Jeff Gordon’s streak of summer consistency continued with a 7th place effort in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was Gordon’s 4th top-10 finish in the last 5 races. Gordon is now 10th in the series standings — the first time he’s been in the top-10 since Phoenix (second race of the season).

Gordon started 9th and moved around Marcos Ambrose to take 8th in the opening 5 laps. He took 7th from Denny Hamlin on lap 13 and held the spot until a round of green flag pit stops on lap 28. After a 14-second stop, Gordon returned to the race in 9th place. He took 8th from Matt Kenseth at the 100-mile mark and moved into 7th with a pass on Kasey Kahne. He advanced to 6th with a pass on Kurt Busch on lap 50. Gordon took the race lead by staying out during a cycle of green flag stops. Following a caution flag stop on lap 60, Gordon restarted in 8th place. However, he was caught in the outside line on the restart and dropped to 12th on lap 65. The second caution waved at the halfway point when Jeff Burton stopped on the track after breaking a gear. Gordon elected to stay on the track and restarted in 3rd place.

On the restart Gordon dropped to 5th after Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jimmie Johnson went by. One lap later he fell to 7th after Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth passed. Ryan Newman sent Gordon back to 8th place on lap 90. He came in for a green flag stop on lap 95 and ran 20th following the stop. He advanced to 7th place because he was off the leaders’ pit sequence. A caution on lap 114 brought Gordon to pit road for adjustments. He restarted in 16th place with 100 miles to go in the event. Gordon steadily gained ground and ran 13th on lap 122. Five laps later he moved into 11th place. Gordon cycled back to the lead during the final green flag pit stop sequence with 25 laps to go. He came to pit road for the final time with 21 laps to go and cycled through in 13th place. With 12 laps to go, he advanced to 8th place as pit stops continued. Two laps later, Gordon moved to 7th place.

Turning point
Gordon struggled with handling at times but was unable to get track position where he could contend for a top-5 finish.

Although he ran in the top-10 for the balance of the Camping World RV 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon needed a late-race rally to post a hard-fought 10th place effort. Gordon fell to 19th after a pit stop with 80 to go, and then overcame a spin with 44 laps to go. He went from 25th to 10th in the final 40 laps. Gordon moved up to 11th in the series standings, 2 points outside the top-10 Chase cutoff.

Gordon started 5th on an overcast day in New England. The first caution waved on lap 5 for Joey Logano’s spin and wall contact in turn 1. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 6th when Denny Hamlin went by. The second caution came on lap 14 for Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears colliding on the frontstretch. Gordon moved around Dale Earnhardt Jr to take 4th on lap 22. However, while battling a tight handling issue, he fell to 5th on lap 55 when Matt Kenseth passed. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 77 and returned to the race in 6th place. Following a debris caution, Gordon gained 2 spots on the restart to run 4th on lap 85. He fell back to 5th prior to a caution for Denny Hamlin’s cut tire on lap 123. On the ensuing round of pit stops, Gordon opted for 4 tires and restarted in 10th place. He moved around Carl Edwards and ran 8th on lap 133. Gordon dropped to 9th just before a debris caution at the halfway point of the race. Gordon changed two tires and restarted in 8th.

Gordon advanced to 6th by lap 180. He gained 3 spots during a round of caution flag pit stops with 100 laps to go. However, on the restart on the inside line, Gordon fell to 6th before a debris caution on lap 210. Following a caution for Danica Patrick’s spin, Gordon came to pit road for 2 tires. He fell from 8th to 19th after a slower car came in for a stop directly ahead of him on exit. The next caution waved on lap 225 after Matt Kenseth hit Kurt Busch, which collected Ryan Newman. Gordon held the low line and advanced to 17th place. However, he lost 3 spots on the restart prior to the next caution on lap 238 for a crash involving Ricky Stenouse, Danica Patrick, and Travis Kvapil. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 25th place on lap 242. On fresher tires, he advanced to 20th with 50 laps to go.

With 44 to go, Paul Menard hit Gordon coming off turn 2, sending the #24 car into a spin. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 25th. He moved to 20th with 35 laps to go and took 18th from Clint Bowyer with 28 to go. Two laps later he passed Menard for 17th. Gordon kept up a swift pace with fresher tires and took 14th from Dale Earnhardt Jr with 20 laps to go. He passed Bobby Labonte for 12th with 14 laps to go and moved to 11th around Carl Edwards with 11 to go. However, Edwards moved around Gordon to drop him to 12th with 6 laps to go. A debris caution with 5 laps to go brought a green/white/checkered finish. Gordon moved up to 11th for the restart after Denny Hamlin came to pit road for tires. He moved to 10th when Tony Stewart ran out of fuel with 2 to go.

Turning point
A pit stop on lap 219 hindered Gordon’s track position. He came onto pit road running in 8th place, but departed in 19th place after having to avoid a slower car coming in. The timing couldn’t have been worse since it was the final round of pit stops for the leaders. Nevertheless, Gordon regrouped in the final 40 laps to post a 10th place effort.

After a bad mid-race break with an ill-timed caution flag, Jeff Gordon fought back from 25th place and seemed on the verge of a possible victory at Kentucky Speedway. However, he faded back from 3rd to 9th on the final restart with 17 laps to go before finishing in 8th place. It was Gordon’s first back-to-back top-10 finishes of the season. He moved to 12th in the NASCAR standings, just 2 points outside the top-10.

Gordon started 12th and moved into the top-10 by the end of lap 2. He ran 9th at the competition caution on lap 30. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted 7th on lap 34. He moved to 6th prior to the next caution on lap 39 for Denny Hamlin’s tire. Gordon entered the top-5 for the first time on lap 47 with a move around Dale Earnhardt Jr. Two laps later, Kurt Busch made another reckless move on the track and hit Brad Keselowski in the tri-oval. Keselowski spun onto the apron and collected three drivers including Greg Biffle when he came across the track. The event was red-flagged for track clean-up with Gordon in 3rd place. After a 20-minute delay, racing resumed on lap 55. Gordon fell to 4th on the restart and dropped another spot when Kasey Kahne passed on lap 78. He dropped t0 6th prior to a round of green flag pit stops on lap 88. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire on lap 89 trapped Gordon a lap down. However, he took the wave-around to get back on the lead lap.

He restarted 21st and worked his way into the top-20 before a debris caution on lap 108. Gordon stayed on the track and restarted in 9th place. However, he faded to 18th within two laps of the restart. He steadily regained spots and ran 16th at the halfway point of the event. Gordon came to pit road on lap 148 for a green flag pit stop. However, Denny Hamlin’s wall contact brought out the caution. The #24 crew changed two tires and received the free pass to get back on the lead lap. He restarted in 25th place on lap 153 and re-entered the top-20 within 10 laps of the restart. Gordon moved to 15th on lap 180 and ran 13th when a caution for debris slowed the field on lap 195. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted 12th. He took 10th from Kevin Harvick with 50 to go and passed Carl Edwards for 9th with 47 to go. Gordon took 8th from Jamie McMurray with 40 to go and took 7th from Kyle Busch three laps later. As the laps wound down, he passed Brian Vickers for 6th with 29 laps to go. A caution for Vickers wall contact with 26 to go brought the lead lap drivers to pit road.

Gordon gained two spots on pit road and restarted in 4th place with 21 to go. He moved up to 3rd when Jimmie Johnson spun in turn 2 after the restart. However, on the restart, Joey Logano dived to the inside of Gordon and dropped the #24 car back to 9th with 16 to go. He moved up to 8th with 11 laps to go, but ran distantly behind the top-5. Gordon posted his first back-to-back top-10 finishes of the season and moved up to 12th in the series points standings.

Turning point
Gordon was on the verge of a top-5 finish if the race stayed green to the finish. However, a caution flag coupled with a quick pit stop thrust Gordon into the top-4 for the restart with 21 laps to go. But on the restart, Joey Logano dove low on the track, which forced Gordon into the middle line resulting in a loss of positions.

JG’s comments
“We had an awesome fast car that is for sure. I think we passed more cars than anybody. These pit stops just aren’t going our way. If we try to stretch it doesn’t work our way. If we try to pit early it doesn’t work our way. I don’t know, you just have to keep working hard at it and hope they fall your way eventually. Pit stops were great when we had them. The car was awesome on the race track. It took a little while for it to come in and that last restart I kind of timed it and the #18 (Kyle Busch) spun his tires and stacked us up, then cars were four-wide. That didn’t certainly work out in our favor.”

Jeff Gordon battled track position for the balance of the Subway 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. He found himself outside the top-20 at one point, but rallied back for his 2nd top-10 finish in the last 3 races dating back to 2012.

Gordon started 5th and took 4th from Tony Stewart by lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 22 when Scott Riggs hit the wall. Gordon opted to stay out and hold onto 4th place. Kevin Harvick went by on lap 31 to drop Gordon to 5th place. The second caution came on lap 47 for Kyle Busch’s spin in turn two. Pit stops followed with Gordon changing two tires. He restarted in 11th place after 7 cars stayed out. He moved to 9th on lap 64 when polesitter Mark Martin pitted. A caution on lap 66 for Dave Blaney’s spin slowed the field. Gordon worked his way to 8th on lap 80 with a pass on Matt Kenseth. The next caution came just before the 100-lap mark when Ryan Newman cut a tire and hit the wall. Gordon’s crew changed four tires during pit stops and he restarted in 19th place.

On the restart, Gordon dropped to 21st place. Newman’s second contact with the wall in the event slowed the field on lap 142. Gordon came to pit road and restarted 19th. He worked his way up to 16th by lap 175, but ran more than 12 seconds behind race leader Carl Edwards. The sixth caution waved on lap 185 after Danica Patrick cut a tire and slammed the wall. Following pit stops, Gordon restarted 11th on lap 196 and moved into the top-10 on lap 200. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire brought the field to pit road with 74 laps to go. Gordon changed 2 tires and restarted in 9th place.

Gordon dropped to 10th with 68 to go and lost another spot to Joey Logano one lap later. Gordon re-assumed the 10th spot with 48 to go. He took 9th from Kevin Harvick with 30 laps to go. However, he dropped to 10th with 6 laps to go when Jeff Burton went by. Ken Schrader’s wall contact with 3 laps to go brought out the caution and a green/white/checkered finish. On the final restart, Gordon took 9th from Burton where he came across the finish line.

Turning point
The Pepsi Max Chevrolet tended to work better on longer runs. As Gordon was making headway into the top-10, a caution with 74 laps to go brought the field to pit road. Gordon lost spots on the restart, which hindered his forward march in the closing stages.

Jeff Gordon scored his 87th career win as he played fuel mileage strategy to perfection at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The win allowed Gordon to finish in the top-10 for the 18th time in 20 NASCAR Cup series seasons.

Gordon started 11th and fell to 13th by lap 3. He moved back up to run 11th by lap 20 while battling a tight handling condition. Gordon entered the top-10 on lap 25 with a pass on Mark Martin. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 47 and cycled through in 9th place. He soon lost a spot to Brad Keselowski on lap 51. However, he made steady progress as the run continued and ran 8th on lap 70. The first caution waved on lap 78 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 7th place. He took 6th from Carl Edwards and entered the top-5 with a pass on Jimmie Johnson by the 100-lap mark. Gordon passed Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth in the next 10 laps to run 3rd on lap 110. Green flag pit stops came on lap 131. A caution for debris slowed the field 10 laps later. Gordon opted for 4 tires on the pit stop and restarted in 11th place.

Ricky Stenouse’s wall contact slowed the field on lap 156. Gordon took fuel only on the pit stop and restarted 10th. On fresher tires than most drivers ahead of him, Gordon moved to 5th place with 85 to go. Gordon stayed on the track during a green flag pit stop sequence and led a lap before coming to pit road. He returned to the race in 8th position and quickly moved to 6th. With 40 laps to go. Gordon moved to 4th as Brad Keselowski clinched the 2012 Sprint Cup championship after Jimmie Johnson dropped out of the race.

Gordon took 3rd from Carl Edwards with 36 to go. Since he didn’t need to make another stop, Gordon took the lead after Kyle Busch and Martin Truex pitted. He led Clint Bowyer by more than 2 seconds in the closing laps and scored his second victory of 2012. Gordon has visited Victory Lane at every track he’s ever competed on in the NASCAR Cup series — except Kentucky.

Turning point
Gordon stretched his fuel to the final pit stop and didn’t need to come in when race leaders Kyle Busch and Martin Truex came to pit road with under 15 laps to go.

Jimmie Johnson took the lead from Brad Keselowski with 14 laps to go and held off Kyle Busch after a late race restart to score the victory in the Tums 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson’s victory — coupled with Keselowski’s 6th place finish — moved Johnson into the points lead. Jeff Gordon led 91 laps in the race and finished in 7th place.

Gordon started 11th and moved up to 8th by the end of lap 6. He took 7th fron Tony Stewart on lap 11 and entered the top-5 on lap 17. He passed Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch to take 3rd place on lap 25. Gordon moved into the runner-up spot with a pass on Brian Vickers on lap 33. The first caution waved on lap 46 for David Stremme’s cut tire. Gordon held the 2nd spot thru a round of pit stops, but dropped to 3rd when Kyle Busch went by after the restart. Gordon re-assumed the 2nd position after passing Busch on lap 62. Gordon took the race lead from Jimmie Johnson on lap 68. A caution for David Gilliland’s cut tire slowed the field on lap 98. Gordon dropped to 3rd following a round of pit stops. He moved to 2nd on lap 106 and moved back into the race lead on lap 107. The next caution waved for Travil Kvapil’s spin on lap 127. Gordon stayed on the track and lost the lead to Brian Vickers on lap 147. Denny Hamlin sent Gordon back to 3rd on lap 148. A caution for Kyle Busch’s spin slowed the field on lap 150. Gordon came in for a four-tire change and restarted in 18th place.

Gordon moved through race traffic into the top-10 by lap 174. His forward march continued as he took 7th from Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 180, and moved around Kurt Busch for 6th on lap 185. He ran 4th when the caution waved on lap 199 for Marcos Ambrose’s spin. Pit stops followed with Gordon exiting in 2nd place. He took the lead from Johnson on the restart. After leading lap 215, Gordon passed Darrell Waltrip for the 6th most laps led in NASCAR history. However, Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson went by on lap 226 and sent Gordon back to 3rd place. He regrouped and took 2nd from Johnson just before the halfway mark. Kasey Kahne took 2nd from Gordon on lap 318 and Hamlin sent him to 4th on lap 324. Brian Vickers passed on lap 326 to push Gordon back to 5th, and Johnson sent him to 6th on lap 331. He fell to 7th when Kyle Busch went by. Gordon came to pit road on lap 337 for a green flag pit stop. Gordon ran 4th following the pit stop cycle. He moved to 3rd on lap 373 when Hamlin slowed on the track.

Johnson and Busch sent Gordon back to 5th on lap 391 prior to a caution for Hamlin whose car (and Chase hopes) died on the track. Gordon came to pit road for tires and restarted in 5th. He moved around Kahne to take 4th with 100 laps to go. He took 3rd from Busch with 83 to go and set his sights on Johnson and Bowyer at the front of the field. Gordon took 2nd from Bowyer with 70 to go. A caution for Juan Pablo Montoya’s spin after contact with Johnson slowed the field with 62 to go. Gordon ran 2nd to Johnson before a caution for Kevin Harvick’s engine with 25 laps to go. Brad Keselowski and Earnhardt Jr stayed on the track during the caution. Johnson and Gordon restarted 3rd and 4th with 19 to go. On the restart, Gordon dropped to 6th on the outside line before regrouping to take 5th from Earnhardt Jr with 16 to go. He took 4th from Keselowski with 12 to go. Two laps later, the caution waved for Earnhardt Jr’s spin in turn 2 after contact from Carl Edwards. On the restart, Gordon faded on the outside line. He dropped to 5th with 5 to go in a door-banging duel with Bowyer and lost 6th place on the final lap to Keselowski. The 7th place finish was Gordon’s 8th top-10 in the last 10 races. However, he trails points leader Johnson by 54 points with just 3 races to go.

Turning point
Gordon seemed to be tracking down Johnson for the race lead in the closing stages when a caution with 25 laps to go bunched the field. Gordon was unable to get close to the lead after that.

JG’s comments
“It was strong, especially the first half — that meant a lot to me and this team. This team made an amazing effort. The pit stops were great and the car was dominant. I think we wore the left rear tire out or something on the long run. But the last thing we wanted was to be on the outside of those last two restarts. We were and it cost us.”

Matt Kenseth might be leaving Roush Racing at the end of the 2012 season, but he’s creating quite a final act with his second victory in the Chase. Kenseth scored the win at Kansas Speedway in an event that featured 14 caution flags because of the repaved track surface. Jeff Gordon struggled with handling on the final run of the day and finished 10th. He trails points leader Brad Keselowski by 51 points with just 4 races to go.

Gordon started 19th and moved up to 15th by the end of lap 5. He was running 14th when the first caution waved on lap 31 for Casey Mears’ wall contact. Gordon pitted for tires and restarted in 20th place. He moved to 17th but was unable to make significant headway before the next caution on lap 70 for AJ Allemdinger’s cut tire. Gordon opted for 2 tires and restarted in 7th place. He moved to 6th before a caution for Jeff Burton’s wall contact on lap 83. Gordon slipped to 9th after the restart, but eventually worked his way around Regan Smith to take 8th place on lap 110. Aric Almirola’s cut tire on lap 123 slowed the field. Gordon came in for tires and restarted in 4th place. Jimmie Johnson crashed on lap 136 to bring out the caution. Johnson got loose exiting turn 4 and backed the Lowes Chevrolet into the wall. Repairs were made on pit road which allowed Johnson to stay on the lead lap.

On the restart, Gordon moved to the runner-up position behind race leader Matt Kenseth. One lap later, Bobby Labonte’s wall contact slowed the field. Gordon dropped to 3rd on the restart before Danica Patrick’s crash brought out the caution on lap 156. He came to pit road for 2 tires and restarted 7th because of some drivers opting not to pit. Gordon dropped to 9th before a caution on lap 165 for Tony Stewart’s spin. A caution for Greg Biffle’s crash with 92 to go slowed the field with Gordon in 10th place. With 85 to go, Ryan Newman hit Kyle Busch and created a wreck in turn 4. With 54 laps to go, Almirola’s crash brought out the caution and the final round of pit stops ensued. Gordon restarted in 9th place after opting for 4 tires. He moved to 8th before a caution for Sam Hornish’s cut tire with 33 laps to go. Gordon dropped to 9th with 14 to go when Brad Keselowski went by. Two laps later Johnson went by Gordon to drop him to 10th place where he finished the event. It was Gordon’s 7th top-10 in the last 9 races.

Turning point
A four-tire change during the final round of pit stops didn’t work out to Gordon’s advantage. He battled handling issues in the late stages of the event and dropped to 10th place.

JG’s comments
“It wasn’t that bad. It was hard to pass you just couldn’t reach the edge of the grip level really easy. My car stuck pretty good so I had pretty decent grip on the restarts and we were able to make up some spots. We did pretty good strategy so all in all it was a decent day for us. I thought we could pull off a top five at one point, but we just didn’t.”

New Hampshire In-Car Audio

Kasey Kahne held off a late charge by Denny Hamlin to claim his second win of the season and 14th of his career. Jeff Gordon posted his fourth top-6 finish in the last 5 races with a 6th place effort in the Lenox 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. However, Gordon remains 17th in the series standings and will need at least two victories to qualify for the Chase for the Championship.

Gordon started 8th and moved up to 6th by lap 10. He entered the top-5 with a pass on Martin Truex on lap 23, and took 4th from Clint Bowyer on lap 32. Gordon led 1 lap before coming to pit road during a green flag stop sequence on lap 68. He returned to the race in 3rd position due to then-race leader Kyle Busch’s pit road penalty. A debris caution on lap 89 slowed the field and brought nearly all of leaders to pit road — except for one. Gordon stayed on the track and assumed the race lead. However, Gordon chose the outside lane for the restart and lost the top spot to Denny Hamlin entering turn one. He dropped to 3rd when Jimmie Johnson passed on lap 109. By lap 130, he dropped to 4th place as skies began darkening for approaching rain showers. Gordon came to pit road for a green flag stop on lap 146. He returned to the race a lap down in 20th place due to staying out on the track during the earlier caution. As the race leaders began pitting a few laps later, Gordon moved up to 2nd place behind Hamlin.

Gordon battled handling issues in the mid-stages of the race and dropped to 4th on lap 168. Brad Keselowski went by on lap 186 to send Gordon back to 5th. A debris caution on lap 191 brought the lead lap cars to pit road and allowed Gordon to get back on the same pit sequence. Gordon restarted in 10th place after changing four tires. Gordon moved to 9th before a caution on lap 232. Gordon came to pit road for his final pit stop and restarted 7th. He dropped to 9th when Hamlin passed on lap 250. However, he made in-roads and moved back to 7th with 35 laps to go. With 19 laps to go, he took 6th from Kevin Harvick.

Turning point
Mid-race handling issues hindered Gordon’s ability to stay in the top-5. A four-tire change on the final pit stop lost track position.

JG’s comments

“It’s a great effort by the team, but definitely not what we were hoping for. This is a track I feel like we can win at. We just missed it. We just weren’t there. That first run, I thought, ‘wow, we really have something for them.’ But it’s so hard to pass and we kind of lost the handling on it. Yeah, it’s a 6th when you look at the rest of our season, that’s pretty good. But when you look at what we have to do over the next 7 races, it’s definitely not something we’re content with.”

NOT A BAD FINISH CONSIDERING YOU KIND OF TOOK A LONG WAY TO GET THERE?

“Yeah, I’m really disappointed in today. I don’t feel like that we had the car that we needed to be more competitive which I thought we could. When we got track position we weren’t able to maintain it. It was just a disappointing day when you look at what our goals are right now. We’ve got to be up there battling for wins if we are going to make this Chase and then get those wins. At the beginning I thought we were equally as good as anybody. I don’t know from that second run on it just went downhill.”

THE PIT STRATEGY YOU TALKED ABOUT YOU WERE IN A POSITION WHERE YOU CAN ROLL THE DICE IN SOME THINGS WAS THAT AN INDICATOR OF THAT TODAY?

“Yeah, I think Alan wanted to see what it was like in clean air. It was a risk. That is the position that we are in right now we’ve got to take those kinds of risks. It didn’t work out, but it wasn’t that bad. I think we feel back to third or fourth. We were still about where we were prior to that. I don’t know we just really didn’t keep up with the track. This tire, I tell you, Goodyear has got to go back to the drawing board. They came here with a new tire and it is not a very good tire. I think they know it. I’m hoping that they that they can come up with something a little bit better than this.”

Michigan In-Car Audio

Dale Earnhardt Jr snapped a four-year winless skid with a victory in the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan Speedway. Jeff Gordon posted a 6th place finish, which was the 400th top-10 finish of his NASCAR Cup series career. Gordon became the second youngest driver to achieve the milestone. It was Gordon’s fifth top-6 finish at Michigan in the last seven races there.

Gordon started 26th and slowed to avoid Kurt Busch’s spinning car on lap 2. He restarted in 30th place on lap 5. The second caution waved on lap 10 for Josh Wise’s engine with Gordon advancing to 25th. He ran 26th when the competition caution came on lap 25. Gordon came to pit road for tires and held the 26th spot. He moved up to 24th by lap 40 and ran 21st when the competition caution slowed the field on lap 50. Gordon opted for two tires and restarted 17th on lap 54. He moved up to the 14th position within 5 laps of the restart, and ran 13th on lap 70. Two laps later he took the 12th spot from Jimmie Johnson and entered the top-10 on lap 80. A debris caution on lap 81 brought pit stops with Gordon again opting for two tires. He restarted in 4th place on lap 84 and held the spot past the halfway point of the race.

Gordon stayed out to lead a lap during a green flag pit stop sequence on lap 119. He came to the pits for a four-tire change on lap 120. Kurt Busch’s spin on lap 121 brought out the caution with Gordon inheriting the top spot. He lost the lead in turn one to Dale Earnhardt Jr after the restart before the caution waved for Joey Logano’s spin on the backstretch, which collected Kasey Kahne. Another caution for Denny Hamlin’s spin on lap 133 slowed the field. The green flag waved on lap 140 with Gordon dropping to 3rd behind Earnhardt Jr and Tony Stewart. Greg Biffle passed Gordon on lap 159 as the DuPont Chevrolet battled loose handling issues. He came to pit road for a green flag pit stop on lap 165 and cycled through in 6th place. As the laps wound down, Gordon was unable to make headway due to a blistered tire. He finished 6th and moved to 20th in the series points standings.

Turning point
Gordon battled for the race lead from lap 120-140, but battling handling issues in the closing stages. Blisters on the right side tires hindered his efforts to claim a top-5 finish.

Gordon started 23rd and moved to 16th by lap 10. He took 13th from AJ Allmendinger on lap 13 as his forward march continued. He entered the top-10 on lap 24 with a pass on Kevin Harvick, and then took 8th from Denny Hamlin on lap 35. Green flag pit stops came on lap 47 with Gordon cycling through in 9th place. He moved up to 8th before the next round of green flag stops on lap 90. The first caution waved on lap 112 for debris. Pit stops followed with Gordon restarting in 11th place. However, he slid back to 15th within a lap before regrouping. On lap 130, Gordon ran in 12th place before a debris caution slowed the field. Gordon stayed on the track and inherited the lead. He dropped to 4th within a lap of the restart, but held the position before coming to pit road on lap 167. A caution on lap 170 resulted in Gordon being a lap down. However, he stayed on the the track for the free pass to get back on the lead lap.

Gordon restarted 24th and worked back to 15th by the halfway point. With 100 to go, Gordon ran in 6th place. He slipped to 9th with 50 to go, but took 8th from Carl Edwards with 23 to go. He made a late pass on Harvick to take 7th and score his best finish since Texas — a span of 5 races. Gordon moved from 24th to 22nd in the series standings.

Turning point
Gordon’s car seemed best during the dusk hours. As darkness enveloped the track, Gordon battled handling issues and was unable to make a serious charge toward the front.
