Gordon said. “I had a big run on the 11 (Denny Hamlin). I got up on him and the nose just completely took off. Put me in the wall… put me in the grass and from that point on I was just a passenger. We’ll get it fixed, go out there, and ride around. That’s the penalty for making a mistake like that. You have to go out there and drive something like I’m getting ready to drive around there all day. We pay the price in the points. So, on to next week.”

It seemed as if Jeff Gordon’s 88th career victory was on the horizon at Pocono Raceway. Gordon led Kasey Kahne on the final restart, but gave his Hendrick Motorsports teammate the opportunity to use the outside line to power past. Gordon finished second, which tied his best finish of 2013. In addition, he moved up to 9th in the series points standings. “I’ve given away a lot more races than I’ve won,” Gordon said. “I’m happy we were in position. I’m bummed it didn’t work out.”

Gordon started 22nd and took a wide line into turn 1. Juan Pablo Montoya clipped Ricky Stenhouse and sent the #17 car spinning. Gordon was just ahead of the melee and moved up to 19th place. He advanced to 16th by lap 10 and ran 13th when the second caution waved on lap 15 for Denny Hamlin’s wall contact. Gordon restarted 15th following pit stops. He dropped back on the restart and ran 17th on lap 20. As the run progressed, he moved through traffic and ran 12th on lap 26. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 32 with a pass on Tony Stewart. Due to alternating pit stop strategies, Gordon moved up to 3rd place on lap 38. He assumed the race lead on lap 42 when Kurt Busch came to pit road. Gordon came to pit road one lap later for fuel and tires. Following the stop, Gordon ran in 8th place. He quickly moved to 6th with passes on Paul Menard and Joey Logano on lap 49. A caution on lap 54 for David Gilliland’s wall contact brought some of the leaders to pit road. Gordon stayed out and restarted in 3rd place. He held the spot until a green flag pit stop on lap 72.

The complexion of the event changed on lap 77 when race leader Jimmie Johnson cut a tire and damaged the right side of the #48 car. Gordon stayed out and restarted 3rd on lap 82. He ran behind Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski for 15 laps before a caution for David Stremme’s cut tire. The #24 car came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted in 7th place. He slipped to 9th just after the restart on the inside line, but rallied back to 8th prior to a caution for Aric Almoriola’s spin on lap 102. Gordon dove low on the restart to move up to 5th with 53 laps to go. A multi-car wreck involving Danica Patrick, Jeff Burton, and Paul Menard brought out the caution with 50 to go. He passed Kyle Busch for 4th with 39 laps to go. Gordon came in for his final green flag pit stop with 30 to go.

Gordon held the 3rd spot through the cycle of pit stops behind his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He passed Earnhardt Jr with 22 laps to go, but ran 6 seconds behind Kahne for the race lead. Gordon was aided by a debris caution with 12 laps to go, which allowed him to restart next to Kahne. Gordon was on the inside line as Kahne opted for the outside lane. Gordon took the race lead from Kahne with a pass in turn 3 with 8 laps to go. Matt Kenseth’s spin brought out a caution with 4 laps to go and set up a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon chose the inside lane for the restart.

On the restart, Kahne powered past Gordon in the tunnel turn to take the race lead. Nevertheless, Gordon posted a 2nd place effort — tying his best finish of the 2013 season.

Turning point
Gordon ran distantly behind Kahne in the closing stages. However, a caution flag for debris on the track with 12 laps to go bunched the field and gave him a chance at the victory. He took the race lead, but the final caution for Matt Kenseth’s spin set up a restart. Gordon moved to protect the inside line, which allowed Kahne to power past on the outside.

JG’s comments
“Isn’t it funny how our emotions go up and down in this sport? Going into the race if you told me that I could finish second, I’d say that was a great birthday gift. But when you take the lead from Kasey the way we did on that restart, I thought we had him. He was better than us, but I thought we could hold him off. I got a perfect restart on that last one. I probably jumped him a little bit. I moved out front of him and it looked like I needed to block the inside. So I kind of protected the inside and he blasted up there on the outside. Flat outdrove me thru Turn 1. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get this win. This team has worked so hard to put ourselves in position. A little disappointed, but also excited because it was a good points day for us and we needed that.”

Jeff Gordon’s streak of summer consistency continued with a 7th place effort in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was Gordon’s 4th top-10 finish in the last 5 races. Gordon is now 10th in the series standings — the first time he’s been in the top-10 since Phoenix (second race of the season).

Gordon started 9th and moved around Marcos Ambrose to take 8th in the opening 5 laps. He took 7th from Denny Hamlin on lap 13 and held the spot until a round of green flag pit stops on lap 28. After a 14-second stop, Gordon returned to the race in 9th place. He took 8th from Matt Kenseth at the 100-mile mark and moved into 7th with a pass on Kasey Kahne. He advanced to 6th with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 50. Gordon took the race lead by staying out during a cycle of green flag stops. Following a caution flag stop on lap 60, Gordon restarted in 8th place. However, he was caught in the outside line on the restart and dropped to 12th on lap 65. The second caution waved at the halfway point when Jeff Burton stopped on the track after breaking a gear. Gordon elected to stay on the track and restarted in 3rd place.

On the restart Gordon dropped to 5th after Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jimmie Johnson went by. One lap later he fell to 7th after Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth passed. Ryan Newman sent Gordon back to 8th place on lap 90. He came in for a green flag stop on lap 95 and ran 20th following the stop. He advanced to 7th place because he was off the leaders’ pit sequence. A caution on lap 114 brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. He restarted in 16th place with 100 miles to go in the event. Gordon steadily gained ground and ran 13th on lap 122. Five laps later he moved into 11th place. Gordon cycled back to the lead during the final green flag pit stop sequence with 25 laps to go. He came to pit road for the final time with 21 laps to go and cycled through in 13th place. With 12 laps to go, he advanced to 8th place as pit stops continued. Two laps later, Gordon moved to 7th place.

Turning point
Gordon struggled with handling at times but was unable to get track position where he could contend for a top-5 finish.

New Hampshire In-Car Audio

Although he ran in the top-10 for the balance of the Camping World RV 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon needed a late-race rally to post a hard-fought 10th place effort. Gordon fell to 19th after a pit stop with 80 to go, and then overcame a spin with 44 laps to go. He went from 25th to 10th in the final 40 laps. Gordon moved up to 11th in the series standings, 2 points outside the top-10 Chase cutoff.

Gordon started 5th on an overcast day in New England. The first caution waved on lap 5 for Joey Logano’s spin and wall contact in turn 1. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 6th when Denny Hamlin went by. The second caution came on lap 14 for Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears colliding on the frontstretch. Gordon moved around Dale Earnhardt Jr to take 4th on lap 22. However, while battling a tight handling issue, he fell to 5th on lap 55 when Matt Kenseth passed. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 77 and returned to the race in 6th place. Following a debris caution, Gordon gained 2 spots on the restart to run 4th on lap 85. He fell back to 5th prior to a caution for Denny Hamlin’s cut tire on lap 123. On the ensuing round of pit stops, Gordon opted for 4 tires and restarted in 10th place. He moved around Carl Edwards and ran 8th on lap 133. Gordon dropped to 9th just before a debris caution at the halfway point of the race. Gordon changed two tires and restarted in 8th.

Gordon advanced to 6th by lap 180. He gained 3 spots during a round of caution flag pit stops with 100 laps to go. However, on the restart on the inside line, Gordon fell to 6th before a debris caution on lap 210. Following a caution for Danica Patrick’s spin, Gordon came to pit road for 2 tires. He fell from 8th to 19th after a slower car came in for a stop directly ahead of him on exit. The next caution waved on lap 225 after Matt Kenseth hit Kurt Busch, which collected Ryan Newman. Gordon held the low line and advanced to 17th place. However, he lost 3 spots on the restart prior to the next caution on lap 238 for a crash involving Ricky Stenouse, Danica Patrick, and Travis Kvapil. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 25th place on lap 242. On fresher tires, he advanced to 20th with 50 laps to go.

With 44 to go, Paul Menard hit Gordon coming off turn 2, sending the #24 car into a spin. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 25th. He moved to 20th with 35 laps to go and took 18th from Clint Bowyer with 28 to go. Two laps later he passed Menard for 17th. Gordon kept up a swift pace with fresher tires and took 14th from Dale Earnhardt Jr with 20 laps to go. He passed Bobby Labonte for 12th with 14 laps to go and moved to 11th around Carl Edwards with 11 to go. However, Edwards moved around Gordon to drop him to 12th with 6 laps to go. A debris caution with 5 laps to go brought a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon moved up to 11th for the restart after Denny Hamlin came to pit road for tires. He moved to 10th when Tony Stewart ran out of fuel with 2 to go.

Turning point
A pit stop on lap 219 hindered Gordon’s track position. He came onto pit road running in 8th place, but departed in 19th place after having to avoid a slower car coming in. The timing couldn’t have been worse since it was the final round of pit stops for the leaders. Nevertheless, Gordon regrouped in the final 40 laps to post a 10th place effort.

Coke Zero 400 In-Car Audio

Never underestimate the importance of pit stall selection. After running in the top-5 in the late stages of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Jeff Gordon got into the grass to avoid Joe Nemechek’s car on pit road and dropped outside the top-10. He was later swept up in a multi-car wreck while running in the middle of the pack and finished 34th. Gordon fell to 14th in the series points standings, 12 points outside the top-10. At the front of the field, Jimmie Johnson led the most laps en route to a sweep of the Cup series races at Daytona in 2013.

Gordon started 23rd and entered the top-20 within 2 laps. Using the middle line, he moved to 13th on lap 8. However, he dropped back in the draft and ran 21st on lap 13. The first caution waved on lap 24 for Paul Menard’s engine. Pit stops followed with Gordon opting for 2 tires and restarting 17th on lap 27. At the 100-mile mark, Gordon ran on the outside line in 22nd place. On lap 50, he moved to the middle lane and advanced to 17th in a draft with Trevor Bayne. However, 5 laps later he had slipped to 23rd. A caution for Joey Logano’s wall contact on lap 71 brought Gordon to pit road for tires and fuel. He restarted 23rd on lap 75. Gordon moved to the middle lane and advanced to 12th place behind Jimmie Johnson in the draft. He entered the top-10 for the first time just before the halfway point of the event.

On lap 92, he moved up to 3rd in a drafting line behind Jamie McMurray and Jimmie Johnson. The next caution came at lap 98 for a wreck involving Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex, and Juan Pablo Montoya. Gordon changed 2 tires during the round of pit stops and restarted in 3rd. Gordon ran 4th in single file for several laps before a caution with 33 laps to go for a crash involving Aric Almirola and David Stremme. After coming to pit road, Gordon moved to the grass to avoid Joe Nemechek and dropped from 4th to 12th for the restart with 28 to go. He briefly dropped to 14th before getting into a draft behind Kyle Busch and moved to 11th with 22 laps to go. Gordon ran the high line in 15th place with Carl Edwards directly behind him with 16 to go.

Mired in traffic, Gordon was caught up in a multi-car wreck with 11 laps to go. Gordon sustained heavy damage to the right side of the car. The race was red flagged for nearly 10 minutes for track cleanup. With a damaged radiator,

Turning point
After the final pit stop, Gordon got into the grass trying to avoid Joe Nemechek and dropped from 4th to 12th for the restart with 28 laps to go.

JG’s comments
JEFF GORDON POST-RACE COMMENTS (34th place): “We lost some track position there, we had a really strong car. A really good handling car, so I was happy about that… We were sitting there kind of riding along hoping that outside lane — I can’t say we were riding because it was pretty aggressive. But, just nowhere to go just riding the outside lane hoping that it would start to make progress. I don’t know, I just saw somebody spin in front of me (Hamlin) and we all tried to avoid him. Matt (Kenseth) got sideways and I didn’t have anywhere to go there. It got the right front and that just fed the car into the wall. So, it was unfortunate. I still think we had a great shot at getting the car to the front. We had a very strong race car. You gotta survive before you can ever get there. You gotta finish too.”
