May 10 – – Jeff Gordon’s 5th place finish in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway wasn’t the coveted victory, but provided that solid finish that he needed after a few subpar finishes over the last few weeks. Gordon kept his lead in the series standings as his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin claimed his second victory of the season. Gordon holds a 29 point lead over Tony Stewart at the top of the standings. More importantly, he is 337 points ahead of 13th place — putting him comfortably in position to qualify for the Chase for the Championship.

May 2 – – Jeff Gordon knew he didn’t have the car to compete with Kyle Busch for the victory at Richmond International Raceway. Crew chief Steve Letarte gambled by keeping Gordon on the track during a late caution period to allow him to inherit the lead– focusing solely on a victory. However, a series of caution flags allowed Busch to close in and eventually pass Gordon for the lead with 50 laps to go. Older tires hindered Gordon’s efforts and he faded to 8th place at the finish. Nevertheless, he re-assumed the series points lead after losing the top spot at Talladega.

April 25 – – It should have stayed in mothballs. In the first race for the Pepsi Challenger in 1983, Darrell Waltrip drilled a dirt bank at Daytona Internaional Speedway, careened back on the track and hit the retaining wall. Twenty-six years later, Jeff Gordon’s day in the Pepsi Challenger was hindered by the same effect — a major wreck on the track. Gordon was involved in a lap 7 wreck at Talladega Superspeedway after being clipped by Matt Kenseth. The front and rear of the car was destroyed. Repairs were made and Gordon finished in 37th. He dropped to 2nd in the series points standings.

Post Crash Comments

IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU CAN GET THE CAR BACK OUT? “I think this is the same way this Pepsi Challenger ended up in ’83. So it sure didn’t look good. It was driving good. We were having a good time there. I was actually working well with Matt (Kenseth) getting up to the front through the middle. I am not really sure what happened. I was just kinda cruising along there in the middle. Matt got up there, I think behind, maybe the No. 11 and he went low and so I was just cruising on up the middle.

“Matt went down with the No. 1 car and I guess what it was, whoever that was on the inside, I don’t think, there just wasn’t enough room. He got underneath Matt, Matt came up and I was already there.

“The car is destroyed. That is Talladega. I don’t know if we are going to be able to fix that. I know these guys are going to work real hard to try and get it back out there and get some points. Just unfortunate.

“There are so many different grooves to race out there. Matt went low so I was just going to go up the middle, it had been working so well for us up to that point. Somebody got to the inside him and closed the door.

“Things were going well, we were having a good time. Just cruising up the middle. Matt got hooked up with the No. 1 car. They started to go low and I think somebody got inside of them just as I was getting to the outside or up the middle of Matt. I don’t if he knew I was there, didn’t know I was there or what happened. But, I just got squeezed and started a big wreck.

“I didn’t see anything out of line. There was nothing. I don’t think that wreck was caused by over aggressive driving. I mean, every race and every wreck I look to see what I could have done different. Looking back on it, I wish I would have just stayed behind Matt. But that is always hindsight. We’re sitting here. It is unfortunate. It is not obviously going to be the day we were looking for.”

Carl Edwards & Brad Keselowsk Final Lap Incident Video

Carl Edwards comments on the the final lap of the Aaron’s 499.  Edwards goes on to say that someone will get killed before Nascar changes the double yellow line rule.  Edwards blocked Keselowski coming to the checkered flag which resulted in Edwards getting turned around and flipped airborne into the fence in spectacular fashion by Ryan Newman.  There were 8 minor injuries to fans in that area of the crash.

April 19 – – Jeff Gordon battled handling issues for the balance of the Subway 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. However, what looked like a solid top-10 finish became a 25th place effort due to a late mistake by the pit crew. At the front of the field, Mark Martin scored the third consecutive victory for Hendrick Motorsports. It was Martin’s 36th career win and first as a member of HMS. Gordon still holds the points lead heading to next Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

April 6 – – Jeff Gordon returned to victory lane after a 47-race drought with a dominating victory in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Gordon led the most laps but was running 3rd in the closing stages. A late race caution brought the leaders to pit road where Gordon beat his competitors back onto the track. He held off Jimmie Johnson for his first victory of the season and 82nd of his career. It was also his first career win at the Texas track. “This is the best place we possibly could have won because it alluded us for so long,” Gordon said. Good ride Cowboy, good ride.

March 30 – – Despite leading nearly 150 laps, despite starting on the pole, and despite having the preferred first pit stall, Jeff Gordon was once again unable to snap his 48-race winless streak. Gordon finished 4th in the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Speedway after battling a tight handling car over the final 200 laps. Jimmie Johnson, the unquestioned master of Martinsville in the 21st century, won for the fifth time in the last six races at the track with a late pass on Denny Hamlin.

March 23 – – Another week and another solid race for Jeff Gordon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the long-awaited victory he had been looking for, but instead a 4th place finish in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon struggled with a tight handling car on longer runs, which made contending for the victory a near impossibility. Nevertheless, he scored his fourth top-10 finish of the season and extended his points lead. The race was dominated by Kyle Busch who led more than 350 of the 500 laps en route to his second win of the season

March 8 – – Jeff Gordon came within one daring late race move of his first victory of the season before settling for a runner-up finish in the Kobalt 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Gordon, driving the black and silver National Guard Chevrolet, led the race with less than 80 laps to go, but fell to 4th on pit road after a dropped lug nut. He battled back and got a needed green/white/checkered finish to close the gap on the leaders. He restarted in 3rd and was edged near the wall by eventual winner Kurt Busch before getting around Carl Edwards. However, he was unable to run down Busch for the victory.

March 1 – – Jeff Gordon seemed destined for a top-three finish in the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. However, a mental mistake with 65 laps to go wound up costing him a potential victory. Gordon missed pit road, locked up his brakes, and wound up shredding the left front tire and the fender on the DuPont Chevrolet. After patchwork repairs, Gordon went to work on the track and rallied for a solid 6th place finish– which allowed him to take the points lead for the first time since October 2007. He also surpassed 20,000 laps led in his Cup series career when he led the mid-stages of the event.

Jeff Gordon’s winless drought will continue at least for another week, but his runner-up finish to Matt Kenseth in the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway showed that his race team has made significant strides on the downforce tracks over the off-season. “We certainly are going to win if we put cars out there like this,” Gordon said. “We still have a little bit of work to do but I’m excited because we ran so good. We made an adjustment that made my car just a little too tight at the end.” Gordon started 6th, ran in the top-three virtually all night, and led significant portions of the mid-late stages of the race. However, he was beaten off pit road by Kenseth with 35 laps to go. Gordon had called for a handling adjustment that made the car too tight on the final run. Although he closed in on Kenseth as the laps wound down, he was unable to get around the leader. Nevertheless, the runner-up finish thrusts him up to 2nd in the series standings and gives the team something to build on heading to Las Vegas next weekend.
